STUDENT SUCCESS TIP

“You have often heard the phrase ‘It’s not what you know but WHO you know,’ and for lots of things this is true. Learning what the instructor is teaching is important. But if you haven’t created the proper networks, no one will ever know what you know. Visit your instructor, introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you in class and join an organization. You will never know when meeting someone will work to your advantage.”

-Trey Hattawaydirector of marketing

and enrollment management

Fraud: Attention vital for security

card number, banking information or anything like that. Emails come out that have headings on it that look like the original bank and it will sometimes have a hyperlink that takes you to the actual bank website where you put in your information, but in the background of that email is an embedded tracking cookie or information where you’re automatically sending the hacker that information too,” Pessink said. “If you get something like that don’t respond to it; don’t call the phone number on the email. Look at the number on the back of your bank card and call it and see if it is a legitimate query or not.”

With the I.D. policy requiring students to wear their Ranger card on a lanyard or similar device, KCPD has placed the student validation sticker over the last eight digits for security reasons. Pessink says students need to leave the sticker on their Ranger card, but if students need the last eight numbers for banking, Pessink says peel the sticker back, get the number and recover it.

“It’s going to be difficult for somebody to actually read that (card number) while it’s on your neck, but we did that as a security measure any way,” Pessink said. “There is a myth that somebody can come by with a RF reader and scan your card; these cards don’t have RF chips in them so that’s not true.”

An RF reader is a device that transmits data using radio waves. RF readers can be used to steal object identity’s and information like that found on a credit card.

The KCPD office has collected a stack of 20 Ranger cards, three driver’s licenses and one Social Security card, and Pessink notes that about half of the Ranger cards came from the ATM where students forgot to take them out before leaving. Pessink reminds students that when using the ATM in the Student Center, they need to stand there and wait for their card to come out and take it with them. The problem with leaving one’s debit card in the ATM is that before the card is ejected the screen asks for another transaction; therefore, if the cardholder leaves, the next person who uses the ATM could make an unauthorized transaction.

According to Pessink, there have been about half a dozen debit card abuse cases during the 2010-2011 academic school year; however, these cases involved Ranger cards and other debit/credit cards.

“We had several cases last year, primarily in the fall, of debit card abuse,”

Pessink said. “There were five in the fall and maybe one in the spring, and these weren’t just the Ranger cards; these were standard banking cards as well.”

Last year’s cases involved students dropping their cards and someone else picking them up and using them, students stealing cards out of the dorms to use and students forgetting their cards in the ATM and another student coming up and making a transaction.

“In all of those cases we were fortunate in that we were able to identify the persons responsible and all of them were arrested,” Pessink said.

Students who notice unauthorized transactions on any of their bank cards including their Ranger card need to first call the bank, put a hold on the card and then fill out a police report.

If fraud charges are found on one’s Ranger card, students need to contact Herring Bank because the bank places, disperses and controls the money on the Ranger cards. According to Justin Rice, student accounts coordinator, his job in the Cashier’s Office is to process all of the refunds in KC’s system, send a file to Herring Bank stating which students have refunds and the amounts of the refunds. This is done every week, normally every Friday; however, the big refunds work differently.

“Basically Herring Bank is just the facilitator to provide refunds electronically,” Rice said. “It’s really cut and dry. Once the funds leave us it’s in the hands of Herring Bank.”

Because Herring Bank controls the funds on student Ranger cards, Rice says the Cashier’s Office refers students to Herring Bank when there are problems like debit card abuse. Employees in KC’s Cashiers Office can not access the transaction information.

There are several steps one can take to prevent debit card abuse.

“Routinely check your balance. Monitor your banking accounts, not just with a Ranger card but any banking cards you have to make sure nothing is going on because the sooner you catch it the easier it is to put a stop to it and find out who is responsible,” Pessink said.

Cardholders can also use online banking to track banking activity.

If fraudulent charges are found on a Ranger card, call Herring Bank at the number located on the back of the Ranger card or visit www.herringbank.com for contact information. For other bank cards, call the number on the back of the card and follow the additional instructions.

The KC Early Childhood Center will begin its annual Miracle Mile Walk between 9-10 a.m. today to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The children will be in various buildings around campus collecting money to send to one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers.

“We have been doing a fundraiser for St. Jude for 19 years,” said Laura Pauley, director of ECC. “However, we have only been doing the Miracle Mile fundraiser for the past 10; this will be our 11th.”

In the past 10 years, the ECC has raised about $12,400 for St. Jude.

“I love knowing that we are supporting the work of St. Jude,” Pauley said. “I also love to hear preschoolers explain their cause to potential contributors on campus.”

Each age group will be assigned certain buildings to go to during the walk.

Those who would like to donate but will not be available when the children collect

money on campus, may give money to the contact person listed above today or take their donation to the Early Childhood Center by 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14.

Checks should be made payable to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“St. Jude is an amazing place,” Pauley said. “We love to support their efforts and hope you will support us in helping them accomplish their goals for children.”

cancer fight. Through initiatives, events and programs, the Komen Foundation is helping people in areas where breast cancer treatment is readily not available.

In October 1983, one year after their beginning, the first Race for the Cure was held in Dallas, with 800 people participating. By 2002, the number of participants reached 1.3 million and continues to grow.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization was created a few years after the start of the Susan G.

Komen Foundation. The National Breast

Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization is a partnership of national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease and provide greater access to screening services.

Since its inception a

quarter century ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer.

Today, NBCAM recognizes that although many strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished and America’s 31 days of pink is just the beginning.

“It went quite well,” he said.

Hillier’s featured pieces include six sculptures and seven drawings.

All the pieces in the show

are for sale. Hillier has not put his work up for sale too many times before.

“It’s a slightly different endeavor for me,” Hillier said. “It’s always fun to show.”

The show is free and open to the public at P’s Gallery, 712 Glencrest, Suite B, located upstairs. The gallery is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

KC’s main campus has 25 parking lots with signs indicating where to park: “S” for student, “R” for resident and “E” for employee, including visitors and handicap parking spots.

Employee parking spots are labeled with yellow paint and a “staff ” label.

Pessink said some students have gotten parking tickets for parking in staff parking and have appealed tickets because the “staff ” sign wasn’t visible.

“If it’s yellow don’t park; it’s common sense,” Pessink said.

Finding a parking spot is a hit or miss for some students.

“I wish they would add more parking spots by the Applied Technology Building. It’s hard to find a spot in the morning,” said Minerva Haynes, Kilgore freshman.

Cody Gillis, Tatum freshman, said he prefers to ride his motorcycle because it’s easier to find a spot.

“Ain’t no way I’ll find a close spot after 9 a.m. when I drive my car, but I know I’ll always find this one spot when I ride my bike,” Gillis said.

There are students like Kris Dobbins, Kilgore freshman, who has not had an issue with parking.

“I park on the same spot every day by the gym,” Dobbins said.

KCPD makes rounds every day throughout the day to check for parking violations. Students who park in a staff designated parking spot will be fined $25 and $50 for parking in a handicap spot without a handicap sticker.

To this date 585 parking tickets have been issued. Students can appeal parking tickets by getting an appeal form from the Student Life Office in the Game Room located in the Devall Student Center. Tickets must be appealed within 10 days of getting the ticket. Student Government Association reviews all appeals.

Writer’s block, the archenemy of all writers. It is that

moment when you are sitting at the computer and the essay is due tomorrow. All that is on the writing program is empty white space with that blinking black line practically laughing in your face. Yeah, I know that feeling. I have come across it when trying to write a news story or when thinking about a topic for a column. Sometimes I get writer’s block when writing an essay; other times it is when I’m trying to add a little bit to a novel I’m writing.

Writer’s block pounces on

me, cruel and merciless, as I write this very column. Yes, writer’s block on writer’s block. There is something about this scenario that I find particularly humorous.

You see, writer’s block usually is born from anxiety. Quite a few situations cause anxiety when writing. For example, in English the teacher may assign a topic for the upcoming essay.

The topic you happen to get doesn’t strike any of that creative muse in the brain because you have absolutely no interest in the assigned topic. Solution? Try to find a particular aspect of the topic you are interested in, as long as the writing assignment allows it.

Also, one can ask the instructor how to make the topic more interesting before requesting a new topic.

Maybe it is the thought of writing the paper that makes you anxious. I get very anxious when I’m given a writing assignment, such as English essays. Find something that soothes you, whether it be

chewing gum, listening to music, stretching, closing your eyes for 10 seconds, whatever gets you to calm down. Sometimes listening to music helps me. I prefer music with a fast beat which gives me a variety of genres.

Then the most common problem I come across, I can’t figure out how to start off whatever I’m writing, whether it be a book, an essay, a speech, a column, a news story, whatever. I hear people tell me to start in the middle, but that doesn’t work for me because my mind seems to think that the middle is the beginning at the moment and the anxiety gets so much worse. What I do is I

just write something pertaining to the subject, no matter how badly worded, and continue on from there. If it’s a story, I enjoy describing the scene, maybe the character.

Oh how I loathe writer’s block. It makes my mind go blank and seems to suck the energy right out of me. But you know something good that came from it? It gave me an idea for this column.

Center surrounded by a pile of petticoats and strapped into a corset that was screaming for dear life. I was lucky to be able to utter a sigh of frustration.

My whole body was strapped down, tucked in, sucked up and pushed out in ways I didn’t think were possible. I was trying on my Victorian-style costume for the play “Charley’s Aunt” and nothing seemed to fit me. All of the clothes there were designed for the usual ladies of the Shakespearean stage. You know, the kind that seem to be fed nothing more than lentils and lemon water? Now I love theatre as much as the next Thespian, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to forfeit a cheeseburger for it!

As I attempted to look joyful staring into the mirror at what looked like a redheaded, gussied-up can of opened biscuits, I thought to myself “one size just doesn’t fit all.”

The truth of the matter is, “one size doesn’t fit all” does not just apply to clothing; it applies to life.

We are all physically and mentally different. Everyone has a different story as to how they came to be the person that everyone sees today. The awkward woman you see everyday that never has the latest fashions on may have lost her house and all of her belongings to a fire. The young man that occasionally begins to cry in public may have just lost his first newborn child. The old man that strangely stalks about stores with a limp and sunglasses may have been injured in Vietnam.

It seems that many people never take the time to figure out why someone is “different” but they will judge them in no time at all. I think it is time for our society to turn our backs on what has been decided as “normal” so people can finally feel free to be themselves. By spending all of our time trying to impress other people, we leave ourselves no time to enjoy our own lives.

While I don’t believe anyone reading this is going to be trying on a dress made for the 1890s anytime soon, I do have a piece of advice. The next time you find yourself trying to squeeze into a pair of “fashionable” jeans that are two sizes too small, just take a deep breath, exhale, let the button pop off into the ether and say “It’s all right, I’ll find a pair that is just my size.”

School spirit seems to be in constant shortage at KC. Only 3.1 percent of the student population voted for the Homecoming King and Queen and only 4.7 percent

voted for the Homecoming Court. If you’re an average student at KC that comes and goes to class with your blinders on, then you’re not doing your job supporting your alma mater.

If last week passed without notice to you and without the slightest Homecoming buzz in your gut, your inner Ranger missed out. In a way, we are all missing out on this campus-wide event that brings us unity, camaraderie and even a little fun to help us get through. Some of us may be commuters, others residents, internationals, faculty or staff but we are all Rangers, and we all share this college.

Inadequate notification for Homecoming seemed to be part of the problem with voter turnout this year. If you didn’t venture into the Devall Student Center or pick up a copy of The Flare last week you probably had no idea voting was going on.

Joseph Savoie, coordinator of residential life, said the votes were skewed last fall due to trouble with SurveyMonkey and

only allowing one vote per IP address. This caused KC to use Stone Age paper ballots this year, and voting took place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26-27, in only the student center. How can we have a proper rockin’ Homecoming if most of the population doesn’t even know what is going on?

In a recent survey conducted by the Flare, 58 percent of those polled said they would have voted if online voting were available. KC needs to find a more effective method for voting. This month Phi Theta Kappa is using SurveyMonkey to gather student votes for the Excellence in Teaching Awards, so why didn’t we use this voting method during Homecoming?

Next year students should communicate their suggestions for Homecoming activities, decorate the campus, invite a cool guest speaker, host a competition between clubs other than the royalty and court. We could start a spirit chain or have competitions for most spirited dress.

Students also need to take responsibility for the lack of spirit. Start caring, stop being so shy, stop thinking this place is terrible (because it’s not), talk to your fellow students, get involved and we can make this place glow with spirit.
