I spoke with Josh from Fegley’s Allen-town BrewWorks in Allentown, PA.The Allentown location opened in2007 (compared to 1998 for theBethlehem location). They brew aBlonde, IPA, Triple IPA, Wit, Lager, and many other seasonals or special-ties. All of their beer is available ineither 12oz bottles or 750mL bottles. The employees enjoy an exciting anddedicated work culture where theyarrive at work at 6:30AM and brew2-3 batches of beer each day. Isampled the Hop’solutely Triple IPAand Space Monkey Raspberry Saison. The IPA had a wonderfully sweet, hoppy flavor complimented by itsown bitterness as soon as it was swal-lowed. Space Monkey started outwith a sweet, raspberry flavor anddried out as it went down. Look fortheir wide variety of experimental andunique flavors at your local liquorstore in the South Jersey area!

The Society Page Takes a Look atthe Maserati 4.5 Costin Zagato

ECR Exclusive - Until 1956, Maserati focused on small engined racecars with engine sizes between 1.5 litre and 3 litres. However, morepowerful Ferraris, Jags and Astons were typically taking thecheckered flag. As such, Maserati decided to develop a car that wouldbeat the manufacturers.

Enter the Maserati 4.5 Costin-Zagato.

Produced from 1956 through 1958, the car featured not only a morepowerful engine but also a lightweight chassis. Two engines wereactually developed. One, a 3.5 litre 6 cylinder and a 4.5 litre 8cylinder. The 6 cylinder was used in the in the 1956 Mille Miglia withsome not so hot results. So, work continued on the 8 cylinderconfiguration and near the end of 56’ it was installed. The work paidoff as the engine was rated at 400 horse and was mated to a 5-speedgearbox. The motor also sported 4 Weber carbs for plenty ofbreathing capacity. With all this power the braking systems were alsoimproved to handle this beast.

These improvements continued to pay off. In 1957 at the Argentinian1000km race, the 450S led many laps but was sidelined by clutchproblems. Subsequently, at Sebring, the 450S snagged a victory whilebeing driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jean Behra. Victory was notwithout pain however as mechanical issues arose at the Mille Migliaand Nurburgring.

With these events under their belts, the Maserati team aimed for the24 Hours of LeMans. Maserati designed a special aerodynamic bodyfor this event. Unfortunately, with Stirling Moss at the wheel, thisconfiguration performed poorly and turned slower times compared toa 450S with a roadster body. Before retiring from this event due torear axle issues, Moss powered the car to a second place spot. All wasnot lost as a victory was achieved at the Swedish Grand Prix only tobe tarnished by another team 450S retiring due to transmissionproblems.

With wins and failures creating what was surely a rollercoaster ofemotion at Maserati, the team focused on the final race of the seasonthe Venuzuelan Grand Prix. Maserati entered 3 cars in this event, two450S’ and one 300S. Surely hopes ran high but to no avail. StirlingMoss’ 450S was destroyed after a collision. The second caught firewhile taking on fuel. However, the car was not incapacitated and wasput back on the track. As fate would have it, while performing a pass, the teams two remaining cars collided and were destroyed. No luck,no wins and certainly dashed dreams.

With such a checkered existence, who would want to remember anyof this? Well, I for one (as many others I’m sure) seek to remember, memorialize and continue to focus on an important part of Maseratiracing heritage. Did we forget the incredible design of one of themost powerful engines of its time? Or perhaps you neglected (howdare you) to notice how incredibly beautiful this car really is? I can’thelp but think they were on the leading edge coming into their ownon developing a respected racing presence. Finally realizing whatthey were capable of achieving. Rules changes in 1958 rendered the450S ineligible to race. Most of the remaining 450S were shipped tothe U.S. and were raced with some success. Had the 450S continued, who knows what would have transpired. More mechanical issues ormore victories?

Certainly one thing cant be debated: The cars awesome trackpresence, power and stunningly good looks.
