Parish Council Report

Too darkto see the potholes?

Call LCC Highways direct on 01522 782070 to report

faulty street lights, heaving paths and potholes.

Village trafficThe chairman of the Road Traffic

Group (Mr. C Townson) informed the council that the Road Traffic Group was in favour of the Traffic Calming Plan for Colsterworth High Street submitted by LCC Highways on the 1st September 2009. This will be discussed by the parish council at the council meeting in November. A copy of the plan is available to view on the parish website, www.colsterworth.com.Allotments

The autumn inspections were carried out on Sunday 13th Sep-tember and the team was im-pressed with the overall high standard of care and attention. It was clear that many hours of hard work had been invested by the majority of tenants. However three allotments were deemed to be in poor condition needing immediate attention and the tenants have been notified. One allotment tenancy agreement has been terminated.High Dyke overnighting

LCC Highways is undertaking a number of schemes to stop HGVs ad hoc parking. They have also confirmed that Easton Cold Store is being included in the discus-sions because many of the vehicles are delivering or collecting from their premises.Environment

SKDC has been requested to clear litter from roadside verges outside of village limits because Colsterworth’s Community Clean-er can only remove litter from roads within the 30mph limit restriction.

SKDC has confirmed that work to tidy trees and shrubs on public footpath 9 (Bourne Road Estate) has been included in their winter schedule.Amenities

With Christmas fast approaching the Parish Council is to buy addi-tional tree lights to enhance this year’s display in the churchyard of St John the Baptist Parish Church

In December 2008, the parish council decided that professional advice was required to ascertain the condition of the War Memo-

rial. It has been found to be stable but requires qualified restoration to the structure and surrounds. The figure of Christ has become eroded over time but the experts recommend it be preserved rather than replaced. The council agreed to support this recommendation and a grant application will be made to the War Memorial Trust to ascertain the level of funding they will provide. The estimated cost of renovation of the War Me-morial and surround is £12,000. The council would very much like to hear from villagers who might consider being benefactors. They should contact the Parish Clerk. Youth Club

The Chairman of the Youth Club reported that Halloween and Christmas discos had been booked. The car wash held in the White Lion car park had raised £77 towards club funds. Adult helpers on youth evenings are still in short supply and anyone wishing to be involved would be welcomed.Planning mattersReceived: Mrs PD Sharman, ex-tension to domestic garage at 28 Colster Way; Mr Glyn Mitch-ell, erection of dwelling at Hill View, South Witham Road, North Witham; Mr S Dexter, works to ash tree at 2 Woodlands Drive.Approved by SKDC: Mr A White, erection of four industrial units adjacent to Truckstop, Colster-worth; Mr J Wardle, single storey extension at Church Gates, North Witham; Mr J Spencer, erection of two storey rear extension at 11 Northerns Close, North Witham; Mr & Mrs V Arden for a rear con-servatory at 11 Pasture Close, Colsterworth.

September crime

There was a minor assault and damage caused to vehicles fol-

lowing a disturbance on Stephenson Close, Colsterworth.

On Woodlands Drive, a freezer was stolen from a garden and a parcel was taken from a doorstep on Bourne Road Estate.

At the Larkfield Homes site on Woolsthorpe Road , a Stihl saw and a whacker plate were stolen while the show home complex on the David Wilson Homes site lost a plastic table and chairs.

Dressed up to learn

We have just started a uniform thrift shop at Colsterworth

CofE Primary School and desper-ately need to increase our stocks.

The Thrift Shop is run by the PTFA and all proceeds go directly into PTFA funds. So we’re looking for Colsterworth Primary School uni-forms and are particularly keen to get our hands on items that bear the school’s logo– but please make sure that anything you give us is clean and in good enough condition. Even un-badged items such as trousers, skirts and football boots are welcome.Although we’ve already sent a letter out through the school to parents of current pupils, we’re sure that there will be useful things belonging to former pupils at the back of ward-robes throughout the villages.

You can drop bags off at the school office. Many, many thanks in ad-vance,

Tamzin KeenlysidePTFA Minutes Secretary

A note to say thank you to eve-ryone who helped make the

bridge lunch held recently in the Village Hall so successful, especially Helen, Philippa and Jennifer. The proceeds will be split between the Village Hall Fund and the British Heart Foundation. Thank you too to those who donated raffle prizes and those who made such delicious puddings.

Road safety plans

Much has appeared in In Touch about the various ideas for

better traffic management in Col-sterworth on the High Street and on Bridge End.

Full plans have now been drawn up by Lincolnshire County Coun-cil. They are to be found on the insert enclosed with this copy of In Touch.

None has been costed or ad-opted as yet and you can see them, together with the contents of the insert, on Colsterworth’s website (www.colsterworth.com). Just click on Latest News.

Everyone in the village has the op-portunity to comment by contact-ing John Hannam, the Parish Clerk, on 861888 or at 10 Stamford Road.

Memories flood back

Colsterworth’s website (www.colster wor th.com) and In

Touch reaches far into the southern hemisphere and a resident who emigrated 20 years ago is keen to get in touch with his roots.

David Shorthouse was born and brought up in Woolsthorpe and he can trace his family in the area back to the 1880s. ”My granddad was born on the Witham side of Water Lane in 1904 and worked on the Ironstone Quarry for years. It was he that uncovered the Roman Oven that used to sit in the museum at Grantham.”

David was one of Margaret Wright’s first pupils at Colsterworth School when she started there in 1967 and remembers most of the events she describes on the website. The walk across to the village hall for dinner was something he says the pupils looked forward to all morn-ing. “Albert Atter, his wife ‘aunty’ Nancy and their children Karen and Kevin were among my best friends and Pearl Jackson, and Rita Burden,

were well known to me too.“But the people I’m trying to find

are those that went through school with me: Robert Sowerby, James Foottit, Winston Zaciewicz, and Neil Green. And my cousin, Peter Short-house, is still somewhere around Colsterworth.

“I arrived in South Africa in 1989 and have worked all over the coun-try at coal, diamond and platinum mines.” he says. He’s now married to a South African and lives in the north west of the country.

David hopes he’s going to hear from some of his contemporaries so, if you’re one of them, why not send him an e-mail to [email protected] right away.

If that’s a problem, just ask your editor to forward a short message.

A five-day week for Pre School

New toilet and washroom facili-ties for the children and a new

storeroom have been installed at the Colsterworth Pre School at the Methodist Church Hall with the help of a grant from Surestart and Lincolnshire County Council.

In addition, thanks to the Open Door Team’s kindness in moving in to the Church, the Pre School now opens every single weekday during term time.

We’re there from 9am to 3pm to meet the needs of our working parents and there area few spaces available at most sessions. We’d love to see you if you would like to drop in for an informal visit anytime

Congratulations go to our Leader Sharon McGown in the successful completion of her Foundation De-gree. She’s now embarked on the final year of her BA(Hons) Degree in applied Studies in Early Childhood plus the Early Years Professional Status Award. All Pre Schools and Nurseries will have to have a quali-

fied Early Years Professional by 2015 and here at our Pre School we’ll have one by 2011. We wish Sharon well in her studies and also Adele our Deputy who is doing her NVQ3 in Childcare.

Just to let you know, our pleas for help definitely work from time to time - a warm welcome and a big thank you go to Marion Hayes for volunteering to take on the role of Treasurer.

It seemed quite fitting that our speaker for the 12th October evening

was Malcolm Grey from the Campaign for National Parks, for this season marks the 60th anniversary of the National Parks legislation. The story of the 1932 Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout has now entered the realms of rambling folklore. But the un-necessary imprisonment of five young ramblers for merely exercising their right to roam not only united the ramblers’ cause, it also became the key motivation for the fight for legislation which eventually led to our National Parks.

There are thirteen very diverse National Parks in England and Wales, ranging from the bleak Brecon Bea-cons to the Norfolk Broads and of course the Peak District. There are three in Scotland and a proposed new park in Northern Ireland: “Not ours but ours to look after” for generations to come.

The slide of the stream near the Cat & Fiddle Pub at Buxton bought back childhood memories for our

Chair Margaret Cooper who used to cycle there.

We had five visitors, two of whom came from Belgium and they all went away very happy after their successful go on Gillian’s Bag-a-Bottle stall (which raised £30 for funds) and also on the raffle. Apparently they don’t do things like this in Belgium and it reminded them of the Calendar Girls. Well, you never know what could happen if we get short of funds!

Ros won the Flower of the Month competition with a Marigold. Mem-bers were reminded that we need money and menu decisions for the Christmas Lunch by the next meet-ing and Jo wants your baby photo for the competition in December. David now has the Sutton Seed catalogues and orders must be in by December at the latest.

Our next meeting is on 9th Novem-ber when Andrew Ward from Norwell Nurseries near Newark will tell us about Marvellous Mints and Perfect Poppies - so see you in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.

New book celebrates Colsterworth

Jane Ostler’s Forty Trees of Lin-colnshire has just been published to mark the Lincolnshire Tree Awareness Group’s fortieth anniversary.

The trees shown reflect all aspects of trees from Veterans to New Plantings, from Legends to Rarities. There are splendid photographs accompanying the fascinating descriptions and sto-ries together with carefully executed line drawings (more examples of Jane’s drawings are on page 5 of In Touch as usual).

Newton’s Apple and one of the trees from the Stamford Road Tree For Life planting flag up our local arboreal splendour in a book aimed at specialists but written to interest us ordinary folk too. You can buy it from Colsterworth Post Office and from Jane direct.

Down the pub ...

Our second Open Mic Night proved a great success with more ‘artistes’

turning up and demonstrating they really do have talent. We’d like to thank Darren Cherry whose idea it was and has been the driving force. The next one is planned for Friday 13th November.

And why not buy a horse now for our Charity Race Night on Friday 27th November. If owning horseflesh isn’t your thing think about sponsoring a race!

gills have a greenish tinge which helps to distinguish it from other species. It is found throughout the year and is abundant enough to use in dyeing where it pro-duces a soft, delicate yellow. It is inedible, being extremely acrid and its general use is in the later stages of wood decay in the cycle of returning nutrients to the earth. Recently it has been found to inhibit the growth of that most deadly of foes to foresters, the honey fungus.

The word toadstool derives from a German word ‘tod’ mean-ing death. The mistranslation may be appropriate since toads have long been associated with evil spells. One was seen hiding in an old posthole this month - no doubt waiting for Halloween.

The Indian Summer has meant flowers have remained in gar-dens and waysides along with attendant insects. This in turn has meant an abundance of food for birds and mammals. Popula-tions of seven-spot ladybirds, s m a l l to r -t o i s e s h e l l butterflies, honey bees, goldfinches and hedge-h o g s a l l seem to be recovering. To look for in November

Enough rain may mean a late appearance of fungi. Con-tinuing mild weather will see butterflies out on sunny days. Young hedgehogs born late in the season may still be trying to put on enough body weight to survive hibernation.

Please send all records to me at 61 Woolsthorpe Road Tel:860465 or by e mail to [email protected]

For the rest of the year, the names of our months mean

only eighth, ninth and tenth because that’s what they were in the old Roman calendar. We must look to the Anglo Saxon names to see what meaning they had for people. October was called winterfylleth from the old English fyllan to fell. It was a time for tree-felling and no doubt winter fuel would be a first consideration.

The otherwise overlooked hornbeam trees along Old Post Lane have been remarked on of late due to their long ropes of its fruits. The leaves resemble beech, but in the spring their cat-kins hang as yellow tassels and, otherwise, they are lost amongst the more decorative rowans and maples planted round the quar-ries. They w e r e a v a l u e d t i m b e r tree. Their wo o d i s h a r d e r , stronger and, apart from box, h e a v i e r than any other European tree. They were used for anything which had to withstand hard wear, from cog wheels to chop-ping blocks.

Partly due to the dry weath-er, almost no ‘mushrooms and toadstools’ were found on the September fungi recording in Twyford Forest. Sulphur Tuft was frequent but it grows from wood and is less dependent on the weather. Its name comes from the colour of its caps and the

Our guest speaker at the October meeting, Mary

Wright, certainly surprised us with details of homoeo-pathic medicine. From Rhus tox for arthritis, Australian Bush flower for dyslexia, and even something for anger (but it wasn’t a sedative she said). With ingredients of 33% water and 67% brandy, and 374% proof at that, who cares what you are suffering from with medicine like that? I’m not sure that we were all convinced of the claims, but there are converts in all walks of life, including some top royals. Bett Pope thanked her for her interesting and informative talk.

With our President, Mary Cowley indisposed, Vice -President Rosemary Bolon-garo chaired the meeting and reported on the Kesteven Group meeting which she had attended. Deborah Hol-lamby, their guest speaker, spoke of her life from nun to broadcaster. What an inter-esting life it had been - busk-ing in full habit with a fellow novice, thimbles of vodka at end of the day - not a bit like we imagine convent life to be. She is to be heard on the radio at 6.15am with Pause for Thought, and is a regular with Aled Jones on his radio programme. We had acted as door stewards at the event and managed to sell quite a few of our quiz sheets.

County Federation sent us details of the Spring Council Meeting to be held at Spald-ing next March and Pippa

Greenwood will be the main guest speaker; a good one for all the gardeners. We also heard that there is to be a change to the voting for the proposed resolutions at the National AGM.

Newsletter orders are need-ed for next year, names to the secretary please.

Have you ordered your lunch from the menu yet for the 92nd anniversary? The treasurer would appreciate receiving payment prior to the event please. In return you will receive note of what you have ordered in case it’s slipped your mind.

Rosemary won the competi-tion for a bunch of herbs, well it was more like a bouquet and lovely it was. Barbara Moore was the runner-up.

Bett Pope manned the sales table, Barbara Moore served the tea with help, bless her, from our visitor, Gillian Cun-nington.

No business meeting next month, we will all be at the White Lion for our anniversary lunch (12noon for 12.30), but we resume business in the Village Hall on 10th December at 2pm - the second Thurs-day not the usual third. Sue Stephenson will tell us all about the Swinging Sixties and we might find out if she got up to all the things which we did. But they do say that if you can remember the six-ties you weren’t there. The competition is a sleeved long playing record. Oh yes, and there could be festive goodies to eat too. Visitors are most welcome.
