What I can learn from play?

Who ever knew that as children we played games that prepared us for life? Potentially you are thinking “what do you mean games prepared me for life?”

Consider what would happen if you had 8 children at a park and you gave them a few toys to play with. Maybe you included a ball, a hoop, a jump rope, whatever. The children will create a game from scratch, decide on rules and begin to play on their own IF WE LET THEM. The key here is to let them play and use their social skills.

When you step back at look at the group, you will see a leader emerge. You will see followers, and you might even see the characters in the famous “12 Angry Men”. These are life skills that you are now witnessing. Those who learn to get along will carry this over to the workplace and as parents. Those who lead can be encouraged to do this in industry as well. When the creativeness abounds, try to capture it and encourage it before it disappears into adulthood. Maybe the children recognize a flaw in the game and adapt to it or learn when to scrap it and try a new one.

First Grade News!!!!

The month of November flew by and the winter holidays are upon us. The second quarter ends on January 12, 2017.

First graders should be reading books at home a minimum of thirty minutes a night. You should also them questions about the text to check for comprehension.

In writing, we are working on opinion writing and adding details, an interesting beginning and a conclusion to our opinion pieces.

In math, we will continue learning subtraction and addition facts and all about fact families.

Our social studies focus is on families and our history with a multicultural holiday theme.

In science, we continue to learn about the earth and our place in space. The first grade team wishes all of our Floranada families a safe and relaxing winter break.

2nd Grade News!!!

Tis the season to be…grateful, kind, hardworking, and 2nd Grade Superstars! As 2016 comes to a close, it is amazing to see how much your children have learned, as well as, progressed both academically and socially. In addition to the academic curriculum, your children have focused on the importance of teamwork and positive character traits (i.e. responsibility, kindness, etc.)

Barnes and Noble Night was a big hit! Thank you to Mrs. Nocera and Ms. Shon (and their 5th grade buddies (Mrs. Brunt) for participating in this awesome annual event.

Academically speaking, the students have been learning how to write Opinion-based texts. Again, even though they answer the prompts based on how they feel or think, they are still responsible for providing evidence and personal examples from text to back up their opinions.

Mathematically, they are now learning 2 and 3-digit addition and subtraction. As previously stated, your children should be fluent with their single addition and subtraction facts Reflex Math.com is an excellent resource to help them meet mastery.

Monster Tales On October 31st, our third graders traveled to Parker Playhouse to watch a literary series of plays called Monster Tales. The kids were on the ends of their seats watching poems and plays about haunted trees, ghosts and pencils that talk.

STEM in Third GradeMore and more our Third Grade classrooms are completing STEM

activities and lessons. What does that mean exactly? According to Elaine J. Hom of LiveScience.com, “STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world.” Basically, our third graders are learning life, problem solving skills.

PE NEWS

In Physical Education students are performing the PACER fitness test all this week with great commitment, helping and encouraging their friends and

obtaining amazing results.

The PACER fitness test, also referred to as the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run test, a fitness test, is designed to test your ability to stay on pace and stay in shape. The PACER fitness test is used by young children in grades K-5, and by sports teams looking to gain an advantage and learn to pace themselves on the court or field. It is seen as being a particularly effective test for younger children, because it is a fun activity for them. It also helps their them build up self-esteem, because those that finish last or children are in the shape least actually finish the PACER fitness test first. It helps the kids stay in shape, too, but does not force them to run or sprint laps around the gym or field to do so.

The Holiday Season is finally upon us! Our Floranada Elementary Winter Concert will take place on Monday, December 12th from

6:30-7:30 in the Dining Hall. All of our amazing after school music clubs including: After-School Chorus, Bucket Band, Recorder Club and Ukulele Club have

been working very hard over the last few months in weekly hour-long rehearsals to put on quite a spectacular show, so come and support our little musicians on December 12th!

Parents of students in these music clubs, make sure your child is practicing as much as possible over the next couple weeks prior to our show on December 12th. We only get a chance to rehearse once a week, so extra practice at home is absolutely vital to the success of our show. Your child should be bringing their music folder home with them everyday, allowing them the opportunity to practice as such.

I know the students and I are looking forward to this wonderful event. See you all there!

SMART INVESTMENTS LEAD TO SMART STUDENTS.NOVEMBER 2016 UPDATE

Two years following voter approval of the $800 million General Obligation Bond, and less than 1.5 years since the first series of bonds were issued in June 2015 (providing the initial funding for the SMART program), 701 school facilities projects are in various phases of the SMART process. This includes 18 new SMART projects initiated since the October 2016 SMART update, and an overall investment of $498 million as of October 31, 2016. The SMART program remains on track to be completed within five to seven years, as originally promised.

SMART Facilities Update

School Choice Enhancement Program Projects:School Choice Enhancement projects are making progress across the District. As a reminder, each school will be allocated $100,000 for capital-related projects to improve the condition of instructional and educational spaces. A total of 110 School Choice Enhancement Program projects are underway. Some examples of School Choice Enhancement Program projects underway or complete include:

You can also direct games if you want to reduce the stress of learning!

Learning is supposed to be fun. Learning, especially at the lower grades should be done using games. Our kindergarten teachers want to teach you how to do this. they have a training for parents who would like to learn some VERY EASY games that you can play with your children to teach them basic reading and math skills. Ask a primary teacher and they will be able to tell you 5-10 games you can play with a pack of cards without even taking a breath!

Magnetic letters and foam letters from the dollar store or a craft store are just another GREAT tool for learning to read. When

children get the chance to make words on the back of the cookie sheet or the refrigerator, it becomes FUN!

Playing games with words on index cards can be just as fun. We invite our families that would like to learn some of these easy games to play to our family night.

District Prequalification Workshop On October 31, 2016, the District hosted a pre-qualification workshop to assist contractors with developing a EHWWHU�XQGHUVWDQGLQJ�RI�WKH�ELGGLQJ�RSSRUWXQLWLHV�DYDLODEOH�WR�WKHP��,Q�DGGLWLRQ��WKH�ZRUNVKRS�RIIHUHG�attendees valuable input and insight to expedite their prequalification applications. The goal for the workshop was two-fold: (1) assist contractors in navigating the District’s bidding process, and (2) increase the pool of prequalified vendors/contractors. Having greater availability of qualified firms to bid on upcoming contracts enables the Office of Facilities & Construction (OF&C) to quickly mobilize on projects. This is especially beneficial for upcoming single-scope projects, which are ideally suited for local, small, Minority and Women-Owned (MWBE) businesses. The workshop was well attended by contractors, who were eager to take advantage of the opportunity for onsite/hands-on assistance with the prequalification process. The District remains committed to fostering better relationships with the business community and leveraging the SMART program to grow local businesses. The SMART Technology initiative continues to make incredible progress and is on schedule. As of the end of October 2016, 133 schools are now complete. This includes infrastructure/network equipment, wireless access points and more than 55,400 computer devices installed, for an investment of more than $51.8 million as of October 31, 2016.

Sharing Their SMART Story – C. Robert Markham Elementary SchoolSubmitted by Principal Craig A. Saddler, Ph.D.

C. Robert Markham Elementary School is a BCPS magnet school located in Pompano Beach. Our school’s PDJQHW�SURJUDP�IRFXVHV�RQ�WHFKQRORJ\�DQG�JOREDO�FRPPXQLFDWLRQV���,Q�DQ�HIIRUW�WR�UHYLWDOL]H�WKLV�PDJQHW�program, during the 2015/2016 school year, our school leveraged SMART bond funding and magnet funding allocated to our school to significantly upgrade the network infrastructure and school’s television production studio. This money was spent to create a state-of-the-art production studio to provide Markham Elementary students with world-class 21st century learning opportunities. Each day Markham Elementary students learn and develop skills in television production, journalism, research, reading, writing and presentation skills. The students’ broadcast studio has been modernized to a green room, which allows for digital manipulation of the background and full digital integration of broadcast content during broadcasts (see before and after pictures). This provides Markham Elementary students with a real world experience on how an actual television production studio works. Students take charge of every aspect of their live broadcasts. These experiences include running the technical operations of the equipment, operating multiple teleprompters, reporting as news and weather anchors from the studio, and video production. The daily opportunity to hone their talents and learn new techniques allows students to develop 21st century skill sets that enhance their academic growth. Markham Elementary students boast with pride about their experiences now – compared to previous years.
