provide them with evidence based, practical strategies to build resilience. On January the 31st the staff will participate in the program as part of one of our curriculum days. On February the 9th the Resilience Project will be presented to all students, then a parent session will be held on February 9th at 6.30pm. The Resilience Project continues on from our work this year with Resilient Youth Australia and Bayside Youth Services and our Bully Stoppers Program. GEM SQUAD Billboard You may have noticed the wonderful new billboard at the front of our school this week. The Bully Stoppers project this year was to design a billboard to promote resilience in young people. The Bully Stoppers team used three core elements promoted by the Resilience Project , gratitude, empathy and mindfulness to create the ‘GEM SQUAD’. This work will continue into 2017 in conjunction with the Resilience Project in term 1. A huge thank you to Ami Russell who coordinated the printing and use of the billboard. 2017 Term Dates All 2017 term dates are available on our website under the ‘Parents’ menu and ‘Term Dates’ www.beaups.vic.edu.au/page/88/Term-Dates.

‘Thank you’ from the ART ROOM An enormous ‘thank you’ for all the donations that have been dropped into the art room this year. Our program couldn’t run without the materials that you give us. The Art Room would greatly appreciate NEWSPAPER donations as our supply has dwindled. If you could save your holiday papers, we would be very grateful. Have a wonderful, restful holiday break.

Remember the items must be new. Tomorrow, 9 December, is the final day for donations to be received. You can donate as much or as little as you like, but every item counts! You will be helping people in our local area who aren't as lucky as you. The donation box is located in the office area. Thank you for donating! Izzy Newell and Paige Gallagher.

LEVEL LOW DOWN Foundation Last Thursday the Prep students had a very special visitor arrive in Prep – the Elf on the Shelf. The Prep students decided that a great name for the elf would be Zippy, as he zips here, there and everywhere. Zippy was first spotted in Prep P sitting on top of the Interactive Whiteboard projector. He then zipped into Prep T and was spotted hanging upside-down above the sewing table. On Monday he was found in Prep M’s Christmas

tree! It has been a very exciting start to December for the Prep students and they are thoroughly enjoying keeping an eye out for Zippy. On Tuesday the students took part in a cooking incursion, with lots of help from our parent helpers and Year 6 helpers – Ollie, Frieda and Kim. The students used a range of spices, dried dates and rolled oats to create a healthy Christmas treat – gingerbread bliss balls. Back in the classroom the students used their senses to discuss how the bliss balls looked, felt, tasted and smelled.

Year One The last few weeks of term are such fun! We’re still doing some great learning but we are balancing that with a few popular and celebratory activities too. This Thursday, we have Gecko Sports and Bike n’ Blend. The Gecko Sports program ‘helps children improve speed, strength, balance, endurance, coordination and flexibility while most importantly increasing confidence and having FUN’! During the Bike n’ Blend activity, our little guys will make their own healthy, pedal powered smoothies using the ‘award winning blender bikes’ provided. Lastly, thank you to the parents who have come in for interviews. We have valued the opportunity to share your child’s (or children’s) progress!

Year Two Thank You Imogen for taking the Year 2s for Yoga classes. We really enjoy learning about and practising the various traditional Yoga poses. Our favourites have been: downward dog, mouse, eagle, tree, warrior 1, 2 and 3, chair, plank and pretzel. Tomorrow we are celebrating and reflecting on the lessons we have learnt during our Health Rotations. We are going to be making smoothies using the energy that we create from riding bikes! Please ask us about our experience and the fun time we had when we get home.

We have been practising our Year 2 Christmas Carol for Carols night which is on Monday 19 December. But, sadly, we can’t tell you what it is. You will have to come along and watch our performance!

Year Three This year it has been a real pleasure for us to be reading mentors to our prep buddies so as a way of saying thank you we have been creating a picture story book for our prep buddies this week. We have been trying hard to place a great amount of detail into the pictures as we know young readers really engage with images when reading. It has been great fun revisiting some of our favourite picture story books and creating our own. Some of our titles include ‘I Love My Pony’, ‘Hide and Seek’ and ‘The Rainbow Fairies’. We hope you enjoy our books preps, Merry Christmas! In other news we were treated to an outstanding performance of Matilda by some of our talented Year 3 students. The girls planned and rehearsed the show completely independently, it was truly amazing. A particular crowd favourite was ‘Naughty’, so much so that they ended their performance with a reprise of the song and we all enthusiastically sung along! The girls have gone onto present the play to the Year One students this week. Thanks for the amazing show Violet, Leila, Emily, Ruby, Ella, Eloise, Katia, Isla and Catriona. “It was amazingly well performed and they put lots and lots of hard work into it. It was like the real thing!” Lily “I think they practised really hard and it was like being in the cinema” Mackenzie “It was really good and it was like a shorter version of the real thing. I could see they put a lot effort into it” Ruby H

Year Four This week the Year 4 students have been participating in our Bike Ed program. We have been learning about bike safety, such as dismounting from a bike, the power position of a pedal, scanning the scene, walking a bike up steps and simple bike handling including turning corners. We have practised these skills in the school yard. The children have loved being out in the yard and demonstrating their great bike skills. Many thanks to Mrs Dale, Mrs Gardiner, Mrs McManus and parents for their help and support with this program. Our Village Market Expo is on Friday the 9th of December from 2pm – 2:45pm in the Year 4 learning space and Kitchen Garden Area. We look forward to seeing you. Don’t forget to bring along your change to purchase some of their beautiful creations. It would also be great for the students to have a small float so they can give change to their customers if necessary. Next Thursday 15 December we will be having our Life Saving and Fish and Chip Celebration Lunch at Beaumaris Life Saving Club. We are a SunSmart school and it is compulsory for children to wear a school (or other SunSmart) hat, bathers/ board shorts and sun screen together with a rash vest on the day. Please ensure your child has all of these items. Parents you are very welcome to join us on the day for lunch. We would also love one parent to walk down with us at 9.15am and one to walk back at 2.30pm. Please let us know if you can help.

Year Five

Best ever Bike Hike! On Tuesday the sun was shining and the Year 5 students headed off on their bikes. The first stop was at Mordiallic Park where we had our snack and burnt off some excited energy running around. We then set off through the wetlands avoiding the swarm of flies along the way. Bicentennial Park was our lunch stop where the students

explored the playground and thoroughly enjoyed trialing every slide in the park. We would like to thank the parents for their support on the day. It ran very smoothly and everyone had a fantastic day! Our first day of life saving was filled with water play, laughter and sun! The students rotated through relays, CPR, wading, boards and survival strategies. Fingers crossed the weather holds out for Friday! All Year 5 students are to be congratulated for their effort and support of their peers during the leadership process.

Year Six

This week, the government schools had transition day on Tuesday. They did all sorts of activities to make transitioning to high school easy and clear to everyone. On Monday, the year sixes had their ERP expo. Everyone did really well preparing for Monday. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we have lifesaving in Aspendale which the BAM (Bayside Aquatics Mentone) instructors will run for us. The students will learn CPR, beach safety, rips safety, running on sand and in the water, flags and to swim in waves. Our graduation is on Monday and all the Year 6 students are excited for the big night. Year 6 will have their class parties on Tuesday and the Year 6 bike ride will be Thursday 15 December. Have a good week! The Media Team
