ACMA Internet Safety Presentation— message from a parent who attended the session. “I thought that Lesley from ACMA was an engaging presenter providing us with an overview on a number of areas regarding cyber safety at home. From a basic computer users point of view who allows her children to play games on the iphone and ipad as well as the desktop, Lesley provided plenty of references to find further information about various areas of cyber safety and also used actual examples of what can happen if the users are not knowledgeable of the application that they are using. It was also interesting to hear what the students and teachers feedback was from presentations that she had done with each of those groups earlier in the day. I came home and turned my In-App purchases off!!”

CHESS CLUB: CHESS KIDS Congratulations on Beaumaris Primary's qualification to the STATE FINALS. Note that this year the event is being held at Our Lady of the Assumption School. Term 4 Chess Club is starting from tomorrow, Places are still available if your would like to join. Forms are available at the office or download one from our website.

CANTEEN NEWS The canteen will be open from Monday 14th October for lunch orders and counter sales. We are looking forward to seeing the smiling faces of the children and selling lots of 'Juicies' as the weather gets warmer. You will find the Term 4 Menu attached to this newsletter, and on the website under Forms/Links. Cinnamon doughnuts and warm milo will not be available this term, however we have all of our other favourites including pies, sausage rolls, tasty sandwiches and rolls from Swiss Bell, cake of the day, banana bread, gingerbread babies and popcorn. This term we are introducing orange flavoured Just Juice, frozen watermelon slices and apple slinkys! We have had occasions recently where some children have been bringing large amounts of money to the canteen (we believe) without the knowledge of their parents. While the canteen volunteers are great at spotting this, could families please be mindful of the amount of money children have access to that they might be bringing to the canteen. They should really be just bringing enough to purchase themselves a small treat. Where possible we ensure excess money is passed onto the class teacher for safekeeping.

FROM THE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND WELL BEING TEAM This week from Michael Grose….. This week Lesley from Cybersmart spoke to our students, staff and parents about cyber safety and games such as Minecraft. In today’s article, writer Jason Fox explains the attraction and outlines the benefits for kids but also reinforces Lesley’s message that time limits and knowing who children are interacting with is extremely important. HATS Now that the weather has finally warmed up it great to see our students all wearing their hats outside at recess, lunch and in sport lessons. Our Sunsmart guidelines recommend that children apply sunscreen before coming to school on high UV days. Sunscreen is also available in classrooms to top up throughout the day.

These are very busy times in our school grounds and we want to keep all our community safe. SUSTAINABILITY STAFF AT THE FETE 4M are still collecting empty, reusable spray bottles (e.g. windex, spray ‘n’ wipe, etc) so if you have any we would love you to bring them along to our classroom any time in the next week. We are also collecting lemons so if you have a lemon tree or know anyone who does, we will be using them and selling them as part of our natural cleaning product range. We would be very grateful if you could support us by donating these items. Thank you. PRINCIPAL FOR THE DAY Would you like to win the chance to be Principal of BPS for a day? This oppourtunity is being raffled amongst the students. Attend meetings, make announcements, check uniforms and advise teachers—all in a day’s work for the lucky winner. SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA NATIONAL FOOTBALL (SOCCER) CHAMPIONSHIPS

BRISBANE, SEPTEMBER 2013 Earlier this year, I was one of twelve lucky boys to get through numerous trials, to eventually be selected for the u12 State School Victoria soccer team. We competed in the National Football (Soccer) Championships of School Sport Australia, which were held at Richlands in Brisbane. The competition ran from 16th to 20th September. Victoria’s first game was against ACT. It was quite thrilling and exciting, as we scored two quick goals and were up 2-0 at half time. We had more chances to finish the game off but couldn’t so we held them off to the end to win our first game 2-0. The game against South Australia was a lot tougher than we expected and we were down 2-0 at half time. Fortunately the boys showed great character and fought back. We went mental when we scored our third goal to make it 2-3 Victoria’s way. It was a fantastic comeback to beat SA and we had a 100% success record at the end of day 1. Day 2 was probably the biggest day of the tournament for us. We were playing our arch rivals New South Wales! We were massively anxious and nervous with a little bit of excitement going into this match. We had a phenomenal start with a lucky free kick off a keeper mistake. We all celebrated but then we scored another! We couldn’t believe it! We were up 2-nil at half time. Victoria then had an even better second half and we finished by beating our rivals 4-0! On Day 3, we first played Northern Territory. It was 32 degrees and it was an easier game. We beat them by two goals com-fortably in the end. We were really focusing on the game against WA who had also won all their games. We started off really well by scoring against WA, but then they equalised soon after. At half time it was 1-all. Nobody could manage to score in the second half, so it resulted in a draw. Day 4 was it - if we won against Queensland, we would win the championships! It was really tense in the dressing room before the match. We all knew how important this match was. We started the match on the back foot and then conceded 2 goals, everything was going wrong. We then scored back late in the second half but it proved to be just a consolation. We lost 2-1. We were all devastated. It was an amazing experience, even though we didn’t win the Championships. NSW won the Championship. I’d love to do it again. Gus Coleman Grade 6L, Beaumaris PS

LEVEL LOW DOWN Prep

What a great start back to the last term of our one and only Prep year! This week we would love you to help us collect lots of items to help us learn about simple 3D shapes. Small boxes, small cones, small cylinders (sorry, NO toilet rolls), small cubes, small spheres. Common theme is small! These items will be used in construction and will not be returned. We are also learning how to write a simple procedural text which is writing about how to do something and the order in which it has to be done. We had writing about how to do a hand stand, how to feed a bird, how to plant a flower, how to make a sandwich and even how to make a baby! Don’t worry it was very innocent and very funny. It went like this- “I think I will write about how to make a baby.

There is an egg It goes in your tummy When my brother was born he punched his way out…..

But I’ve already started another one.. How to build with blocks. I think I’ll write about the blocks!” This is a very busy time of year so please make sure you read all the notices and keep up to date with the daily calendar!

Year One

The Year one students have started term 4 very enthusiastically and it sounds as if they all had an enjoyable break. We have just begun a focus on reading and performing short plays. The narrators role has been most popular. During the next five weeks students will regularly read, perform and compose short plays. Don’t be surprised if you have to become a character at home and act out a part. Our mathematics focus for the next few weeks will be on multiplication. Students have been playing the game row race. We even had students co-ordinating and playing row race during Investigations they loved it so much!

Year Two

Welcome back to all the Year 2 families! We hope everyone had a relaxing and well deserved break. In investigations our new sensory learning environment has been a hit! We also have new areas of an Art Gallery and a Garden Centre. One of our learning intentions for the first two weeks of term is to “use a clear voice when speaking”. We are getting lots of practice with this because today we recorded our voices for the school magazine and next week we are having a Media Roadshow where we will be creating news shows, acting and creating our very own animation. This is on top of the clear voices we use in front of an audience when we are a focus child, reporter and photographer in investigations. Our text type focus for the first half of the term in Poetry. We have started looking at cinquains; reading, writing and sharing them. In maths we are learning about fractions, mostly halves, quarters and eighths. We are using lots of hands on materials to helps us develop our understanding. Miss Sheppard will be back from her big trip next week and we are really excited to hear all of her wonderful stories! Term 4 is shaping up to be a busy, productive term! Also, if families have any safe tinkering materials that they are happy to donate we would love to have them. Some examples are old radios, computers, phones, CD players, locks and keys.

Year Three Welcome back to a new term. In grade 3 we have started research for our ERP’s, gathering information, data, facts and resources. We will be presenting our ERP’s in an Expo on Friday the 8th of November from 8:30-9:30am; we hope all friends and family can come along and look at all the students’ hard work. the students’ are very excited to present their work and discuss their learning intentions. We look forward to a fun and productive term ahead!

Year Four Year 4 students are enjoying working very hard to complete their Guinea Coast Masks for the Art Sale for our fete. We are gluing all sorts of interesting items on our masks, including feathers, buttons, paper, tin and very colourful beads. We are sure our parents and families will LOVE our work!!!

Year Five Welcome back to Term 4! We have a very exciting term ahead of us. The Grade 5's commence Bike Ed next week, so please ensure that everyone has their bikes and helmets ready to start on Monday. Just a reminder that bikes need to be road worthy and helmets need to meet the Australian Standards. Thank you Mr Jarvis for all of the time and effort you have put in already organising the program. Also thank you to all of those parents that offered to help out with the program, we could not run it without you. Have a great weekend.

Year Six

Welcome back to term 4. We hope everyone had and exciting and restful holiday. Our year 6 students have a fantastic term in store. Our Health focus is launched and we are currently looking at our learning intentions and making links to our interests. What an amazing range of ideas! Camp notices have gone home for our Merricks Lodge adventure on November 11th. Extras copies are available on our website. Our house captains are preparing the year 3-6 talent show and filming for our yearbook will be done tomorrow. Children will have an opportunity to talk about their highlights and achievements for the year. Can’t wait to see their reflections. Year 6-7 TRANSITION If your child’s original destination school has changed, please contact Robyn in the office so we can update our records. Many thanks.
