Some Simple Verbal and Nonverbal Skills for Creating a Highly Favorable First Impression Citing several real-life stories, most of them humorous, V.J. first establishes why all professionals should care about the kind of impression they create with a new acquaintance. He then shares with participants some simple verbal and nonverbal techniques they can readily employ to create a highly favorable first impression. Using PowerPoint slides, video clips, and anecdotes to make his points and illustrate his ideas and techniques, V.J. will cover a wide range of subtopics, including: "the principle of matching contrasts" for impactful attire; the visceral attraction of dental enamel; the "three-pump" handshake; the unwitting diminution of women's communications; impact of a single word that is out-of-the-ordinary and strong, vivid, and evocative; the most effective way to answer a “why” question; combating verbal tics and other common faux pas; specific tips for foreign-borns.
Pre-dinner Speaker:

Dinner Presentation:
Riding The Waves of Change: How to Manage for Smooth Project Sailing Project initiatives often encounter rough waters because the organization asks employees to do something different. Furthermore initiatives muddy the waters when change management processes and tools aren’t aligned and integrated into the overall project management framework. Organizations can take steps to help employees take to change as a duck takes to water. Only 30% of change efforts fully meet their business goals (John Kotter, Leading Change). Unlike most change management presentations that focus on failure rates of change management efforts, Mark Hordes will present the critical success factors and “must-do” steps to enable your change management interventions to succeed and sustain the test of time. Gain insight from a change management expert, who brings over 25 years of change experience leading and managing change management engagements, to help transform your organization into a world-class change capable company with change management as the key enabler to your success.
Dinner Meeting Speaker:

Presentation Title: Risk Management
The financial services industry can teach us a lot about managing risk. Everything they do can be converted into dollars and cents, and the results of their actions can be easily shown to affect the bottom line profit (or loss) for the organization. Therefore, they have developed sophisticated techniques for managing their risks. We may not have access to the same armies of mathematicians or analysts, but we can still learn some lessons from their frameworks and processes to help manage risk in our projects and portfolios.

SW Meeting: Speaking Skills with Toastmasters
Location:
Schlumberger Sugar Land Campus
Forum Cafe

Topic: Speaking Skills with Toastmasters
All of us as Project Managers can improve on our leadership and speaking skills, especially for presentations. Bruce and some other PMs will
put on a demonstration meeting to show how some Project Managers in the Toastmasters organization are improving their PM leadership and
presentation skills. PM Toastmasters is a Public Speaking and Leadership group that is sponsored by PMI-Houston. There are two local PM
clubs that meet to help each other improve their PM skills by speaking about important PM topics. PDUs are earned for those PM
Toastmasters that have their PMP certification. Come watch this demonstration meeting and hear some great short speeches about project
management topics and the benefits of being in the Toastmasters organization. Depending on the interest level, there will be some time for
discussion about starting another PM Toastmasters club in the Sugarland-Katy area.

Downtown Meeting
Stories, Group Norms, and Culture
Agenda:
5:00 - 5:30 pm Networking 5:30 - 6:30 pm Program
Stories create culture by default or by design. When you share true stories of shared values you can embed cohesive team culture, positive
habits and group norms that reinforce personal responsibility, collaboration, conflict resolution and meeting deadlines.
Learn to model authenticity with a personal story that illustrates “who you are” and “why you are here.” Consciously providing examples of
expectations through demonstrates and reinforces the values you seek. Choosing stories with intention ensures stories of mission and values
outnumber the naturally high number of entertaining war stories and stress stories we tend to share.
Bullet points, ground rules, and lists of values are superficial without personal experiences (i.e. stories) that demonstrate them in action. Make
work feel meaningful by helping people interpret their “Who I am” and “Why I am Here” stories through the lens of this particular project and
these particular work relationships.

‘Let Our People talk…’
Timely Tips… ‘LEAN’
Timely Tips
All or All of?
Is it correct to say, “All of the cars had been stolen”? Or should I write, “All the cars had been stolen”? According to The Chicago Manual of Style, we should delete the ‘of’ whenever possible. (All the cars had been stolen.) There are exceptions, however. (It seems that there are always exceptions when it comes to the English language!) Use ‘all of’ when it precedes: • A nonpossessive pronoun (all of us) • A possessive noun (all of Texas A&M’s players). So . . . All my exes live in Texas. (There is no need for 'of.') Please give all of them my condolences. All of George Strait’s exes live in Texas. Brought to you by our very own Grammar Goddess and Senior Editor, Rhonda Cavender.
