As WRLC and Area Competition approaches, have you looked through your

closet to see if you have the appropriate clothing? Washington DECA has a

much more strict dress code than any other state association and that’s

because we hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Ladies; remember to always wear closed toed shoes, nylons, and your skirts

at knee length! Gentlemen; ties always go great with a button up shirt and

pair of slacks!

At WRLC you will see kids from other states walking around in denim, but

remember for Washington DECA members, NO DENIM. That’s a must. If an

advisor, Washington DECA Staff or State Officer sees you in denim, you will

be asked to changed. So take a look at these pictures to help you in your

packing process!

Other ways to get points...

Inside Story Headline

Spirit Award! The purpose of the Area Spirit Award is to get members, advisors, and chapters as a whole more involved in activities. A chapter wins by having the most points in their spirit award “account” at the end of the DECA year. Points can be obtained in multiple ways such as; attending an Area event, “liking” the Area 6 FB Page, sending Britany a picture of your

DECA Chapter, having a chapter visitation, or being the fastest email reply to any email updates Britany sends out. The winning chapter is given the trophy, shown at the left, to keep in their DECA classroom for the following school year. The trophy will be engraved with the school name and winning year. My hope is that future Area 6

President’s will continue the Area 6 Spirit Award, therefore the trophy will be a “traveling” trophy and have many different school names on it. The points for each chapter will be shown in each newsletter. If you ever have any questions about how your chapter got its points, ask Britany!

Spirit Award Points:

Chiawana - 160

Grandview - 3

Hanford - 203

Kahlotus - 0

Kamiakin – 238

Kennewick - 240

Pasco – 235

Richland - 280

Southridge - 241

**The Area President’s home chapter can only earn points for events that do not require the Area President’s attendance.

Area 6 October Member of the Month

Jasmin Garcia, Pasco High School

Why did you join DECA?

I joined DECA my junior year—I remember my older cousins, Ruben and Eric Garcia,

telling me before I even got into high school, “Join DECA!” I wanted to join because I

was interested in marketing, unfortunately, things didn’t work out, and the timing

wasn’t right. It wasn’t until my junior year when I joined 0 Hour School Store that I got

involved with DECA. Looking back at the short time I have been in DECA, I regret not

joining sooner, and if I had the chance to go back in time, I would have joined DECA as a

freshman.

How has DECA benefited you?

I find myself remembering things I learned in DECA and

applying it my other classes, especially at my internship

at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center in the business

department. The skills that DECA gives to you can be

applied in anything else you do.

How has DECA influenced the rest of your life?

DECA has influenced me to be active in the things that go

on in Pasco High School, which is something I didn’t do

before I joined. It has also influenced me to become a

great leader, delegator, and competitor, and to continue

with my goal in having a career that intertwines with

marketing.

What do you contribute to Pasco DECA?

I contribute to Pasco DECA by creating events for people to get interested and involved

in DECA, coming up with fundraising ideas and developing community service projects.

In addition, I support our chapter by helping sell apparel at the football games and

volunteering. I find I am able to manage the many DECA activities we have planned by

splitting up big tasks into smaller ones to try and make things run efficiently.

With DECA Month coming full speed ahead, Hanford DECA was anxious to organize an event

to get our members excited about community service and kick off the year on a good note.

Our chapter focuses on leading with love, servitude being a high priority. Unfortunately, there

hadn’t been any opportunities in the community that specifically stood out to the team.

Then, at Wednesday’s officer meeting an idea of helping victims Hurricane Sandy was

interjected and the team instantly decided it was an excellent fit for a DECA month event.

The death toll reached 74 people as of November 1st due to this horrific natural disaster. Power

outages have been reported from 5.6 million businesses and homes. These shocking numbers

are what encouraged our team not only to do our part, but to invite all of Area 6 to take part

despite the late notice.

The plan is to conduct a Miracle Minute, a method that was brought to our attention at last

year’s Area 6 Competition. During lunches on Wednesday, November 7th and Thursday,

November 8th. Officers and sixteen members will introduce the concept to the cafeteria. Then,

upbeat music will blast through the speakers, and for 60 seconds DECA members will run

around the cafeteria collecting as much change from the student body as possible. We chose

to operate the event for two days, in hopes that Thursday will bring students prepared to do

their part. Along with the Miracle Minute, Hanford DECA will be accepting donations all week

long. After all calculations have been made, the funds will be

mailed directly to the Red Cross with a letter specifying that they

be used specifically for those individuals in need.

The energy at Hanford DECA is at all-time high. We are looking

forward to making an impact in some lives before heading to

WRLC to be impacted ourselves, by the propitious conference that Western Region DECA has

in store for us.
