A few years ago my family got to the end of September and realised that although we all love the beach and it is so close we only made it twice that summer. This felt odd as we appreciate it loads but had just got distracted by 100 other (often important) things meaning we did not make the most of it. Last year we decided to do something about it to stop ourselves ending up in the same position. We made a family plan to pick up the kids from school on Friday whenever possible and head straight down to the beach for a couple of hours. This plan inevitably yielded fantastic family times together. As I thought about our focus on going ‘Deeper & Wider’ this year at Revs, I felt there are a lot of parallels for us in this with our engaging with the Bible. We can appreciate it, even love it, and most of us have at least one close to hand, but we can find ourselves at the end of a season of life realising we have not spent time with God’s word. I love the summer and the change

Why did I get involved with Alpha? Basically because I was challenged to bring someone!

It had been on my mind who to ask and I found myself having dinner with a friend and colleague one night, and before I really knew what I was saying I was asking her to come and do Alpha. She agreed and I absolutely loved sharing the course with her. It has deepened our friendship and I think is one of the reasons that we still keep in touch, even though we no longer work together. Since that fi rst Alpha, I’ve hosted and helped organise two more.

I actually get excited now about whom I can ask. My advice - think creatively about whom you could

ask. That next-door neighbour you keep saying ‘Hi’ to, or the lady who always serves you in the shop, could

be the exact person who God’s

prompting you to ask!

We are launching our next Alpha Course on 21st September. We would love to have a lively course so please think about whom you could invite or bring along. If you would like to volunteer to help at Alpha, please email Lee ([email protected]).

Helen Monkton has been part of Revs for 17 years! She loves baking cakes, swimming in lakes and generally being out and about in our fi ne countryside.

The project has really moved on in the last few months as it continues to gain support from statutory bodies. One of the latest supporters to put their weight behind the project is ChiBAC (Chichester Businesses Against Crime). The next phase is going to involve recruiting and training a team of volunteers from across the churches in Chichester. We are also working with assistance from the District Council to raise funds to launch. The fi nal update at present on the project is that we now have a name for it, ‘City Angels’. If you are interested in volunteering or fi nding out more please contact Lee Nancarrow on [email protected]

Mobile Coffee Bar“I’m using an ancient tradition of reading the Bible called Lectio Divina, which is about meditating on a verse or two. Simply choose a passage, relax a few minutes in silence in God’s presence letting your mind still, then read the passage slowly, recognise what bit jumps out at you, refl ect on this, read the passage a couple more times, respond to what God is saying to you and rest again in God’s presence for a few minutes in silence. Give it a go!”

Rachel Bentley had been part of Revs for over 20 years and heads up international children’s charity Children on the Edge.

This summer we will be continuing our journey going “Deeper” into God’s word by looking at John’s gospel and Jesus’ “I am” statements.

Over four weeks of the summer holidays we will be looking at these statements to get a better understanding of who Jesus is. We will be looking at:

“I am the bread of life”

“I am the light of the world”

“I am the good shepherd”

“I am the true vine”

Looking at these metaphors Jesus used to describe himself is a great way to gain a

better understanding of Jesus being fully God and fully human. They reveal aspects of Jesus’ purpose and character, helping us to follow more closely and understand to a greater depth the role of Jesus as Messiah and Man. Come and join us for a cracking series of ‘Summer Shorts’… and make sure you bring the sunshine!

Will Moore has been part of Revs for 9 years and this July celebrates his fi rst anniversary with his wife Lou. He’s into cycling, fl ying kites, owning vineyards and listening to Mumford and Sons.

The sun is shining and the weather is sweet… well, it should be even if it isn’t, because summer is here! In response to the slower pace of life during the summer holidays, we will be having ‘Summer Shorts’ gatherings. These are shorter gatherings running for an hour each, starting at the usual time of 11am.

‘Summer Shorts’

“Our cell is going deeper by studying books of the Bible and we have just fi nished Ecclesiastes. It was great to look at this Old Testament book and have discussions around the subjects that it raises. I loved hearing people’s opinions and the debates that it brought up”.

Tom is spending July in Australia recovering from working as Student Worker on the Revs staff team. He graduated with a degree in Theology from Chi Uni in 2010 and is starting a Primary PGCE in September.
