I am proud to say that our in-house magazine is of a
superior quality and equal to the best in the industry.
I have was concerned when you took up the
responsibility of bringing out the magazine as we did
not have such a magazine in the organisation earlier.
It is needless to say that you have stood apart in your
efforts, which I understand made you spend many
sleepless nights and moments of worries. In fact, the
FACEBOOK, in it's first publication, has reflected a
very high quality of innovative ideas, appropriate
applications and superior editing. The first
publication shall remain a fond memory in the
history of our organization.
I sincerely applaud the good work executed by you
and your team and the same should remain an
inspiration for all of us in the organization. It is now a
challenge for you and your team to continue to be
innovative and achieve finer results in your future
editions. Keep increasing the number of feathers in
your cap !!

E ditorial
Dear Colleagues,
Nice to be back again, after a hearty response to the Issue 1 of
our in-house magazine “FACEBOOK”. The quarter has been full
of activities with the sports, training programs, workshop on 7
habits, Accountants' Meet, CW Award Ceremony and Annual
General Meeting, 2010.
While we were sure that an in house magazine would be a great
medium for information sharing, we were not sure of the
participation from people. No sooner did we send out the appeal
for contributions, we were flooded with articles ! This was a
great motivator, and we set about preparing the magazine,
benchmarking it against the best in the industry. Since every
organization is made up of people and others are usually
interested in knowing about the company's employees and its
activities, a newsletter is certain to be a hit. I am proud to say that
we were able to accomplish this objective. We launched thFACEBOOK on 12 August 2010 at the hands of our Managing
Director, Mr. JK Sardana. That was a very special day for us!
We have also launched the Sports events in the company. It is a
pleasure to watch so many colleagues participate and take joy in
it.
It's Diwali time again! Diwali is one the most important, hugely
waited and immensely cherished festivals celebrated across
India. Diwali also popularly known as “Festival of Lights”. People
of different nationalities, races, religions and backgrounds come
together to share their joys generating a feeling of universal
brotherhood and inter-religious harmony.
With glow of Diyas, and the echo of the chants, may
happiness and contentment fill your life, wishing you a
very happy and prosperous Diwali!!
Happy Reading,
N Supriya , Editor
We look forward to your thoughtful responses and continued
support.
UBEL started erection of Blast Furnace
at the plant of SAIL at Burnpur, West
Bengal, about 16 months back. The
Blast Furnace is the first of its kind in
terms of size and capacity. The volume
is 4300 cu. Mtr. and the height is 105
m t r s , t o p r o d u c e
8000 MT of molten iron everyday on
commissioning. This is the biggest
Blast Furnace being constructed in
India. UBEL is constructing such
complete Blast Furnace along with
associated facilities for the first time in
its history.
The Blast Furnace, during operation,
will discharge gas of very high
temperature (app. 800°C) which is
collected from the furnace top. This
high temperature gas is channeled
through a single pipe, called
DOWNCOMR, from the top of the
furnace to Dustcatcher and thereafter
travels through cleaning equipment
for various interim uses subsequently,
as the temperature falls. This gas finally
reaches through duct lines to its
originating equipments, namely Hot
Blast Stoves, where it is reheated to
approximately 1200°C and resent to
the Blast Furnace. It is therefore of
utmost importance that the gas is
collected from the Blast Furnace as a
byproduct and reused efficiently. Thus
the role of the DOWNCOMER remains
crucial.
This DOWNCOMER is of gigantic size,
matching with the enormous
dimension of the Blast Furnace. Length
is around 183 ft, diameter is 11 ft.,
total weight being approximately
100MT and it is not a straight pipe. The
top end is bent at 41 degrees, with a
further upward rolling of 11 degrees,
resulting in a complex three-
dimensional shaped component. The
top (bent and rolled) end is matched
and attached with an angular nozzle at
the top of the furnace at a height of
310 ft. and the rear end with
Dustcatcher nozzle (150 ft.high), the
gradient becoming 46 degrees. The
erection has been done with a 1200
MT capacity crane, which is not easily
available in the country. To get a vivid
image of this installation, imagine
some people standing at a height of 30
storey building at one end and some at
the elevation of 14 storey building at
the other end, both on makeshift
4 Facebook Qtr 2 2010|
hanging platforms, nothing below
them, handling a 100 MT heavy pipe
hanging at an angle from a crane in air
for difficult matching and perfect
installation at both the ends, the lateral
distance between the two groups
being 105 ft., without any kind of
vertical support in between.
Completion of Downcomer erection is
considered the most critical milestone
of work for construction of a Blast
Furnace, since thereafter erection
activities are easy and not major. Last
available record for the duration of
downcomer erection is 11days . UBEL
did it in 7 days, from start to finish of
the erection activity !
It is also a record that UBEL has done
this erection in a single piece, with a
single crane and in one go, whereas
statistics say that in almost all cases it
has been done in more than one
pieces, with at least two cranes and in
2/3 attempts.
Almost a month's hard work for
assembly and preparation and around
118 hours of continuous backbreaking
efforts by our engineers, technicians
and workers during actual erection
remains the prime input towards this
maiden achievement of UBEL.
Is it not remarkable!!

Nature of job : Engineering , Procurement and Construction
(EPC) to be commissioned in 16.50 months. The value of the
project is Rs.74.98 crores.
Challenges of the Project
Due to land constraint, the layout of the substation and the
civil design were very critical as this area receives heavy
rainfall in monsoon. As the substation is located in a remote
village area the approach road of the project is critical.
The project is to be linked with upcoming 225MW combined
cycle power plant. This will fulfill power shortage to the
nearby industrial area in Uttarkhand.

UBEL has achieved another milestone in the construction sector for its fastest growth. UBEL has been awarded “Third
Fastest Growing Construction Company” (Small category less than Rs.600 crores) as per the Construction World
Annual 2010 Study. The award ceremony was held on October 19, 2010 at Mumbai and the award was received by
Mr. J.K. Sardana, Managing Director at the hands of Governor of Maharashtra Shri K Sankaranarayanan.
On this occasion, we would like to congratulate all the employees of the company and appreciate their efforts to achieve
this recognition for the second time. We have no doubt that with the hard work and dedication of the employees, we
shall continue to scale greater heights. In fact, next year we should be aiming at the award in the Medium Category as
we are sure to cross annual turnover of Rs.600 crs.

Units.
The scope of work: Erection, Alignment, Testing and Commissioning of Boiler,

Plant, ETP, CTP, CW Pump House, inter connecting piping etc). All Electrical
(Including 220 KV Switchyard), I & C works.
The total project order is valued at Rs. 71.66 crores.
Project challenges:
Since the customer is a Chinese company, we had to build confidence in the
client by offering satisfactory solutions and good communication. Our rapport
with SEPCC resulted in additional work from CEPCC of unit 3 and left out jobs
of Unit 1 & 2 directly from KSK/WPCL.
We also earned credibility by completing incomplete jobs for Unit # 1 and 2
which were initially undertaken by the Chinese who could not complete them
due to visa problem of Unit # 1 & 2.
To ensure timely execution of the project we increased the manpower from
250 Nos. to 600 Nos. Initially and during peak period of Project from 600 Nos.
to 1370 Nos. with tools, machines, cranes and accommodation near plant
area.
It was very challenging for us to work under new working methods and new
terminologies like Setting – For Insulation, Heating Surface for Pressure Parts,
Kolu for Boiler, which were the Chinese words given in the drawings and
packing list.

governments to the four devastating hurricanes that hit their countries last year: while 2 million Cubans were affected by the hurricanes, there were only 7 deaths. In Haiti, there were 423 deaths reported among the 800,000 people affected by the storms. The Cuban disaster response system is one of the strongest in the world, with early warning systems which reach deep into communities.
Mobilizing funds to support victims of natural disasters—at least the big natural disasters which make headlines is usually easier than raising money for long-term actions to prevent large-scale casualties. Some relief agencies have adopted policies that 10 percent (or more) of the funds they raise to respond to disasters will be dedicated to risk reduction.
Reducing the risks of natural disasters saves lives as surely as sending in relief supplies after disaster has struck. Even as the international community springs into reaction to
respond to these recent devastating disasters, we should be preparing for the disasters to come and planning on how to reduce their human casualties. It's time to take disaster risk reduction seriously.

Natural disasters:
Thinking beyond immediate response
Tsunami in Samoa, massive flooding in Manila, earthquake in Sumatra – if you think there are more catastrophic acts of nature these days, you're right. In fact, the number of natural disasters has doubled in the past twenty years. Last year some 400 natural disasters affected over 200 million people, killing 16,000 people and displacing close to 50 million from their homes. And scientists tell us that disasters, particularly hydrometer logical disasters – flooding, cyclones, hurricanes, etc. – are likely to increase in both frequency and severity as a result of climate change.
The international system has a well-developed capacity to respond quickly to major disasters. But this takes time. Most of the lives saved in the immediate aftermath of a disaster are the result of local action – of neighbors pawing through rubble to rescue trapped victims, of local churches and mosques setting up systems to distribute food, of families opening up their homes to people whose houses are now under water. While most Western media attention focuses on the international response, much more should be done to support local communities to respond to disasters.
Communities may not be able to prevent torrential floods or hurricanes, but there are clearly steps they can take to reduce the impact of such disasters on their communities. Compare the response of the Cuban and Haitian

A graphic novel that re-imagines Delhi in 1970s. Imagine waking up one morning to learn
that all your rights as a citizen are suspended this moment onwards. Imagine living the
way the State tell you to - being told how, where and when to laugh, live or love. Imagine
constant surveillance - all your acts, words, thoughts watched, all forms of expression
subverted for the purpose of nation-building. ̀Work More, Talk Less’, yell microphones as
you walk down the streets ... But do not worry - Delhi is still calm. It is the India of mid-

Sinhagad is a very famous fort in the vicinity of Pune. It is popular for a fun outing as well as for trekking. The fort is famous for the story of Tanaji Malusare, a trustworthy sainik of Shivaji Maharaj, who scaled this difficult fort. Tanaji Kada (cliff) is so called because this is the same steep cliff that Tanaji Malusare climbed with the help of a monitor lizard to win one of the most famous battles for Sinhagad to recapture the fort. He ultimately bought the fort in Swarajya but had to sacrifice his life. Sweet curd, buttermilk, Kanda bhaji and Pithle-Bhakari of Sinhagad is the main attraction for visitors. From here you get a panoramic view of the entire Pune city. Our trek to Sinhagad was not pre planned. One rainy day, around 15 colleagues decided to plan a trip to Sinhagad to experience the monsoon. We were excited as we were planning to climb by an uncommon route to reach the fort. Since it was a half day trek, not much preparation was required. We started early in the morning at 6:30am, reached the village called Aatkarwadi, by 7.15am and started climbing immediately. We reached the top by 10.00am. The trek was enjoyable with greenery all around. We did make a lot of stops on the way for photo sessions. One particular view was amazing. The whole valley was in the shade with the sun rays falling on a small area in the middle.
On reaching at the top of the hill, we had breakfast, tea and the famous Kanda Bhaji. Then we decided to see all the viewing points on the fort. Of all the places worth visiting, the wind point is the spot I liked most. At this point the force of the wind is so strong that it sometimes pushes you backwards in the direction of the wind. I sat there for

5-10 minutes with my eyes closed, feeling the cold air and nature around me. It's was a wonderful experience.
On return journey we stopped at Khadakwasla Dam. The dam was a pretty sight with revelers enjoying the waves and eating corn! Away from the din of city life when you want to spend some moments of solitude, places like Khadakwasla become the perfect getaways. Khadakwasla is famous for a big dam which serves as the main source of water supply to the city of Pune. You can come here any time to make your weekends blissful. But usually the monsoon is considered to be the best time to visit when the nature is at its prime beauty.

Sports bring freshness and joy to our otherwise busy lives. To balance the pressures of work life, we formed a Sports Committee headed by Ms. N Supriya for conducting the various sports activities like Carom, Chess, Football, Cricket, Badminton, Table Tennis and Swimming. Activities to be conducted during the year were planned and declared. We were surprised and overjoyed by the response we received from employees.
The sports event was launched with a carom tournament. The matches played with great enthusiasm, with the audience participating by cheering.
B a d m i n t o n a n d C h e s s competitions have already begun. We look forward to some exciting sports activities in the future.

What is Motivation
Motivation is the inner power that pushes toward acting,
performing actions and achieving. In simple terms, it is a
reason to do. Motivation is like the fuel of the car, you may
have a car to get you from point A to B but you need the
fuel for your car to reach your destination. So the common
questions you often hear is “What motivates you?”
Motivation has much to do with desire and ambition, and if
they are absent, motivation is absent too. Motivation
strengthens ambition, increases initiative and gives
direction, courage, energy and the persistence to follow
one's goals. Motivation becomes strong when you have a
vision, a clear mental image of what you want to achieve,
and also a strong desire to materialize it.
Self-Motivation
Do you find that you have a lack of self motivation at
times? Something less important catches your attention,
or you just don't feel like doing what you need to do. Even
if you are normally a motivated person, there may be times
when you have a hard time getting started on an important
task.
The power will always be within you, but nothing will
happen until you get and stay motivated to make
something happen, to change your life and achieve your
desires.
Motivation at workplace
Those who are successful in the workplace are usually
those with a lot of drive and determination. Every person
who works has a different reason for working. While most
people do work for money, many others work because
they love their jobs and because they want a sense of
fulfillment. The best way to promote motivation

different and is motivated for different reasons. They need
to understand what each employee wants and their reason
for working. Workers in any organization need something
to keep them working. If no motivation is present in an
employee, then that employee's quality of work or all work
in general will deteriorate.
Motivated employees always look for better ways.
Motivated employees are more quality oriented.
Motivated workers are more productive.
An effective leader must understand how to manage all
characters, and more importantly the manager must utilize
avenues that allow room for employees to work, grow,
and find answers independently.
Lack of Motivation
Often, a person has the desire and ambition to get
something done or achieve a certain goal, but lacks the
push, the initiative and the willingness to take action. This
is due to lack of motivation and inner drive.
Steps to enhance your motivation1. Start Simple
2. Keep good company
3. Keep learning
4. Stay positive
5. Stop thinking, just do it
6. Know yourself
7. Track your progress
8. Help others
Motivation is a very powerful factor which you can use to
create, build, overcome, and plays a very important part in
helping people in any business or personal achievement.
Motivation is present whenever there is a clear vision,
precise knowledge of what one wants to do, a strong
desire and faith in one's abilities. Motivation is one of the
most important keys to success. When there is lack of
motivation you either get no results, or only mediocre
results, whereas when there is motivation you attain
greater and better results and achievements.
A man can succeed at almost anything for which he has unlimited
