To the editor... I am secretary of CLASA Loss and Grief Support (CLASA is Cowra Loss and Suicide Awareness). We are situated at 21 Centre Arcade Cowra and we provide volunteer support Monday to Thursdays 10am-4pm and are contact-able on 02 6342 2292. Last Tuesday 3 September we held our Suicide and Loss Memorial Ceremony at the Japanese Garden as a way of supporting people who have experienced a suicide in the family, or other deep loss. As a way of honouring the memories of those lost guests were invited to write a message for their loved-one and place it into a paper lantern. These were lit and set adrift on the lake as the sun began to set. It was in the lead-up to Tuesday 10 September Suicide Awareness Day and Thursday 12 September's R U OK Day. One of our guest speakers was Debbie Rutter, Canowindra writer, who was an early member of CLASA and has compiled numerous books of poetry and prose to support people in times of grief and loss. If you would like anything further please feel free to ask. Cheers, Cheryl O'Grady, Gooloogong

WILL WRIGHT XSELS IN MIND MARATHON Mind Marathon is in its seventh year of competition and is hosted and organised by East Hills Boys Technology High School. It takes place over several days, with Xsel competed on Friday 30 August 2013. Xsel is a competitive team day of quizzes and practical problem solving based on the topic areas of: History; Geography; Science; English; Maths; Above and Beyond; and General Knowledge. There were four teams of six students from the Western Region virtual selective high school 'Xsel'. The Year 7/8 boys team competed against 17 other teams. The schools that compete are mostly selective schools from Sydney and surroundings. This year’s competition was won by an Xsel team, which Canowindra High School is proud to acknowledge that Will Wright was a member of. The team consisted of 3 Year 7s and three Year 8s and the Year 7/8 Xsel girls came second. Will was selected for the team after demonstrating his passion and skill for trivia at a residential school for Xsel. It was a great day and fantastic that Will was given the opportunity to participate.

CRIME PREVENTION IN CANOWINDRA A community meeting has been organised to address residents’ concerns regarding the increased rate of crime and reduced police presence in Canowindra and surrounding districts. A petition was started at the end of August 2013 by Crime in Canowindra, addressed to NSW Police Superintendent of Canobolas Local Area Command David Driver, and Inspector Gerard Powell of Cowra Sector, to "Provide a permanent rostered police presence in town." Since then, a massive response has seen over 1,100 signatures collected from concerned citizens. Superintendent Driver and Inspector Powell have agreed to attend the public meeting to be held 4pm Tuesday 17 September 2013 in the Canowindra Community Hall next to the Canowindra Services Club. Everyone living in the district policed by the Cowra Sector is encouraged to attend, to show support for the protection of our people, property and police presence. Chaired by Canowindra Business Chamber Eddy Wilkinson, the meeting has been organised with the support of the Chamber, the Crime in Canowindra Facebook page and The Canowindra Phoenix. Should you wish to attend however are unable, please contact Phil Gersbach at [email protected] or Jo Gaigals on 0418 413 753 so that your concerns can be raised in the meeting. Crime in Canowindra was established on Facebook in November 2012 as a response to crimes committed against persons and property in Canowindra: not as a means of reporting however, but to create awareness once crime had been identified and reported. Remember: for emergencies contact Triple Zero 000; for police presence for a local non emergency situation contact Canowindra Police Station on 02 6344 1300; to report an incident that does not require police to attend phone 131 444.
