Originating from WTNR/Grand Rapids and helmed by the multi-behatted Steve “Scrubs” Stewart, the show expanded from it’s two “home” markets (including WFBE/Flint) by adding mornings at Citadel’s KATC/Colorado Springs and WXTA/Erie. Rather than being on a corporate-mandated fast track, however, Scrubs In The Morning is growing up organically and may or may not aspire to be the next big thing. The event raises money for Second Harvest Food Bank and St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and is presented by SOLID. WKMK has done a few things in the market,” he says. “First and foremost, country music fans finally have something to call their own on a local level. That’s so important. And for my sake, I finally have a viable, effective means by which to reach those fans.” Roughly 20 miles Northwest of Monmouth, Starland is now a potential tour stop for Nashville acts. “We positively look forward to hosting more Country acts,” Vena says, noting Atkins’ 2,000 seat sellout. “The Thunder crew, from the ownership group down to the part-time promotions assistants, are class acts. They live their business and it shows.” For ‘KMK PD/afternooner Captain Jack, Atkins’ show is just one of the ways they’re feeling greater reach. “We have been enjoying huge success across the board,” he says. “We are doing a broadcast every Saturday from the Colorado Café in Watchung, NJ, which has been drawing around 1,500 weekly. Everywhere we go we have seen an amazing turn out.”

Moore Pranked By Paisley Brad Paisley wrapped his H2O World Tour 2010 Saturday in Tulsa (11/20), and opener Justin Moore must have walked away thinking, “Pranks for the memories.” KVOO PD/afternooner Luke Jensen has the story. “Justin usually has this really awesome musical intro,” he explains. “Well, Brad’s people took it over and played Randy Newman’s ‘Short People,’ then introduced him as the ‘Tiny Tornado.’ Then, during ‘I Could Kick Your Ass,’ several of Paisley’s crew members came out and used hot pink duct tape to tape him to a dolly, put a blonde wig and lipstick on him. “During his encore, ‘Gimme All Your Loving,’ pictures of Adam Lambert, Barry Mannilow, Betty White, Burt Reynolds (half naked), The Clampetts, Grandpa Munster, bald Britney Spears, Hillary Clinton, Tom Selleck, Pee Wee Herman and Nancy Pelosi appeared in the frame of a heart on the big screen. It was hilarious!” Watch video of the dolly incident here. Paisley starts is H2O Frozen Over Tour Jan. 20 in Green Bay, WI.

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

Clear Channel/Nashville VP/Market Manager Tom English discusses his most influential songs, albums or concerts:1. Garth Brooks, Friends In Low Places Tour, Columbia, SC, 1992: Garth changed the face of country concerts forever with that tour. The shows got bigger and more outrageous, but seeing the first one was an out-of-body experience. It also turned my “Motown” wife on to country. (Ed. Note: Ed Hill mentioned this same show in his My Tunes entry last week.)

2. Rare Earth, “Get Ready:” Yes, I love the Temptations version, too. [But] there’s something about this song that transports me back to the stage of the TOC Club in Pensacola, FL in 1971. Of the hundreds of songs I performed in my misspent youth, this is the song that puts me back in bell-bottoms and a velvet Nehru jacket every single time (yes...TMI).3. Big & Rich, Horse Of A Different Color: It’s a damn good thing you can’t wear a hole in a CD because this one would be ripped to shreds. I like Kenny and John individually, but there is something magical about the two of them together. In my 50+ years of listening [to music], I don’t believe there is an album I’ve played more, and I enjoy it just as much today as when I first heard it. 4. A Walk Down Abbey Road, Saenger Theater, Mobile, AL, 2001: Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Ann Wilson, John Entwistle and David Pack — all Beatles fans — performed their favorite Lennon & McCartney songs together. This was the last tour during which Entwistle played before he died in 2002. As an ex-bass player, getting to meet him was unforgettable.5. Bloodline, Bloodline: This amazing piece of work introduced a then 16-year-old “Smokin’ Joe” Bonamassa, along with a collection of legendary rock offspring (thus “Bloodline”). The band included Waylon Krieger (Robby’s son), Erin Davis (Miles’ son), Berry Oakley, Jr. and talented keyboardist Lou Segreti. I think they only made one album but it was a good ‘un.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Any Bruce Springsteen album (sorry, Stokes).• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: The Wall by Pink Floyd. Can the human body really survive that many drugs?• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Les Paul & Friends. I love hearing incredible artists cover songs of other incredible artists. Throw in the father of the electric guitar, and you have a one-of-a-kind musical collection.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “More Than It Would Seem,” Gabe Dixon Band (although it’s probably not considered “obscure” in Nashville).

Scrubs Adds Water (continued from page 1)‘Whoa, what do we have here?’ he said. ‘We just saved money and we’re No. 1 in Flint?’” Morning show changes in Erie and Colorado Springs presented an opportunity, but Stewart explains away any thoughts of a Citadel mandate. “Both were somewhat familiar with my show, which was offered as an option. None of this was forced. Both did their searches and at the end of the day, both wanted to give it a try.” Stewart says the expansions have been made possible by new technology called Tieline, which can deliver audio over IP to multiple locations. “Some stations don’t have satellite receivers,” Stewart explains. “We’re one of the first shows using this equipment this way.” Transitioning from a local or even statewide focus to reaching stations in other parts of the country hasn’t been too much of a stretch. “First and foremost, entertaining is entertaining,” Stewart says. “We play music – eight or nine songs an hour, so it’s not strictly talk. On the local level, the stations understand that if they’re going to go this route with us, they have to focus on having a good local talent running the show. We cut a lot of local stuff, usually the day before, and we build time into the clock for local traffic, interviews and news. “This show could work anywhere. I had the same type of show and the same great success in Myrtle Beach, where I was

before I came here. The other thing that’s appealing to the folks in Colorado Springs and Erie, is that there’s no ramp-up time. They don’t have to wait to see if a new morning personality is going to work.”” Neither the Colorado Springs nor Erie affiliates have been on the air for a full month yet. “All we’re really able to tell is how it feels, and we’re getting a ton of calls from both markets already. “A lot of this is happening because my direct boss Matt Hanlon, who is Citadel’s Regional President, believes in the show. We are wide open to talking to other markets and companies. If it grows to a level where Citadel Media wants to jump in and do something, great. If not, I’ll still love doing the show.” The low-key approach, as opposed to a coordinated clearance campaign, may work best anyway. “It takes the pressure off, to a certain extent,” Stewart says. “It’s organic and it’s not being forced on anyone. We have the technology to easily add stations, but there’s no big push. I’m also the company’s Midwest Dir./Country and Dir./Operations. I oversee 18 stations, so I’ve got enough work to do. This was never about me needing more to do. And truly, the best four hours of my day are 6-10am.” CAC
