Commodore’s Column Welcome to 2020 at Huddersfield Sailing Club. I’m very pleased to have been asked to be Commodore again. It doesn't seem long ago, but when I look at how things have moved on since my last stint, I can see we’re a club which is bucking the trends re-ported by the RYA. It's difficult to make a direct comparison, but it seems our most recent figures have actually shown that we are growing when the regional trend has been one of contraction.

Our membership is also more di-verse than other clubs in the region, though there is plenty of room for improvement. This is to the credit of the sailing club committees and eve-ryone else that help to organise events, maintain the building and are friendly, helpful and knowledge-able with new members. My thanks to everyone concerned but particu-larly to Richard Donkersley, Innes Bamford and Richard Burhouse, who stepped down from the committee at the AGM. We wish them a happy re-tirement and welcome Jo Stead who has joined the committee for the first time this year. After many years of watching her daughter, Arian, sail at Redbrook and Green Withens, Jo has taken this club to her heart. Sailing her Pico, Jo attended our Ladies training sessions a few years ago and has become an invaluable helper with new members.

There have been other changes. Roger Stephenson is your new Vice Commodore leaving the General Secretary role to Sarah McCabe. In addition to being a Trustee and the Treasurer, Allan Brooks now holds the Sailing Secretary position. This is his second stint in the role. I’ve al-ways thought he’s the sort of fellow who needs to be kept busy. Jason Milburn, ably helped by Rachel and Harry has taken on Membership as well as Social Secretary. Last but not least, Rachael Lockley moves to Rear Commodore and has also taken on Communications Secretary from Sarah. Rachael has set a high stan-dard during her tenure as Commo-dore. As incoming Commodore it will be difficult to maintain that stan-dard, but I will endeavour to do so.

Whilst we’re on the subject of committees, two of our committee members reach “milestones” this year. Jim Robison had his 80th birth-day around New Year and Roger Molyneux is 90 in May. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them many happy returns and I hope to catch them on starboard very soon!

You should have a 2020 sailing programme by now. It is available to download from the website if not. An electronic version is also available for anyone who wants to access their Race Officer dates on their phone or other device.

Boats out 2020 is on Saturday 14th March starting at the clubhouse at 9.30 am. As ever, we need as many people to be there as possible and all boat owners. In addition to getting the boats out, we have to get the clubhouse cleaned and tidied, ready for the season. If you are a boat owner and you can't be there your-self, please arrange for someone else to be there to look after your boat.

Our Annual Prize Giving will be held on Saturday 28th March at the

clubhouse starting at 7.30 pm. Your social secretary, Jason, and the Mil-burn family will organise. Read on for further details about this event and our wider social programme.

Last year our season was dis-rupted by the loss of the water for two months. But as I write this, storm Dennis rattles my windows and I know Boshaw will be very, very full. This year we intend to rise again with a full programme including an open day, the training programme, open meetings, fun events and so-cials. Club sailing kicks off with the April Fool series on 28th March. Our first home open meeting this year is the RS Aero Open held on 16th May, followed by the Single Handed Open on the 24th May. Once again, read on for further details.

Finally, your Newsletter. Do you have an article you would like to con-tribute; something for sale, some-thing you want, photographs? If so please send them to me at [email protected].

Paul O’Connor - Commodore 2020

Rachael Lockley reflects on her last year as Commodore 2019 started so well. Only a few days into the season we hosted BBC Look North following a re-quest for an interview on the 60th Anniversary of the collapse of the Emley Moor mast and how a part of it came to form our control tower. Delighted to be able to speak to the very person who had arranged it all, Ian White spent the morning with Roger Molyneux and his interview was screened that eve-ning. Great publicity for the club!

Shortly afterwards two new club Hartley dinghies arrived, the product of a second Sport England Small Grant. The Spring training sessions, together with a very successful open day on the May Bank Holiday, brought many new members to the club who started to sail. The three Hartley boats were in constant demand during the first part of the season and one was used to promote the club at our now regular stand at the Hade Edge Gala.

So after a very busy first half of the season, with lots of interest from our new members, we faced a challenging few months as Yorkshire Water was

forced to lower the water level of Boshaw to undertake essential repairs. We endured two frustrating months of not being able to sail. During this time an enormous amount of work went on behind the scenes liaising with Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and the fishermen to limit the damage to both clubs. One major positive that resulted from the water being lowered significantly was the demise of the weed which had been impeding our sail-ing during the early summer months.

Many beginners and new members from our open day and spring training returned to sailing at the end of the season and the Wednesday afternoon secret sailing proved extremely popular, and something that will be carried on in the future. The decision was taken not to hold the autumn training as by the time we were back into the swing of sailing ourselves, the weather and the water had turned colder and wasn’t so appealing for beginners. This means that we have amassed quite a list for our spring 2020 training which will start after Easter so after our winter rest we need to be ready to take over where we left off in August, building our membership and retaining those who have recently become members.

To round off the year we had a fantastic turn out at the Christmas Party, the culmination of all the hard work put in by Jason and Rachel, something I think deserves particular acknowledgement. Maintaining and developing a social aspect to the club plays an important part in making new people feel welcome.

And now, on a personal note, I would like to thank you for having me as your Commodore for the last two years, for believing that I could do it, and for supporting me in the role. I won’t name individuals here for fear of miss-ing some key person out but there is a group of people who actually run the club and it wouldn’t be possible to achieve anything as Commodore without them. And finally, if I was asked “What’s it like to be Commodore?”, I’d have to say, 50% fun and 50% terrifying - just like sailing!

Forthcoming Social Events

To start off the new season, Jason is arranging a Curry Evening, on the night of Boats Out, Saturday the 14th March, 7pm at the Bengal Spice, Dun-ford Road, Holmfirth, HD9 2DP. Please let him know if you will be attending asap, so he can get an idea of numbers. Email: [email protected] or telephone him on 0780 3299 451 This year’s Prizegiving Evening will be held on Saturday 28th March from 7.30pm. The format will be a faith supper at the clubhouse. For those of you new to the club, this involves bringing along a dish to put out for the buffet. It can be something you buy or better still, something of your own making, either snacks, mains or dessert. A list of suggestions will be sent out closer to the day.

Another date for the diary is our Open Day on Friday 8th May (Bank Holi-day). Building on last year’s success, we will again be doing our pop up cof-fee shop, with a range of home made cakes. Come along and support the club and don’t forget to bring along a friend for a quick sail.

For anyone who enjoyed Harry’s band at the Christmas party, they regu-larly perform on the last Thursday of the month at the Box Office Bar in the Holmfirth Picturedrome. They will also be performing at the Holmfirth Folk festival on 9/10th May. To tempt you along, they serve their own Ale, a very nice Blonde at £3.30 a pint.

And finally we will, of course, be serving bacon sandwiches at Boats Out, on Saturday 14th March.

Jason Milburn, Membership & Social Secretary

Promoting our Club in 2020 Our Open day for 2020 will be held on the bank holiday, Friday 8th May, 11am until 3pm. Our aim is to encourage visitors, particularly from our neighbours in the Hade Edge community, to come and see what we do. Preparations are underway with our event already advertised on the RYA website “Discover Sailing” page: (https://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/discover-sailing/Pages/Hub.aspx)

Promotional material, sponsored by the RYA, is on order. If last year is any-thing to go by we will need a small army of helpers, from helms to washers-up to cake bakers, so please save the date and come along to support this event if you can. We will be attending the Honley Show as an exhibitor in the Countryside Area on Saturday 13th June. If anyone would like to join me on the stand please get in touch – it’s a great opportunity to raise our profile locally and to visit the show if you haven’t been before. See https://honleyshow.co.uk/ for more information about the show itself. If you can help with, or would like more information about either or both of these events please contact me directly by email: [email protected].

Winter Sailing Huddersfield Sailing Club shuts down over the winter months but some local clubs continue with a Frostbite series during January and February. Scammonden Sailing Club throws its Frostbite series open to other clubs and three intrepid HSC members have been taking part for the last three years. The format is mixed handicap racing and this year Innes is competing in his Laser while Paul, and Jacki are taking part in the RS400. Your correspondent did stand in as crew for Paul one cold afternoon but the demotivating ef-fects of a full immersion means this is unlikely to be repeated. Allan Brooks

Working Party Sunday 22nd March

9.30 am Start A working party has been arranged for the weekend after Boats Out to pre-pare the club for the coming season and in particualr to ensure the club-house is ready for the Prizegiving evening on the 28th March. The work will involve general cleaning amd painting inside the building whilst outside the racing marks will need to be cleaned, refurbished and put back in position on the water. Please come along and do your bit to help.

HSC – some information for for new Members Welcome to the new season in what will be the club’s sixty second year of sailing. For those of you who have not previously been subjected to my short talk at the boats-out event, here is what I hope will be a mildly interesting bit of commentary about HSC, its background and what it means to be a mem-ber of this great family club.

Club Management

The club was formed by a band of keen sailors in 1958, bringing boats across a field and getting changed behind a wall. That initial spirit has continued over the years and expanded to create the buildings and dinghy park that we have today.

The objective of Huddersfield Sailing Club has always been to encourage the sport of sailing. We are very much a members’ community, operating on a not for profit basis and all our officials are volunteer club members. The club is managed in accordance with its Constitution. This requires us to have a General Committee to oversee the running of the club and a Sailing Committee to organise and facilitate the sailing programme. The Commit-tees are responsible for the Club Rules and the Sailing Instructions which set out how we manage racing (and not as they may sound to be; instructions on how or when to sail!)

If you would like to help out as a member of either Committee then you are most welcome, just speak to Paul O’Connor or Roger Stephenson. You do not need to be expert at sailing to contribute and we especially welcome the views of our newer members.

The Reservoir and Land

The reservoir belongs to Yorkshire Water and we are their tenants for which we pay an annual rent of around £1,400. We also rent the grassed area at the front of the clubhouse. The founder members had the foresight to buy the land on which the clubhouse, dinghy park and car park sit. This is unusual for a sailing club and helps significantly to keeping our annual costs down.

We share the water with Huddersfield Angling Club. We get on well with the fishermen and whilst sailing, try to avoid getting too close to them (whenever we are actually in control). The Angling Club share the use of the car park for which they make a small contribution towards maintenance.

Safety

Generally speaking sailing is a very safe sport and with a few precautions and a good understanding of the wind direction and sail setting, the worst that should happen is that you get to practise your swimming technique.

Each member must take responsibility for their own safety and take indi-vidual responsibility for decisions of whether to sail or not. This includes as-sessing your own and your chosen boat capabilities for the weather condi-tions. The safety and guidance of children is always the responsibility of a

Page 7: issue 2020 1 - hschuddersfieldsailing.org.uk/newsletter.pdf · has become an invaluable helper with new members. There have been other changes. Roger Stephenson is your new Vice Commodore

Page 7 HSC News 01/20

parent or guardian and if in any doubt please err on the side of safety. Ade-quate personal buoyancy must be worn at all times whilst on the water. It is good practice for children to wear a buoyancy aid at all times when near the water. Alongside the walkways the water can be up to two metres deep. The concrete ramp and jetties can be slippery when damp.

All boats that are brought to the club must have adequate insurance in-cluding a minimum of five million pounds third party cover. This sounds a lot but is not overly expensive. The average annual insurance cost for a sail-ing dinghy is just under one hundred pounds. All boats must be tested or in-spected to ensure they have sufficient reserve buoyancy. This should be car-ried out at the beginning of every year or when a boat is first brought to the club. The procedure for the test is determined by the Sailing Committee and can be found in a blue folder in the kitchen. A copy of the Buoyancy test form for 2020 is attached to this newsletter.

It is not the practice of the club to provide a powered patrol boat to assist if you get into trouble on the water. Our water is quite small with banks that are suitable for landing most of the way round. If you do get into difficulty it is usual for other sailors to come to your aid. If you wish to go sailing when there are no other boats on the water you must ensure that someone is on-shore to raise the alarm should it be needed. However the club does now own a patrol boat which will be used at the discretion of the Sailing Commit-tee at certain training and/or competitive events.

Being a Member

As a Member there is no obligation on you to do anything other than to en-courage participation in sailing. As members we have all signed up to that. However we will always appreciate your attendance and help at social events and working parties to help maintain the club and keep costs down. If you have a particular trade or skill that you think is helpful to the club please let anyone on the Committee now.

Keep reading these newsletters to stay informed of the latest news and up-coming events and download the sailing programme so that you know what is happening at the club on any one day throughout the season. If you would like to encourage friends or family to join in you may bring visitors to the club to sail. Please enter their names and addresses in the visitors book on the wall in the club lounge. A little known fact is that some years ago the cast of Last of the Summer Wine visited us and you will see their names in there too. Friends and family are always welcome to join in social events.

Partner organisations.

The governing body of sailing is the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). We pay an affiliation fee to them every year and if you would like to support their work the club encourages you to join as an individual member.

Some years ago a long-standing member of the club founded the Sail Training Trust, a charity to support young people from Yorkshire wanting to participate in sailing activities. Each year we hold an event to support the charity and if you know of a young person in need of financial assistance to

undertake a sailing activity then please speak to a member of the Committee who will put you in touch with the charity. We have also always been sup-porters of the RNLI and each year we hold a fund raising event for them.

I wish you all an enjoyable and successful sailing season and if you have any questions about the running of the club or its history don’t hesitate to come and speak to me or any of the other long-standing members at the club.

Boats Out Saturday 14th March 9.30 am Boats Out this year is on Saturday 14th March, so please make a note of this important date. If you cannot possibly make the date please ask someone to act on your behalf. With over fifty boats to move a prompt start is essential. Not until all boats and stands have been removed from the clubhouse should members start rigging their own boats.

Hopefully by the time you read this the winter weather will have allowed us to tidy up the dinghy park. If your boat has been left outside over the win-ter, but moved to a more sheltered berth, please move it back to the position were using last year. However if your boat is ‘for sale’, or you know that it is unlikely to be used this season please get in touch with me so that your berth can be reallocated to someone else.

There are lots of other jobs to do, both inside and outside, before sailing can begin. Please look out for emails advising of working parties.

Buoyancy Testing begins on Sunday 15th March, but can be done at any time throughout the season. Please note that ALL boats must complete a buoyancy test/inspection before they are sailed each season. The insurance declaration, which must be signed by an adult, confirms that the boat is in-sured with third party cover to the value of £5M. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule, which is for the protection and safety of all concerned. Please ask a member of the Committee if you are unfamiliar with the procedure for your class of boat. A buoyancy test form is attached to this newsletter. As is traditional, bacon sandwiches will be available immediately after the clubhouse has been emptied.

Safety on the Water With the exception of Open events and novice/junior training, all sailing and racing at Huddersfield Sailing Club occurs without the use of patrol boats. The club rules emphasise that a boat (i.e. its crew) is entirely responsible for its own safety, that the decision to race or sail is the responsibility of the boat and that children remain the responsibility of their parents (or appropriate adult) at all times. Safety on the water then remains primarily a matter for the individual. However the club also has a culture of mutual assistance while sailing. In practice this assistance routinely in-cludes:

• From other boats on the water – helping to right a capsized boat, taking crew off a capsized boat and assisting crew back on board their own boat.

• From other members on the shore – relaunching a boat from a lee shore or recovering such a boat onto its launching trolley.

Our formal procedures for rendering assistance are as follows: • The crew of a boat in difficulty should hail for assistance or when possible

signal by raising both arms above the head. Experienced sailors should abandon racing to assist.

• If in any doubt as to an individual’s safety the Race Officer should formally signal the abandonment of racing by making one long sound signal. All boats on the water should render such assistance as they can.

• Note if there is any risk of entrapment under a capsized boat, the first prior-ity is to prevent inversion of the boat by climbing onto the centreboard.

Novice sailors should consider gaining experience as follows: • By initially sailing on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the racing

programme. This ensures that there are a number of other boats on the wa-ter. Do not worry about getting in the way. Attempt to follow the course yourself.

• Become familiar with the handling characteristics of your boat. • All sailing dinghies capsize at some point. Practice capsize recovery in calm

conditions. Establish if your boat would benefit from righting lines or rope loops to aid climbing back in.

• Always stay with the boat. Do not attempt to swim to shore. • Seek advice from experienced members if you are unsure about the wind

conditions. • Wear appropriate clothing for the weather condition. • Check your boats fittings and equipment are in good order

Note that where a trapeze harness is used it should either be of the hookless type or be fitted with a quick release mechanism. Swimming is only permitted in an emergency or as part of a training exercise.

For convenience a membership form is attached for anyone who has not yet rejoined. (But you’ve only got a few days left before the early payment
