HEADITORIAL
Dear Parents and
Students,
Yesterday was World
Book Day. We had a
special assembly where
we were delighted to
welcome Ros Barber who
read an extract from her
fascinating verse novel,
The Marlowe Papers, and
all the girls received their
£1 World Book Day
tokens. Interestingly,
yesterday also saw the
publication by Dundee
University of a study that
found that teenagers are
selecting "easier reads" in
their book choices, rather
than more challenging
classics.
The study of reading
habits of 300,000 pupils in
1,600 UK schools found
many 13- and 14-year-
olds opting for books with
a primary school reading
age. The report claimed
that the average
reading age of the books
chosen by 13 and 14-
year-olds was only 10
years and that both high
ability and struggling
readers tend to read
books that do not
challenge them enough.
The report authors argue
that without guidance
from teachers and
librarians there seems to
be a "slump" in the
reading levels of books
chosen by teenagers,
who appear disinclined

Bronze Award
Expedition
Training -
50 girls from
Year 10 spent all day Sunday in
school training for their
forthcoming Bronze Award
expeditions. Workshops
included first aid, food and
cooking, rucksack packing and
equipment and perhaps most
crucially of all navigation and
map-reading. The Vicarage
Lawn became a hive of activity
as girls tackled tent pitching.
Thanks go to Bob Rhodes and
his team of DofE volunteers and
also to Mrs Thomas and Ms
Tyson for generously giving up
their time. At the end of next
week girls will put their newly
acquired skills to the test in the
navigation walk at Devils Dyke.

Mia Battle Welch won the
springboard drama
championships for the third
year running, Mia had to do a
piece from Shakespeare, Mia
performed Joan of Arch, a
poem from D H Laurence, and
did a sight reading from Great
Expectations. Mia also won her
class of prepared prose
reading from “The Hunger
Games”.

forward seeing you on Tuesday
12th March at 7pm.
Year 7 and 8 Tea Party
The Year 7 and 8 girls invited
their primary school teachers to
a tea party at Brighton and
Hove High School on
Wednesday. They had a
delicious tea in our canteen
and then the girls took their
visitors on a tour of the school. It
was lovely to see so many
happy, smiling faces. The
teachers were delighted to see
their ex-students in their new
environment and the girls were
happy to be reunited with
them. Thank you to all the staff
and girls who attended, it was
a jolly occasion.
Mrs C. Schilt, Head of Drama
Pupils’ linguistic skills were put to the test in the Foreign
Languages Spelling Bee Final hosted by Howell’s School in Cardiff
on Tuesday 5th March.
Year 8 and Year 9 pupils went head-to-head with girls from 17
other GDST schools from across the country, to prove their
language skills. They were tested on the spelling and
pronunciation of 140 words in rounds in five different languages -
French, German, Spanish, Latin and Mandarin. The final followed
four semi-finals which took place across the country last month,
involving 21 schools and over 370 pupils.
The competition was one of a series of activities to mark the
GDST’s 140th Anniversary which is being celebrated this year. It
was designed to focus students’ attention on the importance of
learning foreign languages as well as being a fun way to
encourage students in Years 8 and 9 to actively improve their
vocabulary, spelling and memory skills. Gemma Bovill, Lucy
Ritchie and Katja Ward (year 9) have been practising non stop
for the last few months and took part in the final with a lot of
enthusiasm and passion. After travelling to Wales on Monday
and spending a night in Boughrood they made us proud
reaching second place (after a very close nail biting tie break…)
We were made very welcome at Howells and were entertained
in a very warm Welsh tradition with music, songs and poetry. A
wonderful day to remember! Mrs G. Burnet-Smith

to try more complicated
works. They also warn
that by not engaging
with more sophisticated
books they fail to
engage with bigger and
more complex ideas:
"They're not only not
reading at a higher level;
they're not thinking at a
higher level."
If you would like your
daughter to broaden the
range of her reading,
encourage her to talk to
her English teacher or
have a look at the extra-
curricular clubs we run at

Year 10 Drama Evening
Last Thursday the Year 10
Drama GCSE group performed
their improvised exam pieces in
the Drama studio.
They were devised around the
theme of power and used
Pinter’s plays and status games
as their stimulus.
They performed to an
exceptionally high standard
and impressed their audience
with their variety of ideas. They
included sinister plot lines such
as the family who were
affected by a wish to bring evil
to the family in the form of an
abstract masked figure and the
ghost story of the girl who died
in a school fire.
There were also elements of
comedy in the drunken
grandfather who ruined
Christmas by sitting on
‘Sprinkles’ the cat!
They certainly took their
audience on a roller coaster of
emotions!

The Mary Schofield
House short story
competition
We were, once again, stunned
by the talent on show when the
Heads of House read the
entries for this term’s House
Short Story competition.
Heads of House had the tricky
job of selecting the shortlist but
we were able to pass on the
trickier task of picking the
winners to Ros Barber.
Ros is a nationally acclaimed
poet and experienced creative
writing teacher. She runs
workshops entitled: ‘How to Be
the Writer You Dream of Being’.
Her verse novel, ‘The Marlowe
Papers’, has just come out in
paperback and is a witty,
powerful re-imagination of
Christopher Marlowe’s life: no,
he didn’t die in that duel in
Deptford; yes, he lived on in
disguise and wrote the plays of
Shakespeare.
Ros is due to debate the
provocative and contentious
Shakespeare authorship
question in the Stratford Festival
with Professor Stanley Wells! The
novel itself is extremely clever
and enormous fun....as Ros
herself proved to be in the
inspiring workshop on
Marlowe’s ‘Dr Faustus’ which
she ran for our U6 English
Literature A Level students.

BHHS Community Choir and Orchestra Concert Many thanks to the girls, staff and parents involved in last night’s Choral Concert. The evening was full of stunning performances from all choirs. The Community Choir is now a regular fixture in the school calendar and hopefully we will see even more staff and parents participating next year. The School Orchestra will be rehearsing as normal on Tuesday as the instrumental concert on May 9th is very early in the Summer Term.

Dance
A massive congratulations to Eleanor Palmer, Lizzie Smith, Erin Tanyar and Ray Adams
Row Farr who all successfully auditioned for The Place Centre for Advanced Training
Satellite Programme last week. The girls were spotted through their performances at
Momentum by the Dance development officer at South East Dance. In addition to
this, Zoe Cartlidge and Olivia Fallon have also successfully auditioned for a place in
the Brighton and Hove Youth Dance Company and spent half term working with Tony
Thatcher (the programme leader for MA choreography at Trinity Laban) creating a
piece which was then performed up at Laban as part of the CoLab project. Well
done girls! A very proud Miss James, Head of Dance
Cross Country
The senior school Cross Country teams have had a busy week. Last Thursday they competed in the Sussex Schools Year 7 and 8 County
championships at Christs Hospital, Horsham.
In the Year 7 race where there were about 120 runners, Almi Nerurkar ran very strongly to win and become County Schools Year 7
champion. Her team mates who ran very well were Alex Lange-Andrews, Abi Roach Penn and Phoebe Munro.
In the Year 8 race Josie Grumitt had a strong run to finish in 8th place and she was 'followed home' by Carmen Adjare, Miriam Ritterband
and Mia Roach Penn.
As a result of these races, Almi and Josie have both been selected to run for Sussex Schools in an Inter- Counties match in Essex on March
23rd.
The first Inter-house Cross Country event was held at Hove Rec on Monday and the senior team event was won by Lyttelton. Individual
placings were: 1st Almi Nerurkar, 2nd Josie Grumitt and 3rd Eve Hull.
Finally on Wednesday 6th the Year 7 and 8/9 teams competed in the Trust Championships at Lloyd Park, Croydon. Almi Nerurkar finished
2nd in the year 7 event and Ella Witt came 12th in the year 8/9 event. They were ably supported by Alex Lange-Andrews, Abi Roach Penn,
Phoebe Munro, Eve Hull, Carmen Adjare, Elena Cooke, Mia Roach Penn and Josie Grumitt. Well done to all the runners.

JUNIOR EDITORIAL
Dear Parents,
What a wonderful week
this has been. The
activities this week have
really inspired the girls
and this culminated in a
memorable suffragette
march around the
school. I was particularly
struck by the way the
year 5&6 girls truly
engaged in the role play
and their passion and
enthusiasm. World Book
Day also prompted some
wonderful outfits and
activities. We hope that
our art installation based
on the butterfly theme
(inspirational women) will
be on display above the
entrance to the hall early
next week for us all to
enjoy and remember a
truly memorable week.
Best Wishes

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT
As part of the city’s Fairtrade
Fortnight celebrations Henry
Matenda, a sugar producer
from Malawi, visited the Jubilee
Library on Saturday. He gave a
fascinating talk about his work
and described many of the
benefits that the Fairtrade
premium that he and the other
483 small farmers in his Co- op
receive provides. He spoke
about bore holes which have
brought fresh water to the
village, and how electricity now
makes it possible for everyone
to use computers and watch
television, and to connect with
the wider world. Henry also
described how The Fairtrade
premium has enabled a school
to be built in the village, which
now provides an education
and life opportunities to its
children.
After his talk Henry spent some
time looking at the exhibition of
artwork that Year six have
mounted. He was very
impressed and he asked Mrs
Hadfield to send a message to
the girls. He said that this was
the first time he had ever left
Malawi, and he had learnt
many new things, but the thing
that had touched him most
was learning how Fairtrade is
promoted not by advertising
but by word of mouth. He had
never expected to find out that
schoolchildren like our Year Six
girls would be involved in
spreading the word about how
choosing Fairtrade products for
our weekly shopping can
change lives. For this he sent
them very warm and heartfelt
thanks and an assurance that
their work meant a great deal
to him. He took a set of their
lovely posters to put up in his
village shop in Malawi.
WORLD BOOK DAY
Yesterday BHHS Juniors
celebrated ‘World Book Day’,
as usual there was a wide
range of interesting and varied
costumes which we admired in
a parade in assembly- thank
you for all the hard work in
putting these together!
To keep within our ‘Women’s
Week’ theme each year group
focused on a different
inspirational female writer,
which included: Julia
Donaldson, Shirley Hughes,
Beatrix Potter, Grace Nichols,
Anne Fine, Carol Ann Duffy and
Christina Rossetti. Girls learnt a
little about the history of the
writer and their achievements
then explored some of their
poems and stories. Jo Rees
and Sasha Dugdale joined us
for the morning, running writing
workshops for some of the Key
Stage Two classes. We would
like to give them a heartfelt
thank you for their continued
dedication to the school.
All girls have been given a
book token which they can
redeem at most children’s book
stockists. We hope that
yesterday has continued to
inspire the girls to read and
explore different authors and
poets!
Yr1 GET ON THEIR BIKES!
On Friday the girls in Year 1
brought their bicycles to school
as part of our “On the Move”
topic. They learned about the
environmental and health
benefits of cycling while having
lots of fun! The girls donned
their helmets and cycled
around easy and more
challenging circuits, and found
out about the different parts of
a bicycle.
The fun continued on Monday
when Scout’s mum, Kirsty, told
Year 1 all about her job as a
train guard. The girls were
fascinated and have been
chatting about it ever since!
Many thanks to Y1 parents for
bringing in all the bikes and to
Kirsty for her inspirational talk.
MEDICATIONS
Just to remind parents that if
their child brings any form of
medication into school, this
includes lip balms and lotions,
please provide a letter giving
the school the authority to
administer the medication.

On Wednesday the school was taken over by our Year 5 and Year 6
suffragettes!
During the week Year 5 and Year 6 have been learning about
the women’s rights movement and many have been captured
by tales of courage and determination. The topic has inspired
pupils and teachers alike and has been part of our Women’s
Week. Pupils were particularly interested to find out about the
many links to the suffragettes and the GDST! The sister suffragettes
spent the morning preparing banners, sashes, chants, speeches,
posters and decorative hats. It was a fantastic team effort which
was embraced by all, the morning felt very purposeful and
industrious – several girls commented that they couldn’t wait to
re-enact the famous suffragette slogan of ‘deeds not words’.
The march was a great success, as the sister suffragettes stormed
through corridors and classrooms urging other pupils to listen to
their cause and stand up for their rights! The girls were unfazed by
the film crews and photographers as they seemed completely
immersed in their new roles. Miss Berlin said ‘I am delighted that
the girls have taken this project on with such passion and have
enjoyed the day so much. I hope it has been a memorable
learning experience, which will inspire them further’.

U9 NETBALL TOURNAMENT A huge congratulations to the U9 Netball teams who played in the tournament that we hosted for the first time on Saturday. Both teams
really did the school proud. The ‘B’ team who were playing in an ‘A’ team standard tournament played some of their best Netball and
held their opposing teams to some very respectable score lines. The ‘A’ team played their socks off throughout the tournament, they were
unbeaten throughout the group stages and secured some very convincing wins throughout the morning, including; LOGS – 5-1, Farlington –
5-3, Burgess Hill – 9-0 and St. Bedes – 6-0. The team went on to win their semi-final and gain a place in the final. Again the team put on a
fantastic team performance and at half time were 3-2 up. In the second half of the game the team conceded a couple more goals and
narrowly missed out on the shield, but achieved a very respectable runners up position in their first ever tournament! A big thank you to all
the staff and parents who came to support the event.
KS2&3 CROSS COUNTRY EVENT Well done to all the girls who participated in our first of many inter-house cross country event on Monday. We

their positions and scored towards the overall house results, which were as follows:
KS2: 4th Grey, 3rd Gurney, 2nd Lyttleton, 1st Stanley
KS3: 4th Stanley, 3rd Gurney, 2nd Grey, 1st Lyttleton

Nursery Newsletter
It is Grandparents’ Afternoon on Friday the 22nd March. Even though Friday afternoon
may not be the normal day for your daughter to attend Nursery, she is very welcome to
come and join us in the Nursery after lunch and show her grandparents around the
Nursery and school. Please see me if you decide to do this and I can give you more
details. It is important we know the numbers in advance so that we don’t run out of cake
and tea for the adults!
A few weeks ago the girls decided they would like to create
their own marching band. So they chose their instruments and
marched in time to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” complete with vocals. After a few
marches around the Nursery garden, they moved on to parade around the main
playground. Rousing stuff for the whole of Radinden Manor residents!
Spring was in the air this week and we certainly made the most of the good weather.
We have now put up our ‘kindness tree’ on the wall in the Nursery (many thanks to Miss Page
for making the tree). When a child is being especially kind or helpful, we make a note of it on
a laminated leaf with the child’s name and it is placed on the tree to celebrate.
Do you have a hobby or skill you could share with the children? Or maybe you could tell them about your
job. Please come and talk to me if you would like to do this.
