Burnie Brae member, pat Herriott, is a very happy woman after being miraculously reconciled with Cody, her 11 years old terrior cross therapy dog.
Cody was missing for twelve days and pat had given up hope of ever seeing him again, when he was discovered in a very weak but surprisingly good condition trapped in a drain. The brave little dog has put his ordeal behind him and is now his old self. He has even risen to celebrity status with his photo and story being told in a local paper. I think everyone would agree Cody is a very lucky little dog.
Cody is back alive and well

Many Burnie Brae members have been involved in research projects run by us here at the centre or externally by various universities. You may have asked yourself, “why does Burnie Brae get involved in research and why are they sending me these invitations to participate?” The answer to these questions might surprise you.
A lot of what we do and what we believe in our day-to-day lives is based on common sense; based on what we ourselves have experienced in the past or on the experiences of other people in our circle of friends and family. This is called anecdotal evidence. However, using anecdotal evidence to select a course of action may not be the best approach to use, especially when it comes to your health care. for example, you would expect your doctor to use a more reliable form of evidence when prescribing medications than his own observations such as, “Well, it worked for fred when I gave it to him last week”.
This other type of evidence is called empirical evidence. Empirical evidence is based on the experiences of many people (the research participants). By combining the results of many people’s experience with the intervention (be that a medication, type of exercise, food choice or elective surgery) the chances that the results will apply to the population as a whole are increased. In addition, these interventions are carried out in controlled conditions with close monitoring of participants’ health and wellbeing. This is called the scientific method. Using the scientific method of enquiry means that results can be checked by other researchers and that the effects can be generalized to the wider population.Applying the scientific method and producing empirical evidence relies on the involvement and goodwill of research participants. In the past three years the generous participation of Burnie Brae members has contributed to research that
will improve the health and wellbeing of older people across Australia and around the world. Some examples of these projects:
Muscling Up Against Disability (Burnie Brae / University of Queensland / Bond University) – how does a 24-week progressive resistance training regime affect a person’s strength, balance and quality of life?
Active@Home (Burnie Brae / Brisbane north pHn) – how does a personal care worker-led exercise program affect the health and wellbeing of care recipients?
RESCUE: REduce Sitting to improve Cognitive fUnction in Elders (University of Queensland) – how does a program to encourage people to sit less affect their brain health and functioning?
Insoles for parkinson’s (Queensland University of Technology) – does wearing textured insoles increase stability and reduce falls for people with parkinson’s disease?
older renters, home and health (University of Queensland) - understanding the experiences of older people renting and how their home environment impacts on their health and independence.
Motor imagery (Australian Catholic University) - can thinking about movement improve movement speed in older adults?
So a big thank you to all the members who have helped contribute to our knowledge of ageing well and living well. We look forward to working with members again in these exciting research activities.
