In-Term Swimming Lessons
Our photo shows the Year 2 and 3/4 classes on their way to the pool last week.
Over the fortnight of swimming lessons students have experienced a mixed bag
of weather conditions ranging from jaw chattering coldness to sweltering heat
with a flood and some tropical humidity thrown in for an extra degree of
difficulty. Well done students, staff and parent helpers.
Cass Harris-Moroney
From the Principal CLASSROOM MEETINGS
Thank you to everyone who has attended the information sessions primary teachers have offered during this
term. Your continued support and positive relationships with your child’s teachers is a major factor in their
success at school.
OVAL
Our school oval attracts much feedback. Please be assured that we are working closely with the Department
of Education to improve the quality of our school oval; this has been an ongoing process for several years.
Currently we are investigating harvesting more rain water from our existing buildings. We have already
reduced the amount of reticulation, had an extensive water report carried out, investigated alternative water
sources within Wagin and worked closely with the Shire. We will continue to do everything we can to
improve our school oval. If you have any questions or queries about it please do not hesitate to come and
talk to me at school about them.
THANK YOU
I would like to extend a very big thank you to our Wagin Shire for their support and frequent updates when
the weather front affected our town on Friday, February 10. In particular Brian Roderick for ensuring we
knew exactly how our students and families may have been affected. We also appreciate the updates Peter
Webster and Alan Hicks continue to give regarding road safety.
I would also like to thank all families for your tremendous support on the day and for working with us to
ensure your children’s safety was always the priority. Very often events like this give us the opportunity to
show how well we can all work together, as a community I think we excelled.
UPDATING YOUR CONTACT DETAILS
Please ensure school has your current phone and/or mobile number, address and emergency contact details.
As the flood proved this information is vital and saves a lot of time and stress. If you have any changes
please contact the office on 9861 1877 or come in an update your details.
SWIMMING
We managed to complete in-term swimming, despite the not so great weather. Students will have the
opportunity to put their new skills to the test at the carnival on Friday.
Thank you to the parents and carers who have assisted with walking students to and from the pool, we
greatly appreciate your time. Also extra thanks to our wonderful swimming instructors and Jen at the pool
for ensuring our students could participate.
OH THE PLACES THEY GO
We are very proud of our former students Brittany Bolt, Hayley Boxall and Dana Stephens who have gained
university entry into their first choice. Brittany has gained entry to Murdoch to complete an Animal Science
degree, Hayley has gained entry into UWA to complete Environmental Science and Dana has gained entry
to Curtin to complete a uni preparation course and will continue on to study Education. Hayley has also won
the traineeship position at Darkan CRC and will postpone her university course until next year.
Lucilee Illes has won the dental technician position at Wagin Dental, Aaron Horne is helping to run the
family farm and Thomas Parker, Saige Edwards and Zoe Wright are concentrating on working for this year.
We are very proud of all of our former students and wish them the very best of luck for the future.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
This year we had many students aiming high and striving to be part of our student leadership team. Being a
student councillor or a faction captain is a sought after role amongst our student group. This year saw a
record number of applicants delivering some of the best speeches we have heard. Our student leaders are
expected to uphold our school vision and model our motto of Aim High. Throughout the year the 19
students elected to be part of the leadership group will organise fund raising events, mentor students,
represent Wagin District High School in the community and assist staff. Ms Pense and Mrs Pilkington will
take our 2017 student leaders on a three day camp to Kulin to begin their leadership journey. I look forward
to working with our student leaders throughout the year.

Jolene Abbott
An important goal of Wagin District High School is to provide an empowering environment for
life-long learning. We encourage inclusiveness by supporting students to take the lead and partici-
pate in a variety of leadership opportunities. Giving students a voice promotes responsibility,
educational engagement and preparedness to meaningfully participate in society. Supporting
students to be active participants in their schooling plays a vital role in improving their social
awareness and establishing a skill set that will be highly valued in the 21st Century. The formal
student leadership structure involves nominating to serve as Student Councillors, Faction
Captains and Vice Captains. Commendations must be given to all students who participated in the
nomination and public speaking opportunity so sensibly and maturely. Congratulations to the
elected 2017 Student Councillors. These students will be attending the leadership camp from
Wednesday, March 1 to Friday, March 3 at Camp Kulin.
Black Dog Institute of Youth Mental Health There will be a seminar for year 7-10’s Thursday February 23 from the Black Dog Institute of
Youth Mental Health. The seminar will be a 30 minute youth presentation, Talking about Mental
Illness – a young person’s insights. CBH sponsors the Black Dog Institute which then allows the
presentations to be conducted in the Great Southern Region. The sessions are designed to improve
mental health understanding, enhance wellbeing and reduce the incidence and impact of mental
health issues.
Swimming Carnival The Faction swimming carnival will be held this Friday at the Wagin Pool. Thank you to all the
parents who have volunteered their time to support our school event.
Want to know about the OLNA? Some students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are about to sit the OLNA. You may have heard about it,
but are not sure what it means for your child.
OLNA stands for the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment. In order to demonstrate the
required literacy and numeracy standards for the Western Australian Certificate of Education
(WACE), some students are expected to sit this assessment. The School Curriculum and
Standards Authority (Authority) awards the WACE at the end of Year 12 to students who have
met all the requirements. You can find more about the requirements on the Authority website at
www.scsa.wa.edu.au.
Some students prequalify for the literacy and numeracy requirement through their performance in
the Year 9 NAPLAN test. We will inform you and your child whether they need to sit the OLNA,
which is held in March and September each year, starting in Year 10. This means students will
have up to six opportunities before the end of Year 12 to meet the requirement.
The OLNA has three components - reading, writing and numeracy. The reading and numeracy
components comprise 45 multiple choice questions; the writing component is an extended
response of up to 600 words. Students are allowed 50 minutes for the reading and numeracy
components and 60 minutes for the writing.
To prepare our students for the types of questions they can expect and to familiarise themselves
with the online assessment platform, we provide access to practice and example tests on a secure
website. In addition to providing access to practice tests, we offer a number of specific learning
opportunities for students to prepare for the tests.

Tax File Number Applications
A tax file number is a unique nine-digit number issued to individuals and organisations to help admin-
ister tax and other Australian Government systems.
The Australian Tax Office has changed the process for students applying for a Tax File Number (TFN).
Schools are no longer able to process TFN application forms.
The new process involves students completing an online application form and then visiting an Australia
Post Office outlet to have their identity verified.
To apply for a TFN students need to visit https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/tax-file-number/apply-for
-a-tfn/australian-residents---tfn-application/
After they have completed this form students will need to print their application summary and take this
together with proof of identity documents to an Australia Post outlet.
This must be done within 30 days of completing the online form.
Information on the type of Proof of Identity documents that can be used can be found at https://
smarteform.com.au/ato.sup.doc/tfn/external.sup.doc.html#identityDoc

Swimming
Our Interm Swimming finished on Friday after a fortnight of many challenges brought on by
inclement weather and a shortage of teachers.
Many thanks go to Robyn Webster and her team who were able to adjust to the changes that were
made due to the weather. The students all tried very hard and improved their swimming skills
despite the cold water. Thanks are also extended to our wonderful parents who assisted the class
teachers walking the students to and from the school and with dressing the students following
swimming.
Concerns
Please come in and see the class teacher, Cass or myself if you have any issues that you have
concerns about. Sometimes if we aren’t told we can be unaware of things that may be upsetting
your child. The sooner we know, the quicker the issues can be addressed and strategies put in place
to prevent reoccurrences. We use Restorative Justice in dealing with issues with the students.
Why it’s more important than ever to foster positive relationships in children and young
people
By Michael Grose
At a time when the way many prominent public figures treat others can leave a fair-minded person
shaking his or her head in dismay it’s worth remembering that through our own fair and tolerant
treatment of others we can positively impact how children and teenagers treat others.
Practical ways to promote respectful relationships at home:
1. Show your willingness to listen to kids and talk through their relationship problems.
2. Expect kids of all ages to use manners. Good manners are respect in action.
3. Talk about how good friends act and treat each other. Conversations about friendly behaviours
should also involve how their behaviours make others feel.
4. Differentiate between a friendship and a clique with young people. A clique is restrictive and can
make a young person feel bad, while a friendship group is inclusive and feels good.
5. Respectfully and tactfully question displays of intolerance and challenge bullying behaviour. Be
mindful that children and young people are learning how to behave civilly so they need guidance
and direction, which sometimes involves challenge.
