D ear Noda Members,
If I see my glass as half empty, the arrival of February means that there are still a lot of weeks of cold and cloudy weather to endure. If I see my glass as half full, the arrival of February means that it’s almost March when we can start to expect some warming and the continued extension of daylight hours. How is your glass looking about now? As I write this, with temperatures in the single digits, it could be a tossup, but I believe my glass is half full because I am eagerly looking forward to learning about the new USEF dressage tests at the USEF New Test Dressage Test Seminar on February 21st. This indoor event, at the Crown Plaza in Independence, is hosted by NODA and will be presented by USEF Senior Judge Margaret Freeman. I am hoping that everyone will find this an affordable and warm way to learn, and that our professionals will encourage their students to attend. What better way to get ready and pumped up about the 2015 show season? It will be here before we know it!
Several big changes are on tap for the new competition year, and everyone who shows in our schooling show series needs to be aware of them. Important eligibility requirements for NODA’s Schooling Show Championship and Year End awards have changed. The new season will require two qualifying scores from two different NODA shows. There is a change once again for Juniors and Young Riders (Jr/YRs), and we will welcome the Western Dressage Division to the Schooling Show Championship in 2015. These are only a few of the changes; an article in this issue of the NODA News outlines all the changes for 2015. Please read it carefully. The 2015 Schooling Show prize list, which will be out in early March, will contain all the rules and changes, as well. As a NODA member, you will receive a hard copy in the mail. But remember that, as always, the most current prize list and rules will always be on the NODA website. If you are interested in earning some NODA Bucks and want to work from home, Lora Burgess, our Historical Chair, needs someone to help with scanning NODA items for the historical archives data base. Please email Lora at [email protected]. We also want to remind our professionals that we now have a division for you in our Schooling Show Championships. 2014 was the first year for this new division and we saw a few pros take advantage of this opportunity, but not as many as we’d hoped. Because it was new, perhaps not all of our pros were aware of it. We also included professionals in the schooling show year-end awards. So

School Show 2015 Series Update By: NODA Schooling Show Manager, Kara Maruszak
H ello everyone! With the snow and cold finally ending, the horse show season will be here before we know it. The NODA
Schooling Show committee has been hard at work this winter to organize and improve the schooling show series and we are very excited to introduce several changes. First, the schooling show schedule has been posted on the NODA website and published in the NODA News. As many of you may have noticed, the June and August schooling shows will be offered at two new venues this year – Ridgewood Stables in Medina and South Farm in Middlefield. The June schooling show at Ridgewood is guaranteed to be a fun-filled weekend as, for the first time ever, NODA is partnering with CADS to offer a schooling show party weekend. CADS will be hosting a schooling show at Ridgewood on Saturday and NODA will host the schooling show on Sunday. Both shows are open to members and non-members. This is a great way to earn scores and qualify for Championships and Year-End Awards for both groups all in one weekend. Stabling is limited, so preference will be given to those who show both days. More news will be coming soon about this event, so stay tuned. We are also pleased to return South Farm to the schooling show lineup. South Farm is a beautiful facility with ample stabling, parking, and delicious concessions. We look forward to working with these two venues in the future. Second, competitors will now be able to pay their entry fees by credit cards. The bottom portion of the entry form will now include a section where competitors can include their credit card information and pay by credit card instead of cash or check. Additionally, in order to help cover the credit card transactional fee and the increasing price of office supplies, the office fee has increased by $2. Another major change to the Schooling Show Series will affect Juniors and Young Riders. They will now again compete together in the same classes that will be labeled as “Jr/YR”. In dressage, a rider may
compete in Junior-Young Rider classes until the beginning of the calendar year in which s/he turns 22. In 2015, this means that you may still show in junior-young rider classes if you were born in 1994 or later. If you were born anytime in 1993 (or earlier), you must declare yourself either an adult amateur or a professional. A professional is defined as an adult who accepted payment for equine training or teaching during the past 12 months. If you are unsure of your status, please contact Jennifer, the show secretary, at [email protected]. There will be future articles on this change in upcoming NODA News editions and an explanation can also be found in the 2015 Prize List, which can be accessed on the NODA website. There are also several very important changes to the Schooling Show Championship. Most importantly, in order to qualify for Championships, a horse/rider combination MUST receive two scores of 60% or better (or 58% or better for Second Level and Above), from two different judges at two different NODA Schooling Shows. A horse/rider can no longer qualify for the Championship by attending just one NODA Schooling Show. The next important change to the Schooling Show Championships pertains to the eligibility rules. Traditionally, once a horse/rider combination won a class at the Championships, they were no longer eligible to compete in that same class at a future Championship. Starting this year, past Championship winners may compete in that same class again at the Championship; however, they cannot win at the same level and division more than three times. We are also pleased to announce that Western Dressage classes will now be offered at the Schooling Show Championship. We have seen an increase in participation in these classes and are excited to expand the Championships. To qualify for the Championship in Western Dressage, a horse/rider combination must receive two scores of 60% or better from two different judges at two different NODA Schooling Shows. A Championship division will

be offered at each test level as an Open division. Finally, this year at the Championships, Novice Intro competitors will still ride Intro Test B. Open Intro competitors will now be required to ride Intro Test C. Last year, NODA awarded prizes to the Champion of each class. This was a huge hit and we plan to offer prizes again this year at the Championship. Competitors will also receive new, larger ribbons at every schooling show. As always, we love hearing input from our members and competitors. Many of the changes this year came directly from your recommendations. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. See you in May!

USDF Congratulates New L Program Graduates
Lexington, KY (January 14, 2015) - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that 44 USDF members successfully completed the USDF L Education Program in 2014. This program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) “r” Judges Training Program, to qualify individuals to judge schooling shows, and to give competitors, trainers, and instructors greater insight into the evaluative process of judging dressage. The program also serves to provide continuing education for licensed judges. The L Program is an excellent opportunity for all USDF members to learn how to improve their scores and improve their ability to view other rides from a judge’s perspective, whether or not they plan on becoming licensed judges themselves. USDF L Program faculty are all approved USEF Senior (“S”) dressage judges, who also have experience in teaching judge-training programs. USDF congratulates the following new graduates of the USDF L Education Program:
