On Monday 17t h of SeptemberPower Equipment broke newground in its pleasurecraftpowerboat engine marketingprogram with the “First Pair Of500’s” media release day. As thename suggests the day was toannounce the release to a handpicked group of the boating mediaof the new 6CX-GTE2 500 hp powerplants.

YANMAR 6CX-GTE2

By all accounts the new 6CX-GTE2,500hp power plants exceededexpectations. The boat got up out of thehole and onto the plane with ease andthen continued to impress. The enginesare an in-line 6 cylinder package with adisplacement of 7.413 litres. With Yanmar’s latest lightweight engineconstruction technology, this powerplant exhibits superb fuel efficiency, anoutstanding power to weight ratio, and

In the past releases of this naturehave been done at pressconferences or boat shows with anengine mounted on a cold steeldisplay stand, sometimes goingaround in circles!

Not this day, on this day the engineswere installed in a brand newBlackwatch 40, set up as a luxurygame boat.

The day started for many involvedwith a 4.30am start to be at thevarious airports for 6.00am flights. At that point some were wonderingwhat they were doing there! By9.00am everyone was watching theBlackwatch boys giving the boat thefinal “once-over” before beingwelcomed aboard. The plan was to take the boat upthe Tweed River from Blackwatch

From the Broadwater themedia guests were invited to takesome aerial shots from a locallychartered helicopter then head backdown the coast and back up theTweed River.

Blackwatch 40

The Black Watch 40 isarguably one of the finestgame fishing boats in theworld. Using only thebest materials anduncompromising buildingmethods, dedicatedcraftsmen have createda boat that outperforms, outlasts and is supremelycomfortable. The boathas the ability to drive intoan angry head sea atspeed and remain dryand comfortable. In afollowing sea thehandling is superb with

no tendency to broach or roll. Thevessels steering response is sure anddecisive. Blackwatch recognise thenecessity to give clients the very bestin internal comfort and fit out. In theBlack Watch 40 no expense is sparedto provide a finish and overall look thatany owner would be proud to showoff.

compact overall size. Theseengines proved to be extremelyresponsive in the Blackwatch 40,throughout the rev range as wellas having an impressiveacceleration that would please anykeen Game fishing boat skipper.

The increased horsepower in thisstraight 6 cylinder engine isobtained from a longer stroke, more aggressive turbo/intercoolerand tune settings. It also features4 valves per cylinder and an extrahigh pressure fuel injectionsystem.

The 6CX- GTE2 engines werenicely installed into the vessel bythe Team at Blackwatch leavingan abundance of room in theengine bay to do the regularmaintenance etc. Yanmar utilisesix engine mounts on each enginedue to the high torquecharacteristic’s of these purposebuilt marine engines.

Dimensions of only 905mm high and877mm wide, and with only 825kgof engine weight makes for a powerinstallation that is lightweight indeed.

With the smooth power and the flattorque characteristics and low fuelconsumption figures of this engineit will make an outstanding choicefor any fast boat. The engine is setto become the “world power plant”for the motor boat enthusiast.

ALL TRACKS LEAD TO YANMAR FOR APPSydney company Advanced Power hasdeveloped a sophisticated powersupply system for use in an isolatedarea of railway track with no access tomains power.

Railway lines often traverse someremote areas of regional Australia. However sections of track over 100kmfrom the heart of Sydney that are notsupported by the mains supply powergrid also present unique problems.

Vital signall ing equipment andcommunication systems between trainswhile en-route, are totally dependantupon a reliable supply of high qualitypower. The slightest glitch could havedire consequences.

Longtime Yanmar users, Sydneycompany Advanced Power, hasdeveloped a sophisticated and highlyrefined power supply system for use inthe lllawarra tunnel section of track, anisolated area that has no access tomains power. At the heart of the powersystem is a Yanmar diesel engine toprovide back up power when theprimary solar power system requires aboost.

Situated in a remote area, the powersupply unit is also located in a watercatchment zone placing great

emphasis on the environmentalintegrity of the power unit.

Central to the system designed byAdvanced Power are 16 solar

panels that provide the primarypower source for the batteries. Thebank of batteries are 3000 amphour 12 volt units. When they dropto 80% power output, the Yanmargenerator fires up.The Yanmar engine selected forthe task is a stock Yanmar3TNE68EG1 which is coupled to astandard 6Kva generator. The management system

developed by Graham Toynton, electronics engineer at AdvancedPower, is designed to cover allpossible situations for powerdemand, emergency shutdown and

maintenance.Given that access by conventionalfour wheel drive vehicle takes manyhours, the remoteness of the unitdictates that it must operate inisolat ion with minimal outsidesupport.A PLC (Programmable LogicController) evaluates the operationalenvironment with data fed to theengine controller and management

The concept of a diesel poweredperformance inboard ski boat hastraditionally been regarded as taboo. That was unti l a three partnerconsortium teamed up to supply adiesel powered ski boat for the Asiantourist market.

Skicraft Boats, Performance Marineand Yanmar marine diesel enginesjoined forces to produce a dieselpowered ski package that delivers bothtop performance and superb handling.A Skicraft Senator SST boat was

selected while Yanmar OEM PeterWebb of Performance Marineinstalled a Yanmar 4LHA-DTPengine.

Conceived as a viable alternativeto the traditional V8 Chev petrolinboard, the Yanmar diesel enginedelivers less power with muchgreater torque and as an outcomethe performance is virtually thesame.

The benefits of Yanmar dieselpower make the package attractiveto ski schools, holiday resorts andother activity based operations. These kind of organisationsnormally clock up big engine hours, and with a petrol engine on-board,the fuel bill can also be quite hefty.

Yanmar and Peter Webb combinedtheir knowledge base to come up witha highly efficient transmission andpropeller combination. The ultimateperformance figures were quiteastounding.

In spite of delivering some 90hp lessthan a common petrol V8 Chev, theSkicraft-Yanmar package achieved atop end speed of 67 km/h, just a fewpoints behind the classic Chev. And inthe acceleration stakes the Yanmar

took just two seconds longer to reachtop speed. However the Yanmarexcelled in four key areas. Bottom endraw grunt needed to pull skiers from adeep-water start was a tearaway winfor the Yanmar. The Yanmar excelledin the normal skiing speed band of 32km/h to 48 km/h. Likewise in turns the

torque of the Yanmar allows theSkicraft driver to maintain aconsistent tow speed withminimal additional throttle.

When it comes t ime to pullalongside the fuel pump, theYanmar keeps running long afterthe classic Chev V8 ran dry. Inhead to head testing over aweekend of normal social skiing, the Yanmar took on board exactlyhalf the fuel needed by the Chev/petrol powered boat.

"People once thought there wasno place in inboard ski boats fordiesels," said Darren Bird ofYanmar. "The Yanmar 4LHA-DTPis part of the Yanmar LH Seriesengine family with power ratingsranging from 160hp to 240hp.These purpose built marineengines deliver favourable powerto weight figures, plus miserly fuelconsumption. The Yanmardelivers economic benefits with

top flight performance."Performance Marine's Peter Webb& Power Equipment's Darren Bird

system. The PLC electronic brainmonitors 10 input factors, thenassess's the data to provide the bestoutput scenario. Any problemsdetected are flagged and instantlycommunicated to the offsite-monitoring unit maintained by NSWRailways.

“We have used Yanmar dieselengines before in other powergeneration applications,” said MrToynton. “We have found theYanmar engines to be ideal for ourneeds. “The Yanmar 3TNE68EG1was selected for a number ofimportant reasons. It will operate forlong duration between servicing, itis easy to service, access from onlyone side is needed for servicing, fuelconsumption is low and it is quiet inoperation.”

The self-contained power unit is wellset out for ease of manufacture, operation and servicing. The Yanmarengine sits on top a large capacity492 litre fuel tank. To the left of theengine is the management andcontrol system, with the entire uniteasily accessed via large openingdoors.

Peter Webster, long time marinejournalist and editor of the Nationalpublication Australian Fishermanand Boatowner, turned to MarcelMaujean, Cairns Custom Craft’schief designer, architect and onetime Frenchman, to develop thenext stage in the evolution of theirlong-range mothership project.Picking up where they’d left off withGenesis, their wish list included:

• A working range of 300 – 500miles

• A “proper” eutectic freezer system• Sufficient water for 10 days in the field• Still trailerable behind our Holden Suburban• Diesel powered (for economy and range)• Capable of lifting the load plus the fishing dory to mid-20 knots (at least) performance.

The upshot of this wish list is beforeyou on these pages. Marcel hascreated another variation of his verywell sorted 8.0m hull. More than 100of these hulls have been built overa 10-year period, each being slightlymore refined than the one before. The difference may only be slight, but over the years, a verysophisticated, superb handling crafthas emerged.

Marcel has retained a 24 degreedeadrise at the transom, makingthis an extremely deeply veed, softriding craft for it’s size. He can getaway with it in this case becausehe had 522kg of Yanmar diesel witha MerCruiser Bravo Two sterndrivesitting right on the transom, justahead of a half tonne load (500litres) of diesel and 200 litres(200kg) of water.

With tankage, this amounts tonearly three quarters of a tonne ofliquids right down in the bottom ofthe boat near the centre of gravity. The result is one of the bestbalanced boats the writer has everused – and it stays in balanceregardless of whether the tanks arefull or empty. This is because thewater tank is literally sitting on topof the diesel tank, so that as liquidsare used, the centre of gravityaround which the boat moves andworks, remains constant.

Furthermore, Marcel knew from theoutset that we intended to carry theStessl 3.4m dory (110kg + bits) overthe sterndrive when the boat waspassage making at sea. In addition,he knew it was going to have thedavit, 80 w solar panels, targa and

hardtop structure, so he was able tocalculate his weights with unusualprecision.Statistically, Dusty Rover has a hulllength of 8.0m, but is a shade under9.0m overall, counting the bowspritand extended stern platform. Thebeam is 2.75m, making it 0.25m widerthan is legal to trailer without flags, flashing lights and a bloody big towvehicle, but easy for the professionalsto transport around the coast.

The hull bottom is produced from 5mm plate alloy and utilises CairnsCustom Craft’s unique T-bar stringersystem running in a carefullyengineered grid over the full lengthof the hull. The topsides are 4mm,deck and cabin sides are 3mm platealloy. The hull shell weighed some1,300kg before we laid the etchprimer on it, and started carryingthings aboard.

It is important for readers to be awarethat this craft was designed, built andlaunched by Cairns Custom Craft inCairns, but was completely fitted outon the Gold Coast by ADM Marine in

Hope Harbour working under thedirect supervision of the writer andRuth Cunningham. To achieve thisstandard of finish requires a highdegree of personal involvement andsupervision of all the different tradesinvolved. This is a majorconsideration for potential buyerscontemplating such a craft. CairnsCustom Craft can take the boat to avery high degree of finish too – thatisn’t the issue..

Dusty Rover is superbly built andfitted-out to a very comfortablestandard – but it’s a very utilitarianstandard, nonetheless. This is aworking boat designed to go out intoremote regions where it will be usedas the mothership or base for the film/fishing crew working in and out of thespecial modified Stessl 3.4 dory.

Dusty is made to be hosed out asrequired, and more importantly, toprovide the wherewithal to keep twopeople fed, bathed, clothed andhealthy for 7 –10 days away fromcivilisation. It is a working fishing boatand technical platform, not a gin

palace.HANDLING At this stage it ’spremature to comment too muchabout the boat’s handling becausewe’ve scarcely driven it offshore, much less used it in give and takeconditions. That said, we mustobserve that we’re both absolutelydelighted with the feel and inshorehandling of the boat. Combined withsilky smooth helm (which has a verynice “feel”) and the power steeringfrom the MerCruiser drive leg, the rigis a pleasure to use.As it happens, both Ruth and I stilllike to drive the boat manually aroundthe Runaway Bay area becausewe’ve been playing with the boat andlearning how to drive it. We’re stillexperimenting with all the differenttrim combinations that are possiblebetween these power 18” wideBennett trim tabs and the nearly aspowerful MerCruiser sterndrive legtrim system.PERFORMANCE Well, how did theYanmar 300hp turbo dieselperform? That’s the questioneverybody wants to know, and it’swith some pleasure we’re able to

Dusty Rover

confirm that after a bit of shufflingin the propeller department, we’vebeen able to achieve our targetperformance.

Powered by the Yanmar 6LP-STZE221kW (300hp) turbo diesel engine,Dusty Rover has now cracked the 30knot barrier with full fuel, water anddory aboard – and we think that is aterrific achievement. Heaven knowswhat it does with very little fuel and nodory, but it must be in the order of 34– 35 knots. Technically, the Yanmaris a six cylinder, in line 4-stoke watercooled diesel engine with adisplacement of 4.163 l i tres. Itproduces 300hp at the crankshaft, features direct injection (no need forglow plugs) and is turbo charged withan intercooler. Fresh water-cooled, ithas a dry weight, (engine only) of428kg. Linked to the Bravo TwoMerCruiser sterndrive leg, the total(dry) weight is 522kg. These enginescontain many high performancefeatures that make them veryappealing when compared to (say)petrol engines or 2-stroke outboards. An overhead cam design based on the100 Series Toyota Landcruiser block,it develops its maximum horespowerat higher revs, allowing the use ofsmaller, smoother running propellers. The camshaft is belt driven, reducingweight, the number of parts, gearwhine and noise.

The Yanmar’s wastegated water-cooled turbo really makes thingshappen when the throttle is put downhard. Reducing embarrassing blacksmoke at these times, the 6LP seriesengines have boost compensated

distributor type fuel pumps which wecan vouch certainly work very wellindeed.

Despite their common heritage thereis a great deal of difference betweenthe 250hp and the 300hp models. It’sa lot more than the sticker on theside. The more powerful STZEversion gives you the “go-fastpackage” comprising a bigger oilcooler, gallery cooled pistons and abig-breathing twenty four valve head. The end result is a significant jumpin the continuos horsepower rating, and this is the power rating thatmatters to you and I. The 250hp hasa continuous rating of 210hp, whilstthe 300hp engine has a continuousrating of 255hp. That makes a hell ofa difference if you are working in thecritical 7.0 – 8.0m zone as we havebeen.

It’s the difference between having aboat that sparkles even though it’sheavily loaded, and one that iswooden and lethargic at the bestspeed you can sustain all day. In thisinstance, the Yanmar 6LP-STZEoffers a continuous power to weightratio of 255hp (that’s 188kW) for aninstalled weight of approximately522kg.

It’s very early days yet, but we areextremely pleased with the Yanmar’sperformance and its ability to pushDusty Rover through the water atsuch high levels of performance. Andmake no mistake about this – we’retalking about cruising at 25-26 knotswith a 5 tonne sportfisherman drivenby a single 225hp (continuous) dieselusing around 43-45 L/ph. We thinkthat’s pretty darn good, andespecially so considering it will geteven better as the fuel load isconsumed enroute to its far-offdestination. So far, the mothershipconcept has stayed on track, despitelosing some of its trailerboat potentialas the weight headed past themaximum limit of 4.5 tonnes.

The Yanmar has shown it can easilyhandle the 5-tonne load, with a levelof performance that confirms ourengine strategy thus far, is right ontrack.

The SydneyINTERNATIONAL

BoatshowThe Sydney International Boatshow held annually in July at the SydneyConvention & Exhibition Centre located on the picturesque Sydney Harbouragain proved to be a winner for both exhibitors and attendees alike.

Some 300 exhibitors showcased their product over the six day event whichis a highlight of the Australian Boatshow Circuit.

With all six Australian mainland states conducting similar exhibits betweenMay and August each year it certainly is a busy time for the PowerEquipment team and their loyal dealer network.

A healthy export market and increasing interest in the boating lifestyle(which Australia as an island continent is well suited) delivered a welcomeand timely sales boost for all exhibitors.

The 2001 exhibition saw over 80,000 attendees, the largest ever crowdfigure for the 10 years of exhibiting at this excellent venue.

Power Equipment displayed a comprehensive range of the Yanmar Marineproduct. As shown in the above photo, the highlight of the event was thatPower Equipment was able to show, for the first time, the Yanmar 500hp6CX-GTE2 which generated some great interest and if this is any indicationthis product has a very exciting future among the local Australian Boatingfraternity.

The need to improve crop yields andachieve better farming efficiency hasput pressure on producers to installlarge-scale irrigation systems toprotect their future production. Centrepivot irrigation systems offer the mostefficient and accurate use of water, especially when automatic orcomputer control is included.

These irrigators can be up to 12spans in length and cover up to 120hectares. Span lengths can be up to59 metres with end overhangs up to18 metres.

Power Equipment have recentlydeveloped a new tool in specifyinggenerators for the irrigators which arepurpose built according to the numberof spans, size of electric motors andwhether an end gun sprayer is fitted.

The Australian Pocket OxfordDictionary uses the wordswholeness, soundness and honestyto describe the word integrity andthese are all words that define thismodel perfectly. Integrity is exactlywhat this 35 footer is all about, asound, well designed and laid outflybridge cruiser that deliverseverything her builders promise.

When I first saw the test boat at theAnchorage Marina at Port Stephensin NSW, I initially thought she wasEuropean, maybe a Phantom or thelike. But as my family, whoaccompanied me on this test, and Igot closer it became clear this wasa completely individual boat and animpressive one at that. Beauty issometimes only skin deep, but in thiscase there is performance to match.

Naval architect Bernie Cohen, fromthe Sunshine Coast-basedcompany, Integrity Marine Australia, originally designed this boat toaccommodate twin sterndrives andproduced the hull in two formats. The first were fairly basic vessels forthe bareboat charters market. Theywere powered by twin 50hp diesel'sand designed to cruise around atabout 10kts. The second were well-appointed flybridge cruisers

powered by twin 260hp dieselsterndrives that pulled more than40kts at 3800rpm. But this vesselhas completed a motivetransformation and now she’spowered by two Yanmar 230hpshaftdrive diesels. Not only has thismade vast improvements to fuelconsumption figures, but it makesberthing and slow-speedmanoeuvring a breeze because theboat can be steered with theengines without using the rudders.

To accommodate the shafts, propsand rudders, tunnels have been builtinto the hull, which reduces thechance of cavitation and limitsbelow-keel extensions. The hull isa monohedron design with a 15-degrees deadrise, whichincorporates wide, downturnedchines that generate exceptional lift. This helps the hull jump onto theplane, while remaining level with nobow-up attitude. The chines actuallylift the transom rather than buryingit when the power is initially applied. That’s unlike many other vessels inthis class.

The monohedron hull also aids theboat’s turning ability. Like allshaftdrives with rudders, she won’tturn on a dime, but the turns are

smooth, extremely stable and give thedriver plenty of confidence in herhandling abil it ies. There is alsoabsolutely no cavitation during tightturns. The bow slices through chopeasily and those big chines throw thespray well away from the hull toproduce a dry ride. There is also no“station-wagon effect” – where sprayis sucked into the rear cockpit whenunderway – to dampen the spirits ofanyone seated on the lounges. Theboat is fitted with trim tabs and theseneed only be trimmed in slightly to gain

a few extra knots out of the hull. Atrest the Integrity is also extremelystable because its oversized chinesreduce lateral movement.

Like its predecessor this is a familyorientated boat and it’s clearlyevident in her internal layout. TheIntegrity 35 features three private, double staterooms, two with doublebeds and the other with two 185cmlong bunks. Up forward the mainstateroom has an impressive islandbed and there’s plenty of storage inthe draws below it. Twin hanginglockers keep the clothes off the bedand stylish down lighting creates asoothing atmosphere. A deck hatchwith flyscreen and two opening portholes allow flow-through ventilation, which negates the need for noisyair-conditioning. The joinery here, like the rest of the boat, sports acherrywood finish.

Guests are also well catered for ina suite situated under the saloonsole. This cabin has a double bedand there’s a separate closet withdraws. His and hers night lightsmakes reading in bed possiblewithout disturbing your partner.Once again we find two opening portholes for ventilation plus a 12V,34cm TV and VCR bracket mount

The galley - you'll think you're inyour kitchen at home.

so a gogglebox can be installed.Across in the third cabin twin bunksare the go, which are ideal for thekids. Even though you get anothertwo port holes, a fan has been addedto circulate the air. The head featuresa frameless glass screened showerwith wall-mounted nozzle and thereis ample standing room in thiscubicle. A vanity unit and a LectraSan toilet are opposite the showerand towel rails have been placed onthe head wall. Again there is anopening port hole for ventilation andthe door locks.

A small set of steps take you up intothe impressive main saloon. Highquality materials and fabrics havebeen used in its fitout and the effectis obvious. There’s a heavily paddedand extremely comfortable L-shapedlounge to port and a large fullyappointed, sunken galley tostarboard. The galley featuresimitation-Corian bench tops for mealpreparation and food can either becooked in the microwave or on thetwo burner gas stove. With a fullsized sink and 140lt fridge withfreezer compartment you’ll thinkyou’re in your kitchen at home. There’s also heaps of cupboardspace and stylish flickmixer tapware. The saloon is spacious, carpeted andfeatures a handcrafted woodencoffee table. A multi-stacker CD andcassette player supplies the musicor you can watch another TVmounted in a custom-made timbercabinet in the ceiling. The removabledining table can also be used in theaft cockpit or up in the flybridge.

At the helm you have everything eventhe most fastidious skipper couldwant and its all ergonomically laidout. The helm station features fullinstrumentation and the single-leverMorse electronic-engine control aresilky smooth. Trim tabs and hydraulicsteering make controlling this boateasy, while the beautiful upholsteryand a wooden sports steering wheeladd a touch of class. A 7” Raytheonradar plotter and displayincorporating GPS means you’llalways be on the right track. Out inthe aft cockpit there’s a 12Vtoploading fridge so it’s a simple taskto keep the drinks chilled. Access tothe engine room is aided by ahydraulically-operated hatch andthere’s a hot and cold transomshower to wash off the grease shouldyou get dirty. This cockpit is also selfdraining.A stainless steel ladder with teakinserts leads to the flybridge whichis set up to look after the family. Thearea incorporates an aft-facing sun-

lounge, a huge U-shaped loungeunder the targa arch and a three-person helm seat. The entire areais carpeted and twin speakersdeliver music from the saloon CDplayer. The dash features fullinstrumentation and a colour fishfinder, while the helm is a classicfive-spoke, stainless steel, cruiserwheel.

As far as the family theme goes theIntegrity 35 is an ideal vessel forextended cruising. If mum, or dadfor that matter, doesn’t feel likecooking a three course meal in themore than adequate galley, it’s outwith the BBQ on the aft cockpit. Youcan watch a video after tea, or howabout a game of Scrabble in themain cockpit? There’s plenty ofroom in this main saloon forentertaining visitors and at

evening’s end mum, dad and thekids can bunk down. And there’senough room for one set of grandparents to stay onboard should theneed arise. With a fuel capacity of900lt and an hourly fuel burn rateof 42lt per hour at 22 knots, theIntegrity 35 can cruise non-stop foraround 20 hours. You could go fromSydney to Brisbane in that time. Thegelcoat finish on the Integrity 35 isflawless, the joinery shows skilledcraftsmanship and only high qualitycomponentry has been used in the

Aussie built Integrity’s fitout. We oftenhear that many boats are betterequipped and laid out than somepeople’s houses. And they cost morethan some houses too. For ownerDavid McElwaine this is especiallyrelevant.

David hadn’t initially intended to buy a

ENGINE ROOM

The Integrity 35 is powered by twin230hp, shaftdrive Yanmar diesels. The boat is rated to twin 300hp, sixcylinder diesels, although thisrequires an upgrade to the‘lengthened hull option’. We foundthe twin 230’s able to handleanything asked of them and unlessyou want to go offshore racing , thebigger engines would be an overkill.Yanmar’s 4LH-STE, 230hp also hasa good power-to-weight ratio andcan be used either with straight, angled or V-drive Hurth gearboxes.

These engines are also surprisinglyquiet, even with the sound-insulatedengine hatch open. They have beendesigned for low smoke emissionswhen accelerating or idling. TheYanmar 4LH-STE is an in-line four, direct injection, water cooled andturbocharged engine with amaximum output of 169kW at thecrankshaft. Considering the boatdisplaces 6.7 tonnes, its spritelyperformance is testimony to theexcellent match of engines and hull.

On the day of the test the Integrity35 pulled 10 knots at 1500rpm;15knots at 2000rpm; 20knots at2700rpm; 24knots at 3000rpm and27knots at 3300rpm spinning a 20”propeller. Builder Bernie wasn’tentirely satisfied with these figuresand a new prop, with a changed ofpitch and no cup has been fitted tothe boat. Now she pulls 30knts atwide open throttle. This is morethan adequate for offshore cruisingconsidering that boat’s optimumcruising speed is 24knots.

higher than at present fordeliveries made from April,2001. The continuous powerratings remain the unchanged.

The increase is due to thegravity differences between thefuel oil used in the United Statesand at the Nagahama plant inJapan (0.86 at 25oC comparedwith 0.832), and the effect ofrunning-in operation (as outputincreases due to the decline in

friction after 30-50 hours ofoperation).

The engine name plates willstate both the continuous poweroutput, which is the same as atpresent and required under IMOregulations, and the fuel stoppower (based on ISO 3046),which has this 5% increase. Thechanges for each model arelisted in the table to the left.

limited to our Marine Department, quite to thecontrary. Our Power Products team has workedjust as tirelessly to position Yanmar as the No1Choice for Industrial and Agricultural users andcapture new business. To this end, YanmarTNE Series multi cylinder watercooled engineshave now become the brand chosen byAustralia’s largest manufacturer of Skid SteerLoaders. This is a very exciting development, which will be crystallised with the release ofnew product from this OEM in January 2002,and will no doubt be featured in our next issueof Power News.

To the un-initiated, the recently developed TFSeries engine shutdown kit, released for thefirst time in this edition may not seem all thatimportant. But for those of us in the trade, thisis truly a fantastic and innovative developmentwhich end users will be delighted with. Now,not only will this be a cheaper, simpler andquicker option, but it gives the user a modularplug-in control system of their choice, whilstleaving the speed control lever totally un-incumbered, and hence available to do it’s job, that is, vary the engine speed if the user sodesire’s. All other conventional systems havea shutdown solenoid attached to the speedcontrol lever resulting in a more complicatedsystem, and the engine only being able to runat a fixed speed. This will be a welcomedevelopment for users of these engines andwe expect to see this reflected in a surge ofnew orders for TF Engines fitted with thisunique and innovative system.

Such has been our success in 2001, that

The first year of our second decade inbusiness has certainly been one that willprovide the historians with an abundanceto write about. Not so much the antics ofPower Equipment, although there’s plentyto say on that topic, but both major Domesticand International drama’s, which havecaptured the attention of us all.

At Power Equipment there have been nolack of challenges either. The first half sawa number of key new staff come on board, and I’m pleased to report that theirassimilation and contribution in the secondhalf has been a welcome relief. Despite theweak Australian Dollar we have workedhard to maintain prices, seek out newcustomers to grow our business, as well asmaintain and nurture our very importantexisting customer base. The key new Yanmar engine released atthis year’s Sydney Boatshow was thestunning new turbocharged and intercooled24 valve, 500 horsepower, 6CX-GTE2marine engine. The first pair delivered intoAustralia are featured in the Black Watch40 on the front cover of this issue. As wego to print, the next boat to be powered bythe same engines, a Riviera 40 isundergoing initial seatrials (more on this inthe next issue of Power News). The sale ofthese engines to Riviera was a landmarkorder, as it represents the very first Yanmarengines ever to be sold to this pre-eminentAustralian Boatbuilder. More orders forother Yanmar models are expected to beplaced by Riviera in 2002, and it is hopedthat from small seeds, bigger things willgrow. Such is the performance of Yanmar’srange of Powerboat Engines, that invariablyonce tried, end users become hooked onthe reliability and fuel efficient performancethey deliver. This could not be moreevidenced by the que forming for the new500hp engines, with now 2 out of the top 3,local 40 Ft Gameboat Builders installing thispower plant just as soon as stocks havebecome available!

However our success in 2001 has not been

reference to the graph in this issue suppliedby market research company, “EquipmentResearch Group”, shows that Yanmar is aclear market leader; 50% ahead of it’snearest rival. This is testimony to what canbe achieved when the recipe is right; that is:-

Arguably the best range and qualityof Diesel Engines available in the Worldtoday, at stable and competitive prices.

A sensitive and responsiveinternational manufacturer who strivesfor perfection and innovation, and wholistens to what his customers are saying.

A local team with a network ofpassionate people who enjoy what theyare doing, thrive on success, and enjoyshowing the opposition a clean set ofheals.

A loyal customer base thatappreciates receiving the professionaland personal attention that they deserve.

These hallmarks are often sought, but theskill for management is to bring all theseforces together, all at the same time. I’mpleased to say that Yanmar and its extendedfamily here in Australia have only enjoyedthe success that we have, because of thegenuine co-operation and endeavour of allconcerned.

To our valued Staff, Customers,Suppliers, and all at Yanmar, I wish youall a Safe and Happy Christmas, and aProsperous New Year. On behalf of Avriland myself, l thank you all for your helpand support in 2001.
