Well here we are again with the first month of the new year already behind us.

The February edition always seems to be a quiet one with not much happening and all the organisations not back in full swing at the time of going to print.

One event happening this month is the Pancake Party - see page 7 for more details.

You will also see on page 29 that we wish to form an editorial committee. It would be good to get some representatives from the organisations in the village who regularly send in reports and some villagers who are interested in the future of the magazine.

Do something amazing this year and support an older person in NorfolkEvery year, thousands of older people look to local charity Age UK Norfolk for support. Whether it’s a bit of advice in a time of need, help filling out complicated forms or just a friendly chat when they’re feeling lonely, we are here to help.

But we can’t do it alone. Without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers who give up their own time, we couldn’t deliver all the services that we do. This year, following on from campaigns such as Good Morning Britain’s 1 Million Minutes, we’re asking if you could pledge some time to help make a change in someone’s life.

No experience is necessary, and whatever your talents and interests, there is bound to be a voluntary opportunity where you can share your knowledge, make new friends and make a real difference.

All volunteers are offered full training and will get ongoing support and advice from the volunteer management team.

To find out more call 01603 785 241 or visit www.ageuknorfolk.org.uk

Trustees required, supporting older people in Norfolk!

Age UK Norfolk is entering unchartered waters and challenging times, as their services supporting older people become increasingly more in demand. The Norfolk charity is seeking Trustees who are experts in their field - strategic planners and landscape changers who can help drive the organisation forward.

Age UK Norfolk is recruiting Trustees with skills in areas such as accountancy, health and social care, commissioning and service development, social policy and fundraising. Contact Paula Skelton on 01603 785 235 or email [email protected] for more information.

Disabled parking spacesWe would like to remind everyone that the disabled parking spaces around the village mean what they say and should only be used by people with Blue Badges. Even if you are just going to be a ‘few’ minutes that space could be needed by a disabled person and could cause a lot of inconvenience. Please do think of those not so able as yourself.

News from Long Stratton Village HallExciting News at the Village Hall!

We are pleased to announce that at the start of the month the main hall floor is being refurbished - a big thank you to Paul Worley and his team at Stratton Flooring for their support with this project, this will make a great difference to all users.

We are still looking for a local builder who can support in repairing the war memorial base at the hall; please contact Kirsty Dye at [email protected] if you can help at all.

The following poem has been sent to us and as the title says it is ‘food for thought’.

If you have a poem you have written and would like to share with us please do send it in.

Food for ThoughtThere are so many people who have nobody there,

nobody to talk to or their troubles share. With people living longer, as we are told will be,

more help will then be needed or this may never be.We know there is a problem - enough helpers now not there - we now have a great decision - in how we deal with ‘CARE’.

Hence for the years ahead more help there just must be, and more thought right now is needed - this by both you and me.

So take a look about you to see what you can do to help the folks around you - their lives to help renew.

Just count all your blessings, then see what you can do, as but for good fortune for help it could mean ‘YOU’.

Evelyn

LOCAL WALK .... JanuaryFollowing the complete washout of New Year’s Day, the bank holiday Monday dawned sunny and bright. Nine of us gathered in the car park to embark on the first walk of 2017 led by Bonnie.

Taking two cars we set off to St Catherine’s Church at Fritton. The church is worthy of a visit, containing as it does fragments of medieval wall paintings and smiling lions around the font.

We headed off along the drive crossing the lane at the bottom to a footpath. The marker post was in poor repair and we would have

missed our way had our leader not done a ‘recci’ the day before in the pouring rain to check all was well. There was much chatter and swapping of stories of Christmas and New Year celebrations. It was nice to meet new walkers and catch up with the ‘regulars’. Hence I’m a little hazy on the directions taken.

As always, we were on the lookout for wildlife and spotted a hare racing off into the distance as we approached. The horses were too far away for a photo but the cattle and calf in their barn obliged. As we continued along a track a notice warned of a young puppy. We were soon being greeted enthusiastically by Dolly.

Those with maps looked to see where we were on our route and the others nodded and smiled! We turned into Steppings Lane though the sign was quite well camouflaged. With much talk of where the lane led in both directions we walked on. Turning

right into water meadows we headed back towards our starting point. There was a selection of stiles on the way including one that showed that the art of chivalry is alive and well [see picture on front cover].

Just as we got back into the cars there was a short sharp fall of icy rain. Perfect timing and another very enjoyable walk.

Perhaps we’ll see you next month - Monday February 6th, 10am at the toilets in the car park.

Barbara

News from the LionsThe Christmas Collection raised a wonderful £367. Out thanks to the generous people of Long Stratton and surrounding villages, and to the Co-op who again kindly made their premises available to us.

We were able to make extra donations to Harker House, Depwade Court, the Day Centre, and the Parish lunch for their Christmas activities.

Special thanks to the Manor House Dental Practice who raffled a cake and ran across the road with £20 for our collection. What a lovely surprise that was!

Wacton Parish Council

The Parish Council meeting on Wednesday 4th January 2017 was attended by four councillors, County Councillor Alison Thomas and District Councillor Des Fulcher. Also present were eight members of public.

Councillor Rene Rowson reported that the children’s Christmas party was a huge success and thanked Wacton Social Club for their donation towards the party. Many thanks to all who helped prior and during the party.

There are some refurbishment/repairs being planned within the village on various items, eg. the well, the benches and the Wacton sign.

There were many questions raised by the public regarding the planned removal by BT of the telephone box. The clerk will relay them to South Norfolk Council and BT.

Members of the public and councillors stated that the Father Christmas sat on the bench was brilliant idea and wondered what Councillor Gary Mulhall will be doing for Christmas 2017!

County Councillor Alison Thomas reported that budget consultation is due to close shortly. Also that there are issues with the adult social care and childcare being over budget and this is unlikely to be resolved in the near future. Alison also reported on the bypass and housing proposals.

District Councillor Des Fulcher reported that he will be handing out the remaining monies in his member award grant to Wacton Community Woodland Project.

The Village Hall Management Committee reported that a new light has been installed by the steps and will be operational soon.

Next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st February 2017 at 7pm in the Village Hall.

Suzie Mulhall, Clerk

Don Baker announced that the final Computer Club meeting had taken place on 15th December, closure due to lack of interest. We had received an offer of lower electricity prices from our supplier, which reminded us that we had not sought quotes from alternative sources in the last three years. This will now be rectified. The last meeting before Christmas was rounded off in the traditional fashion.

Long Stratton Medical PartnershipCoughs and colds are widespread at this time of year, indeed young children can get 6-10 upper respiratory infections per year and for their parents winter can seem to bring almost continuous illness. The vast majority of coughs are simple viral infections for which antibiotics offer no benefit. Most will clear up within three weeks. Self-help methods include resting, keeping well hydrated, sucking lozenges and taking painkillers such as paracetamol. Symptoms often seem to be worse at night when propping up the pillow may help to a degree. Your pharmacist may be able to advise on over the counter cough medicines although they should be avoided in children under the age of six and only with professional advice for children aged 6-12. There is as much evidence that honey and lemon soothes the symptoms of a cough as there is for some of the over the counter preparations.

Some coughs, however, are a sign of a more serious underlying infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Other conditions, for example asthma, acid reflux or even medication side effects can cause a cough. In smokers a persisting cough might be a sign of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Lung cancer can cause a long-term cough, again particularly in smokers. So, what are the signs that your cough is more than just a simple cough? Any cough lasting more than three weeks should prompt a visit to the GP. Signs to watch for include a persisting high temperature, feeling breathless or wheezy, or chest pain. Other symptoms that need prompt review are coughing up blood or a cough associated with systemic symptoms such as night sweats or weight loss. Please contact your GP if any of these symptoms are affecting you as you may need additional treatment or investigations.

If you are concerned about a new diagnosis and would like further information or have a condition that you would like advice on then visit the Health A-Z index on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk. This website is very informative and covers a wide range of conditions, symptoms, medicines and treatments.

Long Stratton Parish CouncilThe Street, Long Stratton, Norwich NR15 2AH

Chairman: Mr S Adcock Clerk: Mrs R BennettTel: 01508 530524 Email: [email protected]

County Councillor Alison Thomas reported: In relation to the budget, there were problems in Children’s and Adults services with significant overspends and non-delivery of savings meaning it will require significant investment to put right. The decision for Councillors is whether to add 3% for Adults services (which the government now allows) bringing council tax up to 4.8% which is an increase of £1.10 per week for band D property. With reference to the High School the local authority is providing support and intervention to ensure improvement is achieved following disappointing results this year. The new Head and Chair of Governors have a robust improvement plan to achieve this.

District Councillor Kevin Worsley reported : He was following closely the community asset strategy which was discussed at cabinet today. The district council were also looking at the budget and precept decisions.

District Councillor Des Fulcher reported: He made an apology for comments made at the turf cutting in August 2016. He had used his member ward grant towards a project at Wacton relating to a wildlife area. He would like to raise the issue of car parking in Long Stratton, especially with planned future growth and asked that this be put on a future agenda. He thought that the Christmas trees looked great, despite negative comments regarding cost, and particularly thanked Cllr Davey for her work towards this.

A resident thanked and congratulated the council on the Christmas tree lights. On another issue, he asked that the council revisit the issue of dogs on the playing field.

The parish council were considering a grant to the school to enable them to carry out remedial work to the pool and keep it open.

The budget for the coming year was agreed and would be published on the website. It was agreed to set the precept at £117200. This would mean there would be no increase per band D household.

Orbit Homes would be attending the February meeting to feed back on their consultation exercise regarding development at St Mary’s.

A Christmas Light Working Party was set up and feedback from residents was sought.

Co-option of councillor - Mr Paul Worley was invited to join the council. The other candidate was thanked for their continued interest and invited to put themselves forward should another vacancy arise.

The council were sad to note that Brena Bowker, who had previously worked for the council, had passed away.

Full Council Meeting – Monday 13th February 2017 at 7pm at the Methodist church

Stormy WeatherAs months go, I’m not sure anyone would say, ‘Gosh I love February, it’s my absolute favourite month!’ Unless it was your birthday I suppose. It’s the time of year when winter appears to be lasting forever and even though glimmers of new life might be appearing in your garden, the joy of Christmas is just a distant memory and spring seems miles away.

It’s an unpredictable month. The weather (always a bit random in Britain anyway) is one feature of that unpredictability. Sometimes it can be so mild that plants get confused, think spring is here and start blossoming, only to be sent into retreat by a hard frost. But it is also the month that we are most likely to see snow.

As a child, snow was the thing you hoped for. It was beautiful, exciting and exotic. It also meant time off school! Eating breakfast, listening to the radio and waiting to hear our school was closed was very exciting. (It was a more innocent age!) However, growing up in a very rural area, I was also aware that snow was a problem to be prepared for by my mum. In the winter the freezer and cupboards were always kept well stocked, ‘just in case we get snowed in’. Candles and spare gas for the camping stove were also stockpiled. Most of the time the snow went pretty quickly, but I do remember one year in the 80s when we ended up being proper snowed in for a week. The milk lorry couldn’t get out to the local farm so fresh milk wasn’t a problem and mum’s justification in being prepared was palpable. We had a coal fire so heat and hot water also weren’t an issue. As the ‘blitz spirit’ kicked in we had the neighbours who had converted to electric heating in for baths and to keep warm.

My brother and I didn’t have to worry about any of this as our only task was to be out, playing in the snow for as long as we could manage.

Older brothers, hmm. If you have one you’ll know what I mean. We get on fine now (we live 400 miles apart) but back then we used to fight a little. And one of my abiding memories of snow was walking in the fields, clambering across a snowdrift and starting to sink. I naturally called out to my big brother for him to help me get out. His response was to laugh loudly and walk off. I had to get myself out of the drift.

Sometimes we can fear change and things that aren’t predictable. We can get ourselves into a state about things that we can’t control. But we have to remember that God is with us in all the unpredictable bits of life as well as the mundane and routine. God won’t just lift us out of the snowdrift in a supernatural way, but neither will God laugh and walk off from us in our time of need. Being there as our backup, God helps us in finding a way to get ourselves out and we will grow stronger through our experiences.

As you turn over the calendar into February and all that it has to bring, I hope you will see that you are never alone in whatever lies ahead. And if we do get some significant snow, stay away from the drifts!

Deacon Julie Hudson

Diggers & DibblersTuesday 14th February - 7.30pm at Forncett Village Hall - Andrew BroganAndrew introduced us to his wonderfully exotic and sumptuous garden at Henstead at the end of 2015, with the frost decorating the stunning leaves and sculptural plants gave ‘exotic’ a fresh twist. This year he will continue the story of how the garden grew and developed in his own inimitable style. A delightful and very entertaining speaker, we can be sure of a great mixture of fascinating facts and laughter. Andrew will also be bringing plants to sell.
