Chess Club Our Booragul A and Booragul B Chess teams played out the remaining rounds of their tournament at Barnsley last Tuesday. The competition from St Mary’s, Barnsley and Biddabah was tough and our skilled Stage 2 students played against a number of older, more experienced Stage 3 students. We won many of our games and the sportsmanship and fair play demonstrated by our students was outstanding. At the end of the tournament, our Booragul A team came 4th and our Booragul B team came 5th – a fantastic effort for our first time. Congratulations to our A team: Claire Wilson, Cooper Carlow, Caidan O’Neill Bishop and Josh Quinnell; and our B team: Andrew Wilson, Damon Forsyth, Jasmin Hignett and Tiffany Lam. The results of our C and D Chess teams have also been finalised and we can announce that our Booragul C team came 4th and Booragul D team came 5th in their tournament, where they played multiple teams from Avondale and Charlton Christian College. Congratulations to our C team: Samantha Keogh, Amber Crouch, Blayke Avery and Matthew Sheehan; and also our D team: Will Angel, Jade Crouch, Taylor Gill and Zac Bowling. Congratulations also to the Chess Club members who filled in and helped make our tournament achievements so successful: Joel Rea, Liam Tam and Millie Sarginson. I am so proud of the hard work these students have put in over the year learning how to play Chess, and then building on their skills and learning new strategies to become the great Chess players they each are now! All I can say is, look out next year! I must finish by thanking the wonderful parents who have helped us out by transporting our teams to all the different schools in our competition – we couldn’t have done it without you! Mrs Lawrence

REGIONAL ATHLETICS On Friday 30th September, Ms Horn had the honour of accompanying the Westlakes Regional Athletics team to the Regional Athletics Carnival, which was held at Glendale Sports Centre. The team consisted of over 60 students from schools in the Westlakes Zone, who qualified in a number of track and field athletics events. Whilst Booragul Public School had 7 students who qualified to represent the Westlakes Zone, only two were able to attend the carnival due to the Stage 3 Canberra Excursion. Claire Wilson and Amber Knight put their best feet forward in their events but just missed out on further qualification. Our Stage 3 students, Rily Brown, Katana Lewis, Tyra-Ruby Luschwitz, Kaitlin Morley and Hayley Cooper were able to have their Zone qualifications considered at the carnival and Rily has been successful in being selected to represent the Hunter Region at the State Athletics Carnival for the 13yrs High Jump Event. The carnival will be held in Sydney in October. Congratulations to all of our competitors and Good Luck at the next level Rily!

Canberra Excursion 2013:

On the 27th of August, 2013 Booragul Public School’s 45 Stage Three students went away on the most AWESOME excursion in the history of excursions! Australia’s Capital Territory…

!!CANBERRA!!

We had an amazing time and visited a lot of places; however we have managed to pick out some of our favourites. One of our favourites was definitely THE SNOW! We had a three-hour bus trip before we finally arrived, but it was worth it. We had a giant snowball fight with Mr Henley and Mr Emanuel before forming two trains - the “H” and “E” train, which we took down the giant, snow covered hill. Some people were freezing because the snow had soaked through their gloves While in Canberra, we visited Questacon! It was a combination of heaps of fun and scary times. Everyone loved Questacon! Canberra was the best excursion so far for Stage Three. Here are some of our memories: • Mrs Pallas calling us Gentleman because of our manners and seeing our room for

the first time…Jackson • I was about to drop a 10kg snowball on Hayley’s head when a snowball hit me in the

face and I dropped it on my own foot…Tim • I threw a snowball at Mr Henley accidently hitting him in the face… Ellaraine • When we first went to our room, Chloe tripped over a suitcase in the dark…Bella • The adrenalin rush all over as you let go of the bar going down the Giant Drop at

Questacon. Also the excitement on everyone’s faces as they watched the amazing Lightning Show. It gave everyone a buzz for the rest of the trip…Makayla A

• When Millie and Riley dressed up at Parliament…Ebony • When I gave Mr Henley a warhead and he pulled a funny

face because it was sour…Chloe B • Ms Pallas was playing with my feet to wake me up and

said it was like tormenting a pussycat…Chloe W • The most annoying thing was when Tim was playing opera

music to wake me up. The best thing was Telstra Tower because the view was awesome…Brandon

• When we taught Ms Pallas to take selfies and all of the good poses…Teyani

PAGE 6 BOORAGUL PUBLIC SCHOOL • When I was ready to go down the slide at Questacon I

missed the first part and dropped to the bottom. It felt spectacular…Kiara O

• Mr E’s funky dance moves on the bus.. Makayla Q • The War Memorial…Nic B • When the teachers came to wake us up and I heard them

saying how cute we were.. Kasey R • That one moment when I was 875m in the air. I was

freezing cold but I felt so majestic as if the entire world had just frozen and I was the only person in the world.. Millie

• The giant slide at Questacon that every person screamed on…Summer

• At the War Memorial all the sound effects and fans making it seem like the real thing when we were standing in front of a helicopter and there was a huge gunshot that made us both jump so high and scream at the top of our lungs…Danielle

• The big slide at Questacon was steep and spectacular and as soon as I went down my belly just dropped. It was the weirdest feeling I have ever had…Angelina • The most special moment of the Canberra trip was AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) when you had free time and there was heaps to do like running, playing basketball, riding a bike like in the Tour de France race and

even arm wrestling. • The most special moment of the Canberra trip was when

we were at Telstra Tower BEHIND THE BARS…Zak • The most special moments of the Canberra trip were

when Kaitlin and I were singing the whole way and when I hit Mr Henley in the face with a massive snowball…Kasey

• My favourite memory was the snow because everyone had fun and we had snowball fights…Katana

• My favourite memory would be all that snow and when I threw snowballs at people…Caleb

• Parliament House was really interesting and fun…Charlotte

• The War Memorial made me think of the past remember the people who fought for our country…Brianna

• The most special moments were when you

became closer to all the people on the trip not only your friends…Alison • The funniest part of the snow was when I was

walking and my foot got stuck in the snow. People were throwing snow at me so I was grabbing snow and throwing back at them…Phebe • Having fun in the helicopter at the War Memorial.

It was like going back to the time that the war was

going on…Sam • My favourite memory of Canberra was when we were at Telstra

Tower. It was scary because I am afraid of heights. We were outside and I could feel the tower moving around…Chelsea

• My favourite things were Questacon and the snow…Tom • The most special moment in Canberra was when we entered the

discovery zone at the War Memorial and did all of the mini activities…James

• My favourite memory was the big slide at Questacon where you hold onto the bar and when you are ready you let go and drop onto a metal slide. It was cool…Riley

• My favourite memory of Canberra is Telstra Tower…Aiden VM • The most special moment of the Canberra trip was the Telstra Tower

view. It was high but still cool. Canberra was awesome…Brayden • My favourite memory of Canberra was when Mrs Pallas was trying to

take Tom’s McDonalds Sunday…Riley B • I think the best part of Canberra was sharing a room with Kasey,

Katana and Brianna; laughing, talking and having lots of fun…Kaitlin

Thank you Mrs Pallas,

Mr Emanuel, Mr Holt and Mr Henley.

KINDER – YEAR 2

MINI ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Dear parents/Carers, We will be holding our Mini Athletics Carnival for our K – 2 students at school on Wednesday, 9th October, commencing at 11.30am and finishing at 2.30pm. The day will be about fun, fitness and participation, where the students will get the opportunity to try a variety of games and activities, as well as age races and house relays. We would like the students to wear their house colours if possible, which are:-

• HUNTER - YELLOW

• MACQUARIE - BLUE

• REID - RED

• SHORTLAND - GREEN

Please ensure your child wears sport shorts/skirts and appropriate footwear. All students need to wear a hat and sunscreen and bring a water bottle. We are anticipating finishing our activities at about 1.30pm where we will adjourn for a picnic lunch until 2.30pm. Cathy Johnson & Lisa Monaghan Mini Athletics Organisers

We would also like to inform families, that as promised, each student is entitled to a rebate thanks to the Australian Federal Government’s Civics and Citizenship (PACER) program. The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per eligible student under the PACER program towards travel expenses incurred. We would like to thank the government for their support of this program.
