LeGeNDARyNow also in Singapore, the smallest state of Southeast Asia: 48 SMARTconverters will be in service on the Singapore Circle Line (CCL). From September 2013 to the beginning of 2015, SMA will supply auxiliary power converters for the Alstom vehicles based on the Metropolis platform. CCL is Singapore’s first fully automated underground line connecting the existing, highly dense public trans-port network. Tourists will also benefit from the new mass rapid transit line that will provide fast and comfortable trans-port to various places of interest such as the Merlion, Singapore’s most famous landmark.

SIMPLy GOODIn Los Teques, the capital of the Vene-zuelan state of Miranda, metro line 2 is currently under construction and will enter service in 2015. The on-site expansion will connect the public transport network to the Caracas metro system. For the fleet Alstom will be delivering six-car trains based on the Metropolis platform. Also part of the project: the SMARTconverter. Three au-xiliary power converters will supply one train. They will function according to the principle of active redundancy, thus provi-ding a less complex on-board AC supply system, reduced weight and lower costs. Deliveries to Alstom’s site in Valenciennes will start in October 2013.

DULY ARRIVED SUCCeSS FOR PeSA IN GeRMANy

Highly anticipated in Germany: the diesel multiple-unit, also known under the nickname “regio shark“, from the Polish manufacturer PESA Bydgoszcz SA. At the beginning of May 2013 it had its first test runs in Trier, Germany, and will enter service in one year. From December 2014, the Link II will commute on its new home track in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria.

The twelve factory-new trains, each equipped with two SMARTchargers, will commute between the Bavarian towns of Regensburg-Marktredwitz-Schirnding. For PeSA, this order from 2011 is of special importance, signifying a further milestone in the history of this company with its long

tradition, founded in 1851. The contract concluded with Netinera Deutschland GmbH, the second largest private transportation company in Germany, was the first Link order from Germany.

A look back at the Bydgoszcz-based company’s history shows considerable development over the past 160 years. From 1920, the repair workshop already had more than 1,300 employees and started repairing trains for the Polish State Railways (PKP).

In 1989 the company set out on the course that has helped establish itself on the market. Today PESA is an expert in the construction, modernization and repair of rolling stock

SMA receives regular orders for the trains’ power supply. In the last years, we have delivered more than 100 SMARTconverters to PESA. The battery chargers have not only proved themselves in the Link vehicles commuting in Germany, but are also in service in Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Czech Republic and Ukraine.

South America – a growing market with high potential. Brazil in particular is considered to be a country with a flourishing rolling stock industry. This was one of the reasons why SMA Railway Technology GmbH decided to found a subsidia-ry in Itupeva, about 60 kilometers from the city of São Paulo. Continuous orders in Latin America con-firmed the decision to the effect that in December 2012 SMA Brasil Tecnologia Ferroviária LTDA was founded.

The focus of the subsidiary is the manufacturing and service of SMARTconverters. Apart from generous office space, the subsidiary’s premises include manufacturing halls with

about 600 square meters of space. Thus, contractors en-joy a fast turnaround for customer projects and operators can be guaranteed effective service. In the end, one of the main reasons for founding the company was to offer an internationally oriented customer service.

From a logistical point of view, Brazil is the ideal location to ensure local presence. Neighboring countries such as Venezuela or Chile can be reached within a few hours by plane and leading rolling stock manufacturers are repre-sented by companies in São Paulo.

São Paulo has its very own potential for the 100 per cent SMA subsidiary: Investment in public transport is indispen-

DIeSeL HyDRAULICSELECTRIC PoWER SUPPLY FoR AUXILIARY ConSUMERS

Until now, the auxiliary consumers in diesel-hydraulic multiple-units are, in most cases, mechanically coupled to the diesel engine. However, with increasing requirements in respect of comfort, flexibility and the environment, an electric power supply for the auxiliary consumers becomes expedient. To make this possible, an electric on-board supply with suffi-cient power has to be provided.

Nippon Sharyo U.S.A. for instance uses an electric power supply for the auxiliary consumers of its new diesel-hydraulic multiple-units of the American passenger rail services Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (San Rafael, California) and Metrolinx (Toronto, Canada). A permanent magnet synchronous generator that is rigidly coupled to the traction motor supplies an auxiliary power converter with an input voltage with variable frequency and amplitude. An auxiliary power converter of the SMARTconverter product family transforms this variable input voltage both into a steady-state DC voltage for charging the on-board battery and supplying the DC consumers and an AC voltage with steady frequency and amplitude for supplying the AC voltage consumers.

Until now, many of these diesel-hydraulic multiple-units have not had an auxiliary power converter. Whereas a battery-backed DC supply for auxiliary consumers requiring an uninterrupted supply is generated, for instance, via a hydrostatic generator, in many cases there is no on-board AC supply. Thus, more powerful auxiliary consumers such as compressors for air conditioning or air supply must be powered mechanically, directly from the traction motor. This may sound easy at first, but it has several disadvantages. For instance, the components have to be installed close to the traction motor. Since in many cases this is not near the point of use, extensive constructions and distribution systems are necessary.

Another disadvantage of the conventional solution de-scribed above is the degree of efficiency. In general, the auxiliary consumers have to be designed so that they are able to provide the required power at the minimum speed

of the traction motor. However, in most cases, minimum speed is only provided when the multiple-unit is stationary or braking. In most operating ranges the speed is often significantly higher. At these operating points too much power is provided to the auxiliary consumers and the systems are operating in a range with a low degree of efficiency. Finally, the fact that the power supply requires a different design is a disadvantage. Whereas in the case of diesel-electric or entirely electric multiple-units similar com-ponents can be used for many systems, diesel-hydraulic and diesel-mechanic multiple-units require different solutions. The small number of non-variable parts always results in a cost disadvantage.

An auxiliary power converter can eliminate those disadvan-tages even in diesel-hydraulic vehicles. Apart from the DC voltage on-board supply, it also generates an AC on-board supply as used in diesel-electric or purely electric multiple-units. Besides the auxiliary power converter, a suitable generator is another important part of the system. Due to the variable speed of the traction motor, generators with adjustable excitation are a possible solution. However, their disadvantage is their complexity, size and behavior in the event of sudden load variations. Thus, permanent magnet synchronous generators are often used today. Permanently excited generators are especially suitable, because they are simple, compact and very reliable.

However, one of the characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous generators is that their output voltage and frequency change with the traction motor speed. There-fore, an adapter is necessary. This requirement can be met mechanically or hydraulically. In most cases, integrating this function into the auxiliary power converter is preferred as this is easier, more reliable and cost-effective. With the SMARTconverter product family, SMA provides a suitable and flexible solution tailored to meet those requirements.

DIVERSIFIED EXPERIEnCInG SAo PAULo BY METRo

High-rises next to picturesque buildingsGreen lung of the city: Parque do Ibirapuera

São Paulo is worth more than one journey and offers its visitors a variety of different impressions. Taking the metro, for instance Line 5, and getting off at the different stations is a convenient way of getting a glimpse of the different parts of the megacity. Its diverse facets extend from majestic skyscrapers next to building sites to cozy neighborhoods located along-side industrial settlements. Combined with excursions to festivals, theaters, museums, and last but not least, sports events, the visitor will enjoy a fascinating stay.

It is easy to imagine São Paulo as a vibrant metropolis, but apart from all the hustle and bustle there are also oases of pure calm. For instance, the expansion of Metro Line 5 will

soon offer its passengers a trip into the green lung of the city, the ‶Parque do Ibirapuera”, that similar to new York’s Central Park offers a welcome oasis for running, playing music, having a picnic or simply relaxing.

And for enjoying the arts. every two years, people interested in the arts from all over the world meet at the international art exhibition held in the ‶Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo”. After the documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale, the ‶Bienal de São Paulo” is considered to be the third largest global art exhibition.

However, internationality is nothing new to the city. With its transformation from the former center for coffee commerce

into Brazil’s economic capital the city has attracted more and more foreign immigrants. Today, more than ten million Paulistas of 100 different ethnicities live in the urban area of São Paulo and the metro network has become increasingly important for their mobility.

And this is where SMA Railway Technology GmbH comes into play: The SMARTconverters in service on Line 5, for instance, guarantee the smooth running of the vehicles.

TRACES oF HISToRYREnAISSAnCE oF THE STREETCAR In THE USA

Enjoying a renaissance in the United States: the so-called “streetcars“, typical trams “made in USA“, that were popular in past decades are making a comeback. The traditional means of transport has not only been enjoying a revival in the cities of Port-land in the State of Oregon, and Tucson, Arizona, but also in Washington D.C., capital and seat of government of the United States. Since July of this year evidence of the “Renaissance of the tram“ can again be seen on its streets.

The vehicles are manufactured by United Streetcar and continue the tradition of the American tram. The auxiliary power converter is ‶made in Germany”. The re-

designed vehicles are equipped with a fully redundant SMARTconverter. SMA Railway Technology GmbH has manufactured a total of 22 devices.

Work on the infrastructure in Portland and Tucson began in 2012 and the rail track construction is running at full speed. However, the new lines will not be put into operation until 2014.

In Washington D.C. the United Streetcar 100 trams are already in service, although the former vast streetcar network no longer exists. As in many other cities of the United States, the tram network was decommissioned in the 1960s.
