EDITOR’S LETTERAs I’m stood on the red carpet of the A Good Day To Die Hard premiere – in the freezing rain – I can only blame myself and my love for film that got me in to the situation. My love for film runs deep; it’s had me breaking ribs with laughter at the likes of Superbad, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka and Anchorman. It’s had me at the edge of my seat with films like The Dark Knight, Inception and Leon or simply in awe with the likes of The Shawshank Redemption, Gladiator and The Matrix (the first one, not the follow-up waste). As the film industry grows, so does the career of our cover star, Nicholas Hoult, and the rest of his UK counterparts; Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, James McAvoy, Idris Elba, we’re taking over. In one of his first lead roles in Jack the Giant Slayer, alongside fellow big Brit export Ewan McGregor, Hoult is making a name for himself in the industry. With Mad Max: Fury Road and X-Men: Days of Future Past, where the Berk-shire-bred 23 year-old reprises his role as “Beast”, Hoult’s hold on Hollywood will only get stronger. Mas-sive shout to Funny Tummy, the amazing artist who has made the limited edition covers of Nic’s biggest characters too. What do you think? Sick right? Hi RWD!,So on Christmas day my brother set me the task of doing the 50 day burpee challenge. Day 1: one burpee, Day 2: two burpees and so on... Not overly excited about the chal-lenge I have taken it up to get fit for my snowboarding holiday at the beginning of Feb. Now that we have all returned to work I cycle to 2.5 miles a day to my office, where upon arrival I am the only one in for at least an hour. I stripe off my cycling clothes, including top, with no bra on underneath as its easier to cycle without one, then I proceed to do my daily burpee count. It was last week when I was doing my topless 16 burpees that I started to struggle at number 10 that I look up to my office window a group of college kids staring at my through it. In shock and embarrass-ment I jump up and try and escape to the toilets to put my top on, but my legs give way and I end up flat on my back with a bunch of kids laughing at me. As it was less than a week ago they come by the office every morning hoping to catch me again. I now do my burpees at home (currently on day 22).Louise xx

FIDDY’S WORLD OF WHATEVERWe’ve been here before. Chantelle Fiddy and films, well, we aren’t the best of friends. The cinema (a place I’ve not found myself in for oooooh two years or so) really irritates my eyes. More often than not my mind flips between the screen and all those other things I could be doing. Eating. Drinking. Or watching for potential popcorn throwers; (salted) beef could be lurking anywhere. Next come the flashbacks. As a kid I was a good girl and got to go in one of those early examples of a 3D cinema; standing in a dome, the images surrounded you. Engulfed you. Took over your brain. And your body. There was a rollercoaster, the exit sign, plenty of stumbling and my stomach going like the clappers (truth, I don’t know what a clapper is either). I’m too shook to put on 3D specs now. And I’ve never actually ridden on an actual rollercoaster (I’ve been sick after a pirate boat and a waltzer previously, so no need). Most of my cinematic experiences I’ve ever had the displeasure of paying for, have been more disappointing than JD selling out of my size. Par. Why are there so many guns? Does everything have to be so noisy? What is even happening? I prefer to watch ‘bits’ of film – it might take years to see the whole thing but I treat it like those books you fight to finish because ultimately, in your heart of hearts, you know it’s sh*t. One flick (do people still use this word I wonder) I’ve actually watched twice (ratings people, ratings) is Pineapple Express. Can’t tell you the actors or anything remotely knowledgable. It’s a w**d comedy. Fact. A bloody funny one. I just doubt my mother will be going to see it any time soon.

“Welcome to the Punch is an intelligent thriller. I know it has a sort of generic cops and robbers storyline but it has a depth to it that you don’t really get with these types of films. Working on ...Punch was a lot of fun too. There were two days of acting and then the rest of it was running around shooting various machine guns. There is a machine gun fight [that was shot] in Ministry of Sound, which was crazy. I’ve never fired a gun as big as that before. With me, there has always been a pattern that I tend to work with the same directors I’ve worked with before. With Eran [Creevy] we did Shifty together – after that he had a lot of TV offers which could have made him a lot of money – but he wanted to make Welcome to the Punch. Looking back, it’s clear that everyone was great to work with from the cast and crew to Eran and the producers. Right now, I’m doing a play at the Donmar Warehouse, it’s called Trelawny Of The Wells, it’s by Joe Wright and it’s a completely out there, flamboyant, camp role. It’s a different part that people wouldn’t expect me to play. It’s a little bit scary but I not really scared about anything.”

ENOUGH ALREADY: BLOCKBUSTER

RWD predicted the demise of Blockbuster over a year ago, in this very segment, Enough Already; why are people shocked that the company is finally at the hands of the administrators? They’ve been on a three-wheeled life-support machine since 2001, having somehow survived multiple strokes in 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010. In 2007 there was a risky, try-and-keep-up-with-the-times triple-bypass – in the form of adding blu-rays to the roster – but we all knew that would only prolong the inevita-ble. British Judo champ Ashley McKenzie tells Nardene Scott about jumping queues at Nando’s, wanting to be Macaulay Culkin, getting kicked out of clubs, re-creating The Hangover and nearly shedding a tear watching The Colour Purple.

We didn’t get to actually meet you because we hear you were summoned by your coach into training? How’s it going for you?Yeah, I’m a bit busy at the moment. I’ve got the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and all that, so it’s a bit hard. I’m No.1 at the moment but basically I think it’s just about concentrating on the European and World Championships coming up, trying to get medals in events and get points up until Rio 2016.We also see that you’re busy doing a spot of modelling for Duck and Cover?Yeah, that’s been alright, cold moments but other than that it’s been pretty good. They’ve hooked me up with clothes and obviously I wear them all the time.So you consider yourself stylish then, but have you ever followed a trend that you wish you wouldn’t have?When I was younger, I used to have the big chains and I’m a pretty little man, so the big chain on me looks very, very big. It was a real one, you know, you had the balls...

You mean the rosary beads?Yeah, rosary beads but I didn’t have the cross, I just had the balls. I think that’s in my draw, I don’t know where it is, I can’t really pull that off now. I know you’re busy training but when you think of your ideal night out, what does it entail exactly?I’d start off probably in something like a casino; I do like a bit of roulette, so a casino in Vegas to start off with. It would be with the Willesden Judo club mates and the Camberley boys, they’re so much fun it’s unbelievable. Obviously when we’re training, we don’t drink and when we drink, we are a bit nuts. All the Judo boys have got quality banter.What’s the latest trouble you guys have got yourselves into?Oh jheez, there’s numerous times we’ve been chucked out the club. Obviously there’s a couple of people

trying it and it all got a bit messy but the worst thing is we do judo, so when the bouncers touch us, it’s a bit mad after that. And after the casino...?We’ll just do a mad little Hangover... You know how The Hangover ended just with a camera, like, what the hell! Nice. Since being on Big Brother and of course competing in the Olympics your profile must have raised. When was the last time you used your celebrity status to get something you wanted?Err this one is embarrassing, [laughs]. I was at Nando’s and I just told my manager to go and see if I can jump the queue and she was like, ‘I’ve got a client..’, I hid and then came out and they were like, ‘It’s Ashley from Big Brother’ and I was like ‘Yes, it’s me’.Just to jump the queue?! You didn’t even get a freebie?Nah, now I’ve got a couple of stamps, I get it for free.So you’re just rolling like the rest of us? You need to get a bit more diva-ish and get that black card?Yeah I know, I know, I need it. If I get it, I’ll let you know. That’s a promise. With this being our film issue and you being a judo champ, what’s your favourite fight scene?Drunken Master, I don’t know if a lot of people will know it, it’s a martial arts film with Jackie Chan. When his character got taught how to fight, he fought this guy that was basically kinda chubby and he just whooped his arse. So for me, it’s that fighting scene. What’s one role that you’d like to play in any film? The guy from Home Alone, the little guy, [Macaulay Culkin]. I was loving when they were all getting burnt and I’d love being a rebel child on my own. That would be me, definitely!On the flip side, be honest, when is the last time you cried at a film?I swear on my life I haven’t even cried at a film, the nearest would be probably The Colour Purple. I was in drama watching it when I was younger and so the closest to me crying was probably then. That was some strong, deep, sh*t.

“When we graduated from drama school, there was maybe a feeling between us that any sort of job was fortunate – not like we’re all street urchins,” Karla ex-plains of her foray into the unpredictable world of acting. Finding work hasn’t been a problem for the young actress though, who in 2012 took up roles in e4’s sci-fi drama Misfits, a Sky mini-series alongside Chloë Sevigny and murdering her own sis-ter in the BBC’s one-off Murder directed by Birger ‘The Killing’ Larsen. Preferring not to go down the whole method acting route Karla climbs out of characters by switching on the TV, “South Park is probably my favourite TV programme, I love it! It’s satirical, it’s topi-cal, I love that. I’ve got my TV on lockdown Tuesday nights now, Undateables, Supersize... and Utopia, Utopia is amaz-ing.” The sheer variety of roles under her belt ensures the comic fan showcases her skills at every opportunity and with the likes of Idris Elba, James McAvoy and our cover star currently being lapped up by Hollywood, we question the appeal of starring on the big screen stateside. “I’d

never say never, I’d love to try and give it a go but I also think there’s great work being made in the UK... that excites me.” Considering the starlet’s favourite films, Pan’s Labyrinth and Waltz With Bashir, it’s not hard to see exactly why she loves to play the darker, more expansive roles. “I love everything with a fantasy in it,” she says. “That’s what really happened with Misfits, I thought the superpowers were super fun.” When ‘Jess’ isn’t making the most of her x-ray vision she’s looking forward to what else underrated Brit actress Aisling Loftus has coming up. Playing almost always the troubled, angry, basically baddie in series including the springboard to stardom Skins and BBC’s The Hour alongside Dominic West - whom he looks up to amongst Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman - the complex characters allow Joe to exhibit his serious acting skills. Since playing the lead role in Revolver’s revenge thriller Offender last year, 2013 will see the Screen International Star of Tomorrow star in the Nick Horny adaptation A Long Way Down featuring Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots. “I remember I was singing [in the local community hall] when I was about 15 and Kelle Bryan (who was in Eternal) saw me and then put me on her books.” Naomi informs of how she started out. “The first audition I went for was for Disney’s Life Bites and I got it.” The Lord of the Rings fan soon got the bug and moved on to bigger things. “It was [amazing],” the hard-working 20 year-old quips of her 2010 project, the Steven Spielberg produced TV series, Terra Nova. “I think I took it in my stride. There was pressure in the beginning, I remember the day he was going to watch the [audition] tapes.” Recently back from auditions in LA, the arts and crafts enthusiast (“I was doing it before you called,” she laughed) is also embracing her musical side. “I’m currently writing on a piano and getting together songs. With just a few months to go before the release of his debut studio album, Blame Miss Barclay, James Humphrys sits down over a banana split with the 6’6”, Hackney-born wordsmith to find out how he’s planning to bring the Pane in 2013.

If there ever was a perfect pre-cursor to a breakout year in the music indus-try, the last 12 months or so may have been exactly that, as far as Mikill Pane’s concerned. “Every major thing that’s happened in my career hap-pened in 2012 and it was the inception of a lot of things,” he tells us of the past year as he mulls over taking another oversized spoonful of ice cream and whipped cream. “Completing my album, signing my publishing deal, going on high profile tours, bolstering my repu-tation, my life, it all happened in 2012.” With the release of The Morris Dancer and a spot of touring with Ed Sheeran and Rizzle Kicks, Uzomba capped off the year with the release of the Dirty Rider EP. “I was going to be gigging to like 55,000 people over the course of a month, so you might as well have something new for them to get their teeth into. Dirty Rider was perfect. We offloaded some of the songs that never made the LP. Not because of quality, but just because there was too many songs on the album.” As well as the infectious title track, the EP also featured a collabo-ration with the Rzzles, in the form of Work, “I was meant to collaborate with Rizzle Kicks on the You Guest It EP, but it didn’t happen,” he explains, “but Harley told me at V Festival that we were scheduled to be in the studio together, so when we got together, we made Work in a few hours. Then they went off to America, so, to shoot the video, I had to go to New York and meet them - that was a really cool experience.” After garnering a huge number of new fans thanks to his high profile touring pals and their subse-quent discovery of his back catalogue of work, the coming year, (and his first assault on the official album charts) promises to make for an inter-esting watch, but with a great amount of confidence in the album, charts are not something he’s planning to take much notice of. “I want an Ivan Novello and I want the Mercury Music Prize. Chart positions, if I do happen to get those, do not matter.” Almost eight years in the mak-ing, Pane’s debut album, on paper, should have everything it takes to at least lend itself as a contender in the running for the prizes, especially if the debut single Good Feeling is anything to go by. The promise of tracks which tell the stories of various characters,

a significant proportion of new and completely re-recorded material and a glaring lack of features, make this an ambitious first foray into the album world for a man with such expectancy on him to produce, but something he’s clearly factored in during production. “The album’s based around the story, so if I get a load of features and they don’t know anything about the f**king story, it’s nonsensical. I’m really excited about the album and the fact that it’s just me. If there’s anything that goes wrong, then I’m the only one to blame.” Not the only one to ‘blame’ if you’d believe the album title, Miss Barclay is, as well. “(She was) My English teacher. She’s the one that told me to carry on writing creatively no matter what I’m writing about,” he pauses to remove a cashew from his dessert. “No one has ever encouraged me as much as she did. It would be sick to have a photo of her on the album cover. We’ve already planned a photo shoot and stuff, so, she is the missing link.” Whether he will get his wish and get his former English teacher on the cover of his upcoming album, a couple of things are certain for Justin Smith Uzomba; with the support of Adam Coltman and Jake Gosling at Sticky Management, his career is in safe hands. He’s due for one of the busiest summers of festivals since his career began and he’ll continue to write the best captions on Instagram for as long as he (or the site) lives.

I was 11 when Titanic first came out, when there was no such thing as 12a (kids have it easy nowadays). It was just straight 12. You were either old enough to see the film or you weren’t, me being 11, I wasn’t... I remember my family wanting to go and see it, my Aunt telling my Mum it would be fine, and that I should come. When we were in the foyer of the cinema, the cinema manger came up to my Mum and asked how old I was? Now, at this point my Mum had to options 1) Lie and say I am 12. 2) Tell the truth and say I am 11. My mum did neither of those things, she froze... And then said, ‘He is 11, BUT he is nearly 12!’ My aunt gave my Mum a scowling look and the cinema manager informed us that Titanic was a 12 and not an ‘11 but nearly 12’ film and therefore I was not allowed in to see it!

23 year-old Nicholas Hoult has come a long long way from being that scraggily little kid in About A Boy (“it’s like looking at a different person,” he insists). His role as Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: First Class – alongside James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender – started a real transition. On/off relationships with co-stars (he stayed very “coy” on ex Jennifer Lawrence aka Mystique), playing the lead in Warner Bros.’s Jack the Giant Slayer, and listing Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean as recent favourite albums set him in a different light. Stood in the 5 star archway of room 108 of Claridge’s – an unnecessarily posh hotel in the heart of Mayfair – is a taller than expected Nicholas Hoult; noticeably more grown than “Tony Stonem” from Skins and “Blake” from Kidulthood anyway. On first impression he mirrors the demeanour of Hank McCoy from director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class than any other recent parts, especially “R”, the brain-craving, red hoodie wearing zombie from Warm Bodies. His manner: relaxed. His attire: smart/casual. His drink: bottled water. Very much like the characters Hoult plays on the big screen, there seems to be a lot more beneath the surface. After a brief chat about his BAFTA appearance (“Fresh?!?! You know what I wasn’t fresh at all. I’ve been filming in Africa so I got back that day, changed quickly and was very nervous for some reason”), he soon breaks down his cinema CV and reveals more about forthcoming films, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Mad Max: Fury Road...

ON THE UK TAKEOVER OF HOLLYWOODRecently speaking with Mark Walhberg about the Tom Hardys and Christian Bales of this world taking over Hollywood, he said there’s room for everyone. What do you think about UK acts taking over Hollywood? Taking jobs off of Americans... I think over there they think we’re all classically trained. I’m not but if you want to make false assumptions of me and think I’m better than I am, then go for it. I can have a fake American accent to try and get some jobs.There are quite a few...I think it’s great. There’s a real work aspect with UK actors. We care about the work. Sometimes in the States there are lots of talent people that care but there is also a culture of people who aren’t that interested in the acting but more with everything that comes with it.

We’re there to work...Yeah, we go over there, work and come back.Where are you based?I’m still here but I haven’t been here for a while. I was shooting [the new] Mad Max [alongside Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, out 2014] for seven months last year, then I came back here and now I’m back there again [shooting Young Ones]. I’ve spent more time in Africa than I have in England. They have Nando’s there by the way. Considering the last article I read in RWD was about Nando’s. I was in the tiny town in Namibia and they had a Nando’s and then where I’m filming now, Springbok in South Africa, they have a Nando’s.

ON HIS CHARACTERSWe want to talk about some of the amazing characters you’ve played. We’ve got to start with Marcus Brewer

from About A Boy, do you cringe at that? Or did it make you?No, I don’t cringe about that at all... I was very lucky to be cast in it.Even the hair?!?![Laughs] Maybe, maybe [laughs]... I do look back at some of the wardrobe and think ‘whoa... brave choice.’ I read in an interview about you saying you learned a lot with Skins...like what? How to muck about on set?It was a close-knit cast; I’m still friends with them. We had a lot of fun making it, it was hard work, we shot quickly but the writing... the writing was great on that show. It was nice to be in a young cast just messing around with the characters.And ‘Beast’ from X-Men. That must have come with a lot of hype...Yeah, there was pressure [referring to the millions of comic geeks that were pleased when Hoult was announced as ‘Beast’]. Cos there is so much history to it – I mean I grew up watching the cartoons. That was how I prepared; reading the comics, watching a cartoon every day, watching the X-Men films. You want to do it justice obviously, for all of the fans, it’s a great role. I think the film turned out really well. We’re gonna do another one this year with Bryan – who directed ...the Giant Slayer - which is good cos I get along well with him. I think he’s a really good director and he knows how to merge a lot of elements on screen and make a good story that is entertaining.Did you learn anything from the cast? From James McAvoy...I’m friends with those guys. The brilliant thing about Fassbender, McAvoy and those guys, they were so relaxed on set. I found that with a lot of the big actors I’ve worked turn it on and do a great scene. Which is fantastic to see.What about ‘R’ from Warm Bodies, we went to see that, going in with mixed feelings but gave it a good review.Thanks for giving it a good review. It was one of those things that I read the script and it made me laugh so.If you hold on, it’s in this issue, you can read it... [gives mag]...Ah yeah we got, four out of five, OK [Reads review out loud] ‘When a romantic comedy drops into our Inbox it usually gets marked as spam [laughs], ‘zombie’, me... ‘blah blah... classic genre is a nice idea... blah blah...’ [review gets a bit real with talk of it struggling to sort its genre]... oh, ah... ‘laugh out loud and

In terms of free time, now you’re newly single... [reports state he recently broke up with actress Jennifer Lawrence]? [Laughs].Are you single?[Shrugs, stays quiet, laughs]...What do you do in your free time? A lot of the time I just go back to my parents and catch up with friends and do the things you don’t get to do. Read, go to the cinema, play some computer games.Which games?A bit of Call of Duty, a bit of FIFA...Who do you support? I support Reading...Still in the Premiership... barely...Na, we’re gonna stay up. We’ve had a good run after Christmas [laughs].Do you play as Reading on FIFA?We mainly play on shuffle.What about music?Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, they’re really good albums. We think you’ll agree that all three of our limited edition covers are stupidly amazing. 27 year-old former RWD One to Watch star, Funny Tummy is behind them, he breaks down the creation...

We know Rihanna and Tinie Tempah are fans of your work, how does it feel to be recognised on that level? It’s a great feeling that people and brands [adidas] I’m a fan of appreciate my work as much as I appreciate the work they do.How did you make the cover artwork look so cool? The concept RWD and I agreed upon was to have one side of Nicholas as himself and another as a character he has previously played. With that cemented all that was left was the art and to add my signature style which then became the end result. As with everything I do, I didn’t want to make it just another portrait of an actor that any other artist could do. So with that said, I added a darker edge to the artwork by including the moody backdrop. The finishing touch was the painted RWD logo which is rarely done with magazine covers.Which is your favourite cover, ‘Beast’, ‘R’ or ‘Jack’? I’m not sure which one I prefer out of the three, so I would say all equally.What do you think of his films?I was a big fan of X-Men: First Class, as well as Kidulthood, the latter is a movie that never gets old to me. Jonathan Levine I think is a really good director – who did 50/50, The Wackness - we just had a looooad of fun on set. I didn’t have a lot of dialogue to learn, obviously.How do you get into the mind of a zombie? Watch zombie films?Just go really vacant.Sounds so hard, and you get paid?!?!Yeah [laughs]... this is not for me. I’d like to say that I went to some Buddhist retreat but I didn’t. It was actually hard cos you had to express yourself in all these different ways without your voice. It was a different kind of acting from what I was used to.And ‘Nux’, tell us a little bit about <Mad Max: Fury Road>, what was it like working with Tom Hardy and such and again that is a big film...I’m not the lead on that one, not that much pressure on me. I’m thrilled about

it you know Tom is a fantastic actor, also George Miller is a great director. He cares so much about that world and he’s created such an interesting concept, it’s a film and you just know you’ve seen nothing like it. The landscapes and the vehicles that they’ve built are amazing.

ON JACK AND SLAYINGTell us about ‘Jack’, how do you get into the mindset of a fairy tale and Jack the Giant Slayer, buying beans and all that...Ah Jack, he’s one of those characters that always means well but things always go well for him. At the start of the film he tries to defend the honour of the film and gets knocked out [laughs].You took that punch well by the way.[Laughs] Yeah, I’ve got to learn to play characters that hit people rather than get hit [laughs]. What was it like slaying that first giant?It was good fun. Obviously the character is scared of heights; he’s never really a hero, hero. He doesn’t have any super powers, he was suddenly – whilst terrified of heights – standing above a giant who is about to kill the princesses, and he’s just got to do it. [When I filmed it on green screen], it was kind of like being on a bucking bronco. It was great.You mentioned in a recent interview you thought the special effects were amazing. What was it like acting with CGI?It becomes very technical; it’s a different style of acting. You have to trust everyone around you. Bryan the director is very skilled at making that stuff work. I was lucky because there was such a good team. Although, 50% of the time you’re filming stuff and the giants aren’t there. I saw it in the cinema for the first time and I was wowed. Then you get Bill Nighy who played the lead giant – where they motion capture those performances – and they’re playing these giant personalities. They’re intelligent and fast and funny. It’s cool.Any film which has Ian McShane as king, you’ve got to support that.Yeah, you’ve got to; he was rocking out as king.

ON THE FUTURESo what is next for you, I’ve just read you’re doing Sebastian Faulks wartime novel Birdsong...Yeah there is that. I’m filming Young Ones now. Then I’ll be filming X-Men [at this point I whisper X-Men and do a little air fist pump]. We’re mixing with the old

your way?Ah man, I’d like to go in for it. I grew up loving the Bond films; I think there are such good characters in there. Yeah, I’d love that role. I’d play any spy. Very cool.Who’s been your favourite Bond?I think Pierce Brosnan was a really good Bond. Daniel Craig was great, there is

obviously Sean Connery, and Roger Moore was pretty funny...So you basically like all of them?No, not all of them, there are a few I didn’t mention. It will be good to see who they get next...[Whispering] Could be you?Not me, I’m too young.

How is it going today? Are you well?Yeah, I’m just getting started.So what would Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch be saying about your acting career?Ah, they’d probably be hating! What has been your favourite role over the years?Ah, you know what, I’ve had many great roles. I think it’d probably be my role in Ted or my upcoming movie Pain & Gain, where I play a crazed body builder.Was that fun? Did you get into that?Well, it was fun for a little while, and then it starts getting tiring when you have to keep doing it and to get as big as possible is a pain in the ass. The role

itself was just so fun to play; I mean the characters that we play aren’t the smartest guys in the world, they’re pretty damn crazy.You mentioned Ted, as well as Broken City it’s kind of rejuvenated your name. How was Ted career-wise?It was a phenomenon. It’s the biggest grossing movie I’ve been in in my whole career. Who would have known me and this little teddy bear...What did you think when you read Seth’s scripts?You know, when I heard the idea I didn’t get too excited – it just seemed silly, this guy and his teddy bear running around – but I was convinced to read

the scripts, I met with Seth and thought it would be funny. Now I’m getting a lot more offers for comedies and things like that.You’ve previously worked on The Other Guys, is that a direction you welcome?Yeah, I’ve always wanted to do comedy, it’s just about mixing up the right things; action and comedy. I want to do it all. Except for musicals.Ah man, you in a musical would be amazing! Seriously...[Laughs].We can see your name in lights.Na... [laughs].With Broken City how did you prepare to play ‘Billie Taggart’?

He created these well rounded characters that you usually don’t see in screenplays, so for me it was about preparing the film done independently and producing it. What would you have done in that situation if you were a private investigator?Well I just thank god that I wouldn’t find myself in that situation [room laughs]. Last time you had to investigate something, maybe you lost your keys or a pair of Jordans (noticing he has on Jordan 3s)?You know I’m investigating every day. So it could be something my assistant

has forgotten to do.[RWD turn around a see woman typing away on an iPad]... Not her!!! She is on top of it. Ah, she is the good one.Yeah! The real one is forgetful. From small details to something being forgotten or lost. It’s a big town and there is a lot of work for everybody.On radio you joked about reviving your music career, if you did what would your sound be like now? As a father have your music tastes changed? Would it be country and western?[Laughs] It will probably be old skool rock and roll. I can mix a little hip hop in there too.

In your down time we hear you like to chill at home, what sort of movies help you to unwind? It depends on what I’m feeling, what I’m in the mood for. I just saw Hitchcock, I don’t know how true it is but it was pretty insightful and I like Alfred Hitchcock. I remember this TV series [Alfred Hitchcock Presents] that used to come on and he’d be in it, so it was cool to see.What do you think about films like Django Unchained, etc. that are there to open up dialogue on touchy sub-

jects? It’s been going off...Oh yeah. D...Jango I thought it was about time there was a good movie about slavery times that could be made into an action movie. I thought it was a great movie.What’s your favourite scene from your favourite film?In Godfather II when Michael Corleone realises that his brother Fredo lied to him. When they in Cuba, Michael looks at him, looks at his betrayal and he kisses him [Fredo] and tells him that he knows... I forget the words he said.

We hear you are a big people watcher, who’s the last interesting person you came across?Speaking of movies, I see this lady, I was riding down the street and the way she was straight out of a horror movie. There’s an old movie called Suddenly, Last Summer, it’s black and white; I think Elizabeth Taylor is in the movie and it’s a thriller. I call it a thriller, some

great acting in it but she looked like this lady I saw in the street. She just looked like something out of a horror movie, she came running through the street and stood in the middle of the street and just had this crazy glaze in her eye. I don’t know why she did it but she didn’t hurt nobody and she didn’t hurt herself.

So, how is the Evolution Theory tour going? Any gossip?I’m ill, I’m the first to fall and then we’ll all go like dominoes but our first proper night off was in Glasgow because it’s been like gig, gig, gig and then a day off. So we thought, let’s let our hair down and we went into this club; the bits I remember (kind of) are Nick run-ning around with his trousers down and dancing with a disco ball, as you do. There was a rap battle between me and Tony which I lost terribly because I can’t rap at all and he knows that, so I

was defeated awfully. Then I remember ending up on the floor somewhere. I just remembered now, that I had a bat-tered Mars bar, OMG why did I do that? I pretty much did throw it up to be hon-est. The worst is when I woke up and smacked my head off the ceiling, so that was good, very immediate. Ha! So the tour is treating you well?It’s lots of fun on here, lots of jamming and making music and the boys are completely obsessed with FIFA, which I find quite boring, so I go in and try and distract them. It’s just not my game

he does, like in Django... that film is unbelievable, I watched that recently and it’s unreal, I would have probably gone for that, that’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a while. Tarantino must be a bit twisted, like when he went mental at Krishnan Guru-Murphy. ‘I’m shutting your a** down right now.’ WTF man, like this guy is properly twisted, so yeah, I lost trail of thought there but Tarantino is great!

What is your favourite film?My favourite film has got to be Friday. I love that film, man. That is a film I could watch over and over again. That and Scarface to be honest. Friday for comedy and Scarface cos it’s a big film. They’re like my two top films. They’re both big, what is your favourite scene from Scarface?One of the scenes in Scarface [that is memorable] is at the end when Tony Montana is all hype. He’s got his face on the table with all the drugs; it’s just the acting, the way he is at that point...

it’s just very on-point. I love that film.How many times would you say you’ve seen that film?I’ve probably watched that film about 10/11 times. And why Friday? What does that film mean to you?It’s a classic film. That’s where we got the idea for Anuvahood. I love the film so much, we always wanted to create something like that for the UK. universal. You could be in a Hackney council estate or South Central but you can relate to it. The banter and the comedy timing were great. Chris Tucker is a legend man. He is someone I’ve always looked up to. I wish he was in the other Fridays. What did you take from that film?I always thought, ‘Why can’t we do that here?’ Our banter might be different but we have a lot of comedy going on. I always dreamt of doing a UK version but didn’t think it was possible, but as time went by, it just felt right to do.

People are saying [Anuvahood] was very similar to Friday; we wanted it to be. We didn’t want to hideaway from that, as you can see there are Friday posters in my bedroom. What is that one scene that cracks you up?It has to be Chris Tucker with the date. That chick... when he’s like, ‘Don’t call me man... If you come out here, I’m not gonna call you man.’ That bit, I mean any scene with Chris Tucker kills me but that bit was big.

#OPPORTUNITIES, TOURING, QUALIFICATIONS, ESTABLISHED

For 30 years youth and com-munity music organisation CM has been throwing it down and making opportunities for people of all backgrounds. One of the success stories producer/remixer/live midi technician, Quintin Christian – currently on tour with Rudimental, Labrinth and Plan B – breaks down the importance of great facilities...

With over 80% of students going on to work within the music industry, the two-year Creative Music Production and Business Foundation Degree really sets you up. “I started at CM in 2009,” Quintin tells us moments before going on stage with our February cover stars, Rudimental. “It was recommended to me by a good friend and everything from the people to the facilities attracted me. Also, the teach-ers were great, really great.” A collaboration between CM, City Of Westminster College and the University of Westminster, their popular course is split over two years and ensures that key skills are instilled into each student. The first year is all about developing skills within the world of music production. Special attention is paid to getting familiar with the technical aspect of music, so much so, a room full of state-of-the-art equipment

makes a student feel right at home. Whilst the second year empowers CM attendees with industry applicable business and production skills, making them ready for the real world. At almost half the price of a normal degree, there’s no better way to enter the music industry. “The course has a good balance of the musical and the technical side of things – which a lot of these courses don’t have – as well as exploring other avenues. Right now, I’m into music for film and looking at different projects like that.” After taking to the course favourably, Quintin soon excelled to work with some of the biggest in the industry and he puts all his achievements down to CM. He puts it simply, “They really give you that special attention you need. They have it all.”

Crysis 3EAXbox 360, PS3, PCCrysis, emerges for a welcome third console (and fourth PC) outing as Prophet sets out to save the world, once again - except, this time, he’s carrying a massive bow and arrow. In addition, all of the gadgets and perks that wowed us in the first two games are back, and, most importantly, so is the upgrade that had everyone questioning why there wasn’t an option to have one in any game, ever: the cloak. Seriously, if Black Ops 2 can get away with ripping it off, surely FIFA could, too? On top of the old invisibility lark, there’s also a wider weapon inventory than ever before (did we mention bow and arrow?) and far more diverse multiplayer modes than there were in previous titles. And that’s about that; a new campaign, some new weapons and gadgets and a few new multiplayer modes. While The Prophet’s latest venture is not much of a shift forward from the last game, it is undoubtedly a refinement of the series.

Hardcore fans will inevita-bly bemoan the change of pace, but they won’t be able to deny that it’s bloody good fun.

Broken CityStudio CanalCert. 15 With a great cast; Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones and (the weird looking guy who was in Source Code, and played an American agent in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace) Jeffrey Wright, this redemption story sees ex-cop Billy Taggart (Wahlberg) take a few matters into his own hands. Now a private investigator, Taggart – whilst fighting a few debts/clients/bills of his own – finds himself doing all of power-hungry, Mayor Nicholas Hostetler’s (Crowe) dirty work. A few snaps here, car chases there and several story arches all intertwine to make writer Brian Tucker’s main character both a believable and enjoyable person to track over the 100-odd minutes. Just wish the others had more teeth.

Wreck It Ralph 3DDisneyCert. PG Why can’t we all be like Ralph? Wanting more from his disrup-tive 2D life of wrecking stuff, this loveable giant goes on a 3D adventure of game-jumping discovery. Loving the 80s and 90s game references and the voices of John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, this under-pushed comedy gets a 1UP from us. We expect a nicely-timed game spin-off any day now... or would that be weird/confusing/well thoughtout?
