What a relief it is to get back toWaimate after our travels andtribulations. Whilst Tania, Patrickand I had a blast on our journeys,we were ever so grateful to stepoff the plane in Christchurch.Even the drive home from there,after 15 hours flying wasfantastic. Our time in Thailandreinforced for us that we really dolive in an awesome little corner ofthe world, and the lifestyles thatmany of us enjoy in New Zealandare (by comparison to lots ofordinary folk in Thailand forexample) simply luxurious. Whatwe take for granted, or what wecomplain about, when we canthave or get it, some cant evendream of. We live in a countrywhere the unemployed, the sickand the elderly are rewarded forsimply being who and what theyare. In Thailand, there is no

unemployment benefit. Nobenefits at all actually. If youdont work, you dont get paid. Ifyou dont work, you dont eat. Ifyou cannot produce something tosell to someone else, then youwill not survive. There is no

pension, no sickness benefits andno choices apart from working.But among all of that hardshipand the harshness of life in acountry with no social supportnetworks or benefits, there is a

surprisingly strong pride andrespect and a distinct lack of classarrogance between most people.

Mathletics

Well done to David Xie forfinishing 65th in Canterbury in therecent 2-day NZ Maths

Challenge. This event is huge andinvolves nearly every school fromaround New Zealand. Of the 141schools in the Canterbury region,St Patricks finished 8th and thesenior room was the 9th best classin Canterbury. THAT is prettygood I reckon. I see that ournearest local competitor wasGlenavy School, finishing 15th

best school.The successes of our seniorstudents in various maths

competitions goes some waytowards validating the effort andsometime different approach thatwe use to teach mathematics hereat St Patricks. Maths is fun andour students like learningmathematically. Its all a bitdifferent from how we learnedourselves, back in the day wheneverything was in black andwhite.

Mass

There is a whole-school ParishMass scheduled for Sunday the15th of September.All school students and theirimmediate families are expectedto attend. This is an obligationagreed to as part of enrolling at StPatricks School. All families areencouraged to invite theirextended whanau along as well,as Mass is an opportunity for theSchool to participate in the

Catholic Parish community andfor the wider Churchcommunity to interact with theschool and to gather and praytogether and to celebrate thecommonalities of ur ose.

We really are a lucky wee school,to have such caring andconscientious staff. Unlike some

bigger schools that have 10, 15, oreven 45 teachers. Surely theycouldnt have the same teamethos as our school. Surely theclass sizes must make a differencein a school that size. Imaginesending your wee darling(s) to aschool with 2500 students at it?

Not for me thanks.

Tekapo:

On the 6th of September, (in twoweeks) the whole school will beoff to Tekapo for a soak, skateand snowtube.This is an annual event which thekids really enjoy (even the bigadult kids) so please make timeif you can.As we do every year, we will betaking/relying on private vehiclesfor transport as the cost of a bus

for the day is prohibitive. It is abig day out, hence the reasonbehind choosing a Friday, as thisgives us all the weekend torecover.A notice will come home next

Thank Yous

St Patricks School has been on the receiving end of some generous donations frompeople in the Parish community and organisations that are involved with the school.

Firstly, a thank you to Father Brian, who through Hyundai South Canterbury secured StPatricks a donation of $500. Father Brian could have chosen any school in the SouthCanterbury district to award this money to, but saw St Patricks as the most deserving.

A big thank you also to Bill ODonnell for his ongoing time and effort he puts into thisschool. Bill chops firewood and then sells it out in the community. The money is thendonated to the school. We very much appreciate Bill and everything he does for our

school.

And lastly, thank you to Lee King and the staff at Sport South Canterbury. Lee visitedour school a couple of weeks ago and filled up our tennis ball bucket which has beenempty for a while. The students are loving being able to play tennis and other sportsagain.

Miniball

t Patricks School are officially the 2013 Junior and Senior Waimate Miniball Champions. Both miniballinals were amazing tightly contested epic battles, but in both instances, our teams showed spectacularepth of character, tenacity and teamwork to prevail over their opponents. In both games the opposition

were formidable and all credit to those teams as they really earned their way into the finals as well. Ourunior team was coached by Toni Oudemans and the Senior Team was coached by Jess Bailey and

Melissa Thomson. Thank you so very much for all of your efforts and contributions.Thank you to all of those students that played. So many of you have stepped up and showed leadership,

oise and skill. Many of you have come a long way since last year and are developing into excellent balllayers.

Congratulations to Keevah Donaldson, Morgan Oudemans and Blake Thomson for their selection to theWaimate (combined) Miniball team which will compete in the Timaru competition. Well done and wellarned.
