FREE INTERNET KIOSK FOR SENIORS One of Australia’s first broadband kiosks providing internet services for seniors was opened in Canowindra last Wednesday 13 October. The kiosk, which has two computers with broadband access, is hosted at Cabonne Council’s Home and Community Care service, as part of a $15 million Australian Government initiative. Cabonne’s HACC Co-ordinator Debbie Young said the aims were to help seniors in the community become better connected, enable them to discover new social experiences on the web and stay in touch online with family and friends. Ms Young said training and support will be offered to those who are new to computers and the internet. “The new seniors kiosk will be a great opportunity for older members of our community and we are looking forward to it being used on a long-term basis,” she said. The Government has formed partnerships with NEC Australia, Adult Learning Australia, Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association and the University of the Third Age Online to roll out the initiative which will deliver more than 2,000 internet kiosks over the next two and a half years. Information on kiosk hours, training and session bookings can be obtained from the Home and Community on 02 6344 1199 or by emailing [email protected]

WOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS Member for Dubbo Dawn Fardell has encouraged women across the electorate to get their nominations in for the 2011 NSW Woman of the Year. The award is held to celebrate International Women’s Day celebrations in March, which will celebrate its centenary in 2011. “The NSW Woman of the Year Award acknowledges the outstanding contributions of women in NSW and the dedication they have for their communities," Ms Fardell said. “It recognises women who have motivated other women, made a difference for women in NSW, and demonstrated excellence in their field. “We all know someone who is making a difference in our community and now’s the time to nominate for this award. “I encourage local residents who know a woman who has contributed to the community to nominate them.” The winner of the 2011 Woman of the Year Award will be announced at the Premier’s Reception for International Women’s Day at Parliament House in the week beginning 7 March 2011. The winner will be presented with her award at this ceremony. For further information, including the application and nomination forms, visit www.women.nsw.gov.au

To the editor... I would like to thank the whole community for getting behind James Roberts and all of us. Not just with the fantastic support of the trivia Night but in the weeks following and still today. Sorry It has taken me so long to thank everyone but as you could imagine life is busy with all his continuing therapy and progress. But the gratitude and appreciation has always been in our minds and heart. I would like to make a special thank you to Bubbles McKenzie and his team for all the work they did to my house. It has made James’ life around the home a lot easier and safer. And who could forget Julie Fliedner and her family because without them the whole thing wouldn’t of gone ahead and I wouldn’t of been able to purchase some needed expensive items for James recovery. So a very big thank you to you to Jules. So an update on James; he is progressing well but still a long way to go. He now has some new words so everyone is not just mum now. Which is great to hear his voice, and his determination to get his thoughts across. Thankyou to everyone that still interested in his progress. Yours sincerely Kim Roberts
In conjunction with Carers Week this week (17-23 Oct), and as a mother of triplets with Muscular Dystrophy, I would like to express my gratitude for the support of certain stakeholders, councillors, health professionals, and our local MP Dawn Fardell, in regards to the proposal of a pedestrian crossing on Gaskill Street. Given that we depend on accessibility, the proposed crossing would mean a world of difference for our family and indeed others like us; the aged, mothers with prams and toddlers, the sick, the less agile on their feet. Being the carer of three little kids in power wheelchairs, it is a stressful occasion to guide them across the street on cue, let alone waiting for a traffic gap long enough to allow for them, with-out their darting out in front of vehicles, and then navigating the steep narrow ramps, which may or may not be blocked by a parked car! Surprisingly, I am aware that some in the community have their concerns regarding a proposed pedestrian crossing. Issues like car parking spaces and other logistics are valid queries though, and are discussions that need to be heard. I am also aware that a pedestrian crossing has been asked for on and off since the early 80s. Given all this, it was disappointing to learn that the recent traffic counter had been pulled up from the road during the night, before the RTA were able to collect enough data. But, in a major plus for accessibility, I would join with many others in expressing my heartfelt gratitude for the beautiful paths that have been put in on Ryall and Blatchford streets! Thank you so much. Jemimah Read

CARER INFORMATION DAY As part of 2010 National Carers Week 17 to 23 October, Canowindra Health Service invites all carers in the community to a free information day. A carer is any individual who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependencies, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail. If you would like to know more about being a carer, or need support, information and practical skills come to the Canowindra Community Health Centre at Ryall Street on Friday 29 October from 9:30am to 4pm. Respite care will be available for the day by phoning 1800 052 222, and if you need transport phone HACC on 1300 302 446. Information available will include: Centrelink financial assistance; Commonwealth Care & Respite; wound care; NSW Ambulance; stroke care; occupational therapy; home care services; Aged Care Assessment Team; Legal Aid; continence advisor; NSW Police Force; Cabonne Community Transport; social work; and the RTA. Carers Day is a day to reflect on the contribution of unpaid family carers in our community and to consider doing something in return for a carer they know. You may wish to take a carer out for a meal or an activity as being a carer is a 24/7 job. For further information please contact the Canowindra Health Centre on 02 6344 1314, light refreshments will be available.

Cooking Artichokes Slice off the tip of the artichoke and excess stem an inch from the base. Rinse the artichokes in running cold water. Pour enough water into a large pot to cover the artichokes, add a clove of garlic, a slice of lemon and a bay leaf. Cover, bring to boil and reduce heat to simmer for about 45 minutes or until the outer leaves can easily be pulled off. To eat: Drain and put into a bowl, whilst warm pull off outer petals one at a time, dip white fleshy end into some melted butter and lemon juice with freshly ground pepper. Tightly grip the other end of the petal. Place in mouth, dip side down, and pull through teeth to remove soft, pulpy, delicious portion of the petal. Discard remaining petal. Continue until all of the petals are removed. With a knife or spoon, scrape out and discard the inedible fuzzy choke covering the artichoke heart. Cut the heart into pieces and dip into sauce to eat.

Using a restraint correctly greatly increases your child’s safety during a crash.
INSPIRATIONAL The Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW) Central West members and guests enjoyed an excellent luncheon recently at Canowindra’s Old Vic Inn. Committee member and former teacher Pat Burnheim introduced her ’pupil’, guest speaker Christine McIntosh nee Lloyd. Christine was an outstanding student at Canowindra High and present at the luncheon were her former teachers Viv Meiklejohn, Pat Burnheim and Mim Loomes. After studying Arts/Law at ANU Christine has made her career in banking law and now occupies the position of Special Counsel of the International law firm, MALLESONS STEPHEN JAQUES. She acts for clients throughout Australia and in Asia, working remotely from her home near Molong. Christine spoke of some of the difficulties in combining family and professional life; the importance of appropriate mentor-ing in developing confidence in profes-sional life and the need for support net-works in both family and professional spheres. Christine emphasized the impor-tance of her professional networks in the pro bono work she had done with The Hub Action Group in its conflict with the Molong Waste Facility. Recently, Christine has concentrated on rewriting banking legal documents in plain English. This and her involvement in her husband’s rural property and most importantly being the mother of two teenage boys and a two year old daughter, gives her personal satisfaction. During the luncheon, President Alison Biddulph presented member Berna Wright with a beautiful bunch of flowers grown by Secretary Anne Holloway. This was in recognition for her long service and dedication to the Central West Branch. All members of the AFGW Branch wish Year 12 students good results in their HSC exams. Th e G roup w i l l b e a s k i n g successful female students to forward their ATAR to Mrs Jenny White, “Glenbrook” Showground Lane, Cowra 2794 before 31 January 2011. The top female student living within 100km of Cowra will receive the Higher School Certificate Scholarship of $1,000 presented at The Scholarship Dinner in Cowra in February 2011.
