(adaderana.lk) The cost of recruiting ahousemaid from Sri Lanka has crossed thebarrier of SR23,000 per visa during the past fivemonths making it the highest among allmanpower exporting countries, Makkah dailyreported on Tuesday quoting market sources.“This has surpassed the cost of recruitinghousemaids from the Philippines which used tobe SR19,000 per work visa,” said Yahya Al-Maqbool, chairman of the recruitment committeeof the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce andIndustry (JCCI).He said the cost of labor recruitment from SriLanka is going up while it is dropping to SR3,000and SR7,000 from countries like Sudan, Egyptand Bangladesh for recruitment of drivers.Maqbool attributed the huge cost difference to thegeographic distances because of the air ticketcharges and the complicated contractingprocedures in some of the manpower exportingcountries.“Some recruitment brokers exploit the Kingdom’sneed for housemaids so they tend to increasetheir charges,” he added.Maqbool said it is next to impossible to control

the recruitment costs taking into consideration thedifferent charges between recruitment officesthemselves which will have to return thehousemaid back home in case of a failedprobationary period.“This is an extra cost on the offices so theyincrease their charges to compensate whenanything like this happens,” he explained. The chairman said the hurdles put by somefavorable countries before recruitment of househelps, drive the others to up the charges of theirhousemaids.“When brokers in some exporting countries feelthat our recruitment offices are facing someproblems, they immediately increase theirrecruitment charges by at least $500 per visa,” hesaid.Maqbool recalled that recruitment from thePhilippines was the highest before it was knockedout by Sri Lanka.“This, however, does not mean that housemaidsfrom Sri Lanka are the most favored or they aretoo much in demand but because of the currentdifficulties of importing house helps from theformer country,” he said, Saudi Gazette reports.

“Reveal Matale MassGraves DNAreports now”

(dailynews.lk) When former Sports Minister C.B.Ratnayake came out with the startling remarkthat Sri Lanka Cricket was the third most corruptinstitution in the country behind the Police andEducation Departments five years ago he wasnot far from wrong. The Minister claimed that he would reveal thefinancial irregularities and those behind it andthat he would replace the corrupt interimcommittee warning the officials that they couldend up in court if they are found guilty of anymisdeeds. The Minister’s sensational revelation not onlyattracted headlines but gave the cricketingfraternity who were looking for a change somehope that there would finally be a clean-up.But lo and behold 48 hours later, the Minister hadgone back on his words and appointed the samecricket officials he had earlier vilified. It seemed thatthe evil that was destroying cricket throughcorruption, abuse of power, and other misdeedscould not be easily crushed for they always gainthe backing to plunder the resources from thevery top.Present Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera willbe the cynosure of all eyes as he will be underpressure to act on the probe report submitted bya three-member investigation panel into theactivities of Sri Lanka

Thecontroversial stamp waslaunched to celebrate 60years of diplomaticrelations between SriLanka and Thailandduring PresidentMaithripala Sirisena’svisit to that country fromNovember 2. ThailandPost also issued twostamps the same dayusing designs similar tothe Sri Lankastamp. However, expertson stamps and national flag claim the depiction ofthe flag in these stamps is incorrect anddisrespectful.“In these stamps we see the Sri Lankan flag beingbent out of shape to make a zero in the 60. This isoutrageous. A national flag cannot be used thisway,” researcher Bede Nimal Perera said. He said

by twisting the flag, the designers had caused thebo-leaves to appear disproportionate. According tothe Code for the use of the National Flag, the SriLankan flag cannot be used as a festoon, rosette

or bunting or in any othermanner for decoration. The code also states thatthe National Flagdisplayed shouldconform to the Sri LankaStandard Specificationrelating to design, dimensions and colour.Mr. Perera said the flagsin the new stamps didnot conform to thesecriteria and were placedat the bottom of thestamp, instead of at the

top. Expressing his dismay over this issue, another expert, who wished to remain anonymous, said the twisting of the flag had taken away a keypart. The yellow border depicting harmony amongdifferent communities had been erased and thiswas disrespectful, he said.

Deputy Postmaster General W. A. G.Wickramasinghe said they had not receivedcomplaints about the stamps.

This important visit will raise thehopes of thousands of families of the disappearedthat with the UN’s help they mayfinally discover the fates andwhereabouts of their missingrelatives and have the opportunity topursue justice and reparation."All communities have experiencedenforced disappearances butvictims may not share a commonunderstanding of the problem or seek the samesolutions. With huge numbers of Sri Lankans insearch of truth, there are corresponding variationsin their opinions about accountability."WGEID should seek out and listen carefully to theviews of family members of the disappeared. Itshould acknowledge the significant challenges toaccountability that persist in Sri Lanka and clearlyarticulate its own limitations as well. TheGovernment of Sri Lanka should facilitate theseexchanges and direct all officials to cooperate fullywith the delegates, the AI statement said.It said: Tens of thousands of people in Sri Lankahave been forcibly disappeared. Sinhalese youth

suspected of links to the JVP were particulartargets in the late 1980s and early 1990s, andTamils were victimized throughout the course ofthe long armed conflict between governmentforces and the LTTE that finally ended in May2009. Muslims (both activists and prominentcommunity members) have also been suspectedvictims of enforced disappearances."Since the election of President Maithripala

Sirisena in January, Sri Lanka hasshown a new willingness toacknowledge past abuses andcommit to reforms."It made a number of otherimportant commitments to enactlegal and security sector reformsthat Amnesty International had long

recommended. These included promises to repealthe draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act andreplace it with legislation that meets internationalstandards; to review the cases of detainees heldfor long periods without charge or trial and ensurethe release of those without evidence againstthem; ensure effective witness protection; consultwith victims and families in the design of truth andjustice mechanisms; release reports of pastinquiries into alleged human rights violations; andextend invitations to UN Special Procedures.Amnesty International believes these to be vitalsteps to protect human rights and account for thepast," the statement added.

Express learns that the DefenceSecretary has advised the immigration authoritiesto review his case in the light of the objections.PJ is not liked by sections of Lankan Muslimsbecause he is campaigning against certain

popular practices which he considers un-Islamic.For example he is against worship of graves ofsaints (dargas). He expresses sharp views againstMuslim sects like the Ahmadiyas and Shias. His opponents allege that the Tamil NaduThowheed Jamath and Sri Lanka ThawheedJamaat have accepted crores of rupees fromSaudi Arabia for spreading Wahabi Islam. Othersaccuse him of criticising nearly a hundred Hadiths(sayings of Prophet Mohammad). But the Sri Lanka Thawheed Jamaat General

He asks whythe ACJU has never protestedagainst the arrival of non-Muslimpreachers or preachers from

various Muslim sects like the Ahmadiyas, Bohrasand Shias. Why target only PJ? And there are alsoMuslims who say that as Lanka is a democracywith freedom of expression, PJ should not bebarred. It is not clear as to which view has majoritysupport among Lankan Muslims, but what isundeniable is that some politically influentialpeople are against PJ and his brand of Islam.(Colombo Gazette)

Cricket probefrom P6Cricket during the past three years. Thisinvestigation was instigated by former SportsMinister Navin Dissanayake when he decided todissolve the elected body on the grounds ofcorruption and replace it with a nine-memberinterim committee headed by former Sri Lankacricketer Sidath Wettimuny. The main task of the probe committee was toinvestigate alleged corruption and abuse of powerand authority at Sri Lanka Cricket. The committeecomprising lawyers Ravi Algama, JaliyaBodinagoda and Waruna Mallawarachchi havecompleted their task and handed over the report toMinister Jayasekera. The report as usual got the necessary widepublicity that follows such investigations from themedia. It revealed that top cricket officials like theDharmadasa brothers Jayantha and Upali andNishantha Ranatunga had abused their positionsin office with deals that benefitted the respectivecompanies they worked for. The report also goesonto highlight abuse of power, corruption, high

handed acts and several other malpractices bypoliticians and administrators during the last threeyears. With the Sports Minister calling for elections to SriLanka Cricket on January 3 the former officialswho have been named in the report could becontenders for the top posts unless the Ministercan find a way to stop them. However at a recent function the Minister went onrecord to state the probe report had failed to findevidence or proof of any misdeeds and had notrecommended action against any former officialsof Sri Lanka Cricket.“We read all the ideas and recommendations ofthe appointed committee. Nine recommendationshave been made. But nowhere in those ninerecommendations does the report ask to initiatelegal proceedings against a person. The reportdoes not call for specific action, take actionagainst a particular person, or initiate a disciplinaryinquiry against a person. It does not present anyevidence specifically on any charge or allegation,”the Minister was quoted as saying.“As a responsible minister, I will ensure the findingof the real culprits and take legal action against

them without assassinating the characters ofothers. We know clearly that there were someproblems and irregularities. Some of thoseproblems were beyond the control of SLC.They were helpless sometimes.”With the Minister promising severalamendments to the Sports Law whichincludes lifting of the controversial four-yearrule that deprives an official from holdingposition after four years, virtually all pastofficials will be eligible to contest. After all the time and money spent in exposingthe offenders who had brought the good nameof Sri Lanka Cricket to disrepute in the eyes ofthe international cricket world, will the probebecome just another eyewash?

As with his previous musical concerts, aptlynamed Sarangee (I), (II) and (III), the latestSarangee (IV), held on Saturday 31st October2015, at the Archbishop Lanfranc Academy, turnedout to be a real Musical Extravaganza, obviouslythe culmination of meticulous planning andrehearsals conducted over many months. The Hallof the Academy, one of the largest in Croydon wasfull, by the time the curtains parted for the show tobegin.Jagath has been entertaining large gatherings ofSrilankan fans, over many years, singing popular, but rare Sinhalese songs of a particular genre, thelyrics of which were reputed to conjure up and

summon the nuances of typical Srilankan rusticlife, which many in the audience were familiar withand able to relate to. It was his baritone voice thatgave his singing that special edge and appeal. Italso earned him, the accolade from his fans, whofondly referred to him as 'our local Amaradeva',which meant that his voice was comparable to thevoice of the highly regarded Srilankan ClassicalMaestro, Pandit Amaradewa. The presence of resident Venerables of theThames Buddhist Vihara and Jagath's motherMrs. Indrani Peries, added a special dimension tothe show, which commenced after the lighting of

the traditional oil lamp, followed by anintroduction, from the very competent compereGayan Mahawathatha. Jagath sang with his usualpassion and charm, a total of 26 songs, that hehimself has selected and to the delight of theaudience, took the extra precaution to explain byway of a preamble to each song the backgrounddetails and why he selected them. Jagath wasably assisted by the popular Orchestra, “ExceedBand”, whose music not only enhanced theimpact but also added a joyful atmosphere.Jagath sang duets with Suramya croos and twodancing girls (Eresha Jayathillake and Sulochana

Gunasena) provided additional colour and style tothe overall performance. In the souvenir produced to mark the occasion,Jagath stated that Sarangee (1V) was a specialtribute and a concerted attempt to fulfil a requestmade by his mother, who was not in the best ofhealth, and also that his mother was theproducer. Special compliments were also paid tothe most talented Artists, his mentors the late H Hand Lanka Bandara. Many enjoyed the typicalSrilankan dinners made available by his wifeNishani Jayathillake, during the short interval. Itwas altogether an occasion to remember.

Three new Sinhala words have beenincorporated in the OED, writes Richard Boyle(sundaytimes.lk) Work on the third edition of theOxford English Dictionary (OED) has beenunderway since the turn of the century, but will notbe finished for another decade or two.It is likely to have a staggering 600,000 mainentries, double the numberof the second edition whichincluded over 200 words ofSri Lankan origin orassociation.A few years ago, malkoha,“flower cuckoo” in Sinhala, was added, a “glitteringenigmatic jewel in thecanopy” as this bird hasbeen described. Now three other wordshave been incorporated, adigar, aiya and aiyo.As the Sri Lankan Englishconsultant to the OED Ihave lobbied for theinclusion of adigar as thereare entries for both dissavaand ratemahatmaya.Regarding the etymology ofadigar the OED states:“Originally Portugueseadigar person in authority, governor, one of the chief ministers of the Kingdomof Kandy.Tamil atikari < Sanskrit adhikarin personpossessing authority, governor (to be placed at thehead, to be at the head, to superintend and partly

(with special reference to Kandy) Tamil atikaramchief minister of the Kingdom of Kandy. CompareSinhala adhikara.”The first sense of the word, now deemed historical,is defined thus: “In the (former) Kingdom of Kandyin Sri Lanka: (a title of) a chief minister and royaladviser. Subsequently (during British colonial rule):

an honorary title. The honorary office of First Adigarfell into abeyance upon the death ofthe most recent incumbent in 1963.”The illustrative quotations included inthe entry reveal that this word, likemany others, was first used in theEnglish language by Robert Knox inAn Historical Relation of Ceylon(1681): “There are two, who are thegreatest and highest Officers in theLand. They are called Adigars, I may termthem Chief Judges; under whom isthe Government of the Cities, andthe Countries also in the Vacancy ofother Governors.”This is of special concern to me asmy glossary Knox’s Words (2004) isnow incomplete. Another wordattributed to Knox, ambalama, is alsolikely to make its way into the thirdedition.A further illustrative quotation from

literature regarding the island is by James Cordinerfrom A Description of Ceylon (1807): “The secondAdigar, a man of integrity rare in the court ofCandy, was beheaded on account of hisattachment to the family of his late sovereign.”

Other quotations include: “Next in rank to theKandian Sovereign were the first, second and thirdAdigars, conjoint Prime Ministers, Commanders inChief, and Judges of the Appellate Court,” by A. M.Ferguson from Souvenirs in Ceylon (1869).Ponnambalam Ramanathan is quoted from Riotsand Martial Law in Ceylon in 1915 (1916): “In 1903the rank of Dissawe was conferred on him, and thestill higher rank of Adigar in 1906, while holding theoffice of Ratemahatmaya.”The most recent quotation is by NiraWickremasinghe from Sri Lanka and the ModernAge (2006). “Until 1818, when a Britishproclamation extended the privilege of having atiled house to a larger group than the adigars.”Sense 2 is defined: “Elsewhere in Sri Lanka and insouthern India: any of various ministers or officials;a headman or chief.”There are illustrative quotations from internationalsources but just one from the island’s literature, byH. W. Codrington from A Short History of Ceylon(1926): “Each Korale or division of a disavany wasunder an Adigar.”The entry for aiya provides the etymology: “Sinhalaayiya older brother, also used as form of addressfor an older male relative more generally < Tamilaiyan, ayya father, also used to modify the word for‘brother’ to convey the sense ‘elder’, and as arespectful form of address to male superiors moregenerally.”The definition: “In Sri Lanka: an older brother.Hence more generally: any older male relative oracquaintance. Frequently as a form of address. Also as a postmodifier with a proper noun.”It is satisfying that all four illustrative quotations arefrom Sri Lankan literature. The first to use the word

was Leonard Woolf in The Village in the Jungle(1913): “‘Will you sit down, aiya?’ said Babun.”Colvin de Silva writes in The Winds of Sinhala(1982): “‘Because it concerns aiya.’ Some of thesmirk left the Queen’s face. ‘What has our firstbornbeen up to?’”In Romesh Gunasekera’s Monkfish Moon (1992)can be found: “Call him, I said. Tell him Victor aiyahas come.”The most recent quotation is by SwarnaWickremeratne from Buddha in Sri Lanka:Remembered Yesterdays (2006): “In everyhousehold he was a bit of a heartthrob to thefemale servants, who gathered round to exchangesmall talk with ‘Martin aiya’ (brother Martin)”.The final word of the trio of OED newcomers, aiyo, has the simple etymology, “Sinhala ayiyo and itsprobable etymon (ii) Tamil aiyo, of imitative origin.”The definition: “In southern India and Sri Lanka, expressing distress, regret, or grief; ‘Oh no!’, ‘Ohdear!’”The first writer to use in the word in English wasLeonard Woolf in The Village in the Jungle (1913):“Aiyo! aiyo! My little Podi Sinho!”The next illustrative quotation is from then Ceylon’sFashion Panorama (1971): “‘Aiyo! it is our Kalu’they all cried.”And the most modern is by S. Manickavasagam inPower of Passion (2009): “Vijaya touched Rajam’sforehead and exclaimed, ‘Aiyo. She is running veryhigh temperature.’”I should add that the third edition is evolvingonline, and is unlikely to be published in a series ofvolumes, as was the second edition. The work, however, is unable to be viewed without asubscription.

The Miraculous PrayerDear Heart of Jesus, in the past

I have asked for many favours.

This time I ask you this special one

(mention favour).

Take it dear Heart of Jesus and

place it within your broken Heart

where your Father sees it. Then in

His merciful eyes it will become

your favour not mine. Amen.

Say this prayer for three days.

Promise publication and favour will

be granted.

Never known to fail.

9th Year Remembrances

Inventor LeonardGregson WirasinhaBorn 14/05/1930 with Jesus 07/11/2006

What would we give to clasp his hand,

His happy face to see,

To hear his voice, and see his smile

That meant so much to us.

**

The rolling stream of life rolls on.

But still the vacant chair

Recalls the love, the voice, the smile

Of the one who once sat there.

**

Nothing can ever take away

The love a heart holds dear.

Fond memories linger every day,

Remembrance keeps him near.

He had a nature we could not help loving,

And a heart that was purer than gold,

And to those who knew him and loved him

His memory will never grow cold.

Forever in our hearts and always in our thoughtsYour devoted Children Shanthini, Deepal,

Shevanthi, Ruani, Gihan, Ashley & Shenain

"All in allhe is a very good coach and a good human beingso we would like to have him around."In the absence of a batting coach Jayaratne tookon the role and did a fairly good job."He is specialised in that area working really hard

with the batters," said Mathews. The big change that Mathews sees from previousseries is that the batters have started to take onresponsibility."The way Kusal batted we want guys like him tograb the opportunity when they get a start.

Sri Lanka Cricket will refuse no-objectioncertificates to at least 16 centrally-contractedplayers seeking to take part in this year'sBangladesh Premier League, an SLC official hassaid. The board will instead insist that its cricketerstake part in the upcoming Premier Limited Overs(List A) tournament at home. Some of theplayers who have been bought by BPLfranchises may also be required for Sri Lanka'sTest tour of New Zealand, which begins inearly December. The BPL runs from November22 to December 15."The centrally-contracted players will not begiven permission, because there is a tour ofNew Zealand for which the players leave onNovember 27," SLC cricket operationsmanager Carlton Bernadus said. "The boardhas also taken a decision that all the centrally-contracted players who won't be on that tourshould stay back and play in the domestictournament, which begins on November 20th."The move is aimed to protect the quality of the

Premier LimitedOvers tournament, and to help ensureSri Lanka's clubshave their bestplayers availableto themthroughout theseason.BCB CEONizamuddinChowdhuryhowever said thatthey are confidentthe SLC will givethe NOCs. "Weare confident thatSLC will give theNOCs in the nextfew days," he toldESPNcricinfo on

Monday evening. The BPL has requested no-objectioncertificates for 25 Sri Lankan players, but out ofthose, 17 - including the likes of LahiruThirimanne and Sachithra Senanayake - havecentral contracts."Where there are no contracts, players can getpermission from their clubs," Bernardus said."For example, Dilshan Munaweera is not acontracted player, and the Bloomfield CCpresident has given him permission - that isfine."SLC has focused on raising the quality of itsdomestic cricket this year, and has increasedmatch fees for domestic games in an attemptto make cricket a more stable source ofincome for players. With a zonal tournamentalso in the works for the upcoming season, domestic cricketers' earning potential has beensignificantly improved."The board has invested in the players,"Bernardus said. "They have enhanced the feesto 7000 rupees per match day. If our domesticcricket is not played properly, where are wegoing?"Jeevan Mendis has received specialpermission from Tamil Union Cricket Club toplay in the BPL, but the national selectors,

acting on behalf of the board, may still deny himthe no-objection certificate, Bernardus said.Mendis is among the 17 centrally-contractedplayers.(espncricinfo)

(dailynews.lk) World champions Sri Lanka'spower batting proved too much for West Indiesto digest as they succumbed to a 30-run loss inthe first Twenty20 international played atPallekele Stadium.Invited to bat first after the start was delayed byrain Sri Lankan batsmen pummeled the haplessWest Indies bowlers to record their highest totalagainst them and at Pallekele reaching animposing 215-3.The West Indiesreply was peggedback by the earlyloss of JohnsonCharles for a secondball duck, anddespite some stronghitting from AndreFletcher (57),Dwayne Bravo (24)and Kieron Pollard(26), they weredismissed for 185with a ball to spare. The asking rate for West Indies proved to beinsurmountable as the wickets kept tumbling atregular intervals, their best partnership was 51off 27 balls between Bravo and Pollard thatfollowed one of 48 off 19 balls between Fletcherand Russell. Despite getting some stick spinnersSachitra Senanayake and Milinda Siriwardanaput up a brave front and were duly rewarded.Off-spinner Senanayake conceded five sixes butyet finished with his best figures in T20I - 4/46good enough to win him the Man of the Match

award and Siriwardana had two for 41.The crucial blow for Sri Lanka was struck byDushmantha Chameera who despite being hitfor three sixes got rid of the dangerous lookingAndre Fletcher bowled with a slow ball.Sri Lanka's innings was off to a flier with KusalPerera and Tillakaratne Dilshan putting on 91 off9.4 overs. Dilshan outpaced his young partnerracing to his tenth half-century and by doing so

becoming the firstSri Lankan batsmanto pass 1500 runs inthis format.Dilshan has seldomfailed at this venueand he again provedit by top scoring witha brisk 56 off 37balls.When West Indieswere desperatelylooking for abreakthrough KeironPollard obliged them

with two wickets off successive overs. He sent back Perera for a well struck 40 by aclever change of pace and bowled Dilshan witha slow ball as the batsman missed a reversesweep.Shehan Jayasuriya played a cameo knock of 36off 22 balls but the real impact to the innings wasgiven by Dinesh Chandimal (40 n.o.) and AngeloMathews (37 n.o.) whose unbroken partnershipof 60 off 22 balls saw Sri Lanka score a stunning84 runs off the last five overs.

(island.lk) Preparations for next year’s ICC WorldTwenty20 India 2016 continue as reigningchampion Sri Lanka goes head to head withformer winner West Indies in a two-match seriesat Pallekele on Monday. The India event will take place from 11 March to 3April and Sri Lanka will defend the title it won afterdefeating India by six wickets in the final in Mirpurlast year. The West Indies had lifted the silverwarein Colombo, Sri Lanka, in October 2012 when itbeat the home side by six wickets. As many as 12 T20I matches will be played thismonth and the action will begin on Monday withSri Lanka’s number-one position on the ICC T20ITeam Rankings on the line when it takes on third-ranked West Indies.Sri Lanka leads the West Indies by eight points butif the West Indies wins both the matches, then

both sides will swap places. In this scenario, theWest Indies will rise to 123 points, two pointsahead of second-ranked Pakistan, while Sri Lankawill slip to 118 points, three points behind Pakistanand one ahead of fourth-ranked Australia. If the series is tied at one-all, Sri Lanka will retainits top spot but the West Indies will join Australiaon 118 points and because it will be ahead ofAustralia when the ratings are calculated beyondthe decimal point, the West Indies will be rankedthird. In contrast, Sri Lanka will extend its advantageover Pakistan to 10 points and the West Indies willdrop to fifth on 113 points if the home side winsboth the matches. The Sri Lanka-West Indies series concludes on 12November but a day later, 10th-rankedBangladesh will square-off against 14th-rankedZimbabwe. A 2-0 win for Bangladesh will mean itwill open up a six-point advantage over 11th-ranked Hong Kong but a 1-1 series draw will meanBangladesh will fall behind Hong Kong and PapuaNew Guinea (PNG) at the 12th spot.
