Priyanka Chopra’s ambition! She grew up in an obscure town in UttarPradesh - the town o Bareilly. She grew up with an ambition. Who? Priyanka Chopra. Her ambition was to becomeMiss World. On the magic night o November 20th, 2000, beore a packed

stadium and with a thousand ashbulbsblinking, her ambition became a reality.

Tis shepherd boy’s ambitionHe grew up as a shepherd boy in thelittle-known town o ekoa, just outsideo Jerusalem. He too had an ambition, Ibelieve. Tat ambition, i it were put inPaul’s words, would be: “o preach the Good News about the true God Yahwehin places where He was not named!”

(Rom 15:20). He let ekoa and went tothe notorious town o Bethel in NorthCentral Israel to become a powerulpreacher-prophet to “do” his “dream” , toactivate his ambition!

Your ambition?  What about you? Do you have anambition? Do you have a dream? Onelie. Tat’s what we’ve got. What should

we do with it? What can we make with it? Ask Amos. Tis shepherd made his onelie count. Te call or him to become a preacher-prophet or Yahweh came romsix dierent directions as I see it. May Ishare them with you? Guess what - thechallenge or you to do something or

Jesus, in the one lie you have, couldcome rom those very same directions!

Te call rom GOD!

Barking at Bethel! Te town o Bethel. A town that was theepicenter o idol-worship. wo goldencal altars stood there. Tey stood therestubbornly or many years. Tey wererst set up by Jeroboam-I, the rstking o divided part o North Israel (I Kings 12). Tey were still standing when Jeroboam-II became the king. Between

Jeroboam-I and Jeroboam-IIthere were 12 kings  who ruled.None o them could topple thoseobnoxious, Yahweh-upsetting golden calves. Amos let his littlehometown o ekoa, traveled toBethel and barked God’s wordso judgment there. Te priest who

was in-charge o the idol worshipin Bethel, Amaziah, could notstand this. “Te land is not able tobear all his words,” he complainedto the king (Amos 7:10). And thenhe walks up to Amos and says,

“O seer, go, ee away to the lando Judah, and eat bread there, andprophesy there, but never againprophesy at Bethel, or it is theking’s sanctuary, and it is a temple o

the kingdom.” (Am 7:12-13). Fromthis request o Amaziah we learnmuch about the man.

Tis amazing act about Amaziah jumps out rom that demeaning demand o his: He was a priest inBethel so that at the end o the day he would make money to “eat bread”there. However, i Amos continued histirades against idol-worship, people

would not worship idols anymore atBethel and Amaziah would be bootedout o his business. o prevent thisrom happening, Amos better leaveBethel and go to ekoa so that hecould “eat bread” there - make a living there! Tis was Amaziah’s point here.

In a career just to ll your stomach?  What about you? Are you in a careerdoing some thing just to ‘make money’

to buy things to ll your stomach? Are you in a job just to help yourselvesmake some money to take care o those hunger pangs! Ten, you wouldresemble Amaziah! But then, I wantto resemble Amos!

Under Divine Dicates!  What was Amos’ reply to Amaziah’ssuggestion that he pack his bags and gohome?

Here it is: “I was no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser o  sycamore gs. But the Lord took me rom

ollowing the ock, and the Lord said tome, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ Now thereore hear the word o the Lord....” (Amos 7:14-15). Who drove Amos to takeup the job o being Yahweh’s spokesmanin Bethel? It was God Himsel. He wasnot doing it or the sake o loading hisdigestive system like Amaziah did his

job. Amos was under Divine Dictates todo it!

No need to look beyond God!  We must invest our one lie actively in theministry o sharing the Gospel, especially

with those who haven’t heard it, in theone lie we have. And we don’t need tolook beyond God or the invitation andmotivation to do the same. I it is His

will that all must be saved, should wenot run to the last man on planet earthand tell him about Jesus - the one Person

who can save that person (II Pet 3:9)?!

Your chie concern- What is it?

Feel the heart beat o God. You willdiscover that it is a missionary heartbeat! Tis is seen best in the Jonah story.

At the end o that story, God asks a penetrating question: “You pity the plant,

or which you did not labor, nor did youmake it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in whichthere are more than 120,000 persons whodo not know their right hand rom their

let, and also much cattle?” (Jonah 4:10-11). In other words, God’s question to Jonah was this: “Your concern is orthe wilting plant. My concern is orthe perishing planet!” What about you?

What concerns you the most? Tat youdo not drive a Mercedes Benz? Tat youdon’t own a bungalow? Tat your girlriend is not pretty as Deepika Padukone?

Will you make God’s concern as yourconcern?! Will you invest your one lie

in the propagation o the Gospel?Te call to become a communicator o  Yahweh’s ruths or his generation camerom another direction or Amos. Let’sdiscuss that next....

Te Call romGEHENNA!

Beore Israel ully burns....Gehenna is the strongest Bible word orhell. It was the Greek word that Jesusused to depict and describe hell. Yes, thecall to go bananas about telling othersabout Jesus in the one lie we have comesrom Gehenna also, as it comes romGod! Amos understood this. I graspthat when I read the ollowing words o

Amos: “I overthrew some o you, as whenGod overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and  you were as a burning stick plucked out o  the burning; yet you did not return to me,

“ declares the LORD (Amos 4:11). “Sodomand Gomorrah can be likened to a ully burnt stick; North Israel can be likened toa partially burnt stick. Beore North Israel

ully burn under the judgment o God, let me go and announce to them - they should repent!”  - Tis was the thought processin Amos’ mind which made him thrashshepherding and take-up preaching!

Te hell-heading 48,000! It is said that 48,000 people among those who have never heard o Jesusdie every day! Where do they go? oan eternal lie in horric hell. Can wesimply watch that happen, sucking ourthumbs? I all we do is to increase thetemperature o our church seats by justsitting on them Sunday ater Sunday,

without doing anything else or the Lord, more and more millions will go the place

with the highest temperature ever - hell,

the “lake o re that burns with sulur” (Rev 19:20). And God would hold ussquarely responsible or their lives and

blood (Ezek 3:17-19).

Te tale o two beggars! Te challenge to plunge into declarationo the Gospel comes rom hell. It comesrom a man who went to hell, rather. Ireer to the rich man who lived in thesame neighborhood as did Lazarus, thepoor man. I am talking about a story that

Jesus narrated in Luke 16 . While on theearth it was the turn o Lazarus to beg. Now, even as he languished in the heato hell, it was the turn o the Rich Manto beg. He says to Abraham who perhapslooked over him rom heaven: “I beg you,

ather, to send Lazarus to my ather’s house — or I have ve brothers — so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this

place o torment.” (Luke 16:27-28). Here

Te Days o Your Youth

What concerns you the most? Tat you donot drive a Mercedes Benz? Tat you don’t

own a bungalow? Tat your girl riend is not pretty as Deepika Padukone? Will

you make God’s concern as your concern?!

I all we do is to increase the temperature o our church seats by just sitting on them

Sunday ater Sunday, without doing anything else or the Lord, more and more millions will go the place with the highest temperature ever - hell, the “lake o re

that burns with sulur” (Rev 19:20).

was an appeal to commission Lazarusas a missionary. And this appeal, very surprisingly, comes rom hell. Did thatrequest all on your ears? Why don’t youunplug your cell phone headphone romyour ears so that you will be able to hearit?! Te rich man in hell was talking aboutve o his brothers who would share his

ate. But we are NO talking about justve brothers here. We are talking abouta larger group that will meet the sameate as that o the Rich Man. We aretalking about 1 billion Indians, who arein the real danger o going to everlasting hell without Jesus and the Gospel! Why not plunge your one lie into this noblerescue mission - that o saving soulsspeeding towards this sulur-drenched

scorching lake?

Tis Bihar Proessor made me think! Tese lines I read in a popular newsmagazine made me think. Tey wereabout a certain Zoology Proessor. A Zoology Proessor in the Patna University name Ravindra Kumar Sinha. Here they are: “Saving reshwater dolphins is lie

work or this Bihar Proessor. ‘I we donot act now, we’ll soon see them only inNational Geographic Channel!’ he says.”

Ater reading those lines I told mysel:“I I do not share the Gospel in some way or the other with my riends, I will seethem only in hell!”

What’s next? Te call to take up the jobo barking God’s judgment messages

to North Israel came rom yet anotherdirection or Amos. Let us return to thebook o Amos to gure that out....

Te Call rom GUS!

When my wie vomited! My wie and I got married on 9 July 2001. In December 2002 we were inmy hometown Vellore holidaying. Atthat time, my wie started vomiting.Expectations lled the air. Was shepregnant? Had I become a Dad? No.It was just a result o indigestion! Our

balloon o expectations, had burst! In February 2003 ater a preaching assignment in Hubli, we headed or Goa,the coastal town with some o the mostgorgeous beaches in the planet. When

we reached rivandrum (the place where we stayed in, then) ater our “un andeverything” trip in Goa, my wie startedvomiting again. Expectation rent theair again. Tis time it was not a case o alse alarm! Evan, my wie, was indeed

pregnant with Dale Nathan our son, thedoctor conrmed!

Te insuppressible urge  Amos too had a vomiting sensation. He expressed that experience in these

words: “Te lion has roared; who will not  ear? Te Lord God has spoken; who canbut prophesy?”  (Amos 3:8). Put in another

way, this is what Amos is saying: “Te

Lord God put in my gut a message. I cannot be normal unless I roar that message out loud and clear!” He was talking about a vomiting sensation in his gut to get thenews o judgment that the Assyrians

would attack the Northern Kingdomo Israel i they did not repent! Tisinsuppressible urge in his gut challenged

him to surrender his one lie to Yahwehor the preaching o his message!

What is your gut saying?  What about you? What is your gut saying? Is it saying, “You must do something orGod! You must do something or Jesus!”

What do you do ater such a compelling call rom within you? Do your ignore it?Don’t! For such holy desires are not givento us by the Devil. It is indeed given to usby our Maker. I say that because I haveread what Paul writes in Philippians 2:13:

“It is God who works in you to will and toact according to his good purpose” . Willyou also surrender your one lie to Jesusso that your lie will be used to spreadthe Good News, which is actually yourall-consuming desire right now?

Te lub-dub o your heart!  What motivated Nehemiah to kick hisresponsible Governmental Job with thePersian Government to give leadershipto morale-down team o returnees to

Jerusalem? Let’s us give the mike toNehemiah. Tis is what you would hear

I we do not act now, we’ll see Dolphins only in the National Geographic

Channel, says this Bihar Proessor. I we do not share the Gospel with our riends now, we’ ll see them only in eternal hell!

What about you? What is your gut saying?

What is the lub-dub o your

heart? Is it Jesus, Jesus, Jesus?

3

him say: “Te desire to quit Persianpolitics and do something or Yahwehcame rom within!” How do I say that?I can say that ater reading his wordsin Nehemiah 2:12  in the New Living ranslation: “I had not told anyoneabout the plans God put in my heart or

 Jerusalem!”

What is the lub-dub o your heart? Is it Jesus, Jesus, Jesus? Why don’t you thenlive out your one lie or Jesus so thatothers will also nd Him through you?

From what other directions did themotivation or Amos to give his one lie

Yahweh’s service come? Let us dig deepinto the book o Amos to nd out theanswers.

 A call rom the GRAVE!

Chilling, chilly-hot image!  Amos paints some grim, graveyardimages or us in the rst and secondchapters o his book - images that moveus and images that literally “moved”him rom being a g-picker in ekoa to a earless-preacher in Bethel (Fig-picking was one o the jobs that Amosalso did along with sheep-rearing whilehe was in his hometown, as we come

to know rom  Amos 7:14 ). Here is onesuch image: one brother chases anotherbrother with a sword ( Amos 1:11). I that

was not chilling and chilly-hot enoughhe talks about pregnant women being ripped open ( Amos 1:13).

Pregnant womenripped open!

Amos named Edom’s sin o chasing its

brother country Jacob with a sword inhis book ( Amos 1:11). Beore he did this,he was obviously deeply disturbed by

what he saw and wanted to something about it! Amos also pin-points the sin o

Ammon - that o ripping open pregnant women ( Amos 1:13). Here is what washappening in this case: the Ammonites,

who were relatives o Israel through Lot’srelationship with his own daughters,

were concerned that the population o

Israel was increasing a lot. So when they spotted a lady excepting they executedhere! How cruel! Amos did not merely put his chin on his cheek when he saw that and just chuckle, “How cruel!” only to carry on with his lie as i nothing hadhappened! Instead, Amos pro-actively responded to what he saw!

Arundhathi’s arresting lines! Gruesome, grave-populating events- they not only happen in the world o  Amos, they happen in your world as well, don’ they? Arundhathi Roy was talking about one such gruesome event in heressay, Democracy: Who is She whenShe is at Home? published in Outlook magazine (May 6, 2002). Here it is:

Last night a riend rom Baroda called. Weeping. It took her 15 minutes to tellme what the matter was. Only thatSayeeda, a riend o hers been caught by a mob. Only that her stomach had beenripped open and stued with burning rags. Only that ater she died, someonecarved OM on her orehead.

Driving the jeep o our lie  What eect did the above paragraph

have on you? Do you just read andmerely ip over the pages saying, “I’ mindeed saddened by what is happening! But these things happen - don’t they!”Horric events should motivate us topresent the Gospel to the people whoare at the receiving end o such cruelevents! Let’s lose our sleep over suchevents! Let’s weep or the pain-ravagedpeople aected by such events! Let’sdrive the jeep o our lie towards such

abbergasted olks so that we could healthe hurts in the heart with the healing balm called the Gospel!

What motivated Amos to give all hehad or the work o announcing God’s

 judgment?

message to the people o Bethel? Tere

are two more directions rom where thismission’s motivation comes or Amos.Let’s us talk about them.

Te call rom the GAP!

Historic Reversal! Bible scholars tell us that Amos speaksabout a historic reversal in his book.Scratching your head? You don’t haveto. Let me elaborate: the God who sent

locusts against Egypt, the country thatruled Israel once, will now send anotherarmy o locusts to attack Israel itsel ( Amos 4:9 ); the God who sent a deathangel who passed through the land o Egypt nishing o their rst born o theEgpytians, one ne day, long long ago,on behal o the Israelites, would, now, pass through the people o Israel with a view to nish them ( Amos 5:7; Exodus 12:12 ). Yes, it was true - a glaring gapexisted between the Israel o yesterday

and the Israel o Amos’ day. In other words, what was once happening to thepeople o Egypt as an evidence o God’s

wrath against it, was now happening toIsrael itsel! Tat was the extent to whichIsrael had gone away rom the LORD!

ata to ekoa - here’s why!  As Amos compared the grim present withthe glory days o the yesteryears, a deepdissatisaction descended upon him!Te glaring gap between heady past andheartrending present deeply bothered

Te Days o Your Youth

Amos also pin-points the sin o   Ammon - that o ripping open

 pregnant women (Amos 1:13).

Let’s drive the jeep o our lie towards such abbergasted olks .

him. He did not simply hope that things would get better through a naturalprocess like some olks in his time “whodid not grieve over ruin o Joseph” ( Am6:4-6 )! (By the way, Joseph was anothername or the Northern part o Israel, thepart o Israel Amos ministered to). A change would come, Amos desperately

hoped. And he would volunteer to beGod’s agent or that change! Tat is why he said “ata” to ekoa to take up God’s

 work in Bethel!

When Dhoni’s boys repeated history!

When the likes o Robin Uthappa, RohitSharma, Iran Pathan, R. P. Singh, M.S. Dhoni, Sreesanth, Yuvraj Singh were

born, they were told about glory dayso Indian cricket. Tey heard abouthow the gutsy Kapil Dev lead India toan improbable win over West Indiesin the World Cup at the Lords CricketGround in the year 1983, even thoughthey were bowled out or 183 in the nal.Tey read about how young Ravi Shastri won an Audi Car along with the title,

Champion o Champions, ollowing Indian’s sensational victory in the Bensonand Hedges World Championships o Cricket at Melbourne in the year 1985.

With this history still green in theirmemory, these young players went toplay rst edition o the wenty20 WorldCup in South Arica in the year 2007.Possessed by a never-say-die desire torepeat history, they brought home thewenty20 World Cup!

urn. urn back. And behold theglorious pages o Indian Missionhistory. You will read about how a 23year old German man (Zieganbalg)came to amil Nadu and translatedthe Bible into the amil language, theyear being 1706! You would read abouta Cambridge university student namedRagland who rode on his horse and eatout o his hat and preaching Christ inthe cracker town named Sivakasi - thetown my oreathers lived in! urn

back again. Look at what is happening in your world in this century: the crasscommercialization o the Christian

religion by ve star evangelists; deadpreachers, preaching dead sermons todead congregations; churches that boastabout its seating capacity without being bothered about its sending capacity! And

when you do, you will see the glaring gapbetween the awesome past and the awulpresent (unless you are stone blind!).

Tat very dierence should propel us toinvest the one lie we have or the Lordand His service!

We are almost done in this Amos study.Tere is still one more direction rom where the missionary challenge cameto Amos, compelling him to wear hisskating boots, pack his suitcase withhis Bible and slide down the road romekoa to Bethel!

Te call rom GRACES! Te Lalu o the Bible o call Amos the Lalu Prasad Yadav o the Bible - that is what I’m temptedto do when I read his book in theBible! Both Lalu and Amos hadsheep rearing backgrounds. Both areawesome communicators! Yes Amosis so very creative when it comes tocommunication o Yahweh’s truths

to his Bethel audience! For example,God told him, “Go tell the people that judgment is inescapable! You can put itin your own language and style!”

Tat night, I imagine, how Amos rackedhis brains and stroked his wits to comeup with an interesting orm o expressiono the same message God had given him.Tis is what he came up with: a story.

Te eye-popping Lion-

Bear-Snake Story! Shall I narrate that eye-popping story toyou: A man is running away rom a lion;he runs and runs; he turns back - now the lion is no where in sight; he catcheshis breath and breathes easy; that’s whenhe hears a bear howling; there is rush o adrenaline in his tired legs; he takes o again trying to escape the bear which

was not exactly trying to give him a bear

Possessed by a never-say-die desire torepeat history, they (Dhoni’s dudes)

brought home the wenty20 World Cup!

Both Lalu and Amos had sheeprearing backgrounds. Both are

awesome communicators!

urn. urn back. And behold the glorious  pages o Indian Mission history. You will

hug!; he runs and runs; he turns around- no bear in sight! I’m now sae, I amcocksure - he tells himsel; he is deadtired by now having run rom the lionand the bear; let me get some supportor these dear legs o mine that has run a marathon with a speed o a Carl Lewis!

He made speeches to his goats, till oneday….

Ater you have read this story you areprobably saying, “Where is that story

in the Book o Amos?” It is there in Amos 5:18-19 . What you read was my version o the same story. You see - Amos

had the God-given git o captivating communication. But guess what - healmost did not use it or the Lord

who gave it to him in the rst place.Conused? Don’t be. Here is how thatcould have happened: imagine i Amoshad stayed as a shepherd; the only speechhe would have given in such a setting

would be to go “Dirrreaaaaaa; Come ongoaties! Let’s go!” day ater day! All Amos

did was to make speeches or his sheep!Tere was no scope at all or Amos toput to use his awesome God-given skillo communication by merely being a shepherd. I believe, one day, Amos toldhimsel, “I will go to a place where I canuse my God-given grace o speaking orHis glory! I will speak to another set o

sheep – the lost sheep (the people) o North Israel!” And that’s when he setout or Bethel rom ekoa! And so inthis way, the challenge to get involved inGod’s work came to Amos through hisown God-given graces!

Sensitive to your giting!  What are the skills the Lord has givenyou? And where are you working? Yourskills will drive you to the place God hasor you, i only you become sensitive tosense your giting like Amos. And pleaseor heaven’s sake, don’t tell me that youdon’t have any God-given gits. I you say that, you are a liar. God has given at leastone talent to each one o us, the Bibleteaches (Math 25:14-15). And in line

with those talents He has given us a task to execute His big Kingdom! Yes, Godhas assigned a responsibility to each oneo us in accordance to the ability he has

given to each one o us (See Rom 12:3-7)! A discovery o your talents and abilitiesshould lead you to the place where youcan execute the task and responsibilitiesGod has called you to do!

Amos used the one lie he had or theservice o Yahweh. He was sensitive todetect the calls that came to him romdierent directions daring him to dosomething or His God. What aboutyou? What will you do with the one lie

I wish we had a Christian V programtitled Enjoying Everyday Dying. Jesusater the miraculous eeding o 5000

says this to his disciples “I anyone wouldcome ater me, he must deny himsel andtake up his cross daily and ollow me. For

whoever wants to save his lie will lose it,but whoever loses his lie or me will saveit” (Luke 9:23,24).

Ater the eeding o the 5000 event, Jesushad risen to mercurial heights in thepopularity charts. Herod was wondering

who this is. Philosophers had ound theiranswer to problems. Te poor had oundtheir answer to hunger. Te sick linedup outside his cabin. More importantly Peter had ound the Messiah. It wasglorious. Te momentum had picked up

well. Te plot was set. One week romthen it was His transguration. Lookedlike he was poised to take over rom the

Romans. Tings are exciting. Yet at this juncture Jesus states this startling truth:Christianity is dying.

Te essence o Christian living is dying.I can imagine the aces o the disciplesaround Jesus when he said this or therst time. Tey should have been ushed

with shock. Teir smiles turned sour. Ican see the arching eyebrows o Jamesand John (because they wanted to sitbeside him in the Kingdom). Teirspirits sank. Te scene hasn’t changedmuch today. wo millenniums ater that

word was uttered by Lord Jesus, here weare, still indierent. Tough the rst

century church lived out Christianity orus. Tough the apostles lived it out orus (or rather died it out). And yet here

we are with raised eyebrows. Here weare mired in materialism, arrogant inour ambitions, preoccupied with petty things, content in our compromise, thriving in shallowness.

I wonder i today’s youth group in thechurch know this. When we speak intoday’s global conversations, it is all aboutambitions, aggression and attitude. Butlook at the words o Jesus that stands orages – “whoever loses his lie or me will save it” . I wonder i every new believer

who comes into the church knows whatChristianity is. With our toothless, truthless, sermons I wonder i they’llever know. God is looking out or mendead to everything else so that He couldlive in them. Te only way we couldexperience the power o resurrection isby dying.

Paul was an archetype Christian. Paullived it to the dot. Paul was the greatest o

the apostles. Most o the New estamentbooks bear his signature. A man totally sold out to God. A man dying daily  (I Cor 15:31). A man who was known inhell (Acts 19:15). A man who’d put today’ssuperstar evangelists to shame. Paul wasdead to everything else. He said he was‘crucied with Christ’ and he meant it.

No wonder the demons were araid o him. No wonder he was wanted in hell.No wonder there was this resurrectionpower about him.

Dying to Pedigree

When God crushed Paul’s blueprint Paul ater his amazing encounter withGod becomes a power-pu boy in the

Jesus gang. His enthusiasm could not becontained. He bafed his peers. Jews wereamazed taking into account his past. He

went about preaching in the synagogues. Most Jews knew him. He was one o their most learned scholars. He wasburning with the zeal to reach his peopleor Christ now. He had a pedigree with

which he could easily reach the Jews. Ater all he was o the tribe o Benjamin,a Hebrew o Hebrews, a scholar under

Gamaliel, a Pharisee o the highest order, had connections at the top places. Whatmore do you need to convince the Jews.No man t the ‘Apostle to the Jews’ tag better than Paul.

He even was known or persecuting thechurch and this could prove useul as henow preaches the same Christ. Hear itrom the man himsel - “Who has better credentials? Tey all know how obsessed I was with hunting out those who believed in

you, beating them up in the meeting places and throwing them in jail. And when your witness Stephen was murdered, I was right there, holding the coats o the murderers and cheering them on. And now they see me totally converted. What better qualicationcould I have?”  (Acts22:19,20 Te Message). But he was wrong. Ater hearing all this,God takes Paul’s blueprint and crushes it,puts it in the trash and says “You will be an apostle to the Gentiles”  (Acts22:18,19).

o the gentiles Paul was a nobody. o a gentile Paul’s learning under Gamalielamounted to nothing. Te gentiles didnot know Paul. God takes our pedigree, personality and all that we trust in,throws it into the trash then He cleansesus and uses us. He wants us dead. Later,in one o his letters Paul says what he

thinks o his pedigree. Hear it rom him“I consider them rubbish” (Phil3:8).

rying to t God in our plans? Most times we act like Paul. We make a plan based on our ideas and abilities thentry to t God in. We get impatient withour plans and ideas. It doesn’t work that

way. Paul had to crush that blueprintand dunk it into the trash can and callit rubbish. Christianity is dying to ourpedigree. Christianity is dying to ourpersonality. Christianity is when Christ

truly rules our lives. Christianity isChrist Magnied.

God is looking out or men who are willing to go beyond themselves. Beyondtheir pedigree and personality. God islooking or dead men that He’d live ‘in’them. God is looking or ownership andnot partnership (Ravenhill).

Christianity is death to sel. Christianity is God gloried. Young man, are you

preoccupied with your own plans? Areyou making plans based on your ideas?

Are you clutching that blueprint o yoursand trying to make a deal with God?Come a clean slate to God. Let him dothe planning. Earlier I used to say topeople ‘God loves great ideas, so bring him your ideas’. oday I say ‘God loves

great ideas and he loves it in the trash’.He loves us much more to leave us to ourown petty ideas.

Dying to Public OpinionGod’s training is reputation shattering!

We are so preoccupied with ourreputations that we miss God’s plan. I you want to ollow Christ and be Hisman, there is a cost to pay. Coming to Christ may shatter our reputationsocially and economically.

Te prophets o old are good examples.

Isaiah risked being considered a slave when he walked around naked or threeyears. He was asked to do that by God(Isa 20). Jeremiah wore a yoke on hisneck as his preaching accessories (Jer

27:2). Ezekiel was asked to cook his oodover human excrement (Eze 4:12). Teseguys wouldn’t bother what the worldthinks. Many a time God’s training isreputation shattering. Most o us don’t

want to be embarrassed (including me). Let’s take a lesson rom Paul. Tisman was ogged and beaten publicly several times. His own countrymenhounded him. His own church callshim unimpressive (2Cor 10:10). He

was always alsely accused. In all thisPaul never tried to sound politically

correct. He spoke with the same passionand persuasion to Kings as he spoke toothers.

Politically incorrect! Paul was not araid o public opinion. He did not bother whether he hurt thehigher authorities or not. He never triedto sound politically correct. He wouldshout right into the ace o his Jewishhearers “We had to speak the word o God to you rst. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy o eternal lie,we now turn to the Gentiles” (Acts 13:46).Tis boldness nearly cost him his lie a ew days later at Lystra (Acts14:19).

I you were made a ool…In Jerusalem when the crowd almostmobbed Paul ater some alse accusation, instead o deending himsel he witnessed

or Christ (Acts 22:1). Bad report wouldnot bother him. Public opinion couldn’tpush him o track. How angry we geti we are made to look like a ool or a moment. Yet we talk about God choosing the oolish o this world. Hypocrisy.

Spoke with same passion& persuasion! His audience did not make him changehis message. Be it a king or a kin, he spoke

with the same passion and persuasion. When he was addressing King Agrippa he did not try to sound polished. Hepreached Christ persuasively. Hear himanswer King Agrippa and the Romanocials “Short time or long—I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except

or these chains.” He had nothing to lose.He had no reputation to keep. He was

totally dead to public opinion. He wasutterly sold out to Christ.

Branded “unimpressive!” Look at what the Corinthians say abouthim in  2 Cor 10:10 “His letters are weighty and orceul, but in person he is

unimpressive and his speaking amounts tonothing.”  Te Corinthian Church thatPaul ounded called him unimpressive.Paul didn’t care one bit. Paul didn’t sulk and deend himsel. He addresses them

with even more gentleness (2 Cor 10:1,2).Tat’s dying to public opinion. Tat’sdying to rights. Tere’s a man utterly sold out to God. AW ozer says this –“Te man o God has nothing to protect, noambition to pursue and no enemy to ear.For that reason he is completely careless o  his standing among men.” C’mon brother, let’s see such ery preachers who’d notbother to be politically correct. Let’s seesuch dead men raise our dead churches.

When are we going to see such dead menstorm the political corridors o IndianChristendom!

Branded crazy! I you want to walk the paths o

mediocrity you can keep walking init. But i you want to walk at anotherlevel then be ready to get branded crazy.Get ready to get branded ‘holy’ by yourpeers. Paul was not normal. Paul was not

mediocre. o hell with our ways. Let’sgive in to God’s ways. We Christiansmarch to a dierent beat. We don’tmarch with the world. We don’t care

what the world will say. Let’s die to the world today. Let’s go to our own uneraltoday and say with Paul “..the world is crucied to me.”  Once a man goes on

the cross, he loses his rights. He losteverything. Tat’s Christianity.

Dying to Program

When its time to pack your bags! oday we are preoccupied with ourselvesand our programs. We are so intothinking o what we can do that we missout on what God can do. We are looking to impress people. We are looking orrecognition. Brother, i there is no re inyour preaching and i there’s no powerin your singing then it’s time you packedyour bags and waited upon God. God isnot interested in your program. God isinterested in the lost. God wants us todie to our pre-occupation with programand our organization’s agenda.

We pray or gadgets and power supply. Wepray or avourable weather conditions.

We pray or the musicians and preachers. But alas we take it or granted that God

will be there. No wonder our meetingshave good musicians and bigger crowdsand NO God.

11

We Christians march to a different beat.We don’t march with the world

Holy Spirit’s leading missing!  We are interested in establishing ourown organizations at the drop o a hat. We take great pains in building organizations at the expense o vision.

We make plans with the organization inmind. Holy Spirit’s leading is nowhere

in our agenda.Leonard Ravenhill always said “Noman can live beyond his vision” . Yes,look at John the Baptist. Ater 20 yearso training in the desert his ministry lasted about 6 months. He was the bestpreacher in town. He was the voice o God ater almost 400 years o silence.Crowds came rom all over the place tohear him. He even attracted the Pharisees

who were the spiritual superiors o the

time. Tey even wondered i he wasthe Christ. Did he try to set up anorganization? No, instead he introduced

Jesus to his disciples (Jn 1:37). Did hetry to establish his baptism? No, insteadhe spoke about Jesus’ baptism (Matt

3:11). He accomplished his mission (o introducing Jesus) and got out o the

way. Tat’s dying to program. Look athim say this in John 3:30, “He (Christ)must become greater; I must become less.”

Dead to everything? Paul says “ or me to live is Christ...”. Hisambition was Christ. He didn’t say it

was his ministry. Not even his writing career or his preaching. It was Christall the way. Here’s a man completely sold out. Dead to ambitions. Dead topopularity. Dead to everything. Giveme men today, surrendered such, and

we’ll set India on re. We ought to be

ashamed at ourselves. I am.

Dying to Loang  Around!

Coee shop carousing Vs tracts distribution! Our social lie gets a beating when wecome to Christ. It is dicult being God’sman. It’s not easy being His ambassador.

Weekends at the coee shop could bereplaced with tracts distribution. Ourlate night chatting will be cut becauseour schedule will accommodate early morning prayer.

Te burden or lost souls will drive usto your knees whenever we nd time. Our hobbies will take a hit. Our sleepgoes or a toss. Early morning Prayer

will take precedence over sleep. Our V time will disappear. I only God invadedour lives today. I only we could say withPaul “…the world has been crucied tome, and I to the world” (Gal 6:14).

An entry in Paul’s diary Look at Paul’s journal entry… “I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns

me that prison and hardships are acing me.” (Acts 20:23). It would have beena thing to peep into his social calendar.Tere would be no entertainment. Tere

would be no comortable stay. Tere would be no time-wasting or trivial andtrashy matters.

It was God all the way. It was Godevery moment. It was dying daily (I Cor 15:31). No wonder his riends desertedhim (2 im 1:15).

Awaiting danger could not stop himrom preaching. Agabus, the prophet atCaesarea tells him o the awaiting chainsin Jerusalem and the brothers beg himto change his plan (Acts 21:10-13). Hisanswer sends shivers down the corridorso hell “I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem or the name o the Lord Jesus.” Treat o lie couldn’tstop him because he’s already dead. Meno God are dead to everything else. Tey are o Paul’s ilk.

ake that rom ozer! Let me remind you Jesus’ words again“I anyone would come ater me, he must deny himsel and take up his cross daily and ollow me.”  A.W.ozer saysthis - “Te man with a cross no longer controls his own destiny. He lost control the moment he picked up the cross. Tat cross immediately became an all absorbing

interest and overwhelming intererence. No matter what he desires to do, there is only one thing he can do; that is, move ontoward the place o crucixion.”

Could not be kept down! Tis man Paul could not be kept down.

Beat him up publicly; it wouldn’t stophim rom preaching. Flog him severaltimes, you cannot break his spirit. Stonehim to death, you couldn’t keep himrom witnessing. Shipwrecks could notdouse the re. Prisons could not keephim rom praising. Bad report wouldnot push him o balance. Hunger couldnot shut him up. Pain could not dim hisvision. Betrayals could not wane thepassion. Nothing could keep him down. Not even death because he was already

dead. Tat’s Christian living.(Stephen Jothiraj is a young man who works or

Day one  We are where we are today, because theLord has placed us, with a plan or theeach o us. And as you know the Lord

doesn’t want us to be anxious abouttomorrow. One day at a time or Jesus !Tat’s how it should be.

SO lets talk business. Tis beautiul day, what do you plan to do or Jesus? in caseyou didn’t really plan ... Let me make iteasy. Pray that the Lord gives you theopportunity to share the GOOD NEWS

with at least ONE person. ODAY!

Get up on to your eet. NOW. Look around. And target someone that

you have a burden or. And then pray that Jesus will open a way or you tobreakthrough and let loose the Gospelon to that person. And beore evening you would have accomplished the task!

P.S. Please share your exploits with the team.By today’s evening.

Day twoI hope you all managed to share thegospel with at least one person yesterday.Let’s get geared up or today’s task.

Spot 5 o your colleagues, and pray orthem. Pray or them even as you work on desktop. Pray that the Lord will giveyou insight into their problems. Andour Lord is denitely able to lit themup. And even as you nish praying orthem, also gure out a way to share your

warm eelings or them. You could get‘em coee/water/stop by and say a warmHI/ or deliberately make ace contactand smile : ).

All the best to you, Christian.Praise report  :- ill about the last5 minutes o yesterday, I couldn’t sharethe gospel with anyone. But even as I

was walking I caught hold o one o the housekeeping guys and invited himto the youth service in our church. Teellow was really excited and said he’ddenitely come. Way to go .

Day three Tis is the day that the Lord has made..let us rejoice..

I hope we all could pray or ve o our

colleagues...

Got time or today’s task ? It’s simple. Yet it takes a certain amounto boldness. Te task is this-

In any o the conversations you have with your non-believer colleagues, try and speak the WORD. As in, quotea scripture that has the potential toencourage, inspire etc. We all know that

the WORD doesn’t come back empty.Let’s put that to practice NOW.

Now comes the crucial part. Even as youthink on the above lines, the devil willput several thoughts in to your mind. He’d say, “Come on, be real, how can

we quote a scripture in the middle o a conversation. It’s going to be so silly.

What is everyone going to think? Tey’dall start calling me a HOLY cow. Gimmea break!”

A quote rom the mouth o Priyamani,a amil actress making orays in theelugu movie industry made me gotongue-in-cheek. She reportedly saidaccording to Hyderabad imes, 24November 2007, “Glamour has beenan integral part o showbiz rom a

longtime and the whole debate aboutexposing and vulgarity is blown outo proportions. Tere are competentauthorities in place to monitor them.

As a matter o act, personally I amokay with exposing as long it is donein good taste!” For Priyamani and

many actresses o our generation, exposing may be okay. But how doesthe Prince o Peace, Jesus, view it?

Jesus recognized that it was God who gave us clothes to wear. He was underlining this truth when hequipped, “But i God so clothes thegrass o the eld, which today is aliveand tomorrow is thrown into theoven, will he not much more clothe

you, O you o little aith?” (Math6:30).

So wearing clothes are integral parto God’s plan or us. Removing them to expose ourselves in public,to earn a ew dollars more, isn’t.

Jesus, at a particular juncture during his ministry met a man who waspossessed with demons. Te Bibledescribes his dress-sense or us: Fora long time he had worn no clothes,

and he had not lived in a house butamong the tombs (Luke 8:27). Tereyou go - going without clothes, wasone mark o being inuenced by theDemons, i we read that verse withouta bias!

Right mind, right clothing!  We know what happened next. Jesusmet him. His lie changed. He took

a U-turn. And this is how the Bibledescribes the dramatic change in thisonce-demonized man: Ten people

went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and oundthe man rom whom the demonshad gone, sitting at the eet o Jesus,

clothed and in his right mind, andthey were araid (Luke 8:35). You can’tmiss it - according to this scripture, being clothed and being in the rightmind go together. Tose who decideto drop clothes - either partially orully - are not in the “right mind”according to this passage rom theBible!

Te larger story here cannot bemissed: a naked man starts wearing clothes ater having met Jesus! Onecan be certain about this: Jesus wouldnot wink at naked people or those

who enjoy ogling at them! Anotherstatement that Jesus made speaksvolumes about what he thought about

exposing. Here it is: I was nakedand you clothed me (Math 25:36). Yes, that’s right. On the nal day o  judgment Jesus will reward those whoclothed the naked, apart rom doing several other things. I this were true, the converse also must be true: he

will punish those who deliberately expose themselves along with thosethat deliberately enjoy that exposureas entertainment!

It is just a matter o aith. Ask the Lord tomake a way. And He will.

I remember the other day, my riend said“It’s so hopeless here. Tere is no uture atall”. I immediately reciprocated saying,“my God’s WORD says that He has plansto prosper us and to give us a uture anda hope”. You bet the guy was touched.

 All de best ~

Day our  What would you do or Jesus, today?

ime or task o the day .... am sorry itscoming ater lunch ... just thought the task might help us digest better...

Remember the guy, who keeps giving you

those deadly deadlines .. @#&*^... the sameguy who keeps coming in your dreams, nightmares rather, to scare the beans outo you... the guy whom you subconsciously hoped would leave the company ... the guy

whom no Hindi movie villain can replace…

I am talking about your boss, in caseyou already put on a temporary state o amnesia...

Te task is, PRAY or him ... pray your heartout ... lit him up to our Lord... his amily

and he ... pray that the Lord might bless himabundantly - that the Lord might grant himall the wisdom he needs, and to make a greatleader o him .. that his heart might be lled

with a whole lot o joy and peace that comesrom our Lord ...and above all pray that the

Joy o salvation might ll his heart ... himand his amily...!

Seems tough.. I know ... but let’s remember that “Jesus died

Creating anImpact or Jesus at GENPAC

Te story o Joshua Lakshmalla in his own words…..

My name is Joshua and I’m currently  working or GENPAC or the last 7years. It gives me great joy to share my testimony about how the Lord is using me at my work place.

Even as a child….I accepted Jesus as my personal Saviour

when I was a child and knew that Jesusis the only way to heaven. Tanks tomy parents who brought me up in theobedience, knowledge and ear o theLord. I used to attend Sunday schooland Vacation Bible School without ailas a kid. Tose classes had a great impacton my lie and my love or Jesus grew

with time. Since we were a Godly amily, prayer meetings, ellowship and worship

 were not new to us.

Praying in a posh ofce! In spite o knowing the Lord and his

word, I was just a nominal Christian oryears and was not at all serious about my relationship with the Lord. It so happenedduring my initial days at GE Capital, I

was introduced to a group named Young Proessionals Prayer Fellowship (YPPF).I was so much impressed by the young crowd who took time out to praise Jesusand worshipped him right there in theoce premises. I slowly started involving mysel and I saw a great change in me.Te love or Jesus which took a back seat

started to brighten up again. I started toclearly see and eel the Lord’s purpose inmy lie and that’s it, there was no turning back. I knew the Lord wanted me to be aneective person at my workplace, shining or His glory. I would be a part o prayermeets at oce and lead the group intoa time o prayer. We would meet nearthe parking lot or a quick time o prayeras we all had only 15mins breaks. Every time we moved buildings, we ensured

that we carried along this habit o our weekly prayer meets. We appointed new people to lead at dierent times. I praiseGod because o that obedience the Lordhas raised so many people at workplacenow, that you nd so many believersare meeting up at dierent timings anddierent places to praise the name o theLord. I praise God or using me as one o the many who laid the oundations.

Fatherless, at the age o 21 Jesus has always been my strong towerand shelter. Since I lost my ather whenI was 21, I had to take care o so many things and my wisdom was just nothing.Te Lord dealt with me and taught meso many things rom the word o Godand helped me balance my home andmy oce. He always protected merom evil and kept me unharmed. Tecall center terms and lie style was so

new to everyone. Night shits, accentsand work pressure were something that I was at ease with when rest o theolks would. Te love or Jesus was sohigh that I would stretch and organizeprayer meetings right inside corporatebuildings. I would minister to people via emails or would meet them in person andpray or them. Te Holy Spirit taught meto open up with people and meet them atthe point o their need or His glory. Te

Lord increased the git o service in meand I always end up running here andthere putting things together. I would

join with people with similar passionand burden to minister to people andI would help them in whatever way Icould. He slowly blessed me with many gits and one noticeable git is the git o

encouragement.

Promotion! Te Lord started promoting me step by step at the work place because o my littleaith. One specic instance I would liketo share is that o my promotion as an

Assistant Manager. I was on a client’sprogram and due or promotion in June2007. Tat one year was very crazy. Ihad stretched mysel to reach targetsand was not able to manage my time.I use to spend close to 12 – 14 hours a day and would end up going to oceeven on weekend’s to nish my work. I

just couldn’t share it with anyone at my oce about how loaded I was, but I keptmy aith. I was just claiming every singlepromise in the word o God and 1 verse

just stood out rom all. Philippians 1:6(…He who began a good work in you

will carry it on to completion..)

At the end o my tenure, I was surethat I will get promoted without any problem. But I kept hearing a lot romothers about their promotion being heldup or the span was increased as they could not clear their annual review. Tenal assessments are quiet stringent and

we would have people rom dierentdomain’s assessing us and checking ourpotential to manage teams. Te Lord’shand was so mighty on me that I did not

even have a review. I was just announcedthat I moved to an AM’s position withoutany problems exactly on the date that I

was due. I praise God or his awesomeavor and grace over my lie.

Never liked being idle! I have always tried to honor God with my

work. I never liked being idle and wouldinvolve mysel in a lot o things. Ever

since I was anointed in the Holy Spirit,my burden or my peers at the work place

just grew day by day. Te Lord helpedme to see beyond the normal sceneand allowed me to be his instrument. Isometimes ast and pray or my team andor certain peers at work place. Every timesomeone emails me or any clarication

on the word o God, I just jump intoaction without wasting any time by being there to clear any doubts that they have, even i it means that I have to go out o the way.

Starting our Weekend os with the Lord! It’s been almost 7 years now and I seethe Lord’s hand in my oce. Tere are

so many riends with similar passion andhe brought us all together or his glory.Since we were not getting enough timeat oce to be ministered to, we startedmeeting at our homes every Saturday morning or a time o worship and word.

Another reason or doing this was that we wanted to start our weekend os with theLord! So many homes were blessed andthe Lord used us to do it in spite o ourbusy schedules and roles.

He was always aithul  Yes, it’s not always that I was active andalert, but there were times when I wasunaithul and caught up with regularmundane things but He was alwaysaithul to me. He oten reminds meo my purpose and brings me back ontrack every time I slip. His very strengthallowed me to be part o many programsthat we conducted at our oce and at

various places sharing our burden o “Christ@work” concept and bringing young lives to the Lord’s kingdom. Westill meet at our homes and oer ourthanks and praise to the one and only deserving ather, Lord Jesus.

A beautiul journey Currently, I manage a team o 14 as anassistant manager and also play a very

important role or the Lord’s Kingdom. My DL has close to 600 people romacross various sites that are blessedeveryday with a promise rom the wordo God. I counsel and guide peoplebased on the word o the God and so arit’s been an absolute blessing. My walk

with the Lord is such a beautiul journey so ar that I have seen his hand on allronts – Spiritual, mental, physical, andnancial.

His Sweet Presence! I have so many wonderul brothers andsisters in Christ around me who alwaysencourage and strengthen me whenneeded. I encourage young people tomake a choice to walk in His ways and seethe dierence in their lives irrespective o

 wherever they are placed.

I love the Lord so very much and I wantto do great and mighty things according

to his perect plan and will. I enjoy my personal ellowship with the Lord whospeaks to me revealing so many greatinsights rom the word o God. I enjoy his sweet presence in my lie. My entirelie would not be enough to thank theLord or his goodness over my lie. I’mever so grateul or His love towards me.He brought so many wonderul menand women o God into my lie and I’velearnt so many things.

Everyday my prayer is that that I shouldnot step away rom His presence and thatI need to walk in His perect plan and bea blessing to many by carrying his Light.

Open your heart to Jesus and he will blessyou!!

Te word “women” and word “wow”oten go together. Shall I talk aboutthe two “wow” women who have a very special place in my heart – my wie andmy 3-month old daughter?

“How did you meet

your wife?”Oten times, young people and evensome pastors I get to speak to ask mehow I met my wie. I would considerthat very question a compliment. Well.

Well. Well. I met my wie Evan or therst time (as ar as my memory goes) at a camp meeting in Vellore called Ministry Eciency Program - Program or themissionaries o Blessing Youth Mission,

the year being 1987. I was 12 years oldand she 10. Both o our parents weremissionaries with Blessing Youth Mission.I distinctly remember how skinny andhow stunning she looked even at thattime! Another time I bumped into Evaneven beore I started thinking along thelines o being married to her was in theyear 1993 at the BYM Missionary KidsCamp at Sitteri Hills, amil Nadu.Evan had just nished her grade 12 and

was preparing or her Medical CollegeEntrance Examinations, then. I wasbathing in an open-air setting near a handpump along with a ew boys whenshe climbed uphill rom the Sitteri Busstop arriving late. I cut short my bath,

wrapped mysel around a towel and ranin! Tis super skinny boy did not have

an Arnold Schwarznegger body to show her, you see!

Butterflies in my stomach on seeing a

 pair of sandals!

Ater I nished my B. ech. AgriculturalEngineering rom Allahabad Agricultural

Institute in 1997, I briey worked atChennai. Evan, too was at Chennaithen, working in Madras MedicalMission – a amed heart hospital. Wemet at the English Students For Jesus(ESFJ) which met at the home o Mr. S.C. Vedasironmani, a home that almostkissed the Nungambakkam Railway Station. I recall how once I reached lateto the ESFJ meeting and saw a pair o ootwear outside Mr. Vedasironmani’s

home among a host o ootwear – a pairo ootwear I recognized to be Evan’s!I told mysel, “She is in there!” andhad butteries in my stomach! Aterone ESFJ meeting I distributed theMISSIONARY KIDS magazine withmy lead article, BEAING SEXUALEMPAIONS on it, resh rom the

press to those who were there. Again,Evan, was there to receive it! Little didI know then that she would be the

woman with whom I would have shortaccounts with in order to eectively beattemptation down the line!

The Guitar  Strumming Girl

 An important development then was

that I got to know about Evan’s ministry involvement. She did not go ballisticabout Blessing Youth Mission (BYM)– the ministry which my Dad, Mr. A.

 Jeyaraj co-ounded with Uncle Stanley,Uncle Lionel and others - as I did. Butshe did ministry unobtrusively in herstyle: strumming the guitar in theprayer cell at Working Women’s Hostel,Vepery, Chennai – a hostel that housedsome o most hip girls in Chennai;

Duke Jeyaraj talks about the two wow women o  his lie, his wie and his daughter!

taking interested girls to the churchshe attended, the Apostolic Christian

 Assembly(ACA).

She did not nod her head  to everything I said

I also recall how Evan did not simply nod her head to whatever I said– a quality about her that I secretly admired. When I made a negativeremark about a amous revival preacher

who let BYM to start his own ministry she was not pretty pleased and told methat she wasn’t in no uncertain terms!Te Prophet in her probably told herthen, that I too would do the samething one ne day! And you are right– that is what I did: ater working as a

traveling preacher and youth mag editorin Blessing Youth Mission or over threeyears, I let the organization to start thelittle ministry that publishes the mag you hold in your hand! When Evan toldme that she had committed her lie orthe ministry during one o the specialmeetings in Santhosha Vidhyalaya,Dhonavur, the School she studied inor the best part o her lie, since herparents were missionaries in Orissa, I

took special note, or, I was looking ora lie partner who had done that, muchbeore meeting me! On one occasion, she recited Isaiah 6, the great missionary challenge chapter, while walking downa road in Chennai with me! She hadlearnt by memory this passage and suchpassages as a kid! Here was a girl whohad the Word in her heart and slowly but surely winning a place in my heart! Here was a girl who had the qualities I

was looking or in a wie!

That Yellow Salwar! From June 1998 I was at Southern Asia Bible College, Bangalore, leading upto my M. Div. degree. I started getting proposals or marriage rom well-meaning amily and ministry riendsthrough my parents. It was at this timethat I rushed to the jungles opposite to

the Bible College and started praying about my lie partner very seriously. Atthe end o those seasons o supplicationGod wrote in my heart that Evan wasHis chosen girl or me! His “implanted

word” to me was that, Evan was the girlI had to marry, I was pretty sure (James 1:21). Beore knowing that, I made

doubly sure she ullled some o thecriterion I had or the girl I would marry:a believer, committed or the ministry beore having met me, part o the googlegeneration – the generation I was trying to reach, but outside my caste, a caste sonotorious in amil Nadu or marrying only within itsel! Te rst time I metEvan ater I knew I would marry her

was at Chennai Central Station. She wore a Yellow salwar and this ellow’s

heart skipped a beat!

The first time Evan heard me speak!

And to cut the long story short – wegot married at Gudiyattam on the 9tho July 2001 – in the presence o ourbeloved missionary parents along with800 people. “Evan is the greatest thing to have happened to me, apart rom the

Lord Jesus!” I told the wedding guestsin my speech – the rst she ever heardme make (Tat’s right, she never everheard me preach/speak in public, live, till then, though I had been preaching rom August 9, 1991 – 10 years back!Oh yes – she did listen to me on tape

when I sent her a recorded missionary challenge message o mine – a messageI preached rom Amos’ lie to the highschool kids o Santhosa Vidhyalaya, a message that is the lead article o this

particular issue o this magazine, during our days o courtship).

Bubbly Extrovert  Ater marriage we moved to New Delhi to work with the Assemblieso God there. I was the youth pastorcum Bible College eacher. Soon wehad modern youth coming up to usand opening their lives to us so that

we could counsel them rom the Bible. One reason why that happened wasthis: they saw Evan, a bubbly, extrovertnext to their thoughtul introvert youthpastor. Te rst ever youth camp, Evanand I addressed together was at theMark Buntain Memorial AG Churchat Kolkota in October 2001 - just three

months ater we got married. I stillremember how Evan’s moving solo, “Hetouched me!” touched the young peopleater my rst message in that youthcamp - a gospel message.

In New Delhi Evan started sharing theGospel with Auto Drivers. She pickedup Hindi just to be able to do this. Hertestimony about how she did it waspublished in the Blessing magazine.alking about magazines I must talk

about how Evan edits almost everything I have written in the 6-plus years o our marriage so that my writings willgraduate rom crass to crisp, elongatedto elegant.

Ater we joined Blessing Youth Missionollowing our one year stint with theDelhi Assemblies o God, the rst town

we preached in together was at Miraj,Maharashtra. It was a town in whicheven church-attending youth were

Duke with his son Dale.Evan was pregnant with Dale when

she preached in a Youth Camp.

dying o AIDS. And we were asked tospeak on subjects that were relevant.Evan’s salvation message with an AIDsbackdrop saw a lot o youth committheir lives to the Lord. One missionary aunty remarked that she preached betterthan me in that meeting. I could notbe prouder when I heard that because I

spent many hours coaching her on how to preach! Later on she stood beorea packed hall ull o youth o variouschurches in Kohlapur and taught themhow to choose their lie partner. Teyouth were all ears.

Pregnant and  preaching!

I also recall how we preached in tandemin Lady Doak College, Madurai; BishopHeber College, iruchy; ell Te World

Youth Camp, Siligury; Summer For Jesus Camp at New Lie AG Church,Secunderabad and New Lie Youth

Camp at FMC, Bangalore. Each timeEvan spoke the Lord opened the heartso the young people to grasp truth He

wanted them to hear rom the Word. When she preached to the youth o theMethodist Church in Hyderabad ata camp centre in Karigiri she was notonly pregnant with the Word o God,she was pregnant with our rst son, DaleNathan!

Her impact onGenpact youth

Her message “Sinking Ship Not Calleditanic” (on relationships) preached to500 youth o the New Lie AG Church,Secunderabad, was video-recorded. Tat

particular video was bought briskly inthe meetings we have addressed. OnceI was stopped by a young woman who

worked or Genpact in Hyderabad. Shestopped just to tell me, “I still rememberthe message your wie preached onrelationships in that youth camp. It wasa big blessing!”

Poetry for my wife  From time to time I write poems/short

prose to express my love or this great girlcalled Evan that God gave me. May Ishare one such poem I recently wrote:

Tank you, Evan, or sharing with me, your skin,

Tank you or pointing out in me, sin!

Tank you or paving the way or me to win,

Tank you or training me in matters like tomatoes, Face Creams and ‘Rin’!

And one time, I picked up my pen and wrote, “You are one Woman, I’ll gladly  walk lie’s road, even i that road is aslong as Nile!”

It is not that we never ght or havedisagreements. When we do, I tell Evanthat I would be her roommate even inHeaven and so she better put up withme!

Now, there is a new woman in my lie.

And that is my daughter Datasha. Whenshe smiles at me I am oating in thin air, mile high! I thank God or these two

women in my lie. I did not deservethem, yet the “Seed o the Woman” (thename or the Lord Jesus in the book o Genesis) gave them to me so graciously!

And I am so grateul to God.

Evan speaks at the October 2004 NLF Youth camp, FMC, Bangalore.

Te last our months the Lordblessed the programs we preached in,abundantly. Let me give you the details

o these programs so that you will gloriy God, who enabled us all o this, along  with us.

Blessed Baptist Youth Camp!

Brother Daniel M. who works withOperation Mobilization invited Duketo preach in a youth camp o the BaptistChurch at Birdy, a serene camp site outside

o Hyderabad in the month o January.60 youth attended. Duke’s salvationmessage based on King Manasseh’s liecut the hearts o the young people andmany gave their lives to the Lord in thealtar call that ollowed the message. Inthe other messages that Duke preachedthe youth were challenged or daily Bible Meditation, or consistent holy living by being regular and rigorousin temptation-beating, or active

witnessing and ministry-involvement.Te young people were richly blessedby the messages o Bro. Stephen David, the other speaker invited or the camp,as well. Duke also took the mike in thequestion-answer session and took timeout to counsel young people on a one-to-one basis. Loads o our literature – bothbooks and CDs – worth Rs. 1500 weresold in this camp

Young Leaders O Andhra Pradesh Challenged! In the same month (January), Dukepreached about 100 youth leaders hand-picked rom the Assemblies o Godchurches throughout Andhra Pradeshupon the invitation o Pastor Chaitanya Gera. Te Venue was the APAG BibleCollege campus at Miyapur. Since thetheme was the “Armour o God” or thecamp Duke elt lead to speak on the Day o the Lord urging the young people toget dressed or “that Day” – the Day o

the Jesus’ return! Te way Pastor MDV Prakash translated Duke’s messagethat day was simply terric. Te young leaders crowded the altar in repentance.Florussel Satya, an always-available G-4Mission Volunteer, who also works orGetty Images in Hyderabad, was thereto video-shoot that message.

Post Valentine day message On the post-Valentine Day Saturday,

February 16, Duke was invited by Pastor Younus Samuel, to preach over700 young people at the Youth AliveService o the New Lie Assemblies o God Church, Secunderabad. Dukebegan his talk, talking about a smartanswer US President Hopeul JohnMcCain gave to a tough question andthen went on to talk about questions-answers on marriage-romance. He basedhis message on the Isaac-Rebekah story

ound in Genesis 24. Te young peoplegiggled in glee when Duke joked andgroaned in repentance when Duke gavea salvation altar call.

Corporates taught about Integrity! Brother Mohan Patnaik, part o thesenior management team o UBS(Swiss Bank), invited Duke to share on

the subject o integrity at the Morphmeeting or Christians in the corporate

world on February 23. Duke’s message

was hungrily-received by the audiencethat had young corporate workersrom Google, Satyam, HSBC andOlive echnology. A powerul time o commitment ollowed the message!

Workshop on Women’s Day! I was honored to receive an invitationrom Te New Lie Assembly o God Church – the largest church inSecunderabad – to do a presentation or

singles during the special Women’ Day program on March 8, 2008. About 200young girls sat or my workshop. Many o them worked in top MNCs like Genpactand Satyam. When I went to the Lordin prayer, He guided me to speak on thetopic, “Single & Despondent to Single& Condent!” Te young people eagerly received several no-nonsense counselsrom God’s Word on practical problemsthey aced in their day to day lives: being

misunderstood at home, being harassedat workplace, being tempted when withriends, conused about lie partnerchoice. We received emails that toldus how much these young people wereblessed by that session.

Duke was invited by the youth o New Lie Assembly o God Church,Secunderabad, to speak in their day o asting on April 12. Duke challengedthem with a message that was titled,“Internet Inspiration or the InternetGeneration!” Several practical decisions

were taken at the end o that message

which was the most persuasive call thatDuke had ever made or prayer andintercession. One decision was to keepo rom the internet, television and oodor at least one ull day each week so thatone could pray with concentration andconsecration.

Sharing ruth in a Tanksgiving meet!

Ravi Alamothu, a manager with theCorporate Communications eam o HSBC, and the volunteer-designer o the mag you hold in your hand, invitedDuke to preach in a thanksgiving meet athis home at Dammaiguda, on the April13, 2008. Duke took that opportunity to present the Gospel to the well-wisherso his, both rom his neighborhood androm his company in his message that

was titled, “When Jesus Enters Your

Home”.

ogether to Gather! I strongly believe the Lord brought Dukeand I together in marriage so that wecould join together and gather souls orHim. We oten remind ourselves that weare together, to gather – souls! When we

went together to Maharashtra recently (April 17-19), upon the invitation o Bro.

Jeyaraj Barthlomew we saw that purposeo God uniting us being ullled. In a youth camp organized by the IndianEvangelical eam at Dapegoan weaddressed 200 people. While Dukepreached three messages, I got to preachtwo. In each session the presence o God was unmistakable. Our messages

were interpreted into Marathi. Severalyoung people gave their lives to theLord and were baptized in the Holy Spirit ollowing Duke’s messages titled,“Salvation Photos!” and “Good Ghost!”respectively. Tere were tears in the eyeso some. One CMC-trained doctor

who heard the messages said that shehad never heard such messages or thepast 40 years o her lie! My challengeto the young people on the topics o

relationships and witnessing touched theaudience and torched a burning zeal inthem to do something or the Lord. 17people lined up or Water Baptism by immersion ollowing the Camp. Te

worship lead by Pastor Kishore and his wie had the audience dancing in the joy o the Lord in this Camp.

Getting the Facebook Youth Hooked! One o the specic burdens the Lord hasgiven us is to get modern youth – theFacebook Generation as we label them –hooked to the Bible by making its messagerelevant to them. And what happens ona select Sunday evening, month atermonth, at the sprawling home o Danieland Magdalene, situated at the heart o Hyderabad, is one way that goal is being ullled in a small way. We see young people getting hooked the greatest book,

book by book, each month, there, asDuke leads them in an unique Biblestudy. In this interdenominational BibleStudy that draws about 15-20 peopleeach month Duke summarizes themessage o one chosen book o the Bibleand makes it lie-relevant using his ownacronym style. Padma Nela and anmay Nayak, two young olk thoroughly blessed by this Bible Study, brought intheir riend as well or this study so that

they too would be blessed. From January to April we studied the ollowing ourbooks o the Bible in our separate BibleStudies: Joel, Zephaniah, Obadiah andNahum. Each o those studies proved tobe an eye-opener. Familiar Bible truths

Ask and it shall be given He said,

So I did just that, knelt down and prayed,

Lord make me beautiul,

Tat people may be in awe o me everyday.

Yeah, I asked Te Greatest Beautician

Who covered the earth withits splendor and beauty,

and gave every color its identity,

Who set every eather on every bird,

Yes the one who made it all so awesome with just a word. He said its enough - aith

as li’ l as a seed to move mountains,

But I had more than that, aiththat made destinies rewritten,

I believed just a li’l while and I would become so lovely,

Every eye would look at me twice,

and every lip gasp at my breathtaking beauty.

Yeah, I believed in the work o this Beautician

Who makes black and white look so stunning on the night sky,

Who makes a tree look magnicent even when it is dry,

Who lls the air with water and calls it rain,

Yes, He who casts a spell o exquisiteness on everything intricate and plain.

When it was time I looked at mysel in dismay,

My reection was the same as it was that day,

His work had already begun,

How odd, I saw no change and He had said its done.

Yeah, Te Beautician opened my blind eyes then

When He whispered in His silent way

My thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways

Has not every word I said come to pass?

You asked and believed and so you have received,

Not beauty that will ade in time

But beauty that lasts or a lietime,

I removed your vanity so that youknow how it has always been,

rue beauty is what is elt and not what is seen,

Every tongue will appreciate truly, that, which love and respect induce,

Not envy as you secretly hoped  people would eel

when you asked me looks that morals reduce,

Your conceit I have replaced with humility,

Yes wrapped you in grace to

shine even in simplicity,With kindness I have sotened your voice,

So that all ears that nd your words hear My wisdom and My solace,

I removed your ugliness rom within and  lled you with the wonder o the cross,

Reect My love purely and your beauty will be unmatched in all the world across.

Tis is my Beautician, the best through all ages,

He works wonders even on orgotten passages,I you are being molded by His

hands let patience prevail,

Tis is the Greatest Beauticianwho never will ail.
