FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

If it weren't for the human trait to be able to invent and innovate, we'd

probably still be living in caves and hunting for food like pre-historic

man. Throughout history, human beings have been driven by a

desire to improve their quality of living. A drive that has resulted in

inventions right from the basic wheel to the space age devices we are

accustomed to today.

At Bajaj Electricals, innovation has similarly been a way of life. It is

possibly the single biggest factor in defining the company's

consistent success and progress.

Bajaj truly rides on innovation – often introducing to the country

pioneering technology and innovative products. Even the processes

that help us deliver these products and projects to clients are an

outcome of innovation.

Umbrella masts, monopoles, GRP structures, octagonal poles,

SCADA systems... they are all vast improvements on conventional

options, resulting in greater energy efficiency and more aesthetic

environments. Almost every E&P BU project uses products and

technologies that were never employed before anywhere in the

country – illumination of several sports stadia, modern cable-stay

bridges, monuments, theme parks and facilities like airports and

factories have been rendered world class by our pioneering ingenuity.

All of which have been showcased in this issue. We'd like to call it the

'Innovation Special'.

On a more traditional plane, we also wish every one of you and your

loved ones the choicest of season greetings as the year advances

through its most festive quarter.

Editorial Team

Dear EPDians,

As always, Diwali brought lots of light and happiness into

all our lives. But, it also provides the opportunity to

introspect the New Year that it has ushered in!

A turbulent market is the time to prove our real potential

and differentiate ourselves from our competition.

The road is always tough when there is a storm. The

optimistic way to perceive the situation is that there is

always sunshine after weathering a storm.

The B2B segment has experienced tough times these

past 24 months. But we are just around the corner from

being back in good shape with clear visibility to our goals

and overall gaps. We have learnt how to do things

differently and correctly too!

A healthy order book in hand and astute understanding of

projects and work at hand will help achieve goals for a

solid team. Project execution and handing over projects

on time is the critical success factor.

Seek Goddess Lakshmi's smiles on our company more

often to allow everyone to smile for eternity.

Wishing great endings to 2012 to make a solid start to the

New Year.

ANANT BAJAJ

Joint Managing Director

Dear EPDians,

We live in a world of continual change. New technologies

replace old; fresh thinking supplants yesterday’s ideas

and market shifts drive new approaches.

I recall a story about a man who was working on an oil

platform. He woke up one night from a loud explosion,

which suddenly set his entire oil platform on fire. In mere

moments, he was surrounded by flames. Through the

smoke and heat, he barely made his way out of the chaos

to the platform's edge. When he looked down over the

edge, all he could see were the dark, cold, foreboding

Atlantic waters.

As the fire approached him, the man had mere seconds to

react. He could stand on the platform and inevitably be

consumed by the burning flames. Or, he could plunge 30

meters into the freezing waters. The man was standing

upon a ‘burning platform’ and he needed to make a

choice.

He decided to jump. It was unexpected. In ordinary

circumstances, the man would never consider plunging

into icy waters. But these were not ordinary times – his

platform was on fire. The man survived the fall and the

waters. After he was rescued, he noted that a ‘burning

platform’ caused a radical change in his behaviour.

In the present market scenario, we too are standing on a

‘burning platform’ and must decide how we are going to

change ourselves.

We need to act now, be bold and more focused to face the

challenges ahead and bounce back once again as a

major contributor to the company’s profit.

Wishing you all Seasons Greetings.

LALIT MEHTA

Executive Director (B2B)

Dear EPDians,

Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship.

The act that endows resources with a new capacity to

create wealth.

With the speed of change that is taking place, only those

companies which continuously innovate will be there in

the future.

We need to continuously increase our R&D spend and

introduce newer products at more competitive prices so

that we continuously cannibalise our existing products

with new products.

It is better to be cannibalized by our own products than

have competitors doing so.

Let us hope FY 2013-14 is a turnaround year for E&P and

reinstalls E&P as the important contributor to the top line

and bottom line of the company.

I trust you and your family had a safe and green Diwali.

Seasons greetings!

Warm Regards,

SHEKHAR BAJAJ

GENERALLY SPEAKING

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF INNOVATION- By Milton Frank

Innovations... inventions... different by definition, but

similar in what they intend to achieve – bettering the

quality of life. Throughout history, and even today,

humans have been continuously inventing new

things. So, while for caveman the method of creating

fire, the wheel and farming were inventions; the

internet, space shuttles and plasma televisions are

modern inventions.

Everyone knows about the world’s greatest

inventions – be it Edison’s light bulb, Graham Bell’s

telephone, Guttenberg’s printing press or

Eastman’s film roll. The intention of this light-

reading article is to explore the more bizarre,

ridiculous and even downright useless inventions.

Don’t try and copy them though – most are already

patented.

IMAGINATION TAKES WING

Some of these may be ridiculous, but still very

practical. The idiom ‘Necessity is the mother of

invention’ rings true in the case of a frequent

flyer Irish engineer who, fed up of paying for

cabin baggage on budget airlines, invented a

heavy coat stitched with several pockets that could hold up to 15 kg of

items. Since budget airlines allow passengers to take a coat on board

free, his invention saves on every trip. And no sooner is he out of the

airport, the coat cleverly transforms into a carry bag. Ingenious... well,

until the airlines get wiser.

CRASH, BANG... Oooops

How about an invention that fits sensors on

your car’s bumper and hood which, in case of a

collision, predicts pretty accurately if whatever

you hit was a pedestrian or anything else. If only

the inventor spent a little more of that genius to

help prevent accidents in the first place.

SHUT UP AND DIET

This one is for all you food freaks who urgently need to diet but totally

lack the willpower: A dieter’s mouth cage that allows you to speak and

breathe but doesn’t allow you to eat even a morsel. The inventor
