REMEMBRANCE DAY
Rosemary is believed by many to have memory enhancing properties. For centuries it has been used in art and poetry as a symbol of remembrance. Australians continue this tradition by wearing sprigs of rosemary on Remembrance Day and Anzac Day as a way to commemorate those who have died in active service and other military operations.
Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year and marks the anniversary of the Armistice that brought an end to the First World War in 1918.
As the centenary of this Armistice draws near we commemorate this day of national reflection with a beautifully designed coloured $2 coin.

ARMISTICE: ONE HUNDRED YEARS ON
After two and a half years of bitter fighting on the battlefields of France and Belgium, Australian troops fought their last action of the war at Montbrehain on 6 October 1918. Within four short years the Australian Imperial Force had sustained more than 215 000 casualties, of which more than 60 000 died on active service.
The Armistice signed on 11 November 1918 was not a formal surrender, but marked a clear allied victory over a defeated Germany and effectively ended the First World War. To mark this significant moment in history these sets features an evocative $1 coin design with poppies blooming above buried cartridges.

MEET THE MINTIESN O O I N G B O J A N I C D I E P O L I S H E R
Nooing Bojanic started a career at the Royal Australian Mint on 15 December 1987. Initially packing and preparing coins for production, within a year Nooing had fallen in love with the coining process and was moved into highly detailed work within the Die Preparation team.
The Die Preparation team are at the forefront of creating proof coins for final production. The finish of proof coins will depend on the meticulous process which converts an ordinary die into a proof die. In order for this to happen a die is “sand blasted” with very fine zirconium beads to remove any imperfections, hand polished under a microscope and then masked leaving only the design. After polishing, the die is then chrome-plated to stand up to the pressure of the presses.
Having spent a lifetime taping, polishing and preparing dies for production, Nooing has developed a love for all coins and is particularly fond of the circulated 50c piece and the award winning 2012 Southern Sky coin. As an avid collector, coins are a labour of love and certainly a family affair, having both her brother and sister working at the Mint. With a career spanning 30 years, Nooing has enjoyed seeing all the new designs before they are coined and hopes that her work helps you enjoy each product a little more.
FROM THE VAULT2 0 0 7 R O Y A L 6 0 T H W E D D I N G A N N I V E R S A R Y C O I N
In 2007, a 50c uncirculated coin was produced by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 60th Wedding Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II married Prince Philip, who was a Royal Navy Lieutenant and a prince of Greece and Denmark, on 20 November 1947. The tradition of celebrating a 60th anniversary became popular after Queen Victoria celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1897. Queen Elizabeth carried on this tradition celebrating both her wedding and then her own diamond jubilee in June 2012.
The auspicious design by Stuart Devlin is said to capture this enduring partnership by showing a silhouette of the royal couple, surrounded by 60 royal trumpets and complete with a sparkling diamond to mark this event. Diamonds are said to represent eternal love and commitment, originating from the ancient Greek word ‘adamas’ which translates to unbreakable and untamed.
Stuart Devlin, goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, through his work, aimed to restore ‘richness and romance’ to peoples’ lives and what better way than to depict enduring relationship that spanned multiple wars, financial crisis and three generations.

CHANGES TO NEW YEAR EVENTSN E W Y E A R C E L E B R A T I O N S A T T H E M I N T
With a New Year comes a fresh new look and that is just what we are going to do with our New Year event celebrations at the Mint!
We have changed things up to create more opportunities for people to engage in the New Year celebrations with us.
New Year’s Eve – Last coin of the year
Similar to last year, we will hold a lucky door draw. However, this year we will actually draw the last ten customers to strike a coin. Each lucky winner will receive a certificate authenticating their last coin for 2017.
Ticketing closes: 3.25 pm Draw: 3.30 pm
New Year’s Day – First 100 by 9.30 am!
On 1 January 2018 the first 100 people at the Mint by 9.30 am will receive a ticket to go into the lucky draw to be the first person to strike a coin in 2018! Tickets will be drawn to declare all 100 places, receiving corresponding certificates authenticating their piece.
This change also means that the public will no longer be required to line up at the Mint overnight. In fact, due to concerns about health and safety issues, there is likely to be a ruling introduced which disallows people to line up at the Mint before 6 am on New Year’s Day. Please view ramint.gov.au for event terms and conditions.
