csIro’s Food and Nutritional sciences department at Werribee in Victoria will run another Approved Persons course for Thermal Processing of low-Acid Foods from 19–23 March.

offered by the only Australian quarantine and Inspection service (AqIs) approved provider in the Asia-Pacific region, this course will provide participants with the necessary skills to design a safe and commercially viable thermal schedule for the processing of low-acid food products in hermetically sealed packaging.

The course involves four days of lectures in thermal processing, practical heat penetration work, process calculations, tutorials and preparation for exams.

Two examinations will be given on the fifth day, which will cover theory and practical thermal calculations.

Participants who successfully pass the examination will be authorised to submit new thermal process schedules for approval by AqIs.

New Moro olive oil sprays now feature a flavourless, odourless, non-flammable and environmentally friendly propellant.

the new olive oil sprays – in aerosol cans made by ardagh group in Milperra, nsW – offer better value for consumers with each can containing 99.9 per cent olive oil, unlike competitor products that contain 20 per cent propane/butane propellant.

the variable nozzle allows the user to create droplets of olive oil, a steady stream or fanned spray mist, just by controlling the finger pressure.

Moro olive oil has been imported into australia from spain since 1960.

the olives are grown mostly in the cordoba and sevilla regions and are picked at optimum ripeness and then pressed soon after to retain the highest quality aroma and flavour.

the new Moro olive oil sprays are available in both extra virgin and extra light varieties and join the rest of the range of Moro olive oils and vinegars.

Food and grocery manufacturing costs in Australia increased by more than 18 per cent between 2008 and 2010, heavily impacting the industry’s profitability, growth and ability to innovate and create jobs, according to a competitiveness study by kPMg published in the Australian Food and grocery council’s (AFgc’s) state of the Industry 2011 report.

AFgc chief executive kate carnell said the main reasons for Australian food and grocery’s high manufacturing costs included the rising cost of labour, electricity, water,

land transport and government taxes and charges.

“The high Australian dollar is also making imported products cheaper, making it even harder for Australian-made brands we know and trust to compete on Australian supermarket shelves,” Ms carnell said.

“compounding the problem, major retailers coles and Woolworths are significantly increasing their private label brands and devoting more shelf-space to these products which are increasingly being sourced offshore due to lower production costs.”

UK-based food group Princes has relaunched its canned ham in new-style easy-open containers designed by the canmaking division of Ardagh Group.

consumers purchasing pear-shaped canned meat products within the Princes portfolio will benefit from a new ring pull opening device and aluminium packaging.

ardagh’s latest 325g and 454g ham cans, made in france, were last year recognised for their lightweight design and ease of opening with a gold prize in The Canmaker magazine’s cans of the year awards.

the ring pull aluminium cans were launched in the ham category to replace the traditional key opening following extensive research into consumer behaviour.

the new format, which has been test-marketed in europe and the us, is designed to be much quicker and convenient for consumers while remaining fully recyclable.

the ambient ham category has steadily grown over the last two years, with both round and pear- shaped products enjoying popularity with consumers.

“the ‘practicality’ factor of products has grown in importance with consumers so we’re improving the functionality of our product and clearly communicating it on-pack in order to drive sales,” Princes marketing director neil brownbill said.

Steel recycling rates in Europe increased to 72 per cent in 2009, up from 70 per cent in 2008, to maintain steel’s position as the most recycled packaging material.

the 2009 recycling figures were revealed at last year’s interpack trade fair in dusseldorf.

association of european Producers of steel for Packaging (aPeal) chairman hugo loudon said a 72 per cent recycling rate is extremely good when compared with

other packaging materials.germany recycled a

record volume of tinplate in 2010, according to packaging market research organisation gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung (gVM) in its annual report on packaging recycling, reported in The Canmaker.

of the 476,600 tons of tinplate used for packaging in germany 446,900 was recycled to set a record recycling rate of 93.8 per cent – beating the previous record of 93.6 per cent set in 2008.

the material covered all tinplate circulating in the system, including used packaging and process scrap generated by industry. for packaging steel collected from households – representing 84 per cent of the total – the recycling rate was 96.9 per cent.

chairman of the executive board of tinplate manufacturer Rasselstein, dr ulrich Roeske, said: “full recyclability without any deterioration in quality and ease of separation due to the magnetic properties

are characteristics which combine to make packaging steel the ultimate reuseable material.

“sustainability is right at the top of our agenda. one lever to further enhance our material’s sustainability is based on the successful, ongoing efforts to reduce sheet thicknesses – equivalent to the increase in material efficiency.

“the second lever to further enhance packaging steel sustainability is our

successful work to close and to safeguard the cycle of recovery.

“the 2010 unprecedented record recycling rate is proof of our industry’s successful contributions to the conservation of resources and to the reduction of the overall carbon emission of steel for packaging,” he said.
