CAREERS NEWS

The Careers Co-ordinators took a lovely group of Year 11 and 12 students to the Skills Show London 2015. This is London’s biggest jobs and careers event For 15 - 24 year olds and their families. The show was packed with over 200 exhibitors including top employers, colleges, training providers and advisers. The students had the opportunity to discover over 45,000 jobs, including Apprenticeships and try their hand at demos bringing the world of work to life. There was a wealth of independent careers information, advice and guidance.

The students were a credit to the school and all came out with bags of information and freebies!

Even Mrs Smith and Mrs Sumray got in on the act with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and the Army.

We hope that some of the exhibitors will

also come to our Careers Fair on 21st

January 2016, so those that did not

manage to go the exhibition will not

miss out.

Mrs Sumray & Mrs Smith

Ready Steady Cook Final

The final round of Ready Steady Cook took place last week with a team rep-resenting each house. Their brief was:

To design and make a 2 course meal (main course and starter) for 2 people for under £8. They were given 1 hour 15 minutes.

The starter had to be a sharing platter. The main course had to demonstrate at least 2 of the following skills: Rubbing in, rolling, shaping, layering, piping, whisking, blind baking. Both dishes had to consider our healthy school status.

The four teams worked extremely hard to produce their dishes, ensuring they were finished within the time! Of course the gas going out twice did not help this!!!

So what was made?

Mr Cohen & Bhayva Balia 7I (Omega): Caraway and sesame crackers with chicken liver pate for starter, followed by beef wellington with mashed potato and vegetables.

Mrs Page & Farisa Beheshti 7W (Sigma): For starters, hummus 3 ways with lemony guacamole, flatbread and carrot sticks. For main course they served spinach penne soufflé.

Ms Thorndyke & Waniya Zeeshan 7U (Alpha): Starter of chicken marinated 3 ways followed by salmon en-croute with boiled new potatoes and mange tout.

Ms Tricker & Rhiya Lall 10R (Kappa): Chipotle wings and homemade nachos with dips followed by cottage pie with sweet potato topping.

The presentation of dishes were professional and from the looks on the faces of the happy spectators, they tasted great as well. Ultimately though we could only have one winner and this was down to our lovely judges, Mr Dutch, Mr Quinn and Mrs Lall.

So this year’s winners were....... Mr Cohen & Bhaviya Balia representing Omega- a massive well done to them and all the contestants for taking part today and throughout this year’s competition. An excellent turn out as a whole with almost 30 teams competing!

For House points reasons:

1st Omega

2nd Kappa

3rd Sigma

4th Alpha

Thanks to all who took part and our lovely judging panel for their time each week!

Mrs Douglas

Senior Team Maths Challenge

On the 18th of November Vytene Janiukstyte (13E), Stefan Robert Chajee (13R), Kiran Mann(12L) and Luke Dodd(12L) represented Oaks Park at the Senior Team Maths Challenge(STMC) in Queen Mary’s Octagon Room.

The STMC is a competition testing mathematical, communication and teamwork skills. With a range of school from across East London they competed across three rounds; The group round consists of 10 questions, the students have 40 minutes to answer these questions; Cross-number, Similar to a crossword but with numerical answers. Teams work in pairs. One pair has the across clues, and the other pair has the down clues. Pairs work independently to complete the grid using logic and deduction.

And finally Shuttle, Teams compete against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team is divided into Pair A (given Questions 1 and 3) and Pair B (given Questions 2 and 4). Question 1 can be solved independently of the others, but the answer to each subsequent question is dependent on the previous answer, referred to as T in Questions 2, 3 and 4.

The Oaks Park students worked hard but didn’t make it through to the next round of the competition. On the day their marker described them as some of the most enthusiastic maths students they had met, and that they were pleased to see young people so happy to be working hard on maths problems.

Congratulations should be awarded to them for their effort and we look forward to next year’s competition.

Video Conference Virginia America

On Thursday 19th November a small group of year 11 English students were chosen to be involved in a poetry video conference with J.Ivy and Broad Run High School in Virginia America. J. Ivy is a renowned American performance poet, spoken word artist, recording artist, and author. He was also awarded a Grammy for his contribution with Jay-Z on Kanye West's The College Dropout album.

The renowned spoken word artist’s new writing campaign called ‘Dear Father’, is based on his eponymous poem. In his memoir, Ivy deals with the pain of being abandoned by his father and growing up in a tough neighbourhood in Chicago’s South Side. The school campaign aims to get students to write letters to their own fathers to encourage them to connect with their fathers and families.

Year 11 students, both at Oaks Park and across the water in the US, created heartfelt and

moving testaments to their family through their poems. Broad Run High School met

students from Oaks Park via the VC and discussed how influential Ivy was in inspiring them.

He then performed his poems to an enthralled audience and rapturous applause. The year

11 students gave up their own time to attend

the conference after school and behaved

impeccably throughout the VC. Well done to

all concerned.

Children in Need Grand Total raised £2506.28 This year the Sixth Form Senior Prefect Team had a target of raising at least £1000 for Children in Need. I am proud to say that we raised double this amount! The 2015 Senior Prefect Team created small groups made up of both Year 13s and Year 12s. Each group came up with an idea for an activity and successfully planned, advertised and executed it throughout the whole school during the Children in Need Week including:

Design your own Pudsey Competition.

Photo Booth, which allowed students to take pictures with Pudsey himself.

Pudsey Origami.

Fill the Jar with money - Year 7s started to fill the jars with pennies and collected a mammoth amount of pennies with one form even filling two jars!

Teacher and student leg waxing and hair dying and a delicious bake sale selling over 300 sweet treats in an hour. Teachers described the excitement of the bake sale as “a mad house with cake.”

The team even managed to involve the Head Teacher, Mr WIlks and persuaded him to give permission for a whole school complete non- uniform day.

The 2015 Senior Prefect Team and Miss Davda would like to send their thanks and gratitude to all students and teachers for their incredible generosity.

Netball News

Over the past few months, the U14s Girls Netball Team have played two U14s Essex Netball Cup matches.

Our first game against West Hatch, playing in the Essex Cup, saw our players face a tough competition. We were unfortunate to lose by 2 goals. The girls still made our school proud.

However, in our second game against the City Academy, where the girls were now playing for the U14 Essex Plate, we were fortunate enough to win! Both schools kept up a good fight, however maintaining our two goal lead allowed us to beat them 8-6.

The girls are looking forward to competing in their next U14 match and continuing further in the Plate.

New Building

The handover for the new building is still scheduled for Monday 30th November. We are keeping our fingers crossed! Most of the heavy plant has been removed from the site and the office portacabins are also being removed on a daily basis. It does not seem like we have had the builders on site for over a year. All credit to our students who have coped with the lack of space without complaining. The inside of the building is now all painted and carpeted and the cleaners are in dusting everything down. It will still be a massive job installing the IT infrastructure.

The 4G Astro-Turf Pitch has had the final markings put on it. Students are very excited

about using it for PE lessons and for extra-curricular activities. The Opening of the new

building which will be called The Craig Foster Building will be in January.

Year 10 Netball vs. Valentines

The Year 10 Netball Team played their second game of the year this week at home against Valentines and came away with a convincing win of 28-6. Goals were shared between Flavia Jeeveratnam and Buena Demiri, both of whom barely missed a shot all game. It was an all round great team performance but my player of the match was Ruth Gillard for her calm yet decisive forward play down the wing. Radusa Ravithasan was awarded player of the match by the opposition for her great interceptions. Well done girls!

Next game is away to Chadwell on 17th

December.

Frankenstein Trip

On 25th November, the year 12 Literature students sat pleasantly surprised, partly shocked yet totally enthralled by Danny Boyle’s stage production of Frankenstein, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Their trip to the National Theatre Archives was a total success as many had not seen a classical text unfold this way and the experience, as they too admitted, was totally rewarding and enriching. Ferrying back through the rush hour was a bit nerve- racking, yet many have expressed their desire to go on similar ventures in the future.
