School support team 2019:

Social Worker - Ella Sheedy – Every day except Tuesday

School Psychologist – Kieran Murphy – Tuesday, Friday

School Nurse – Sallyann Lees – Monday and Wednesday

Duty of care issues:

*Student drop off/pick up – Parents/Carers please use the top car park near the gym rather than the staff carpark

unless you need to come into the office. Please avoid dropping students off in high traffic areas. Drivers please drive

cautiously at all times when on our grounds! Students do not always have great road sense.

*Students who ride a bike should provide a helmet for their own safety. Students who need a helmet should see staff

as we have access to helmets through a community program. Students on scooters, although not legally required to

wear a helmet, should use designated paths and take care when crossing roads.

**Please talk to your child about crossing roads in designated areas. Due to the quick increase in size of our

school the mornings in particular are much busier than in the past. Students must adhere to road rules and behave in

a safe and respectful manner at all times on their way to and from school.

**A reminder that our staff car park is out of bounds to students for their own safety.

Message from the School association

“Please come along to join if you are a new parent. You will have more of a say in how we improve our school and

it’s a great way to improve your understanding of how the school operates and our plans for the future. We value the

support of parents on the association – which is much more active these days supporting the school with fund raising

and events. The commitment is 6-8 meetings a year with the option to join event planning and fundraising if you are

able to.” NEXT meeting – Wednesday 13 March – School Café (off staff car park) from 3.30 – 4.30pm.

Please come along and bring a friend!

Gill Berriman

Book Club is back!

Now the school year is back in full swing, Mrs Milne

has started the ball rolling with monthly Book Club

meetings in the library. A group of students from

various grades came together last week to share

what they’re currently reading and chat about what

they particularly liked about their selection. As usual,

Mrs Milne provided a home-baked snack for

participants – and as usual it was a highlight on the

day! The next Bayview Book Club will take place in

March and students from right across the school are

encouraged to come along and take part.

Middle Years Literacy Project

2019 is the second year of the Middle Years Literacy Project

and students at Bayview Secondary College are being provided

ongoing opportunities to improve their writing craft as part of

this great initiative that also involves students at Rokeby,

Clarendon Vale, Lauderdale and South Arm primary schools.

As part of the MYLP, the Bayview Association schools have

teamed up with The Story Island Project who will provide an

ongoing series of writing activities for students throughout the

year. As well as these activities being available to teachers for

use in classes, the Story Island tasks will be published via

Facebook and school newsletters so families can stay

connected to the kind of learning opportunities being offered

at school, and students have the option of working through them at home as well. This term, students in

years 7-10 will also be completing an online writing assessment that will help inform teachers as to the

areas of most need when it comes to student writing. If you’ve got any questions about the Middle Years

Literacy Project, please call 6247 7800 and ask for Mr Warren.

Report Collection Evening – Tuesday 19 March (3.10pm- 6pm)

Parents and carers are invited to come to the school and collect reports

from Home Group/Subject teachers at any time between 3.10pm and 6pm.

This will take place in our School Café where refreshments and BBQ will

be available.

We encourage all parents and carers to take this opportunity to come into

the School on an informal basis and meet with teachers.

If you are unable to attend the report collection evening your child’s teacher(s) will make contact with you

to discuss the report. The report will then be sent home with your child.

Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us here at the School.

CAREER CAFÉ 19 February

Simon and Jillian visited on Tuesday 19 February to talk about a career with Tasmanian Police. Simon and

Jillian were able to share with our students the pathway to being in the police force and graduating and

outlined some of the requirements that are needed to apply. These include having a driver licence, having a

good base of physical fitness and having a clean social media profile.

For more information https://recruitment.police.tas.gov.au/

Tasmania Police have launched a 4 day, live in residential for Grade 11 students – please contact Andrew

Moore at Bayview Secondary College on 6247 7800 for more information.

TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER FLAG

Thanks to a funding grant from the Office of the

Premier, we now have a new flag pole that allows

Bayview Secondary College to fly the Torres

Strait Islander flag, along with the Aboriginal and

Australian flags. We are grateful for the support

from Will Hodgman and his office.

Shelby Eaton and Harley Lovell, part of our

‘events team’, raised the Torres Strait Islander

flag for the first time.

My Education

Our overarching intention and purpose with My Education at Bayview Secondary College is to:

Engage and connect with industry, agencies, partners, organisations and the community to create meaningful

pathways and experiences to support student aspiration.

Having a planned approach that allows young people to engage in a conversation around the ‘world of work’ and

for every teacher on staff to at some point, touch on the career conversation.

In 2019, students will use www.growcareers.com.au as a framework in home group, as well as harnessing the resources of

the My Ed team and Collective Ed team, to help us achieve the above goals from our 2018-2021 ‘Strategic Overview’.

The Grow Careers website (www.growcareers.com.au) contains up-to-date and comprehensive information and links

to resources tailored to address the specific career questions of middle school students, secondary school students,

parents and the wider school community.

The website is also a clearing house of curated websites and web pages that support Australian students, families and

members of the wider school community with gathering and processing information to make decisions about career,

learning/course and employment decisions.

What this means is that students and families don't have to keep lots of websites 'in their head'. The Grow Careers

website answers all the typical career questions that students and families have and can be confidently used as a one stop

shop for career education. You are invited to check out the website www.growcareers.com.au

Other initiatives the college implemented in 2018, will continue and these include:

All students participating in ‘whole school BIG DAY OUT events’ in terms 2 and 3. Big Day Out off campus

excursions, help student’s consider their interests and develop a clearer picture about a career pathway of interest,

Big Day Out excursion in OPTIONS classes, designed by students and staff and using the shared resources of

Collective Ed to make connections with industry

Every Monday, the college will deliver JOB READY session for targeted students in small groups on resume writing

and applying for jobs (Wow Careers, Bakeries, Retail and Fast Food), essentially, preparing targeted students to enter

the job market. Students will be invited to these session as a follow up from reaching out or attending

Career Café’s on Tuesday’s.

The college will also hold a Big Day Out once per term, for selected students, using our community and industry

connections, as a follow up from Career Café and Job Ready sessions

Our overall aim with My Education is to create some career awareness and teach students how to use this knowledge to

make informed decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities. For more information, if you have some

life experience to help with our Career Café’s or your very own workplace might be interested in hosting a small group

of students, please contact Andrew Moore, Assistant Principal for Engagement, Wellbeing & Participation at school or

email [email protected]

Information for parents and carers

NAPLAN 2019 Equating Study

Your child’s school has been selected by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting

Authority (ACARA) to participate in this year’s NAPLAN 2019 Equating Study.

The NAPLAN 2019 Equating Study is being held in approximately 420 schools across Australia

between Monday 29 April to Friday 10 May.

The equating tests have occurred each year since 2009. Each year a small number of schools

participate. Schools are carefully selected to ensure a diverse range of student backgrounds and

abilities are represented. The purpose of the Equating Study is to enable the results for the NAPLAN

tests to be reported on the same NAPLAN measurement scales from one year to the next.

ACARA appreciates the participation of your child in the Equating Study. Your child’s involvement and

the results from this study will help ACARA ensure that parents, teachers and schools can rely on

NAPLAN results and be confident that the information is valid and comparable.

Please be assured the equating test is about ensuring NAPLAN results can be reported comparably, not about testing your child. Your child’s results are not reported.

What the study involves

Your child will sit only one paper-based equating test in either Reading, Language Conventions, Numeracy or Writing. The equating test will be paper-based even if your child is sitting NAPLAN Online in May.

The tests will be administered at the school by trained test supervisors. The teacher will remain in the classroom.

All selected students are expected to participate in the Equating Study, unless they have been exempted or withdrawn from NAPLAN tests. If you have questions about your child’s participation, please raise these with your school.

Further information about NAPLAN is available at www.nap.edu.au

Dear parents

As Friday 22 March is National Anti-Bullying Day I thought it timely to let the

school community know that at our school we aim to create a safe and

supportive school community for everyone.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do

when their child talks to them about bullying.

You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond

effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to al-

low your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you

their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what,

where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your

child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.

Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even

worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with

that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.

Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid

jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their

own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.

Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying

situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.

Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that

the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher

and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern

about your child’s safety.

Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in

regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au you will

find ideas on the Bullying No Way! Website for parents.

As well, please contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying

Thanks for your support to make our school a great school for everyone.
