CANGGU FOR FREE !

Yes, sometime you don’t need to spend much money to indulge yourself… This magazine is FREE, and we are very happy about it ! If you are lucky enough, you maybe even got the chance to grab our FREE map and FREE stickers that we are giving away on regular basis.

In Canggu you can also get some FREE Tattoos if you buy a drink or some Mexican food. If you choose your nights out carefully you might get some FREE beers or FREE glasses of wine now and then at selected venues.

In a lot of locations you can also enjoy FREE music, FREE art, FREE performances… The only thing that is costing a lot of money in Canggu right now seem to be the price of land and property, which is pretty ironic for a place offering so much entertainment for free.

In this edition, we present you a couple of talented artists and we would like to point out that art is NOT FREE ! We got so many requests from businesses asking us if we know any artists that would agree to paint art on their wall for FREE in exchange of “visibility” or even “fame” on social networks (which is kind of a joke when your new guesthouse or restaurant got 250 followers on Instagram ;)Art is not free. Most artist do it for a living, not only for passion. Visibility doesn’t pay the bills, keep it in mind and support ALL THE ARTISTS !

Tim Konektion.

RIK LEE Drawing addict !

This month KONEKTION has been sitting down with the Australian illustrator RIK LEE. We were already familiar with his beautiful and colourful tattooed girls on paper, and we were delighted to see him painting some murals near Echo Beach recently, so we wanted to know more about the Melbourne man and his art. We managed to catch up with him between two surf sessions, his second passion after drawing.

KNK: How did you end up being a full time illustrator ?

RIK : Because drawing is what I love doing the most ! I attended a graphic design school in Melbourne, but my first job was kind of boring… so as soon as I was going back home I started to draw my own stuff and develop my own style. On top of that, in the early 2000’s, illustration was becoming trendy again with a lot of cool magazines (THE FACE, Harper’s Bazaar, etc) using this form of art. This period was very inspirational for me.

So I decided to built my own portfolio and send it everywhere but… #fail ! I didn’t get a job ! So I went traveling, got more inspiration, made more drawings and I started to get some freelance illustration jobs on regular basis, this is how I started to become a full time illustrator.

KNK: How did you cope with the “digital wave” that took over the world during this period ?

RIK : Yes, during this time we saw a big rise in vector development, digital image, photoshop… So it was real cool to play around with these new techniques and tools. It opened a lot of possibilities and made some part of the job easier, for exemple with digital coloring, so today I am trying to use the best of both world. But to be honest, I still love hand drawing more than anything ! So I always need to have

KNK: Bagaimana akhirnya Anda menjadi freelance illustrator?

some pen and paper with me.KONEKTION : Canggu is full of hipsters with huge beards… but we noticed that you draw mostly girls, any reason ?

RIK : I have been doing it for long time, there is no special reason except that I like to draw people more than anything. Also I found women easier to draw, they are more interesting to draw and they are always more popular than guys !

KONETKION : You are here regularly, what do you like in Canggu ?

RIK : I grew up surfing in

Melbourne, so Canggu is definitely a nice place to catch some good waves. And here, it’s a very good place for creativity. There is a lot of lights, lot of space, and lots of inspiration… it is a very nice environment to draw and to create. On top of that, I can have a very healthy lifestyle in Bali, which is much better than when I was spending my evening drinking with friends back home !

RIK : Yes, it was new for me to paint outside and pretty fun ! Actually I got contacted by some other artists working on a project promoting #artoverhate. It’s a project that started in Israel with some graffiti artists, and in the last two years they started to invite mural artists, illustrators, etc… so when they contacted me to do a

chapter of the project in Indonesia I was keen to join.

We painted in Canggu, in Yogjakarta, in Kupang… we did also a lot of community works with schools and locals.

Kupang was the best part. We met a lot of people, and got an incredibly warm welcome from the local artists and politics there. They threw up a big ceremony for us and even the local police was helping us !

Bali is a fantastic island , blessed with sacred temples, beautiful beaches, amazing landscape and… a bunch of abandoned airplanes ! Incredibly, none of these large commercial planes are located near the island’s only airport, they are all scattered in some pretty unexpected locations.

KONEKTION counted 4.5 of these abandoned planes, needless to say it’s quite a lot for a small island like Bali. Many of them have been sitting there for years and are surrounded with mystery and crazy rumors.

The most famous of them is a Boeing 737 sitting off Jalan Raya Nusa Dua near Pandawa Beach, in south Bali. We

tried to get close to it but the 24/7 security guard on the spot was not super open to discussion… so we had to pay 5’000 Rp (Yes, there is no small business in Bali ;) to the nearby warung owner to be allowed to walk behind his food stall to catch a good view on this metallic giant . Rumors says that it’s Australian owner, who owns several businesses in Bali, plan to turn it into a restaurant… someday. If it does happen, we just hope that the food will be better than the one served on regular airplanes! But it doesn’t look to be ready to welcome clients anytime soon…

Another of these giant birds can be found in Jimbaran, just next to the main road going from the airport to Uluwatu. This one got his 15min of fame when the Berlin Graffiti crew 1UP painted it on both side during a fullmoon night in 2016 and shared some pictures on their social media accounts. 1UP got famous for painting trains around the world but they couldn’t find any wagons in Bali, so that plane became a natural target for them. It is sitting just next to a Dunkin Donut and the security guard is much more friendly than in Nusa Dua. Be polite and he will let you go around, even walk on top of it.

The only abandoned plane

that was actually turned into a real restaurant can be found in Gianyar, not far from the Komune Beach club. The fuselage of the decommissioned 1985-built Boeing 737-400 plane was transported to the rice fields in Keramas in mid-2016. The wings were re-attached and steel supports help give an in-flight look and its major build began, complete with a green lawn and bar for alfresco dining. After months of speedy construction and final touch-ups, it then ‘took flight’, welcoming its first diners in October the same year as the Keramas Aero Club restaurant, complete with fancy dining tables and leather seats. Some friendly “Flight attendants” will serve you some pretty good local and international food.

Regarding the 0.5 plane mentioned at the beginning of this article, we are referring to the tail of a DC-10 sitting on top of an event venue complex in Kerobokan. It is very hard to miss if you are driving in the area. It was once a trendy rooftop nightspot, but stay unused for many years until it got a second “take off” last year as GATE 88 Rooftop, hosting some quality pop up parties with some local and international DJs. We are not sure if any parties will be held there in 2018, so check social medias to make sure you

don’t miss the chance to party in the sky !

SAY IT LOUDtime to spill it

Raph (35 yo) from France wanted to SAY IT LOUD :

DIGITAL NOMAD: dijidl nō̩ mad

See also: freeloaders, influencers, self-proclaimed models and other freelance community managers.

Noun used to describe location independent people, that use technology to perform their job.

They most of the time also use (and abuse) free wifi in cafes and restaurants, thinking that buying a single cup of coffee allows them to stay as long as they want and use the aforementioned free wifi (and of course, complain when it is not fast enough).

Usually very self-entitled, the digital nomads think they deserve free food/clothes/accommodations when they reach a certain amount of followers on their social media accounts.

They are obviously in love with their own image and armed with the latest smartphone and selfie stick, ready to shoot their new Vlog episode, or take another picture of their face (doing the same facial expression of course)!

BRESCIA BERCANEArt on The Beach

Terlalu rumit. Setelah beberapa

KNK: Brescia, how did you end up creating beachwear in Bali?

I have been drawing since I was very young and I did Art studies in Toulouse, followed by a school of styling in Paris. I was self-employed and I worked for a few years with small brands making prints and embroidery.

In 2016, I realized my dream and I went to India to work for Manish Arora, one of my favorite designers. In addition, I have always been passionate about India and its culture. So I left with stars in my eyes, but the daily life in Delhi turned out to be very complicated. Too complicated.

Page 21: ISSUE 04 - MAY/JUNE 18...followers on Instagram ;) Art is not free. Most artist do it for a living, not only for passion. Visibility doesn’t pay the bills, keep it in mind and support

After a few months I gave up, even though humanly it was a wonderful experience.

Just before leaving India, I received a proposal to work in Bali. As I wanted to continue to discover Asia, I jumped at the opportunity.

Upon my arrival in Bali, I fell in love with the Island straight after landing!

The first year was super creative and enriching. I worked with a small local brand but one day I woke up with an idea, or a dream: I wanted to start my own brand and launch my sarong collection. So I did a lot of research on the possibilities of doing business here and I partnered with Manon, my long time friend; together we launched the brand «BresciaBercane» almost two years ago with the support of our respective dads. I take care of the creative side and Manon is in charge of the business side.

We started with only seven sarongs, or pareos, but we managed to find customers very quickly and it allowed us to develop and launch the swimwear collections.

KNK: How do you work for the design process? Digitally or with paper?

I work only with paper and pencils, markers or watercolours. I also like

Tahun pertama sangat kreatif.

to be involved in the printing process to ensure quality.

KNK: How is it to see people walking around wearing your art on them?It is very strange and very pleasant at the same time. It is nice that people are sensitive to my art; I can share and transmit my passion. It is a great feeling. People also seem to understand our message, our emotions. When people visit our showroom, there is always a lot of energy, people just want to touch, to exchange, it is always full of life.

KNK: You draw mostly patterns and portraits, any reason?A portrait is very alive, and we can give it even more life, especially by contrasting the gray shades of the pencils with some beautiful colors. That said, my inspirations are very eclectic: fruits, people, cultures or nature. In the end, I make a patchwork of it and I create my own universe, my own characters, with a spiritual touch.

KNK: What do you like in Canggu area ?

I think Canggu has gone too far, too fast. When I need to relax or find inspiration, I need calm space and nature. So I regularly escape to areas like Medewi or Balian

KNK: What are your projects for 2018?

On a personal level, I am going back to India for the first time in a long time to discover Rajasthan and its culture. I also want to find a new home in Bali that is more conducive for creation. At the professional level, we would like to start a new range of products for the home, with for example,

pillows or decorative textiles. We also want to develop our showroom, launch our own shop as well as a children’s line.

When the brand is big and mature enough we would like to be able to support local social and environmental causes that are important to us by donating a portion of our profits to some charities.

TRASHINGGINDRING WASTED

night at Pretty Poison

Our friends from Pretty Poison were hosting a dope Skate & Paint night with the graffiti artist GINDRING from Magelang, Java. GINDRING has been painting in the streets for more than 10 years, and has been skateboarding for even longer, so his trashy punk style was a perfect match with the Canggu Skateboard temple. This was GINDRING first solo exhibition in Bali, and we hope it won’t be the last.

Don’t miss the regular Art & Skate nights on Thursday at Pretty Poison !

Learned about street art after watching some in Video Game, started to do some Vandalism / art soon after. Been painting for more than 10 years now, also doing a lot of S8board.
