Celebrating 20 Years of Cheers!Introduced to the Charlotte area

in 1994, the Carolina Renaissance Festival contained just 6 acres of attractions. Now, the Festival’s 22 acre fictional storybook village celebrates 20 years of cheers on 325 acres of pristine autumn woodlands.

The Festival is now one of the largest renaissance events in the country and one of the largest attractions in the Carolinas. Nearly 190,000 expected attendees will time travel to the village during 8 consecutive weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, from October 5th - November 24th. Just north of Charlotte at the border of Huntersville and Concord, the event is a short distance from both I-77 and I-85.

The Festival contains a charming artisan marketplace of 16th century architecture and design and features over 100 merchants, crafters, and artists that create, demonstrate, and sell quality handmade wares. Eleven outdoor stages burst to life with non-stop theater, comedy, music, dance,

magic, circus entertainments, and live falconry demonstrations. Hundreds of costumed characters engage you during your stroll through the village. Partake in a variety of country fair games, people-powered rides, and interactive lane performances. The Festival’s signature attraction features knights on horseback jousting three times daily at the Queen’s tournament arena.

In addition to the popular Festival antics, 20th anniversary celebrations include special guest performances by 4 popular variety acts visiting from around the globe and performing on stage for a limited time. Photos and guest performance schedule is online at RenFestInfo.com. Their Majesties’ special guests are:

The Checkerboard Guy! A high-energy comedy and prop-centric variety show that turns audiences of all ages into heroes!

MooNiE the Magnificent! A renaissance clown that surprises adults and children alike with exceptional juggling, daring adventures, and intelligently sophomoric comedy – all without speaking a word!

Duke of Danger! Performing unique and ill-advised acrobatic stunts combined with good-natured humor and physical comedy. This is a family friendly show you do not want to miss!

BrooN! A lovable “bad boy” that combines sly wit and conversational comedy with a variety of tricks and stunts that are sure to keep you entertained from start to end!

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Pay your respects at Camp Lejeune’s Beirut MemorialSet in a wooded site in

Jacksonville on the edge of Camp Lejeune Marine Base is a special tribute to 273 soldiers who perished in a terrorist attack in Beirut, Lebanon. They were more than soldiers to the people of Jacksonville, one of North Caro-lina’s military heritage areas. The U.S. Marine Corps’ 24th Marine Amphibious Unit was sent to Beirut on a peacekeeping mission. They had been based at Camp Lejeune, and they were friends, neighbors, fellow church members, baseball and soccer coaches – members of the community. Jacksonville and Onslow County in general has always had a special relationship with the military. The area is home to five military bases as reflected in the county’s slogan, “Pride in Service, People and Place.” After the tragedy, members of the com-munity joined together with Camp Lejeune to create this unique Beirut Memorial. People from throughout the community did everything they could, including a girl auctioning off her Cabbage Patch Doll, to raise funds to complete it. The memorial features two broken walls

with a bronze statue of a soldier standing on a pedestal between them. The memorial is inscribed

“They Came In Peace.” It includes the poem “The Other Wall” and has the names of 273 members of the community who gave their lives in Beirut, including three that died during a rescue mission in Grenada. The site hosts an annual observance in October with families of the deceased, military officials and members of the community.

Film Junkies Guide to North CarolinaFrench Broad River The French Broad River begins near Rosman in Transylvania County. A great way to experience it is via one of the outfitters that offer full-day and half-day rafting excursions. One of the most respected outfitters is the French Broad Rafting Company, located in Marshall, for information, call 800-570-RAFT or visit www.frenchbroadrafting.com

Few waterways are more storied than the French Broad River. It’s

the third-oldest river in the world, only the Nile and New rivers are believed to be older. Named by English settlers because of its flow toward French-occupied land, the French Broad travels more than 200 miles northward from North Carolina into Tennessee. That’s right, northward! And it’s wider than the average mountain river, with low currents and gently sloping topography, all of which combine to create an ample flood plain.

As the river flows northwest of Asheville through Pisgah National Forest toward Marshall, its waters become more intense, with steep gorges, narrow channels, and exciting rapids that are ideal for whitewater rafting.

Thanks to cinematographer Tim Orr, the David Gordon Green gem All the Real Girls boasts stunning footage of the mountains

surrounding the ancient river near Marshall. In A Good Baby, there’s a fight scene along the banks, and the bad guy, a sinister traveling salesman (David Strathairn), gets knocked into the river. Around Asheville, the French Broad flows a bit more serenely through Biltmore Estate. The replica of the White House in the James Garner/Jack Lemmon comedy My Fellow Americans was actually built along the river’s edge.
