The Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides

updates on production of major non-food and industrial crops namely,

abaca, coconut, coffee, rubber, sugarcane, and tobacco. These crops

are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture that the

Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) releases quarterly.

This 3rd quarter 2013 issue of the Bulletin provides the January-

June 2013 final estimates of production and area planted for permanent

crops and area harvested for temporary crops and the July-September

2013 preliminary estimates of production. The data on area and number

of bearing trees are reported on a semi-annual basis.

Data on area, production, and number of bearing trees are

based on the results of the Quarterly Crops Production Survey (CrPS)

of the BAS and the Quarterly Coconut Production Survey (QCPS) of

the Philippine Coconut Authority and BAS. Data on canes milled are

sourced from the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

    Abaca

The July-September 2013 production of abaca dropped to 16.71 thousand mt or by 3.8 percent from last year’s level of 17.38

    thousand mt (Table 1).

Productions in Visayas continue to drop due to the ill effects of

mosaic and bunchy tops diseases. As a result, outputs went down

    for the following provinces:

    o Leyte, by 14.6 percent;

o Southern Leyte, by 14.6 percent; and

    o Bohol, by 21.6 percent.

Decrease in production was also reported in Davao Region. This

was the result of the damages brought about by typhoon “Pablo”

late last year. Abaca production in Compostela Valley, Davao

Oriental and Davao del Norte went down by 54.3 percent, 27.0

    percent and 7.5 percent, respectively.

During the period, production of abaca fibers in Aklan dropped

by 12.7 percent and in Negros Oriental by 6.9 percent due to

    frequent rains.

Low market demand caused the output of Cebu, Iloilo and Aklan

to decline by 84.7 percent, 27.1 percent and 12.7 percent,

    respectively.

Bicol Region, where production continually improved, was the

top producer of abaca fiber with a 34.9 percent share to the

national output. Eastern Visayas, on the other hand, had 27.4

    percent (Figure 1).

    July-September 2013

    3

  • Coconut

During the July to September 2013 period, coconut production was estimated at 4.17 million mt or 3.0 percent less than last

year’s production of 4.30 million mt (Table 1).

Around 98.0 percent were harvested as mature nuts while 2.0 percent were young nuts.

Productions of mature and young nuts were 3.0 percent and 1.4 percent lower than the corresponding outputs in July-September

    2012.

The following were cited for the lower outputs: o Aurora Province was battered by typhoon “Labuyo” in

mid-August causing the production on mature coconut to

drop by 38.5 percent or by 14.83 thousand mt.

o Cutting and replanting of trees were reported in Oriental

Mindoro. This reduced the number of bearing trees by 2.2

percent resulting to a 7.9 percent or 2.02 thousand mt

    drop in the province’s production.

o Cutting of trees affected by insect scale caused the

production of mature coconut to drop by 20.3 percent in

    Batangas.

o Shifting from coconut to rubber farming in Basilan

reduced area and number of mature coconut trees which

resulted to a 10.0 percent decrease in production.

o The adverse effects of typhoon “Pablo” in Davao Region

reduced coconut production in Compostela Valley, Davao

Oriental, and Davao del Norte by 32.9 percent, 40.6

    percent, and 5.4 percent, respectively.

o The top coconut producers were Eastern Visayas with

13.6 percent share to the national total followed by Davao

Region with 12.8 percent, and CALABARZON with 11.9

    percent (Figure 2).

    4

  • Figure 3. Coffee production by region, Philippines,

    July-September 2013

    5

  • Coffee

The total production of all varieties of coffee in dried berries

reached 7.62 thousand mt during the period July to September

2013. This was 15.8 percent below the 2012 output of 9.05

    thousand mt (Table 1).

Production of Arabica coffee went down by 4.3 percent due to the following:

o In Maguindanao, early onset of rains adversely affected

    the development of coffee berries.

o Adverse effects of typhoon “Pablo” to bearing trees in

Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte.

o Shifting to banana lakatan and cavendish in Davao City.

The bulk of the drop in output of Excelsa was traced to Davao

    Region given the following reasons:

o Shifting to banana (lakatan and cavendish) in Davao City.

o Reduction in the area and number of mature trees in

Compostela Valley as the aftermath of typhoon “Pablo”.

In Sulu, a heavy rain during the flowering stage was detrimental

to the development of berries of Liberica coffee.

Various reasons were cited for the contraction in

production of Robusta coffee, as follows:

o Adverse effects of typhoon “Pablo” in Davao del Norte

    and Agusan del Sur.

o Less mature trees bore fruit due to pruning (rejuvenation

    process) in Agusan del Norte.

o Shifting to banana lakatan, cavendish and senorita

varieties in Davao City and Compostela Valley.

Of the total production, 62.0 percent were of Robusta, 30.3

percent were Arabica, 7.0 percent were Excelsa and 0.7 percent

    was Liberica.

The top coffee producer was Davao Region (Figure 3).

  • Figure 4. Rubber production by region, Philippines,

    July-September 2013

    7

  • Rubber

During the 3rd quarter of 2013, production of rubber grew by 0.4 percent from 98.65 thousand mt in 2012 to 99.08 thousand mt in

    2013 (Table 1).

Increase number of tappable trees were reported in North

Cotabato, Basilan, Agusan del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte,

Zamboanga del Sur, Davao City, and Davao del Sur.

Tappable trees in Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay were

reported to be more matured and much bigger, thus, yielding

    more latex.

Compostela Valley, and Agusan del Sur remained affected

by typhoon “Pablo”. Production in these provinces were down

by 77.0 percent and 35.0 percent, respectively.

The top rubber cuplump producers during the period were

    Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCKSKSARGEN, Autonomous

Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), Caraga, and Northern

    Mindanao (Figure 4).

  • Sugarcane

The July-September 2013 production of sugarcane for all uses

went up by 24.2 percent from 935.59 thousand mt in 2012 to

    1,161.50 thousand mt in 2013 (Table 1).

Production of sugarcane for centrifugal sugar increased by 20.6

percent. Only Iloilo, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental

harvested milled sugarcane during the period. Production of

Negros Occidental, with a share of 89.2 percent to the national

output, increased by 19.7 percent (Figure 5).

Only Isabela harvested sugarcane for ethanol.

High demand increased production of sugarcane for panocha/muscovado by 4.0 percent.

o Output in Albay grew by 894.27 mt. o Production in Isabela increased by 161.78 mt due to

movement of harvest from the 2nd quarter.

o High demand from processor of delicacies motivated

planting of sugarcane for panocha/muscovado in Negros

Oriental resulting to a 95.00 mt increase in sugarcane

    output.

Harvest from new sugarcane area in President Quirino, Sultan

Kudarat buoyed output of the province by 76.40 mt.

Four (4) provinces, Isabela, Quirino, North Cotabato and Sultan

Kudarat processed sugarcane for basi/vinegar during the quarter.

Isabela was the top producer, sharing 73.3 percent share to the

national total, and posted a growth of 37.0 percent during the

    period.

Aside from the low output in Compostela Valley for sugarcane

for chewing, low market demand was cited for 25.0 percent drop

    in production

    10 06

  • Figure 6. Tobacco production by region, Philippines,

    July-September 2013

    11

  • Tobacco

There was no production of Virginia and Burley tobacco during the period.

Production of Native tobacco increased by 161.8 percent or by 353.34 mt compared to same period last year (Table 1).

About 96.2 percent of the national production was produced in

    Misamis Oriental (Figure 6).

The high price of Native tobacco last year influenced the decision

of farmers in Misamis Oriental to increase the production area,

thus, increasing the provincial output by 189.5 percent or 360.00

    mt.
