DESCRIPTION

Thousands of years ago, the Lord God chose a people, separated them to Himself and gave them a prophetic destiny. That destiny didn’t end with Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. In 'Israel’s Prophetic Destiny', Jill Shannon traces the history of God’s covenant with the Jewish people and shows how He is still blessing them today – and blessing the rest of the world through them. With solid biblical teaching on the significance of the Jews, as well as practical guidance that teaches Christians how to pray for the people of Israel, Israel’s Prophetic Destiny will give you a fuller picture of God’s redemptive plans for the end times. You can share in the Lord’s love for His people, Israel. By praying for His people, you will grow closer to the heart of God.

our dear sister Jill shannon has given the church another vital tool, Israel ’s Prophetic Destiny: If I Forget Jerusalem. This book gives the reader a sound understanding of the nation of Israel—her call, destiny, destination, and ultimate yoking together with the Messiah. Jill has worked hard to provide clear histories and treasures of revelation that will help the reader align his heart with the Lord’s purposes for these last days. This book is a vital study for all christians because all the end-time prophecies concerning the destiny of Israel are going to come to pass in our days.

sadhu sundar selvarajJesus Ministries

As the emphasis shifts from the church to the Kingdom of God, we need to understand that Israel is part of the Kingdom. The grafting together of both is part of the Kingdom message. Jesus said that the Gospel of the Kingdom has to be preached in every nation before he can return. Israel and the church have to flow together as one new Man, and this is part of the end-time Kingdom message.

Jill shannon has clearly laid out many important truths regarding Israel and the church, and I highly recommend this book to you.

Jill’s prophetic insight sparkles as she presents a sweeping panorama of Israel’s past to see clearly toward its future of total restoration. Loaded with sobering truths, this book is destined to turn the hearts of Gentile believers toward the nation of Israel to intercede and act in favor of the Jewish people. With this book, you hold in your hands a master key to understanding how to participate in the great end-time revival. your view of the city of Jerusalem, the land of Israel, and the church will never be the same!

Pastor steven Brookswww.stevenbrooks.org

More so now than at any point in modern history, Israel is a focal point of both biblical prophecy and current events. once again, Jill shannon has remarkably captured God’s heart on this incredibly important subject and articulated much-needed insight for the 21st century believer. Jill’s revelatory understanding is clearly communicated and validated so that we can have confidence in our scriptural position concerning Israel and our responsibility. It is with considerable confidence and enthusiasm that I recommend Israel ’s Prophetic Destiny: If I Forget Jerusalem.

Foreword

Israel’s Prophetic Destiny: If I Forget Jerusalem is a complete work con-cerning the church’s responsibilities toward Israel and the Jewish

people. Jill has compiled an intense body of research, history, and prophecy which clearly presents the Lord’s position on Israel. This resource will be a valuable tool in the hands of Bible teachers, pastors, and prayer leaders. It will help all christians to move quickly into the place of informed intercession, and will expose all hidden strongholds of anti-semitism which have come down through the history of the church.

This book is vital information for every christian for these last days. I believe the dividing line for the true church and the church in deception will be their stand on Israel. The Lord is bringing all things to a climax in history, and it is no longer optional for christians to take their costly stand with the Jewish people and the nation of Israel. The church and Israel must come together with one heart in Messiah. once again, God’s purpose to create one new Man is evident in Jill’s newest book. I believe it will give you all the insight and prophetic understanding you’ve been looking for in one clear and compressed resource. yeshua started in Israel and will return to Israel.

the lord’s Appointed times And seAsons

We are privileged to be living in the generation that will see the return of the Lord yeshua ( Jesus) the Messiah. The prophets

longed to see this day, and the great cloud of witnesses earnestly watches and waits for our generation to reap the final harvest. This is the harvest of souls that they planted and sowed by the word of their testimony and the shedding of the Martyr’s blood (see Luke 10:24; heb.11:39-40).

every prophet in the Bible wrote about the signs and events that would unfold in this generation, and the Lord yeshua ( Jesus) himself spoke much about the period leading up to his return. Most of these prophetic words connected to the land of Israel, the city of Jerusalem, and the Jewish people.

The Book of revelation is a prophetic book which is especially helpful for the last generation although it overflows with warnings and encouragements for all generations. Much of what John saw and heard in his revelatory encounters consisted of the events that would fall upon the generation who would see the great and terrible Day of the Lord. This was the very day that every major and minor prophet wrote about for centuries before the birth of the Lord yeshua.

prophecy Is cyclicalMany christians think of biblical prophecy in a “linear” way: This

means that they look for a prophecy in the Bible, and try to identify one exact moment in history when this word was completely fulfilled. however, the truth is that biblical prophecy is more “cyclical” than linear. What I mean is that prophetic words in the Bible establish a pattern or a repetitive theme. They have multiple layers of parallel fulfillment throughout history; some prophecies even have three or four cycles of fulfillment as history moves forward. This is the way the ancient rabbis looked at biblical prophecy: as a pattern, rather than as a single event.1

For example, there are some christians who believe that the prophecies in the Book of revelation were fulfilled at the time of the roman destruction of Jerusalem in a.d. 70. They do not understand that there are historical cycles of fulfillment which will reach their greatest fulfillment at the time that the Lord yeshua comes back.

Here are two examples of this principle of cycles of fulfillment, rather than merely one moment in history when a prophetic word is fulfilled:

1. A prophetic word spoken by the prophet Joel was fulfilled in the Book of Acts, and yet it will still have a future last days’ fulfillment, such as Joel 2:28-32.

2. The prophet Daniel predicted the rise of a blasphemous ruler, which he saw as an arrogant “little horn” (a small leader who seized the ruling empire, and became a cruel tyrant, killing the faithful people of God). We know that about 400 years after Daniel saw this vision, a cruel leader arose from the Greek empire, who was a “prototype” of the antichrist who will arise in the last generation. This man was named Antiochus IV, and he began his persecutions in 168 b.c. We will study more about him in the chapter on Daniel’s beast empires.

Israel prophetic destiny FINAL.indd 16 12/6/11 11:28 AM

Page 12: Israel's Prophetic Destiny

the lord’s appointed times and seasons ✡ 17

When the Lord yeshua also spoke about Daniel’s “little horn” who will “set up the abomination that causes desolation” (Dan. 9:27), Antiochus was already dead. But the Lord spoke about this as a future event. Forty years after the Lord had warned his disciples about the “abomination that causes desolation,” the roman army destroyed Jerusalem and the temple of God. however, the greater fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy is reserved for the last days’ tyrant whom Paul calls “the man of lawlessness.” This was not fulfilled in the roman destruction of Jerusalem. caesar did not sit down and rule the world from God’s temple; rather, his armies burned it to the ground.

Israel: The critical SignpostWhy is Israel the critical signpost in the last generation? There are

hundreds of prophecies in the Bible about that electrifying moment in human history when the kingdoms of this world will be smashed, and the Kingdom of God will come. The Lord yeshua will return to earth and will reign as King (see rev. 11:15; Zech. 14:9). All of these prophecies connect directly or indirectly to the land and people of Israel, or to the city of Jerusalem, which must exist at the time that these prophecies are fulfilled.

In fact, until the rebirth of the modern state of Israel in 1948, many of these prophecies would have made no sense to the reader. They would only make sense in a world where there was a nation called Israel, a capital city called Jerusalem, and a thriving, vibrant Jewish population living in this land, as in the days of old. one example of this is found in Zechariah chapter 12.

I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations.

Israel prophetic destiny FINAL.indd 17 12/6/11 11:28 AM

Page 13: Israel's Prophetic Destiny

18 ✡ israel’s prophetic destiny

All who try to move it will injure themselves….On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:2-3,9).

As we will study in a later chapter, the ottoman turks conquered and occupied Jerusalem for 400 years, from 1517–1917. During this period, they dealt harshly with the land of Israel, not valuing the ecology or fertility of the land. The turks imposed such a high tax on every tree that the Jews were forced to cut down all the trees, since they lacked the funds to pay these high taxes. Due to this terrible policy, the land became a dry and uninviting wasteland under turkish occupation.

People who visited Jerusalem just before the end of ottoman rule commented on how bleak and desolate and undesirable this city was. surely, no one would desire to live there! Author Mark twain visited Jerusalem only 140 years ago, and he made this observation: “rags, wretchedness, poverty, and dirt, Jerusalem is mournful and dreary and lifeless. I would not desire to live here.”2

In the light of Jerusalem’s pitiful condition for so many centuries, isn’t it amazing that the prophet Zechariah prophesied that all the nations on earth would be contesting and contending for ownership and rule of this city? Why would all the nations of the earth want to invade, overthrow, and dominate such an insignificant little town in the dusty Judean hills?

During the last nineteen hundred years, these words of Zechariah would have seemed impossible to anyone looking at the city with a natural eye. since this city was trampled on by many Gentile powers, as the Lord yeshua had prophesied in Luke 21:24, Jerusalem was not a thriving Jewish city for all these centuries. The Gentile empires who trampled it did not love this city, nor did they build it up or establish it with the blessings of the Lord.

But now, as the modern reader considers Zechariah’s prophecy, this coming invasion makes perfect sense, due to the intense political climate which surrounds this city. every powerful nation and many religions exert a claim on this city. Jerusalem is controversial, and the nations are unusually interested in who controls it.

end-time prophecies can only be fulfilled during a generation in which the scattered Jewish people have been regathered to Israel, and the land of Israel and the city of Jerusalem are repopulated.

aligning the Bride’s heartThe Lord has supernaturally brought the Jewish people back to

their homeland, and has blessed them exceedingly, even though the majority of Jewish people have not yet acknowledged the Lord yeshua as their Messiah. The main purpose of this book is to help the Lord’s people to love and pray for Israel with understanding and informed intercession, and to stand with her in the coming onslaughts. The true church needs to come into alignment with the Lord’s acute desire for his own brothers and sisters to know him and to be covered by his wings of protection.

our God remembers the covenants that he swore to Abraham, no matter how many years have gone by, and no matter how unfaithful Israel has been. he swore a vow to Abraham, which he bound himself to keep under oath. neither Abraham nor his descendants were required to do anything in order for God to keep this blood covenant. Let’s examine the original covenant with Abraham, because this will give us the sure foundation we will need to overcome the distorted reports that bombard us from a very biased media.

God’s covenant With abrahamout of Ur of the chaldeans, the Lord called Abram out of his pagan

family and nation and sent him to an unknown land. he called him to become the father of many nations. here we see that all the nations and families of the earth will be blessed through Abraham’s seed.

Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him

Israel prophetic destiny FINAL.indd 19 12/6/11 11:28 AM

Page 15: Israel's Prophetic Destiny

20 ✡ israel’s prophetic destiny

who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3 nKJV).

After Abram reached this land, the Lord cut a blood covenant with him, in which he swore to give him and his descendants an unconditional land grant of this land.

And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces. On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates” (Genesis 15:17-18).

This passage describes the “cutting of a covenant,” a method of ratifying a treaty in the ancient near east. A sacrifice was cut in half lengthwise, and each piece was laid on either side of a shallow gully. The blood of the animal would run down into the gully and form a pool. The two parties who were entering into covenant would both walk past each other through the blood. They would take an oath saying, “May this be done to me if I do not uphold my part of this treaty.”

But in this passage, both parties did not walk through the blood. We see that God put Abram into a deep sleep. The Lord alone, in the form of a blazing torch, walked through the blood in the midst of the sacrifice. This signifies that he alone was responsible to uphold this covenant. since no conditions were placed on Abraham, this is called an “unconditional land grant covenant.” This means that even if Abraham’s descendants would be unfaithful, the Lord would uphold his covenant because he swore it by himself and took full responsibility to see that it was fulfilled.

The Seed of MessiahThe Lord promised Abraham a son who would become the seed

of blessings and redemption to all the nations. This son would be the

Israel prophetic destiny FINAL.indd 20 12/6/11 11:28 AM

Page 16: Israel's Prophetic Destiny

the lord’s appointed times and seasons ✡ 21

ancestor of King David, as well as the ancestor of the Lord yeshua. The Lord made it clear that Abraham’s wife sarah would bear this son. however, because sarah was barren, she urged Abraham to go and impregnate her egyptian maidservant, hagar. hagar bore Ishmael, but he was not the seed, nor the child of promise. Abraham loved his son Ishmael and prayed for him:

And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him” (Genesis 17:18-19).

The Lord blessed Ishmael, but he was not the one the Lord promised Abraham who would carry the seed of blessing to the nations and who would inherit this promised land. The Lord confirmed to Abraham that the covenant would be with Isaac, the promised child born in sarah’s old age. God later confirmed this covenant with Isaac and Jacob in Genesis 26:3-4 and 35:11-12.

The Lord has been generous with the descendants of Ishmael, and has given them tremendous tracts of oil-rich land, as well as great fertility and prosperity. The Lord loves all of his children, whether Jews, Arabs, or those from other nations. But any individual or nation that opposes his irrevocable covenants will find themselves fighting God himself.

There were two specific promises that the Lord made to the descendants of Abraham through Isaac and Jacob, and not through Ishmael and esau: the original boundaries of the land of Israel, and the ancestry of the coming Messiah, through whom all nations would be blessed with salvation and everlasting life.

The Jewish Messiah, who would come in the fullness of time, is the one called “the seed” in Genesis 3:14-15. The Lord promised eve that this seed, who would come forth from her, would crush the head of the serpent that had brought death and sin into the world.

Israel prophetic destiny FINAL.indd 21 12/6/11 11:28 AM

Page 17: Israel's Prophetic Destiny

22 ✡ israel’s prophetic destiny

since then, the devil has done everything in his power to cut off this holy lineage. From the murder of Abel, to the genocide of the hebrew babies in egypt, to the slaughter of the princes of Judah by wicked queen mother Athaliah (see 2 Kings 11:1-3), to haman’s scheme to murder all the Jews in the Persian empire, to the massacre of the babies in Bethlehem, the enemy has tried to prevent this holy seed from coming into the world.

Just as the devil struggled to prevent the first coming of Messiah yeshua, he also strives mightily to prevent the return of yeshua as King and Judge. When the Lord died on the cross, the enemy was judged through yeshua’s perfect life, his atoning death, and his victory over the grave. And yet, the devil’s final punishment has not yet been meted out upon him. he still roams the earth and brings terrible suffering upon the Lord’s children.

Although satan has been sentenced to the lake of fire, the Lord has granted him limited time and power to harm, entice, and plunder humankind, whom he hates with a spiteful and jealous hatred. he carries a particular hatred for the Jewish people because they must play an integral role in Jesus’ soon return to establish his Kingdom on earth.

“You Will Not See Me again Until…”one of the last phrases that the Lord spoke to his Jewish leaders

before he went to the cross was, “You [ Jerusalem] will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord’” (Matt. 23:39).

The hebrew expression found in Psalms 118:26, “Blessed is he who comes,” actually means, “Welcome!” The spiritual leaders of Israel in this last generation must welcome the Lord yeshua before he will return.

Until recently, there had been no ruling council in Israel (called the “sanhedrin”) for 1,900 years. Without this leadership in place, they could not have uttered this welcome to the Lord. But now the

Israel prophetic destiny FINAL.indd 22 12/6/11 11:28 AM

Page 18: Israel's Prophetic Destiny

the lord’s appointed times and seasons ✡ 23

sanhedrin has been reconvened in Jerusalem; these are the 71 religious leaders of Israel. The Lord has told us that he will not come back to Jerusalem until they welcome him.

The enemy knows that if he can destroy Israel, Jerusalem, and her leaders, they cannot cry these words of welcome, and the Lord cannot return to Jerusalem. When the Lord returns, satan will be imprisoned for a thousand years and then cast into the lake of fire (see rev. 20:1-3,10). Therefore, the enemy wants to avoid his punishment by destroying the Jewish people.

And so, the enemy has brought terrible onslaughts against the Jewish people. he has deceived all nations, inciting them to hate Israel and the Jewish people. he has even deceived the church to hate them, using racism, christian pride, slander, and false theology to create hatred and fear of the Jewish people. We will look at these strategies in the coming chapters.

It is urgent to the Lord that his true church become aligned with his glorious purposes for the redemption of Israel. It is satan who wants to destroy the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is the Lord God who desires to tenderly call her back to himself, as a wife who was deserted for a brief moment, but who is now coming back to her husband (see Isa. 54:6-7; hos. 2:14-16).

Let’s look at some key scriptures that highlight the irrevocability of God’s covenants. These scriptures give us a way to pray for Israel during times of worship and intercession and at prayer meetings. When we prophetically declare them aloud, it shifts the atmosphere in the realm of the spirit.

He remembers His covenant forever, the word He commanded, for a thousand generations. The covenant He made with Abraham, the oath He swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit” (Psalm 105:8-11).

“I will bring back My exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and

drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them,” says the Lord your God (Amos 9:14-15).

This is what the Lord says, He who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and starts to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—the Lord Almighty is His name: “Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,” declares the Lord, “will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before Me…Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out, will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done,” declares the Lord ( Jeremiah 31:35-37).

But you, O mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit for My people Israel, for they will soon come home. I am concerned for you, and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown, and I will multiply the number of people upon you, even the whole house of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt (ezekiel 36:8-10).

I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all My heart and soul ( Jeremiah 32:41).

But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me. Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me” (Isaiah 49:14-16).
