Dear JVMI Partner and Friend,

With all that is going on around the world today, people are desperate to understand what is going on in the Middle East in the light of biblical prophecy. We need to make sense of it all. People who have never before asked questions about the times in which we live are reading everything they can that is relative to the 2012 Mayan prophecies and what the Bible actually says about the Last Days and Israel. They’re asking, “Where is Israel in regard to these tumultuous times?” “What happens if the U.S. stops supporting Israel?” “Are we living in the Tribulation?” “Will the world end in 2012?”

In response to some of these inquiries, we have dedicated this issue of our magazine to deal with the subject of Israel at the dawn of a new decade.

Unquestionably, Israel is the focal point of all the controversy. One of the greatest threats Israel is now facing is Iran’s threat to wipe the country off the map with nuclear weapons. And there is the menace of continuing negativity against Israel around the world. The U.S. faces a great deal of pressure to back away from Israel and support the Palestinians or risk losing their support in the ongoing coalition against international terrorism.

Many, if not most, of these nations are terrorist nations themselves that have a horrifying record of human rights abuse and persecution of their Jewish and Christian populations. They want to see a world without Israel and the United States on the globe.

The Bible is crystal clear that God has given the Land of Israel to the Children of Israel, and we must stand behind them, for they are “the apple of His eye.” We must stand with Israel, and as Believers, we must make our voices heard on this issue.

Our citizenship is not of this world, but of the world to come. Now is the time to return to the Lord, to get our lives in order, to draw closer to Yeshua (Jesus), and to educate ourselves about the Land of the Bible—Israel—and the pivotal role she plays in all of our lives. Our priority must be that His Kingdom come, His will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.

In this issue, in addition to my own article on the State of Israel’s current situation, we’ll hear from our friends, Bill Koenig, author and president of Koenig’s International News (http://watch.org), a daily news service with readers in 50 states and 79 countries; and our own Rabbi/Pastor Jack Zimmerman, an integral figure in our JVMI Speakers Bureau and frequent panelist on our monthly JVMI webcasts. Jack is a treasure trove of knowledge on the subject of Israel, the Middle East, and the signs of the times.

Israel. For those who embrace the Bible as the Word of God, this ancient Land is beloved, transcendent, holy…a precious

trust of the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For many others, it’s a Land of contention and strife, considered disputed (at best) or occupied territory.

With a total landmass smaller than the state of New Jersey and ranking approxi-mately 150 in size comparison in the world, one should wonder why the miniscule State of Israel garners such an inordinate amount of world attention. Israel is often front-page news and the focal point of major news and

media broadcasts, as well as the target of polarizing debates from town hall to world forums.

Israel is indeed a Land of contradictions. The only nation on earth where legitimate spoils of war—of defensive

war—have been returned to the aggressor and what remains is referred to as occupied territory; Israel continues to be castigated by much of the world for merely existing among her enemies as a tiny bastion of progressive democracy in the massive Arab Middle East.

Yet she steadily provides the world with a vastly inordinate measure of medical and scientific advances in research and development, and is a first-responder when there is a major disaster anywhere in the world, such as the devastating January 2010 Haiti earthquake—when Israel sent massive resourc-es, even providing the only operating room in Port-au-Prince in the initial days.

According to Genesis 15:18, God gave the land of Canaan to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their descendants—from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates—as their promised, covenant Land. He also warned them not to divide it, nor allow the worship of foreign gods to defile it (Joel 3:2; Zechariah 12-14; Numbers 33:52-56).

Israel was temporarily scattered to the four corners of the earth for her disobedience and suffered horrific curses described in Deuteronomy 28 for nearly two thousand years. God promises, however, in Leviticus 26:44 that He will not break covenant with Israel, nor utterly destroy her—by His Name. The miracle of 1948 saw the beginning of restoration with the remarkable rebirth of the State of Israel—not due to the Jewish People earning any special favor through repentance, but that God’s Name would be sanctified through keeping His Word.

“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus is what the Sovereign LORD says: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name…’” (Ezekiel 36:22 NIV).

From that moment, until this day, the tiny State of Israel has suffered repeated attacks—without provocation. The Arab nations seeking her destruc-tion have been open, vocal, and consistent with their proclamations of hatred and planned destruction for Israel. “We will drive the Jews into the sea…” was the declaration in 1948 when Arab nations attacked the fledgling State on every border, creating an Arab refugee tragedy that exists to this day. A powerful deception grips the minds and hearts of those who align themselves against Israel. Adonai says: “...whoever touches you [Israel] touches the apple of his eye” (Zechariah 2:8 NIV). From the fallacious concept of the very name and people group, “Palestinian,” to vilifying the Israelis—the vic-tims of continual violence—as the aggressors, a perverse and dangerous lie has been plied, setting Israel in the cross hairs of government, church, university, and nations. With this issue, we hope to arm you with truth and understanding that will help you stand firm for Israel, firm for Adonai and His Word.

The day-to-day and often, moment-to-moment situation in Israel is a complex problem for those of us in

Jewish ministry. To call the atmosphere tense is a massive understatement. Rumors of war haunt the shadows of nearly every conversation. Whispers of a major call-up of reserve forces for addi-tional training and preparation were becoming commonplace when I was there just a few months ago. Threats of renewed terrorist attacks haunt the dreams of every parent.

Many within the Israeli intelligence community believe that Iran is just months, and possibly even weeks away from finishing their first nuclear weapon. Fear of the Iranian madman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a nuclear weapon is almost palpable. For beloved Israel, Iran and its president pose a very dangerous threat to the survival of Jewish People—possibly the greatest threat since the Holocaust.

The Middle East is at a crossroads, but God is not surprised by these events.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

He knows the future, and the Scriptures teach us that He turns the hearts of kings (Proverbs 21:1). Although the United States has historically stood with Israel, a shift has taken place aloft the winds of change in America, making clear some-thing that has been true for longer than we care to believe: Israel’s destiny rests in her own hands.

There is little peace today in Jerusa-lem and Israel. Jewish Voice and other Messianic and humanitarian groups inside Israel are gathering support and formulating contingency plans for what may be coming. If the worst does happen, we must be prepared to help in whatever way is needed.

How are we to comprehend all that is happening there when we are constantly barraged with biased reports coming from most major media outlets? There are no easy answers, but we can consider some biblical perspectives:

God Loves both jew and arabGod loves Jewish People and Arabs equal-ly. For those of us who support Israel, we must remember that God is not “against” the Arabs, nor does He hate them. The Lord loves all of His creation and wants none to perish. Yeshua (Jesus) died for all people, Jew and Arab alike, and desires all to find everlasting life. We must pray faith-fully for the Lord to touch, heal, and reveal Himself to Israelis, Palestinians, Muslims, and even Islamic terrorists. We need to intercede for every man, woman, boy, and girl on the earth to be saved. This is the only way true peace and understanding can ever be found.

God Gave the Land to israeL God gave the Land to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Regardless of what the United Nations decides or decided over half a century ago, hundreds of Scriptures in the Bible are clear that the Land was given to the Children of Israel by

God as an everlasting inheritance. Hundreds of Scriptures beginning with Genesis chapters 12 and 15 make this truth crystal clear. Regardless of what any government decides, this is the bottom line—the Bible is the Jewish People’s Land deed to Israel. God said it and that settles it.

As Christians, we must believe, accept, and set ourselves in agreement with what the Scriptures teach. God, in His sovereign-ty, gave this Land to the Jewish People, and who are we to question His decision? While this does not mean that we should con-done all that Israel does, we must under-stand that this is an unconditional promise in God’s Word and support this divine decision. The psalmist said, “He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4).

in iran’s cross hairsCurrently, Israel’s greatest threat is Iran, a country of nearly 70 million people, of whom seven in ten are under the age of thirty. Statistics released from the CIA and the U.N. say that one in five Iranians lives below poverty level, and five million sur-vive on less than two dollars a day. Around seven percent of the population can be classified as radicals, who are bound together by a common cause.

Despite our government’s agenda to try and convince us to the contrary, funda-mental Islam is committed to world domi-nation. Anyone who is not a Muslim is an infidel. They are committed to Jihad, Holy War. For nearly a decade now, one of their immediate goals is the destruction of Israel. We don’t need to speculate about this. It was announced by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeini, “It is the mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to erase Isra-el from the map of the region.”

Iran’s President Ahmadinejad has stat-ed very publicly, “We don’t shy away from declaring that Islam is ready to rule the world…. We must believe in the fact that Islam is not confined to geographical bor-ders, ethnic groups, and nations. It’s a uni-versal ideology that leads the world to jus-tice…. We must prepare ourselves to rule the world.”

On Israel, his stand is unwavering: He has promised the world a Middle East with-out Israel. In his 2005 “World Without Zionism” speech, with reference to Israel, he spoke of Iran’s mandate to “eliminate this disgraceful stain [Israel] from the

Islamic world.” To supporters of Israel he warns, “Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury.”

The fact that Iran has enriched nuclear material and missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads to any destination in Israel only serves to heighten the serious-ness of the threat.

Clearly, Israel’s future hangs in the bal-ance. Yet, she will survive. God has pre-served the Jewish People not only because of His love for them, but because Israel plays a vital role in the return of His Son. Dozens of Bible passages testify to the important role of the Jewish People in the last days of planet earth. Yeshua himself said:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you des-olate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord’” (Matthew 23:37-39).

Clearly, Messiah was speaking to Jew-ish People who lived in the city of Jerusa-lem. Today, most continue to reject and deny Him. Tomorrow, they will see Him coming in power and glory as affirmed by the Prophet Zechariah: “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplica-tion. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him

as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a first-born son. On that day the weeping in Jeru-salem will be great, like the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo” (Zechariah 12:10-11).

Jerusalem will be filled with descen-dants of David when Yeshua returns—an impossibility before Israel was re-estab-lished in 1948 and highly implausible before Jerusalem was recaptured by Israeli forces in 1967.

There will be no peace until the Prince of Peace establishes true peace. Most Chris-tians are familiar with the exhortation to “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6). How do we pray? How can there ever be peace? The Bible says many will say “peace, peace,” and there will be no peace. The word peace in Hebrew is shalom and lit-erally means “to bring to completion.” God has a plan for this Land and this Peo-ple. It will come to pass in spite of the threats that are directed toward her. Ulti-mately, this plan includes the return of Yeshua (Jesus) to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

It has been said that Israel is God’s timepiece. If that is true, the hour must be growing late. Are we fast approaching the time of completion, when all Israel will be saved? “For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Isra-el until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved” (Romans 11:25-26 NKJV).

For beloved Israel, Iran and its president pose a very dangerous threat to the survival of Jewish People—possibly the greatest threat since the Holocaust.

Although the United States has historically stood with Israel, a shift has taken place aloft the winds of change in America, making clear something that has been true for longer than we care to believe: Israel’s destiny rests in her own hands.

We must pray for God’s plan to be fulfilled in this troubled Land, for the Messiah to be revealed in the hearts of Jews and “Palestinians” alike, and for His plan to be brought to completion, culminating in the Lord’s return to the earth. Only thenwill true peace be realized.

Could BenjaminNetanyahu Be the Israeli Prime Minister Who signs the Daniel 9:27 Covenant?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be the leader who agrees to the final biblical peace deal spoken of in Daniel 9:27—“He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offer-ing. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

No Israeli politician is better known. No Israeli leader is a stronger defender of his nation’s threats.

In his policy speech at the Begin-Sadat Center at Bar-Ilan Uni-versity on June 14, 2009, Netanyahu was superb, clever, reason-able and strategic. He attempted a very delicate political balancing act—which, for the most part, seemed to succeed. He calmed the Kadima Party and the Labor Party with his statement that he favors a Palestinian state, but he offered very challenging contingencies that must first be satisfied.

He satisfied Israel’s right-wing political parties on the state-ment of a unified (not divided) Jerusalem.

Members of the Likud Party who don’t want to see any of Israel’s biblical land given to the Palestinians were disgruntled about the talk of a Palestinian state, but they appeared satisfied that Netanyahu’s requirements for the Palestinians are all but impossible for them to meet.

He also enjoined Israel’s concerns and the moderate Arabs’ concerns about a nuclear Iran. This was a good strategy.

He said: • If we receive this guarantee regarding demilitarization

and Israel’s security needs, and if the Palestinians recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people, then we will be ready in a future peace agreement to reach a solution where a demilitarized Pales-tinian state exists alongside the Jewish state.

• If the Palestinians turn toward peace—in fighting terror, in strengthening governance and the rule of law, in educating their children for peace and in stopping incitement against Israel—we will do our part in making every effort to facilitate freedom of movement and access and to enable them to develop their econo-my.

• Above all else, the Palestinians must decide between the path of peace and the path of Hamas. The Palestinian Authority will have to establish the rule of law in Gaza and overcome Hamas. Israel will not sit at the negotiating table with terrorists who seek

ambassadors and heads of delegations that were in Jerusalem on Dec. 28, 2009, for the first-ever series of high-level briefings. He once again emphasized his conditions to a peace deal:

• Palestinian acceptance of Israel as a Jewish state.

• Demilitarization of any future Pal-estinian state.

Netanyahu said, “Recognizing Israel as a Jewish state is necessary for any agree-ment with the Palestinians that would lead to an end to the conflict. We want an end to the conflict,” he said. “That means the Pal-estinians must stop attempts to use a Pales-tinian state as a jumping-off point for fur-ther claims against Israel. No claim to flood Israel with refugees, which would mean the end of the Jewish state; and no irredentist claims to the Negev, Galilee or Israeli citi-zens, which would mean the dissolution of the Jewish state.”

Ha’aretz reported: Netanyahu said the situation in Lebanon, and the rearming of Hezbollah despite Security Council Resolu-tion 1701 prohibiting just that, proved that agreements on paper were ineffective.

“I am doubtful that anyone can do this except a real Israeli presence, Israeli forces,” he said, intimating that in any future agree-ment with the Palestinians, Israeli forces—not international ones—would have to be on the eastern border of a future Palestinian state to prevent it from importing arms and staging attacks against Israel.

Obama Admin threatens to withhold aid to Israel

American President Barack Obama’s Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, threat-ened in the first week of January to with-hold financial aid to Israel if they did not accept demanded concessions to get the stalled peace process back on track.

In an interview with Charlie Rose, Mitchell was asked what leverage the U.S.

has to get Israel to comply with Arab and international demands. He answered: “Under American law, the United States can withhold support on loan guarantees to Israel.”

Israel’s Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz quickly reacted, saying, “Israel had no intention of making use of the U.S. loan guarantees in the near future, as it had man-aged to raise enough funds on its own.”

Mitchell’s remarks came shortly after Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren rejected Washington’s attempt to place a firm two-year deadline on the peace process.

“In the past, attempts to impose time frameworks have not proved either realiz-able or helpful,” Oren told The Jerusalem Post. Previous deadlines have only increased the Palestinians’ refusal to meet their peace obligations, confident that Israel would be forced to comply regardless in order to meet the timetable.

Senator John McCain (Republican-Ari-zona) told a Jerusalem press conference on Sunday, Jan. 10, that he expects President Barack Obama to explicitly announce that his Administration is not planning to alter America’s policy regarding financial aid to Israel.

Senator Joe Lieberman (Independent Democrat-Connecticut) stated at the same press conference that even if Obama tried to use U.S. financial aid as leverage, Con-gress would never approve such a measure.

The Bible’s road map—the ultimate plan

God gave the land of Canaan to Abra-ham, Isaac and Jacob and their descendants when He said, “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates—the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kad-monites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Gergashites and Jebusites” (Genesis 15:18).

The Promised Land is not to be divid-ed; and the Bible said, “I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judg-ment against them concerning my inheri-tance, my people Israel, for they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land” (Joel 3:2). And that there will be consequences to those who attempt to divide the land of Israel (see Zechariah

12-14).We realize that Israel will eventually

agree to a final seven-year peace plan and that the false messiah will sponsor a peace plan that will be confirmed by the nations (Daniel 9:27).

The false messiah will come forward at the midway point to stop sacrifices on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem (Daniel 9:26-27, Daniel 11:31, and Matthew 24:15). The Great Tribulation will begin at that point and last for 42 months (Revelation 11:2, Revelation 12:6, Daniel 7:25, Revelation 12:14).

During the final 42 months, the Jews will mourn for the one they pierced (Zecha-riah 12:10). They will not see the Messiah until they say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 23: 39)

God will make Jerusalem a burden-some stone (Zechariah 12:3), and He will destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:9). At the end of the 42 months, there will be final battle for the city of Jerusalem—the battle of Arma-geddon (Zechariah 12-14).

We must continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6)—a peace that will only occur when Yeshua returns to Jerusalem to begin His 1,000-year millen-nial reign.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus! (Rev. 22:20)Netanyahu said, “recognizing Israel as a Jewish state is necessary for any agreement with the Palestinians that would lead to an end to the conflict. We want an end to the conflict.”

Can you be fooled? How easy would it be for someone to “pull the wool over your eyes?” In April 1998,

thousands of people were taken in by a promotional campaign devised by fast-food giant, Burger King. In a full page USA Today advertisement, the restaurant announced an addition to their menu—the “Left-Handed Whopper.” According to the ad, the new Whopper had the same ingredients as the regular whopper, except that the lettuce, hamburger, etc., had all been rotated 180 degrees to benefit the 32 million left-handed Americans who wanted to eat Whoppers just like everyone else.

The following day, thousands of left-handed folks came in to Burger King to request the new Whopper. There were also thousands of right-handed folks in line right behind them—requesting the original “right-handed” Whopper, and insisting it not be discontinued. We did mention this happened in April 1998? That would be April Fool’s Day, 1998. The whole thing was a hoax, yet by the thousands, people were taken in—never giving it a second thought.

Which just goes to show you that scores of otherwise rationally thinking people can be led to believe almost anything, if it’s presented convincingly enough.

people have been led to believe that in the tumultuous region of the Middle East, Isra-el is occupying Palestinian land and inflict-ing the same aggression, fear, and hurt against Palestinians that the Nazis inflicted against Jews in the Holocaust. These people insist the claims against Israel are true, but they never bother to check the validity of those claims. Do they actually line up with the facts? Not so much. Popular claims made against Israel in the name of Palestin-ian Independence could fill a small library, but what about the history-based facts, actual photographs, authentic documents and other indisputable evidence that favors Israel? I’ll borrow the phrase of a popular news network that claims, “We Report—You Decide.”

The number-one popular claim against

Israel remains: “If Israel would stop occupying the West Bank and Gaza, Palestinians wouldn’t have to deploy rockets and suicide bombers to defend themselves from Israeli aggression.”

“Israeli aggression” has nothing to do with Arab terrorism. On Sunday morning, February 22, 1948, in anticipation of Isra-el’s independence, a triple truck bomb was detonated by Arab terrorists on Jerusalem’s Ben Yehuda Street. Fifty-four people were killed and hundreds wounded. This event took place 19 years before Israel even had a presence in the West Bank or Gaza.

Arab terrorism is caused not by the “desperation” of “occupation,” but by the very thought of a Jewish State.

For years, western leaders have held summits, peace conferences, and made diplomatic visits in an effort to bring about peace between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. Many have tried; all have failed. They have used what they thought were common sense approaches.

Yet, as recently as one year ago, some of the bloodiest conflicts in the region have taken place. In response to unrelenting rocket attacks from the Gaza strip, Israel unleashed massive air attacks against militant Hamas forces. More than 1,200 Palestinians died. Currently there is a ceasefire, but in the Middle East, everyone knows that a ceasefire is tenuous at best—a

time for Arab forces to regroup and rearm. Hamas will continue to attack Israel

and no one will say a word, yet the moment Israel responds, it will be the target of worldwide condemnation. And just as has been done throughout every ceasefire, Hamas and other terrorist groups will use this time to acquire even greater numbers of rockets so they can attack Israel even harder the next time. This is no secret. Hamas leaders themselves have publicly said this is their agenda during a ceasefire.

How do the conflicts start? Why do they continue? Who’s really to blame?

In 2005, Israel pulled out of Gaza. That means, all Jewish citizens left entire towns, beautiful homes, and businesses to give the Arabs a completely Jew-free Gaza. (The Nazis called it judenrein—”free of all Jews”.) The Jews became refugees in Israel. Since that time, Hamas has launched more than 6,000 rockets at Israel. Why? The Arabs asked for land—for the Jews to leave—they were given 100 percent of what they asked for in that region—so why are they attacking the Jews on their borders in Israel-proper?

Did you see this reported on your evening news? It seems the media only comes on the scene when Israel fires back to defend itself—painting Israel as the aggressor. What would the U.S. do if Mexico declared we had no right to exist and started shooting rockets into our country? We would likely take strong military action against Mexico until the attacks stopped. We would not wait for four years. That’s exactly what Israel is forced to do and yet they get criticized for trying to protect themselves. We wouldn’t allow anyone to shoot at us. Why should they?

Indeed, the reason that there’s no peace in the Middle East is because every time things are peaceful, Hamas starts attacking and initiating violence. Israel has never been the one to start aggression. Here’s the definition of a ceasefire: Israel ceases, and the Arabs continue to fire. Only

the return of Jesus will bring peace to the region and to the world.

And then, of course, there is the side of those who favor the Palestinian cause. They claim: “It is shocking how the Israelis continue their propaganda of being under constant rocket fire.” “What about the sea, air, and land attacks? And the occupation over the last 60 years?” “Israel is occupying Palestinian land.” Ask anyone, if someone invades your land, won’t you fight back any way you can?

“Israel is a terrorist country.” “Hamas is the oppressed party fighting for their rights and land. Israel is a bully operating on the blind Jewish, ‘We are the Chosen People’ ideology. They are no different from the Nazis. Our U.S. tax dollars are supporting this terror. Write your representatives and demand that they cut funding to Israel.”

You can see how passionate the arguments are on both sides. Both sides say the land belongs to them. Obviously one of the two sides is wrong. Is there a way to find out who is right? Of course there is. Of two things we can be certain, history and the Bible, the Word of God. Neither of them lie. But if you don’t know your history, it’s easy to believe the lie.

Let me make the truth easy for you to uncover. First let’s look at the word Palestinian itself. What is the origin of that word? One of the popular and often-told stories in Jewish history is where the Roman Emperor Titus and his army came into Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple. About three years later, the Roman army came up Mount Masada where there was a Jewish community that was trying to avoid the Romans.

Rather than being killed by the Romans, they all took their own lives. Many of us know about Masada. But there is a later story that many of us do not know and it happened in the year 132. Then

Roman emperor Hadrian changed the name of the city of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina, and he changed the name of Israel to Syria-Palestina. Palestina was the Roman word for “Philistine.” And knowing that the Philistines were Israel’s fiercest enemy from history until then, Hadrian wanted to degrade the Jews by naming their country after their worst rivals.

One of the claims made to the land today by Palestinians is that they are the descendants of the original Philistines; therefore, they were in the land first—before the Jews. “It’s our land, you Jewish People,” was their mantra, “and you can’t have it back. We want it for ourselves!”

Now that might be looked at as a fairly convincing argument, except for several major flaws, including this one in Amos 1:8 that says God Himself would cause the Philistines to become extinct. When God makes a promise, He keeps it. God made the promise, and God kept the promise. Because 600 years before the religion of Islam came to be, the Philistines were gone for good.

The point is, if you say that you descend from a particular people group and that group was long ago made extinct, it’s kind of tough to have descendants from an extinct group of people. It simply is not there. But if the Palestinians didn’t come from the Philistines, where did they come from?

The facts are these—there has never been a sovereign land called Palestine. Jerusalem has never been their capital. There has never been a Palestinian language. There has been no Palestinian culture, nor has there ever been a Palestinian people. But don’t believe me as a Jew because I say it. I’m only quoting the Palestinian leaders who say it themselves.

that published an interview in 1977 with Palestine Liberation Organization leader Zuheir Mohsen (1936-1979). His comments were as follows. “The Palestinian people do not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means of continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity.

“In reality there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. It is only for political and tactical reasons that we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people. Since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people’ to oppose Zionism.” (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuheir_Mohsen.Trouw Interview.)

This is shocking! The Palestinians themselves admit that the whole idea of a Palestinian people is a lie!

Now, today’s Palestinians are also what are known as Muslims. Muslims follow the religion of Islam. It is one of the fastest growing religions today. In fact, one out of every five people on this planet follows the religion of Islam. Their prophet is Moham-med. Their holy book is known as the Koran, which they fully believe is the inspired word of their god, who they call Allah. In the Koran, it says that the Muslims were the original inhabitants of the Land that we refer to as Israel.

Their Koran says that Allah promised the Land to them through Abraham and his son, Ishmael. Muslims believe that Abraham and Ishmael were Muslim as well and so they say that the Land, according to their god, is rightfully theirs.

Not only that, Muslims and even many Christians believe that since the Land was promised to Abraham’s descendants, both sides have a legitimate claim to it.

Now just a side note here. Before we get to that claim, did you know that the Mus-lim holy book, the Koran, says that Israel belongs to the Jews? That’s right. Chapters in the Koran are known as surahs. If you go to surah 17:102-203 from the Koran, it says: “Pharaoh sought to scare the Israelites out of the land of Israel but Allah drowned Pharaoh together with all who were with

him. And then Allah said to the Israelites, ‘Dwell you Israelites in the land of Israel and when the promise of the hereafter comes to be fulfilled, Allah shall assemble the Israelites all together in the land of Isra-el.’”

It’s in their holy book! Why aren’t they following it? Well, those comments were made by their prophet Mohammed when he was receiving revelations in a cave during the time he was living in the city of Mecca. But, when he got kicked out of Mecca and later moved to Medina and started preaching on the streets that he was God’s holy prophet and apostle, people were inclined to go and take a look.

When people started listening to Mohammed, the Jews said, “Wait a minute! He’s not quoting Torah. He’s a false prophet.” The Christians said, “He’s not talking about Jesus. He’s a false prophet!” And after the Jews and Christians rejected Mohammed’s message, all of a sudden, Allah’s comments in the Koran about the Jews and Christians weren’t so nice anymore.

In fact, there’s a comment in there that says, “Do not take the Jews or Christians as friends, for in the hereafter, they will be among the losers.”

You don’t need a land dispute to justify your hatred—your god is already doing that for you. But if you are a Palestinian, you do need and you will use revisionist history such as this claim from the Arab lands. Today’s Arab Muslims say that when Rome invaded Jerusalem, every last Jew left Israel and effectively deserted the Holy Land. Therefore, any claim that Jewish People say they have to the Land was given

up at that time. While many Jews did flee the city of

Jerusalem for their lives, they didn’t leave Israel. They simply migrated to another city in Israel where they could live in safety. That town was called Yavneh, the place where rabbinic commentaries come from, writings of the Rabbis, even the Talmud, and the fact that we have those great works today proves that the Jewish People never left.

Who came to take over Israel next? After the Romans were there for a while and then the Byzantines, the Muslims invaded it. They actually made a deal with the Jews, saying, “You Jews help us defeat the Persians, and when we start ruling here, we’ll let you back into Jerusalem.” As we Jewish people say, “Such a deal.” So we did it. We helped them out. We came back into Jerusalem, and at first, Jewish People were treated fairly well. It didn’t last long, because when you don’t believe in the Muslim prophet, you are known as a dhimmi, an Arab word that refers to “its non-Islamic population that live in Islamic-conquered lands.” You’re a second-class citizen!

persecuted and forced to wear yellow badges in the shape of the Star of David so that they could be distinguished from Muslims. Sound familiar? This is 1,000 years before the Holocaust when Hitler would again force Jews to wear such badges. Where do you think he got the idea?

Muslim rule over Israel lasted until around 1100 when the Crusades came in from the East. Muslims would later regain control and again be kicked out by the Ottoman Turks that ruled until 1918. Arab Muslims lost a lot of their glory long ago when their empire fell. In their effort to regain that glory, they have tried changing history by throwing in violence and protests to convince the world that they got short-changed along the way.

Unfortunately, so many people never go back to study history. Instead they reason that the Arabs must be right or they wouldn’t be so willing to sacrifice their sons and daughters.

Today Palestinians claim that what happened to them next was a travesty, and it’s another key reason they believe Israel belongs to them. The vast empire of Great Britain wanted to add Israel to its collection. In order to do that, Britain needed to defeat those Ottoman Turks who were ruling Israel, but they couldn’t do it without help from the Arabs. They knew the Arabs wanted to have their own homeland, so they made a deal.

They promised if the Arabs would help them defeat the Ottoman Turks, they’d give the Arabs their very own land. So the Arabs helped, believing that “the Land” would be Israel. Wrong! In the end, Britain said, “Thanks for your help in our victory, Arabs.

Here’s your land, Jordan.” The Arabs felt they got short changed and massive Arab rioting against Jews broke out in Israel. The Jews were claiming it was their land, and the Arabs saw this as a threat to their sovereign claim.

It’s good to see what the biblical view of the Land is. Just as Muslims have their holy book, we Christians and Jews have ours, the Bible. Like the Koran, the Bible says that Abraham’s descendants would inherit the Land through Isaac and Jacob—not Ishmael.

Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.”

—Genesis 17:17-19 NIV

So the Land Covenant made with God and Abraham would extend from Abraham through Isaac and Jacob, but not through

Ishmael. The Bible does promise that Ishmael would also become a great nation, but that nation would not be Israel. These are the words of the very Word of God itself. Of that there is no dispute.

Think about it, Ishmael was to have his own land. If God’s intent was to have Ish-mael share the Land, then why did God kick Ishmael out and tell him he would have to set up shop elsewhere? Clearly the Land belongs to those who descended from the Twelve Tribes—the Jews. The Lord spoke to the prophet Jeremiah, saying:

“The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

—Jeremiah 31:31-33

Clearly the Bible says that though Israel broke covenant with God, He did not cast them out as His Covenant People. He simply extended a new covenant to them in order that their blessings would remain intact. God’s covenant promises are eternal.

Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs…and when I see the blood, I will pass over you….”

Passover is a holiday rich with revela-tion and insight into the character and nature of the God of Israel. It

clearly illustrates that He not only can save and redeem people, but does. Indeed, it is a momentous event for all mankind. Bibli-cally speaking, it is by far the most signifi-cant holiday of the year, for it is the Pass-over that marks the beginning of God’s redemptive plan for mankind.

To non-Jews, Passover is probably the best known of the biblical Feasts. Any Christian who has even a moderate com-prehension of the Old Testament will cer-tainly understand the connection between Passover and the sacrificial death of the Messiah.

Most remember how Moses asked Pha-raoh to free the Israelites, who had become slaves in Egypt. When the Egyptian leader refused to listen, God sent a number of plagues on the land of Egypt, including an infestation of frogs, swarms of locusts, blood, hail, and darkness. The Egyptians suffered terribly, but Pharaoh remained adamant in his opposition to let the Israel-ites leave Egypt.

Finally, God gave instructions to Moses that every Hebrew family was to sacrifice a lamb without defect. After the lamb had been killed, its blood was to be placed on the top and two sides of the doorframe of their house. At midnight on the specified day, the Lord struck down every firstborn child in Egypt who lived in a house that was not marked with the blood of a lamb. The houses belonging to the Israelites were passed over; thus the name of Passover was set aside to commemorate this great occa-sion in the history of Israel—the event that finally brought their freedom.

God commanded that all future genera-tions sacrifice the Passover lamb in spring-time on the 14th of Aviv. The festival always included a public sacrifice of a national Passover lamb. As the lamb was led to its death, crowds of people would line the streets of Jerusalem, singing joyously as they remembered their ancestors’ deliver-ance from Egypt. One passage that was sung came from Psalm 118: “O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Psalm 118:25-26).

It was during Passover week that Jesus made His final entrance into Jerusalem, fol-lowing the same route that the Passover lamb had taken. Crowds placed palm

branches in front of Him and celebrated as He passed, riding on a donkey to show that He was coming in humility and peace.

For four days, the Passover lamb was to be kept in public view so that anyone who wished to examine the animal could do so, ensuring that it was without defect as com-manded. Meanwhile, the Pharisees and Sadducees were trying desperately to find fault with Yeshua, but could not do so. In fact, Pontius Pilate, who agreed to have the Messiah executed, washed his hands in front of the crowd and told them, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your responsibility” (Matthew 27:24).

There are many parallels between the death of Yeshua and the sacrifice of the Passover lamb. For example, the blood stains on the Savior’s head, hands and feet matched the blood placed on the door-frame of every Israelite house in Egypt. Another is that it was forbidden for any of the Passover lamb’s bones to be broken (Exodus 12:46) and, similarly, none of Messiah’s bones were broken, although Roman soldiers did break the legs of the two thieves who were crucified on either side of Him (John 19:31-37). Additionally, according to some Bible historians, the Passover lamb was sacrificed about 3 p.m., the same time when Yeshua cried out in a loud voice and died (Matthew 27:45-50).

Although Yeshua was without sin, it pleased God to bruise Him and to lay upon Him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53). Yesh-ua said, “I am the door; if anyone enters by Me, he will be saved” (John 10:9 NKJV). Why? Because He is the Passover Lamb who has shed His blood in order that we may apply it to the doorposts of our heart, and the Angel of Death passes over.

The Passover service takes us through the story of the deliverance of the Hebrew chil-dren by the hand and grace of God. This deliverance is not only out of the land of Egypt, but also from death—by the blood of the Passover Lamb. As you celebrate Passover, you will see this great miracle and gain a greater understanding of God’s love for mankind.

Yeshua (Jesus) is the Jewish Messiah. He is the Passover Lamb, given to the Jewish People from God and to the world through His atonement. When God sees the blood applied to the doorposts of our heart, the Angel of Death will pass over. This is the declaration of Passover: the grace and power of God unto salvation!

From peacekeeping to democracy-building, from Kosovo to Namibia to East Timor, the UN is indispensable—and worthy of America’s engagement and support.

But unfair treatment of one country, Israel, mars the UN’s noble mission. Of all 188 member countries, only Israel—in a glaring example of inequality—is ineligible to serve on the Security Council, the world body’s key deliberative group.

To be eligible, a country must belong to one of the five regional groups. Israel should be part of the Asian bloc, but Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and others have shamefully prevented its entry for decades.

Of all UN members only Israel is denied the right to belong to any regional

group. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called for an end to this injustice and “the normalization of Israel’s status within the United Nations.” As a temporary measure, Israel has sought acceptance in the West European and Others Group (WEOG), which includes not only the democracies of Western Europe but also Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. The U.S., Australia, Canada and Norway have supported Israel’s admission to WEOG, but the 15-member European Union refuses to act.

Without membership in a regional group, Israel can never be elected to serve on the Security Council or, for that matter, on the other most important bodies of the UN system.

Does not Romans 3:23 say that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God? Why would God remove His covenant blessings from one people group because they were sinful, in order to bestow those very same blessings on another group of equally sinful people? It doesn’t make sense.

It’s amazing to hear people like Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying Israel needs to be wiped off the face of the earth. I say, “Be careful, Mr. President, get in line. You’re not the first, and you won’t be the last.”

While Britain had managed to kick out those Ottoman Turks with help from both Jews and Arabs, in 1947 the Brits also tried to manage a harmonious relationship between the two groups. They proposed that Arabs could live peacefully with Jews, with Great Britain trying to oversee it—a recipe for disaster! In fact, in 1947 after attempting this for some 20 years, Britain finally raised her hands up in the air and said, “We don’t have a clue. Who could possibly come along to help us bring about peace between Arabs and Jews? Who would be fair to both sides? How about the United Nations?” What a revelation.

So in 1947, the United Nations approved Resolution 180 in order to partition the Land of Israel, dividing Israel between Arabs and Jews. The land allocated to Arabs consisted of all of the highlands except for Jerusalem, plus one third of the coastline. The land designated to the Jews consisted of three fertile valley lands, the Shomron, the Jezreel, and the Jordan. The bulk of territory that went to the Jews turned out to be the desert, the Negev, which back then was not believed to be suitable for any type of agriculture nor development. Not surprisingly, nobody wanted that.

There was no Arab claim made to it until they started seeing that Jews were growing crops in the desert! They began to see trees and fields also! The Jewish state also had sole access to the Red Sea then. The vast majority of Jews accepted the 1947 plan, but the Arabs rejected it saying, in effect, that all of the land was theirs according to the deal they’d made with Great Britain. Anything less was unacceptable.

And the battle continues to rage. Sadly, many professing Christians

declare that Israel is occupying Arab land.

But a Christian should support what the Bible says. And the Bible says that Israel is not the occupier here. In fact, the biblical borders of Israel can be found in Numbers 34. Today, Israel is slightly less than the size of Rhode Island. It should be four times that size! Israel once included parts of Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, a section of Saudi Arabia, and part of Egypt. The Land that is actually referred to as Israel today is only 25 percent of what they claim they are rightfully entitled to.

Both the Arabs and the Jews helped Britain to oust the Ottoman Turks. The Arabs thought Israel would be their reward, but Britain never made any such deal with the Arabs. They did, however, make that deal with the Jews. To the Jews, Britain said, “You’re real good friends with the United States. And we could use their help to kick out these Ottoman Turks. If you were willing to convince the U.S. to help us, we’d give you your own land.” Sound familiar? Promises were made on both sides.

But in 1917 Britain fulfilled that part of the agreement by issuing what was called the Balfour Declaration, a letter written by Britain’s Lord Balfour, stating that the Jews were entitled to have their own land. It reads in part: “His Majesty’s government view with favour the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.”

The Arabs were outraged, and the battle has been raging ever since. Who is the occupier? Whose land is it? As many know May 14, 1948 was a pivotal date in Israel’s history—the day Israel was recognized by the world as its own sovereign nation, fulfilling two prophecies in Isaiah 66:7-8. The first says Israel would be born in one day. And the second says after the birth, then the labor pains would come.

What could this mean? I had to take a closer look at what Isaiah 66 was talking about.

Israel was born in one day. As dawn broke in the early morning hours of May 14, 1948, Israel was still under British mandate. The last British troops left on ships that day from the Port of Haifa. Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, convened a council meeting later in the day that overwhelmingly voted that Israel would be its own sovereign state—going from British rule to independence in just one day. Just like Isaiah said it would happen. What about those labor pains? This happened too. Because following the birth of Israel’s independence, seven Arab nations declared war against her, and the pains have not stopped since.

Arab radio broadcasted a message to Arabs living in Israel. “All our Arab brothers and sisters,” they said, “tomorrow we will liberate you from Israel. They are occupying our land. We need your support. Be advised to leave your homes, run to the borders, and fight Israel with us! We will emerge victorious. Not only will you be able to go back into Israel and to your own home and your own land, but you will also inherit the home and the land of your Israeli neighbor.”

Simultaneously, Israeli radio broad-casted a message in Arabic to those same Arabs living among them, saying: “Please don’t run to the borders and fight against us. We consider you our brothers, our sis-ters, our friends, our family. We will protect you. You have just as much right to be here as we do. Just do not run to the borders to fight against us.”

But thousands upon thousands of Arabs who were living in Israel ran for the borders. When the battle came, Israel handily defeated each and every one of her enemies. Those Arabs who had left their land later claimed they were refugees, who Israel had kicked out. No! No! No! After their side had lost, they said, “We might have lost, but let’s try again in a couple of years to go back home.”

What a novel idea, but when they returned to the Israeli border, police stopped them. “Excuse me. What are you doing?”

“What do you mean? I live here.”“Not anymore.”“Well, what do you want me to do?”“Go to Jordan or Lebanon or Syria.

After all, you were willing to risk your life for those countries. Surely they would welcome you.”

The Arabs went to Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Iran, and they all said, “You can’t come here. It was never our goal to absorb you into our country. Our goal was to defeat Israel and have you colonize it for us as a new Arab nation, but since that

didn’t happen, go somewhere else.”For the next 60 years, these people

lived in refugee camps. The Palestinians said, “We were displaced. That land is our land. Our goings forth are from days of old. We are the descendants of the Philistines. Here is our flag. Here is our military. Here are our police.”

And the world is buying it hook, line, and sinker. This is a spiritual battle. Their

holy book says, “In order for you to honor me, you must kill every last Jew on the face of the earth.” And in the writings of the Muslims, something called the hadith, it says, “Oh look, there is a tree. The trees will cry out, ‘There is a Jew behind the tree, come and kill him.’”

This had nothing to do with land—it didn’t then, and it doesn’t now.

Peace will only come when Jesus returns. Meantime, let us be sharp and astute enough not to believe the lies. Let us not support those who seek to give away the Land. Let us not support those who in a number of Christian denominations have either already issued or are on the verge of issuing resolutions calling for divestment with companies doing business in Israel. This nonsense has to stop!

n Nuclear detector Set Up on Iran BorderDECEMBEr 4, 2009—Israeli officials believe the international commu-nity is “starting to come to the understanding that Iran has been lying to everybody” about its nuclear intentions, a senior Israeli diplomatic official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

The statement followed news of a Un agency completing a nuclear test detection station in Turkmenistan, just a few kilometers from the Iranian border.

The PS44 installation is the 337th facility of the International Moni-toring System. It was set up by the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty Orga-nization (CTBTO), a network of stations across the globe that monitors the atmosphere to detect nuclear blasts by countries secretly testing nuclear weapons.

PS44 is expected to be operational by 2010, once it has been tested.There have been more than 2,000 nuclear test explosions worldwide

since the Manhattan Project’s Trinity trial in the US in July 1945. The last detonation occurred May 25, when north Korea said it conducted a test, an event that was detected at 61 of the CTBTO’s seismic stations.

While the Turkmenistan site is part of a larger network, the opening of a station near Iran may signify that “the Iranian issue is finally gaining ground in the international community,” according to the Israeli official.

More proof of this came when the board of governors of the Interna-tional atomic Energy agency (IaEa) voted to censure Iran, on november 27, for failing to cooperate in international efforts to verify its claims that its nuclear program has peaceful intentions.

“Luckily, Iran itself is decimating the efforts of even its most vocifer-ous defenders to help it avoid international criticism,” the Israeli official said.

The diplomatic fallout from the november 27 IaEa resolution contin-ued to be felt on Thursday as the United States warned Iran that time was running out to avoid sanctions due to its nuclear program.

according to White House spokes-man robert Gibbs, Tehran’s deadline was

the end of the year for responding to international demands to halt en-richment and allow more complete inspection of its nuclear facilities.

Iran has ignored a deal offered by the Western powers that would have Iran send its low-enriched uranium abroad for enriching or use in peace-ful energy production. Gibbs said it was “pretty clear” that the Iranians were backing out of that agreement.

also Thursday Iran’s foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, said the resolution would “not stop Iran from developing its nuclear program,” in the words of the state-run news agency Press Tv, which was quoting a Thursday statement by Iran’s foreign ministry.

Mottaki said Tehran was fully cooperating with the IaEa and that the Geneva-based agency has consistently verified the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. He accused Western powers of politicizing the issue.

China, too, which voted in favor of the resolution censuring Iran, urged Teheran to cooperate with the IaEa and to resolve the dispute with the inter-national watchdog quickly.

according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang, “China’s vote was consistent with its position on the Iran nuclear issue, which urged the parties involved to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation,” the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Qin added that China would push forward the process of a diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue.

Iranian President Mahmoud ahmadinejad declared that his country will enrich uranium to a much higher level than previously planned - a fresh rejection of the international efforts to curb the country’s nuclear program.

“I declare here that with the grace of god, the Iranian nation will pro-duce 20 percent fuel and anything it needs itself,” ahmadinejad told a cheer-ing crowd in the central city of Isfahan.

ahmadinejad said Tehran was ready to further enrich some of its pres-ent stockpile—now at 3.5 percent to 20 percent, the grade needed to create fuel for a small medical research reactor in the Iranian capital.

Meanwhile, Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili met with Hamas leaders during a visit to Syria on Thursday. The Palestinian party’s deputy head Moussa abu Marzouk said they discussed Palestinian affairs but did not provide any further details.

n Israeli researcher Closing in on CancernOvEMBEr, 2009— an Israeli research scientist has accidentally discovered a chemical compound that eradicates cancer cells without harming normal cells in the process. The substance may prove to be the long sought-after “holy grail” in the wider field of cancer treatment. For now, it shows promise as a specific weapon against breast cancer.

Prof. Malka Cohen-armon, a biochemist at Tel aviv University, tells IS-raEL21C that the compound is a component of a family of drugs developed 10 years ago to preserve nerve cells stressed by a stroke or inflammation. But further study showed the drugs were inappropriate for their intended use, and they were released only for research purposes.

“We found that those drugs somehow turn on a mechanism in cancer cells that causes them to die within 48 to 72 hours without harming normal tissue,” explains Cohen-armon, a professor in the neufeld Cardiac research Institute of TaU’s Sackler School of Medicine. “In fact, the normal cells con-tinue to proliferate even in the presence of the drug.”

In experiments with female mice, the compound was injected with several types of cancerous tissue, particularly breast-cancer cells. Cohen-armon was amazed to discover that the substance suspends cell division in both cancerous and normal body cells, but while cancer cells never recover, normal cells are back in business within 12 hours.A breakthrough that needs support

at present Cohen-armon and her team are restricted to exploring the effects of this drug on breast cancer alone as the drug is patented to a US pharmaceutical corporation until 2017. The university’s technology transfer company, ramot, has secured a usage patent enabling it to develop the drug to treat only breast cancer, and is reliant on the US company’s continuing goodwill.

“These experiments, if undertaken by a pharmaceutical company, can be completed in a shorter time because they have more resources. So we must find a company interested collaborating with us in developing this drug.”

Cohen-armon has worked at the university for 26 years. “I am inter-ested in basic research, but now and then we have a breakthrough when I notice something that could be applicable,” she says.

JanUary 15, 2010 a revolutionary, dissolvable wound dressing developed at Tel aviv University could help reduce deaths caused by burn-related infec-tions. ScienceDaily.com reports that currently, 70 percent of those with severe burns die from related infec-tions. Prof. Meital Zilberman of Tel aviv University’s Department of Bio-medical Engineering has developed a new wound dressing that is filled with antibiotics and other healing agents, and that dissolves when the wound is healed.

The dressing is based on fibers that Prof. Zilberman engineered. a study published in the Journal of Biomedical Materials research shows that the new dressing can eradicate infection-causing bacteria after only two days. “We’ve developed the first wound dressing that both releases antibi-otic drugs and biodegrades in a controlled manner,” Prof. Zilberman said. “It solves current mechanical and physical limitations in wound-dressing tech-niques, and gives physicians a new and more effective platform for treating burns and bedsores.”

The ScienceDaily report explains that Prof. Zilberman designed the dressing to mimic skin and the way it protects the body. “Wound dressings must maintain a certain level of moisture while acting as a shield,” she ex-plained. “Like skin, they must also enable fluids from the wound to leave the infected tissue at a certain rate. It can’t be too fast or too slow. If too fast, the wound will dry out and it won’t heal properly. If too slow, there’s a real risk of increased contamination.”

The dressing thus combines positive mechanical and physical proper-ties with what medical researchers call “a desired release profile of antibiot-ics.”

Prof. Zilberman is now starting the early stages of clinical trials on ani-mal models. So far, her wound dressing has passed physical and mechanical tests in vitro and in bacterial inhibition tests in the laboratory. She is also seeking a strategic partner to co-develop the research and take it to the commercial stage.

JanUary 14, 2010—With more than 100,000 people feared dead in Haiti, Israeli relief teams of over 200 people headed to earthquake ravaged Haiti in Foreign Ministry-leased air-planes. among the Israeli teams on their way to provide humanitarian aid in Haiti is a medical team of 12 from IsraaID, an early response relief group that springs into action after natural disasters, as well as some 200 others called on by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin netanyahu.

The Ministry of Foreign affairs issued this announcement: “Israel is doing all in its power to help the people of Haiti cope with the disas-ter in their country. a 220-person delegation, headed by Ministry of

Foreign affairs officials, will leave this evening for Port-au-Prince on two Boeing 747 jets leased from El al by the IDF.

“The relief package includes a Home Front Command field hospital and rescue unit, as well as teams from Magen David adom and Israel Police.” Only the day before, Israel’s prime minister ordered the country’s Defense Ministry, Foreign Ministry and Public Security Ministry officials to gather a team to help the Caribbean nation deal with its humanitarian crisis.

Though the phone lines were down in Haiti, the Is-raelis were able to establish contact with amos radian, the nearby Israel ambassador to the Dominican republic. He has since been instructed to proceed to Haiti to report on the situation there, according to government reports.

Usually, it is IsraaID that steps in at the Ministry’s behest, providing invaluable medical as-sistance wherever tragedy strikes.

n Israeli Tech for Better Airport SecurityJanUary 6, 2010—new biometric airport technology from Israel unveiled yester-day could reduce airport security checks and make flights safer.

Machines that recognize passengers using a biometric triple identifica-tion system have been installed at Israel’s international airport.

The biometric scanners are similar in size and appearance to cash ma-chines. They first scan the passport, then the fingerprint and finally the Uni-pass card that contains personal details and allows airport security guards to access information about the traveler.

The machines are fitted with cameras that snap a picture of the traveler

and compare it to the card. Travelers then answer basic security questions.Two hundred and fifty travelers have already signed up for the system,

which is currently only available to Israel’s flagship airline El al’s business class passengers.

The homegrown technology developed by the airport authority is the first of its kind. While the Unipass system will not replace human checkers, it will make their job faster and more efficient. It is currently being tested and if successful will be installed at all Israeli ports and borders next year.

Israel has long been a world leader in airport security, as a result of hi-jackings and other attacks in past decades.

The very thought of “Israel” can trans-port us to a foreign and mystical land. We are enamored with its beauty and power; captivated by its historical and spiritual meaning; fixated upon our minds’ fantas-tic images of an exotic and distant world. We send it money and humanitarian aid, we lobby for its support by our policymak-ers, and we pray for its peace, petition for its prosperity, and intercede for its salva-tion. And yet…

… there is no such place as a land called “Israel.” It is a figment of our imagi-nation.

Yes, there is a God-given, Jewish homeland, and it lies in the Middle East.

Yes, there is a modern State of Israel that many mistakenly fancy as “Palestine.”

Yes, half of all the world’s fourteen million Jews live on a very real parcel of land only twice the size of the state of Rhode Island…

… yet Scripture never calls this place “Israel”—and the mere thought of such a place is obstructing our view. Indeed, “Israel” is not a place at all, but a people—and you can find us almost anywhere… including the Land that belongs to Israel, promised to us by AdonAi our God.

“Israel” is not a place, but the name given to our father, jacob (bqo[]y", Ya’akov),

whose all-night wrestling match with God pictures the Jewish peoples’ struggle to follow only Him (Genesis 35:10).

“Israel” is not a place, but the birth-right of the sons of Jacob, whom AdonAi set apart as His chosen people, though we are scattered throughout the nations of the earth. (Exodus 19:5-6 NASB)

“Israel” is not a place, but the spiritual heritage of every single Jewish person—the one who works in the cubicle across the aisle; the one who lives in the house down the street.

don’t forget your own neighborhood, or the Messianic Jewish ministry from which you receive spiritual nourishment.

I have often written in this space about the Treasure Principle. It comes from a small book of the same title written by

author/speaker Randy Alcorn. The foundation for the Treasure Principle is found in Matthew 6:19-20—“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Yeshua is teaching us not to lay up treasures here on earth that can be destroyed, stolen, and lost. But rather to invest in the Kingdom of God and reap the blessings for all eternity.

In this Scripture, Yeshua teaches us to stop storing the “stuff” we think we have to have in all the wrong places. In today’s consumer-driven (emphasis on the word consume) society, it is so easy to store up treasure in places where “moth and rust corrupt.”

I use cell phones as my example here of storing up treasure in the wrong place. You may have had a similar experience. In the years since I purchased my first Motorola “brick” mobile cellular phone in the early ’90s (I confess, it was preceded by a bag phone, which only counts as a mobile unit in a parallel universe), I have owned countless cell phones of every brand, style, model, and size. I have owned flip phones, flop phones, smart phones, and dumb phones. I’ve owned phones that have e-mail, address books, task managers, MP3 players, Internet connections, games, cameras, voice recorders, calculators, maps, video cameras, Facebook, Twitter… and the one I have now even has GPS and three translations of the Bible, not to mention text messaging and an application for tracking the whereabouts of the cell phones of members of my family.

Shheez! All I really needed to do was

make a phone call without looking for a pay phone. (Try to find one of those now.) I have probably spent thousands of dollars on these weapons of mass destruction to my eternal savings account. And the assault continues. Although the Blackberry I currently use has all of the above-mentioned accoutrements, the iPhone, and the new generation of Android phones are beckoning me like a siren’s song. I will be strong.

As Alcorn says, earthly treasures aren’t bad; it’s just that they won’t last. The shelf life of new technology (cell phones are a prime example) is about two months. Then somebody comes out with some other new whiz-bang feature that you just have to have. (According to them!) Our storing place for our treasure needs to be in heavenly things, not temporal ones.

Alcorn’s point is that you can’t take it with you, but you can send it ahead.

If we invest our treasure (which includes time and talent, by the way) in God things, Yeshua promises our gifts won’t be corrupted by moth or rust, or stolen by a thief. When I give to my church, or provide help to the poor, when I volunteer for a missionary endeavor (like our India or Ethiopia medical/humanitarian outreaches), or when I support a ministry like Jewish Voice, I am investing in the Kingdom of Heaven and planting seed in soil that is fertile and will yield much fruit—gifts that will have lasting value, an investment that will never stop paying dividends.

I’m tired of the word “luck.” I think it is a shame that even the conservative media thinks that the “briefs’ bomber” didn’t blow the plane out of the sky on Christmas Day “because we were lucky.” While Amer-ica may be under judgment, God has thus far remained our Homeland Security Direc-tor. That is not to say He couldn’t remove His hand at any time. Evil did have its way at Fort Hood.

We now know that prayer may have stopped the carnage on that Detroit-bound plane. A Christian family prayed onboard that plane and sang “Jesus Loves Me” to newly-adopted children from Ethiopia. We have spiritual forces of wickedness in heav-enly places (Ephesians 6:12) as well as those who carry out their dirty deeds on earth. But God and His angels are far greater!

It would help if we didn’t make the cli-mate more hospitable to the evil ones. But make no mistake, radical Islam is our ene-my. We are in a war, and they want to destroy us and implement Sharia Law.

Brigitte Gabriel and her Act for Ameri-ca speak for all of us: “Contrary to Home-land Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, we’re not fighting ‘man-caused disasters.’ Contrary to President Obama, Christmas Day bomber Umar Abdulmutallab was not an ‘isolated extremist’ and Ft. Hood shoot-er Nidal Hasan was a jihadist.

“One year after Obama launched his ‘outreach’ to the Muslim world that was promised to make us safer, we are anything but—just as we predicted. Obama’s cam-

paign of apology,

accommodation, and appeasement has emboldened and empowered our ene-mies—just as we predicted.” Gabriel con-cludes, “It is time Americans band together and say ‘enough!’ It’s past time for a serious course correction by this administration. It’s time the administration jettisoned political correctness and defined the ene-my—Islamic jihad. It’s time the adminis-tration stopped treating jihadists like thugs who hold up a convenience store and start-ed treating them like the enemy combat-ants they are.”

Because our elites fear politically incor-rect honesty, they believe it is better to harass the innocent, delay the harmless, and risk the lives of every American rather than do the obvious, the effective, and the necessary.

it’s time to follow israel’s el al air-lines and profile, interrogate, and treat everyone with polite suspicion. I have been through their routine many times. It’s inconvenient, but the procedure works. And there are no El Al plane parts floating in an ocean or embedded on the ground.

According to Global Traveler magazine, El Al is the world’s most secure airline. This is both despite and because her planes are assuredly the highest value terrorist targets in the air. The El Al security experience is comfortingly intimate, as opposed to humili-ating.

Franklin Raff on World Net Daily says, “El Al security is not entirely devoid of that familiar ‘cattle stockyard’ feeling, plodding forward in a line, holding your shoes, and

presenting your papers, but many travelers report that these procedures seem far less intrusive than the mechanical stripping, sniffing, and prodding that are presently our lot. Why? Because El Al incorporates something else: A personal touch. It is a brief personal interview of every passenger, Muslim, Christian, Jew, or otherwise.

“Before boarding, a few questions are asked of every El Al traveler. Surely, differ-ent people are asked different sorts of ques-tions that do not seem unnecessarily intru-sive. Some questions are specific, and some are not. The questioners are remarkably pleasant. The interviewers seem to be high-ly trained, yet also highly courteous. In a word, respectful.”

El Al Airlines is so sure of its security that when your meal is served, it is not with plastic utensils. They are usually made of steel.

As someone said, “They just look at you and at how you behave. They will look into your eyes—and that’s how you figure out the bad guys from the good guys.”

More than anyone, Israel knows evil doesn’t respect weakness. Evil sees us as fools not to do the obvious: Profile, ask questions, and try to protect the people.

Simply stated, the “briefs’ bomber” would never have gotten past the behav-ioral profilers at Israel’s Ben Gurion Air-port. The “Israelification” of airlines around the world should be put on fast-forward.

And next time God steps in to protect us, let’s give Him the credit.
