Interoperability, co-existence and specific services as the drivers and opportunities for NFV & SDN migration
NFV & SDN Migration Challenges
NFV Vision and Challenges
• Most major carriers have a vision for NFV and SDN transformation
• “The road to NFV and SDN is going to be long, tough and expensive…..
• “…..Key to all of this is going to be the availability of interoperable, interchangeable virtual network functions (VNFs)” • Light Reading, May 2015

And it’s Complicated

Today’s Reality
• NFV & SDN migration will take time • Expect virtualised IMS by 2020
• Operators expect vendors to be NFV-ready today • Migration path in place
• NFV & SDN / legacy architecture must co-exist • Not independent networks • Heterogeneous networks with NFV and legacy elements, side-by-side
• Knowledge gap internally for operational transformation and adoption of new architecture and paradigm
• Fundamental reshaping of operator cost and skills base • How do you make service perform as expected, end-to-end?
• They will span all parts of the network

Early Adoption Candidates
• New services and functional upgrades • IMS / VoLTE
• But services such as VoLTE must span legacy and NGN networks • Can deploy VoLTE in NFV but can’t simply turn off 3G or other networks
• Old network infrastructure must co-exist with the new, virtualised network environments
• VoLTE promises much and MNOs have to deliver to obtain expected performance benefits and meet customer expectations
• Operational cost reduction • Enhanced network efficiency • HD quality

NFV/SDN Orchestration and Assurance

• Service Assurance is critical
• Must be integrated with a complete Service Catalogue and Provisioning systems for both legacy and NVF / SDN based platforms such as OpenDayLight, OpenStack Neutron, Floodlight etc
• Data collection from both physical and virtualised network equipment, directly through SNMP and/or standard APIs
• Interoperability goal and challenge • Problem Handling is more complex with multiple stakeholders providing the end-to-
end solution to the end customer • Directly affects the quality of service experience.

That´s where NetVision comes in • NetVision is a complete range of OSS service assurance solution delivering superior
customer experience and SLA compliance.
• Seamless integration With legacy tools, providing a cost-effective upgrade to deliver full visibility and control of network performance and operations for both legacy & virtualized environments. • Databases, RESTful APIs, file import / export
• Interoperable
• NetVision Aggregation Gateways are responsible for the integration of NetVision with SBI systems (EMS, NMS, SDN Controllers, routers, SWs, etc) enabling a complete multi-technology and multi-vendor environment for network and service management
• NDI (NetVision Data Integration) functions for integration with external OSS/BSS systems
SDN/NFV Orchestration and Service
Assurance
• Over-the- top, end-to-end orchestration of network services and virtualised network functions based on business/operational rules.
• Spanning legacy and NFV infrastructure
• Event, performance, capacity, SLA monitoring & management across the entire ecosystem.
• Over-the-top and consolidated service views integrating NFV/SDN world with other services.

NetVision enables management of NFV/SDN and legacy infrastructure
Monitor, assure and orchestrate the whole virtual & physical infrastructures allowing : • E2E intelligent event management, performance and capacity along with integrated real
time service level and smart service desk management; • Problem handling & incident management across the board; • Service catalog & provisioning integration and orchestration; • Holistic service views and dashboards integrating NFV/SDN along with legacy networks; • Integration of isolated NFV/SDN controllers at same or different domains; • Traffic engineering. Interface with OSS/BSS - NetVision Aggregation Gateways & NDI • NBI/SBI Rest/SOAP and SQL APIs; • File import & export; • SNMP native.

Conclusion
• NFV / SDN migration is inevitable • Unless you build a network from scratch, you will have to manage
both legacy and NFV framework for some time to come • Must ensure service delivery and performance across all domains • Early adoption candidates – too expensive for wholesale migration
• VoLTE is a clear example of persistence of legacy with NFV / SDN • Must assure, orchestrate and deliver service end-to-end
• NetVision optimised to support migration, deployment and cost-reduction
