SAINT-GOBAIN ISOVER offers insulation systems and guidelines for optimisation of technical installations for more than 120 years. First Isover thermal calculation software tools were introduced already in the early 1990‘s. With these longterm ex-perience and proven competence Isover is

taking the next step and introduces with TechCalc a unique international thermal calculation software that sets new standards.

Thermal calculations for personal safety and process stabili ty are key tasks for planners and engineers to choose the right insulation system in indus trial and HVAC applications. With rising energy prices and awareness on energy efficiency and CO2 emissions savings, thermal calculations are fulfilling more and more also demands for optimisa-tion of energy costs and sustainable design of current and new installations. Therefore new software tools for thermal calculati-ons must adopt to the changed needs and reflect the economic and ecological de-mands in addition to the standard process calculations.

ISOVER is a founder member of EiiF, the European Industrial Insula-tion Foundation, a body set up to communicate and promote the be-nefits of industrial insulation on a European level. As a non-commer-cial organisation, EiiF‘s dedicated staff are able to work on a project basis with European Governments and legislative bodies to promote industrial insulation and its associated economic and financial bene-fits, as well as related training issues.EiiF also helps the industry by providing a European platform for coor dination and cooperation between insulation contractors, mate-rial manufacturers, suppliers (i.e. engineers, designers, etc.) and planning bodies.

Calculating thermal performances for complex installations is a very deman-ding and time-consuming task. ISOVER has therefore developed ISOVER Techcalc, a thermal calculation tool to help indus-trial planners, specifiers and insulation contractors to design thermally efficient constructions quickly, easily and with reli-able results.

ISOVER TechCalc uses procedures laid down in ISO 12241, and supporting engineering rules such as the VDI 2055, as the basis for its thermal insulation calculations. The software brings together decades of prac-tical experience and offers detailed cal-culation procedures with an easy-to-use interface covering a full range of different scenarios:

• Thermal heat flow and surface tempe­rature.

• Required insulation thickness depen­ding on thermal heat flow and/or surface temperature.

• Calculation of operating costs, CO2 savings and amortisation of insulation work.

• Calculation of economic insulation compared to uninsulated alternative.

• Minimum insulation levels required to prevent condensation.

• Drop in temperature over time for inactive/stored media.

• Temperature drop along pipe lines.

• Effect of moisture accumulation on U­values and R­values in cooling and refrigeration pipework.

• Prevention of freezing in water pipes.

• Calculation of heat loss of buried pipes.

TechCalc – from theory to praxisTechCalc has been especially designed for technical planners and insulation engineers based on the know-how of ISOVER. TechCalc is perfect for thermal calcula-tion of pipes, ducts, containers, columns and tanks. Se-cure and trustworthy. Nevertheless, only as one wants it: easy & quick.

TechCalc is really easy and intuitive to use. All required inputs are on one single window only. Behind, the graphi cal interface is based on the latest international standards and technical guidelines such as ISO, VDI and AGI-Q. Thus, the tool allows very complex calculations but trustworthy results.

1. choose your geometrieWith TechCalc you can calculate all standard geometries:• pipes • ducts• walls • tanks (cylinders, spheres, cubes)

2. choose your calculation methodWith TechCalc you can calculate all standard thermal calculation methods depending on chosen geometrie. The selection can be easily done: • with the help of graphical icons or • by choosing from the list

3. choose your claddingsA databank provides you with emissivity values for standard clad-ding types. Alternatively you can use also a free or predefined emissivity value given by the specification.

4. choose your ambient conditions TechCalc is offering a supporting database with climate data of various regions and locations. Alternatively it is also possible, of course, to use free or predefined values given by specification.

5. choose your mediaA preset of standard media characteristics depending on tem-perature and/or pressure can be found as a supporting data-base. Alternatively it is also possible, of course, to use free or predefined values given by specification.

6. choose your insulationTechCalc includes already all ISOVER technical insulation stan-dard products as well as a range of other insulation materials with general values of thermal conductivity and other key per-forming data. With an open product database the user can easily customize and add other insulation products with only a few clicks simply on the basis of a producer‘s technical datasheet.

7. calculate results Press „calculate“ to get realtime calculation results. Results can be easily modified in the same mask by changing any of the conditions and/or by changing insulation products, thicknesses, layers... . By clicking on the graphic, the result can be enlarged.

8. result / output The final result can be extracted either by a designed PDF file, graphical display and/or an unformated text file wich can be easily copied into a quotation letter.Additionally by using the „alternative“ function all previous cal-culations of different geometries are copied. By changing the type of installation, only a fullset of process components or sys-tems can be fast and easily compared and optimized on thermal efficiency and economic criterias.
