Intellectual Merit: The Inter-American Materials Collaboration between NJIT and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is developing new, sustainable backbone chem-istries for thermotropic polyesters. Our goals are:

Synthesize new mesogenic monomers and polymers based on isosorbide/isoidide

Mesogenic monomers using isosorbide as a building block with known mesogenic moieties like biphenyl and naphthalene have been synthesized.Homopolymerization of these monomers results in new, sustainable, high performance polyesters with Tg>150°C and Tm≥290°C These materials are being evaluated as p- phenylene polyester (LCP) “backbone disrupters”

Increase the understanding of the relationships between polymer backbone chemistry, (liquid crystal) LC phase creation and LCP performance

•A close technical working relationship has developed between the group at NJIT and the group at UNAM with visits and exchanges planned through 2013•The NJIT group presented papers at Fall 2012 ACS Meeting, Polymat at Huatulco (Mexico) in October 2011 and Macromex in Riviera Maya (Mexico) in December 2011.
