INTRODUCTION SETEX
Page 1
Thermowells serve two primary functions: (1) extend temperature instrument life by protecting sensing elements from harsh process conditions, and (2) provide process isolation, enabling technicians to remove the temperature instrument for replacement or repair while the process system remains operational. SETEX thermowells are made from high-quality, thermally-conductive materials, providing long life and maximum temperature measurement accuracy.
SETEX specializes in the design and manufacture of thermowells, sample probes, and protection tubes. The product specifications included in this document sufficiently address the majority of applications found in process industries. For special applications, please contact SETEX for engineering and design assistance.

Terminology Immersion Length (“U” dim): Length of thermowell shank.
Lag Length (“T” dim): Extended length between the process connection and instrument connection to account for piping or vessel insulation.
Instrument Insertion Length (“A” dim): Also referred to as bore depth. Overall length (OAL) minus tip thickness.
Tip Diameter (“D” dim): Diameter of the thermowell at the tip.
Shank/Root Diameter (“Q” dim): For tapered and stepped thermowells, the diameter at the base of the process connection. For straight thermowells, the diameter of the shank throughout its length.
Shank: Portion of the thermowell that is immersed into the process system, extending from the base of the process connection to the thermowell tip. Typically either straight, tapered, or stepped. Contact SETEX for special design requirements.
Stepped Shank: Sometimes referred to as reduced tip. Standard root diameter, stepped down to ½” diameter at the tip, to improve measurement response time.
Straight Shank: Recommended for corrosive or erosive applications. Tapered Shank: Recommended for high-velocity applications where strength and rigidity are
essential.
Bore Diameter: The inside diameter of the thermowell. Typically .010” greater than the diameter of the temperature sensor.
Head Length (“H” dim): (Protection Tubes only) Dimension from the instrument connection to the base of the process connection.
Head Diameter (“C” dim): (Socket Weld, Weld-In, and Van Stone only) Actual diameter of the head dictated by the process connection.
Selection Guidelines
Bore Diameter The most common bore diameters are 0.260” and 0.385”. SETEX offers a wide variety of bore diameters to meet customer specifications, up to 1”.
Strength The strength of a thermowell depends on several parameters that relate thermowell construction to the installation environment. For most applications, standard SETEX thermowells provide the necessary strength if the material, style, and length are properly specified for the application. It is important to note that most thermowell failures are caused by vibration that is induced by fluid flow. SETEX offers applications engineering assistance, including wake frequency calculations and custom thermowell design, to help ensure proper thermowell performance in severe-service installations.
Immersion Length To ensure measurement accuracy, the immersion length should be long enough to ensure that the entire temperature-sensitive portion of the temperature instrument is extended into the process medium. For liquid processes, the thermowell should extend into the process fluid a depth equal to the sensor’s temperature-sensitive zone plus one inch or more. For gas processes, the thermowell should reach into the process fluid a depth equal to the sensor’s temperature sensitive zone plus three inches or more.
Thermocouples have short temperature-sensitive zones (at the tip of the sensor). Other temperature sensing devices such as RTDs, bi-metal thermometers, and liquid-in-glass thermometers have temperature sensitive zones between one and two inches.
