An Iowa man obtained a diroree from his wife and then hired . her for a oook. The woman is delighted with the change, because now she can have a new drew occasionally and a little pin-mon- ey in her pocket book. . When the late Dr. Scudder of India was arousing the children of America to care for the heathen, he received a note from a little girl, paying : My Dear Dr. Scudder, 1 send you 10 cents. When you want any more money, write to me." A new style of shirt-coll- ar is run with lead at tle back, so, if the button comes off the shirt- - band, the collar will not climb up the back of the wearer head every time he Btoopa lorward. This is equivalent to equipping several hundred missionaries, j'- - - i - i . i : A father, fearir5 an earthquake in the region ot his home, sent bis two boys to a distant friend's until the peril should be over. A lew weeks after he received this letter from his friend : " Please take your boys home and send down the earthquake.'' ; .;.. It never pays to fret and growl when the future seems our foe ; the better bred will push ahead and strike a braver blow. For luck is work, and those who shirk should cot lament their doom, but yield the play and clear the way, that better mea have room. ' A certain ambassador to a European court was asked by the queen, a remarkably, handsome woman, whether a noted beauty in his own country was in reality the most beautiful lady he had ever met. "lour majesty, I thought so until to-day-," was the graceful reply. A Wast Soon Scpplieij. "tiive us," says the New Hampshire Workingman's Advocate, "the man with brown hands, smut on his nose, and sweat on his forehead. All right- - sent him by express last night; also a woman with a long chin and a wart on her nose, to keep him company, Detroit Free Press. , " Ob, yes, gimme ten cents worth of jbair pins," a dded an" up river farmer, as he was about to leave a store and, while they were being banded down, he continued: It s h'ar rins to-d-ay and ribbons and a tooth brush next day. The gal is always wanting some flim-fla- m thing, and I shouldn't be sur- prised if she'd some day get up and want me to bring home one of them combs with a brass hack. They met on Michigan avenue. One was car- rying a large parcel and the other was carrying a sorrowful face. llain't you carrying parcels any more?" queried the small boy. "Not much! replied the other. It paid well enough, and a fel- ler could wear good clothes and put on some dignity; but when it got so that the head clerk fallowed me around in a hack to see if I stopped to play marbles I thought it was time to quit!" Jeorge Washington couldn't tell a lie, and that's what ails the average Vicksburg boy. The other day, when one of them accidentally broke a pane of glass in a store window, it was touch- ing to see hita walk into the store and up to the merchant and say: "Mr. Blank, I broke a pane of glass in the window there, and you can charge it to the old man's account! Put it down as a pound of saleratus, .and he'll never know the difference!" The editor of the Ckiah (Cal.) Democrat, having recently suggested that, there were other vocations more suitable for a woman than editing a newspaper during a political campaign, Mrs. Belle Lynch, of the Ukiah Dispatch, thus anni- hilates him: ' If only men are to fi ght the bat tie of this campaign, the editor of the Democrat had better put on a checked apron, get him a hank of yarn and some knitting needles, and a pair of brass mounted spectacles, and retire from the stormy conflict." The New Orleans Times intemperately observes that whiskey is always kicking up a rumpus some- where. Sometimes it nestles in the hat of a man as a jolly brick, sometimes in the boots of a man as a hissing serpent, and anon it wraps the pave- ment around the weary traveler, and induces him to believe the flags a patchwork quilt, a stone sill a soft bolster, the street lamp a bed poet, and the gutter a babbling brook. It is worse than Banquo's ghost, yet unlike that classic spook, it will "down" at any man's bidding. LaBSELLA Honesty. During the rain Monday a party stepped into Merrill's grocery and asked for the loan of an umbrella. He was prompUy accommodated. "Yon're a pretty obliging man' obserTed a customer, after the stanger stepped oat. " That's a mighty honest fellow," claimed Mr. Merrill. It ia eaifl by hhtoriarm that r'lorida husbandaand wifen qnarrel lea than the married : reason isbecause the weather is a I way m warm, and thehusband can lay out nights alter getting intoxicated.

An Iowa man obtained a diroree from his wifeand then hired . her for a oook. The woman isdelighted with the change, because now she canhave a new drew occasionally and a little pin-mon- ey

in her pocket book. .When the late Dr. Scudder of India was

arousing the children of America to care for theheathen, he received a note from a little girl, paying : My Dear Dr. Scudder, 1 send you 10cents. When you want any more money, writeto me."

A new style of shirt-coll- ar is run with lead attle back, so, if the button comes off the shirt- -band, the collar will not climb up the back ofthe wearer head every time he Btoopa lorward. This is equivalent to equipping several hundredmissionaries, j'- - - i - i .

i :A father, fearir5 an earthquake in the region

ot his home, sent bis two boys to a distantfriend's until the peril should be over. A lewweeks after he received this letter from hisfriend : " Please take your boys home and senddown the earthquake.'' ; .;..

It never pays to fret and growl when the futureseems our foe ; the better bred will push aheadand strike a braver blow. For luck is work, andthose who shirk should cot lament their doom, but yield the play and clear the way, that bettermea have room. '

A certain ambassador to a European court wasasked by the queen, a remarkably, handsomewoman, whether a noted beauty in his owncountry was in reality the most beautiful lady hehad ever met. "lour majesty, I thought sountil to-day-," was the graceful reply.

A Wast Soon Scpplieij. "tiive us," says theNew Hampshire Workingman's Advocate, "theman with brown hands, smut on his nose, andsweat on his forehead. All right- - sent him byexpress last night; also a woman with a long chinand a wart on her nose, to keep him company,Detroit Free Press. ,

" Ob, yes, gimme ten cents worth of jbairpins," added an" up river farmer, as he wasabout to leave a store and, while they werebeing banded down, he continued: It s h'arrins to-d-ay and ribbons and a toothbrush next day. The gal is always wantingsome flim-fla- m thing, and I shouldn't be sur-prised if she'd some day get up and want me tobring home one of them combs with a brasshack.

They met on Michigan avenue. One was car-rying a large parcel and the other was carryinga sorrowful face. llain't you carrying parcelsany more?" queried the small boy. "Not much!replied the other. It paid well enough, and a fel-

ler could wear good clothes and put on somedignity; but when it got so that the head clerkfallowed me around in a hack to see if I stoppedto play marbles I thought it was time to quit!"

Jeorge Washington couldn't tell a lie, andthat's what ails the average Vicksburg boy. Theother day, when one of them accidentally brokea pane of glass in a store window, it was touch-ing to see hita walk into the store and up to themerchant and say: "Mr. Blank, I broke a pane ofglass in the window there, and you can charge itto the old man's account! Put it down as apound of saleratus, .and he'll never know thedifference!"

The editor of the Ckiah (Cal.) Democrat, having recently suggested that, there were othervocations more suitable for a woman than editinga newspaper during a political campaign, Mrs.Belle Lynch, of the Ukiah Dispatch, thus anni-hilates him: ' If only men are to fight the battie of this campaign, the editor of the Democrathad better put on a checked apron, get him a hankof yarn and some knitting needles, and a pair ofbrass mounted spectacles, and retire from thestormy conflict."

The New Orleans Times intemperately observesthat whiskey is always kicking up a rumpus some-where. Sometimes it nestles in the hat of a manas a jolly brick, sometimes in the boots of a manas a hissing serpent, and anon it wraps the pave-ment around the weary traveler, and induces himto believe the flags a patchwork quilt, a stonesill a soft bolster, the street lamp a bed poet, andthe gutter a babbling brook. It is worse thanBanquo's ghost, yet unlike that classic spook, itwill "down" at any man's bidding.

LaBSELLA Honesty. During the rain Mondaya party stepped into Merrill's grocery and askedfor the loan of an umbrella. He was prompUyaccommodated. "Yon're a pretty obliging man'obserTed a customer, after the stanger steppedoat. " That's a mighty honest fellow," claimedMr. Merrill. "An honest or more generous

jnan you won't find in a day's trarel. He hasgot nunjjhfjaf umbrellas of me, but be alwaysbrings bac- - a better one in return. lie changes'em somehow, but how I don't know, and I don'trare. I see he's honest, an' that's all I careabout M.Danbury AVu'.

To (fie BUI or of the Pacific Commercial Advertiser:Sie The last number of your paper contains an

article apparently editorial, on the subject of the" Water Supply " which so abounds in inaccuracies.as to render a concise review of it indisDensahleThe autlior of that article contends that the wholesupply of the city jind suburbs can at the presentday be furnished by the spring, which, he says, iaonly a few yards above the reservoir its real posi-tion being within the grounds occupied by Ihe Minister of Finance; and certainly more than a quarterof a mile above the reservoir. So much for the ac-

curacy of his knowledge of the matter on which heassumes to instruct others. He says that the plenti-ful deposit of soil and sediment that we find in ourwater containers every daymight be avoided by using only the water from thespring. I propose to demonstrate the fallacy of thisposition. The author seems to assume that the con-dition and circumstances of the water demand andsupply, remain quite unchanged since the completionof the reservoir fifteen years ago, and that becauseas he asserts that stream alone sufficed to supplythe entire demand for two years, (but which othersdeny) that therefore it remains to this day equallyadequate for that service manifestly quite uncon-- ;sciotft of the great extent to which the late Super-intendent spread and extended the water supply inevery direction around the city and suburbs whichof eourse necessitates a greatly increased amount ofwater to be constantly supplied. When the writerof that article insists in the face of that importantfact that that supply can still be furnished by thespring alone, he must be as completely unaware ofits size and capacity, as I have proved him to be ofits real position. The largest amount of water eversupplied by that spring is, and has been conveyedto the reservoir in a five inch pipe ! of course it canonly supply a fraction of the whole amount nowconstantly required, and in the emergency of suchdry seasons as have frequently visited this locality, and will in all probability renew their unwelotnevisits, I am apprehensive that the combined sup-ply of both the spring, and Kapena stream willprove barely if at all adequate to the demand. It isinsinuated in that article for it does not amount toan open manly assertion that the silt traps andgates on the main pipe if indeed the officers incharge are aware of their existence have been andare entirely overlooked by them, and that for thewhole period of fifteen years that has elapsed sincethe work was completed, no one remembers of aninstance when the "silt traps " have been drawn offor the pipes rinsed out through the end gates; andthe only duty performed by the Seperintendentsbeing the (not quite trivial) one of collecting thewater rates. If that writer had been imbued witha little more spirit of fair play he could readily havelearned from the employees at the water office, whoalone are cognizant of the fact, what the traps andgates arc regularly opened once at least in everymonth, and the water allowed to flow through themfreely until quite clear of pollution.

That the water at Kapeca which flows into thereservoir is and must be more or less polluted solong as it runs through an open drain in a cattlepasture cannot be denied, nor can that nuisance beabated until some effective measures are taken bythose who have the power to do so, to prevent orremedy it. Most assuredly the Superintendent ispowerless to furnish any remedy, and it is unjustand nnfair to impeach him for what is manifestlybeyond his control. Yours Obediently,

Heney Presderoast,Superintendent of Honolulu Water Works.

Iu the list of tbtmusical pleasures of the year Mrs. Henry Robin on'sConcert of last Tuesday evening deserves to Le enrolled. It is true that Ihe performers were all amateurs, and in several cases young learners, unaocunKsmedto perform in public ; Lut, if so, we Lave cause tocongratulate ourselves upon the possibilities of Honolulu society in the future, and to these young tyrosthe criticism and encouragement of a kindly audiencemay be a very useful thing. The treat of the eveningwas Sir Heury Iiishop's well-know- n song, "Tell me,my heart, by Mrs Paty, and hardly less pleasing.though probably more scholarly, tins lady's rendering of a cavatiua from " 1'rnani," the pianoforte accompaniment to t io tit nieces being played by Mrs.Davics. The duett between Miss Castle (pianoforte)ana .Mr. Harnard (violin), and Miss Castle s subsequent rendering from memory of an Intricate piano- -lone composition cf Weber, also deserve! very highmention, i lie evening, one or lngti amateur excellence, was occupied by the above mentioned pieoes.vocal duetts respectively between Mrs. Paty and Missllobron, Mi$s Ilobron ana Miss King, and Miss MaudDudoit and Mr. Breed ; a pretty song of CarlAbt, by Miss King, accompanied upon the piano- -i.rta nrtil : i .1 i t l.u ! utt Pnntlu nn.l fa m a.rawlvs - iouu jj t'lica vwniiu asiv vi 1701 Uni va f

Letter from the Rev. Lowell Smith. To tht JJdilor of Uie Vnrific ('inutninl Ailrrrlitwr :

Sir. Much has been said in the AuvntTiniR'aud(!a telle of late about physicians, doctors licensedand not licensed; and several allusions Lave beenobviously made in reference to myself as a medicalpractitioner among the llawanaus.

In your issue on the 1 8th inst, it appears thatspecial effort has been made Ly the foreign memut-r- s

of the Hoard of Health to prove me guilty of malpractice, and that my license as a practicing phystcian ought to Le taken away.

The scribe says that he gives the tutstance of theminutes cf a faceting of the Board cf Health, held oathe Ist inst.; but what he says is so garbled, and inseveral instances incorrect, that justice to myselfand the cause of humanity demand from me a briefstatement of the case. '

On the K'tb of Auguf, Mr. Poli was taken illwith fever, and sent his wife to Ir. Troufseao'sdrug store for a cathartic. He took the dose whichoperated powerfully all night, and paused off into aregular dtarrhu i, which he very unwisely allowed torun on for Jon r Jaytand night. On the morningof the lull, 1 was calleJ in as Ins medical adviser.

fter examiBinx his ease, I told him that he was avery sick man, and nigh unto death. And I advisedhim to send immediately for one of the foreign physicians. tut lie said no; be wUned no Miytictunbut myself, and that I must not forsake him.

I immediately gave medicines to check the uiarrho-a- ; lr. Jayne's carminative balsam, and I 'over'spowder. I visited him three times that day and onone occasion I rubbed his bowels thoroughly withpain-kille- r, and gave hi in some to take internallywith boiled milk, according to the direction, to relievea colic pain, which Lad the desired eth-ct- . lornourishment that day, I prescribed arrowroot andboiled milk. In the course of MX hours his diarrhu awas relieved; but his pulse continued very feeblecold clammy sweat on Ins forehead, and a bad cough.

On Tuesday the I ah, I went and explained thecase to lir. .Mo urew, and abkcl what he wonl ladvise in such a case? He said, "ret a pint cfbrandy and mix with a quart cf boiled milk, sweetenit with loaf-suga- r, and give a spoonful at a time.every hall nour or so. Oo," said he, "to Mr.Dillingham a store, and have one cf his clerks retyou a pint of brandy." I hastened to the store, Lutit being 12 o'clock, the clerks had all gone to dinnerbut one.

Providentially, however, Lr. CuiomiDgs was inthe store and I tol l Lirn about the case and Lekindly offered to go wtth me and sec him. Afterexamining him a while, he said " If he was mypatient, 1 would give hiru (so and Then said

, please prescribe for him in my lehalf. He prepared medicine in a tumbler, and directed to give atcaspoohful every hour. He also ordered beef-te- a.

and raw eggs beaten up in milk for nourishment. Anative man present said he would obey the directionsgiven. But towards night, Poll's friends camearound Lia, and advised him to stop takinr medicine, and spend the night in repenting cf bis violate! covenant vows, bo the night passed withouthis taking medicine; and the next morning when wevisited him, he was obviously failinc fist. Thesymptoms were all very alarming. Dr. C, however.prescribed again but he continued to fail, and die. Iabout eight o'clock that evening. This is a briefaccount of my treatment of tlie case from MondayA, m., till he ibed on Wednesday evening..(in nedtK flay, the 1st of September, one of Uie

The excitement was increased when the doora were closed and theannouncement made by Mr. Ralston that payment was etopnea.

After bank hours, says one paper, " the principal indignation expressed for the supposed instigators of the trouble was against the publishere of the Bulletin and Call, who had, by con-stant attacks upon Mr. Ralston, President of theRank, representing him as the Boss Tweed ofSan Francisco and a political schemer, finallysucceeded in undermining the credit of theBank." " So intense waa the indignation againstthese journals, that at one time it was feared thatthe excited crowd would resolve itself into a moband attack the offices ; but better counsels prevailed, and the city waa spared the disgrace ol ariot. At 5 o clock, 31r. Kaleton met the representatives of the press and others, and stated thatthere was no question but that the Bank wouldbe able to meet all its obligations ; that over

On the 31st it waa announced by the Directorsthat the assets ot the Bank were nominally six),000,000, and that there was a surplus

Meantime, on the 27th, the day following thesuspension of the bank of which he was I resident, the city was startled by the announcement of thedeath ry drowning in the bay ot W ni. u. KalstonLnder the circumstances, rumor at once attrinuted his death to suicide, but a searching inquiryby a coroner's inquest, a post mortem examination, and an analysis ot tne contents ot thestomach ol the deceased, all went to show thatthe death was accidental. His life was insuredfor some $300,000. The funeral, very largelyattended, took place on the 30th, and the citywas dressed in mourning garb in respect to thememory or one who had been her most conspicuous citizen, and who had done much to beautifythe citv and develon the resources of the coast

She wore one of those pockets behind, inwhich, besides her handkerchief, she had depos-ited an apple, a handful of peanuts, quarter ofa pound of gum-drop- s, a little bottie of ammonia, and some other trifles. She and her swain, afteradmiring the complexion of the hugh beast, turned their backs upon bim to watch the mon-keys and the live kangaroo, and gaze into eachothers"s eyes; to do this the better they leanedback against the rope which enclosed the statelymonarch, who saw the apple protruding from thepocket of the unconscious fair one. He hesitateda moment, and was lost to all sense of honor orself-respe- ct, for with shuffling movement he emu-lated the example of our common mother, pluckedand ate the fruit, returned to the pocketand scooped out the gum drops end peanuts, with a ely wink at his nephew, who was lookingon with anxiety at the proceeding. But in thelast mouthful the majestic beast took in theamonia bottle by mistake the cork came out, andabout an ounce of hartshorn ran down the throatof the greedy beast. This beverage is said tonave a reviving and stimulating influence, and inthis case it proved its power, for a more revivedelephant waa never seen on earth. With a wildyell he grabbed tbe protuberence behind the ladywhich had been the cause of his disaster; shewas "pulled back' some before, but as theexasperated trunk yanked at tbe bustle and ac-

cessories, all former attcmps at that style ofwearing gear seemed pale and sickly; everythingwas "pulled back" until the young women lookedlike the statue of Xiobe in blue calico. Theyoung man with great presence of mind shouted" shoo," and the gentlemanly clerk of the ele--ihant, with a long prod, persuaded the beast toct up. But the fun was over for tbe day ; cake

bad no charms, and soda no balm for these twosouL, who walked home with but a single thoughtabout wild animals.
