Thank you for picking up this 2013 Eating Out Guide. It’s great to be able to promote all the fantastic places for eating out around the Isle of Wight.I have lived on the Isle of Wight for four years, and last year was appointed Island food ambassador - a role I look forward to in 2013 and beyond. It’s great to say I am still discovering new and fantastic producers from all over the region especially here - the Island really is an inspiring place for a chef to live. You can buy everything from the finest fish to the best beef, as well as English-grown garlic and delicious tomatoes, all nearby. This gives us the opportunity to create great food with the freshest, quality ingredients available.

Being by the coast has its advantages; fresh fish is landed on a daily basis, and sea bass is line-caught off The Needles. We don’t even have to travel too far for great cheese, because the Isle of Wight produces some the country’s award-winning soft cheese and blue cheese.

The Isle of Wight is placing Hampshire food firmly on the culinary map. At The Hambrough you can enjoy the Isle of Wight and Hampshire’s great produce at the Island’s only Michelin-starred Restaurant serving lunch, dinner and our new Champagne afternoon tea. I have also brought modern Italian flavour to our sister restaurant, The Pond, situated in the neighbouring village of Bonchurch.

I have only been given a few words to talk about the great things the Isle of Wight has to offer, so, in short, whether you’re into locally grown watercress or garlic, Michelin-starred meals, bistros, gastropubs or authentic deli’s, you will find it all here in on the Island. So take advantage of all that our fantastic region has to offer: enjoy and support it. After all, without your support and the hard work of all the producers, farmers and people in the industry, our local food scene couldn’t exist - its continuing success is down to you all.

the home of good tasteThere is something extra special about the Isle of Wight which entices visitors and delights residents year after year, and eating out is an increasingly important part of the pleasure.Just as the Island’s scenery offers something new at every bend in the road, so the Island’s multitude of pubs, cafes, restaurants, tapas bars, snack bars, wine bars and farm shop cafes provide an amazing variety of choice. Perhaps it is just as well, because, as everyone will tell you, a couple of hours in the Island’s fresh clean air will definitely give you an appetite!

But eating out isn’t just about the food – it’s about the total experience.

We’re pleased to say that the Island continues to attract people who love good food. Even more specialist cafes and restaurants have been opened, widening the choice, and also maintaining the high standards you have a right to expect.

And as you’ll see when you browse through this guide, you’re never far away from a table with a sea view.

It really doesn’t matter where you are on the Island either - you’ll find a good place to eat in the main towns and resorts, and in tucked away villages, too. It could be an intimate dining experience with fine food and wine, or traditional home cooking in a warm and welcoming pub, or even a superb farmhouse cream tea - you’ll be bowled over by the quality of the food, and the welcome.

There are treats in store whatever time of the year you visit, and you can enjoy the full flavour of fruit, fish, meat, bread, vegetables and dairy products knowing that it has not had too far to travel before it reaches your plate. One of our Island pubs will even swap a pint of beer for a basket of fruit and vegetable produce brought in by a local gardener. And a new store near Ryde only sells food and other items that have been made on the Isle of Wight.

This comes as a surprise to some, who naturally associate the Island mainly with locally caught fish. Of course, there is no shortage of excellent fish as the harbours of Ventnor, Bembridge and Yarmouth land their crates of lobster, crab, sea bass, mackerel and bream.

But the Island is rapidly building a reputation for fine local food of all kinds, too.

In Spring, you might want to be among the first to taste the Island asparagus, as well as the garlic (which we also export to France) and locally reared lamb.

The Summer brings the most plentiful harvest from the sea, as well as a huge range of locally grown vegetables, and sweet tomatoes – not forgetting local strawberries and ice cream.

In Autumn, our orchards and vineyards yield their fruit, and the hedgerows are laden with wild berries.

Winter brings with it the appetising prospect of the Sunday roast of chicken, pork, beef or vegetarian, all of it organic or free range if you prefer.

The Island’s award winning cheeses are also well worth seeking out, either at the pub, café or restaurant, or perhaps at one of the many excellent farm shops you’ll find as you discover the many delights of the Isle of Wight.

The Island may be small, but there really is something new round every corner.

So whether you live on the Island or are visiting, enjoy your meal …

food hygiene rating schemeBuilding on the success of the Council’s own 0-5 star scheme which has operated successfully since 2007, The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is the national scheme. The scheme is run by local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in partnership with the Food Standards Agency and it provides at-a-glance information to consumers on the food hygiene standards found by environmental health officers at planned inspections in the Island’s 2000 food businesses.

Food businesses are rated on a scale from 0 at the bottom (meaning ‘urgent improvement necessary‘) to 5 at the top (meaning ‘very good’). The rating reflects hygiene practices, management controls and cleanliness/structural conditions.

The scheme recognises food businesses with high standards of food hygiene, whilst providing an incentive for others to improve by allowing consumers to make informed choices about where they eat or buy food from.

Look out for the A5 sized black and green stickers displayed at the entrance to food businesses. You can also find the ratings on the FSA’s website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings
