With a wide range of adventures to be had, both on land and sea, you could find yourself kayaking with our magnificent marine creatures, diving in the deep blue sea, taking to the skies, or simply enjoying a leisurely round of golf – whatever you choose take it at your own pace.

We love: Angling: Fast flowing streams, eight well-stocked reservoirs, and an accessible coastline equal perfect conditions for anglers. Located in the path of the Gulf Stream the Island attracts marine life associated with a warm water current.

Ape Mann: Set in South Barrule, one of the Island’s largest plantations, come and have some fun in the forest. With zip lines, rope courses and tree climbing it’s a challenge for anyone with a head for heights.

Coasteering: Follow the coastline to the sea in this exhilarating adventure where you’ll scale the cliffs only stopping when the rocks become the obstacle – when they do you’ll take to the sea and swim.

Diving: Take the plunge and explore wreck, scenic and drift diving with unrivalled visibility and an abundance of marine life.

Golf: With nine courses spread Island wide you’re guaranteed an uninterrupted round of golf set amongst spectacular scenery.

Kayaking: Take to the water and visit secret coves accessible only by small craft – you may even be joined by basking sharks and seals. Try an evening paddle to watch the sunset or an expedition where you’ll paddle all day before sleeping under the stars.

Laser Mayhem: Don your face paint and camouflage and have some fun in the forest Call of Duty style. Run by ex-soldiers this purpose built battlefield, set in a plantation is a battle of wits and endurance.

Segways: Simple to use and fun to ride, take a Segway safari through the glens, plantations and beaches on these two-wheeled self-balancing vehicles.

Despite being small in size the Isle of Man certainly packs a punch when it comes to adrenaline-fuelled activities.

With an extensive coastline and miles of open space the Island is somewhat of a natural playground for lovers of the great outdoors.

So put some colour in your cheeks and feel the wind in your hair – it’s time to have some fun!

Best known as the home of the TT Course, the Island’s roads have another two-wheeled story to tell – one which is producing superstars of its own.

Here’s your chance to take in the varied terrain which has propelled some of the world’s best cyclists – think Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh - to success.

Arguably one of the best places in the British Isles to ride, variety is the spice of life when it comes to the Island’s cycling landscape.

Explore the quiet country roads, coastal footpaths and plantations at your leisure or tackle steep climbs – dubbed the ‘Manx Alps’ - to be rewarded with sensational scenery before feeling the adrenaline rush as you start your descent.

Mountain bikers who are keen to get off the beaten track will fi nd a wealth of off-road trails – particularly popular are the vast plantations, several of which are waymarked to help you make the most of your visit.

Suitable for all ages and levels of ability it’s no wonder the Island breeds young cycling talent - in fact two of the greatest cyclists of the modern generation started here.

Manx Missile Mark Cavendish MBE – the fastest man on two wheels – has competed on the road since 2006 winning 25 Tour de France stages, currently sitting in third place in the all time stage victory table.

Alongside Cav, who uses the Isle of Man’s road climbs to train for international meetings, is Peter Kennaugh MBE.

The Olympic gold medallist, who rides for Team Sky, took victory at the London 2012 Olympics – his medal making him the fi rst Manxman in 100 years to claim a gold.

Continuing his winning streak he took the top spot in the Tour of Austria in 2014 as well as a silver medal for the Island at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Welcome to the road-racing capital of the world - it’s time to experience what the Isle of Man does best.

Each year thousands of visitors return to this mecca for motorsport to sample the thrills of racing at its fi nest.

Our public roads play host to a number of events throughout the year – topping the bill and dubbed as the ‘greatest road-racing event in the world’ is the TT.

For the last 100 years the Island has opened up the throttle and roared into life as riders compete for the Tourist Trophy.

Taking place on the 37 ¾ mile Mountain Course world famous riders, and some locals, pit themselves against each other and the road.

Skill, bravery and determination is needed as riders reach speeds of 200mph in their bid to be crowned champion.

Fans can secure unrivalled access to the racing action from numerous vantage points around the course.

TT Grandstand: For the ultimate TT experience you must watch at least one race from here. This iconic building features views of the start and fi nish line, 170 mph stretch, as well as the pit lane and winner’s podium. It’s also adjacent to The Paddock where you will see the racing teams at work and spot some of the riders.

Fanzones: Giving fans a raised vantage point at some of the most spectacular action-packed points on the course you’ll fi nd ticket-only fanzones at key spots including Ballaugh, Creg-ny-Baa and Noble’s Park.

Ready, steady,go...Day 1Douglas is home to the Manx Museum, and nearby iMuseum, both of which are packed to the rafters with history and heritage and a perfect place to start before boarding the Steam Railway.

The longest narrow gauge steam line in Britain will take you to the ancient capital Castletown where you’ll fi nd Castle Rushen, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval castles.

From here continue your journey to the end of the line at Port Erin, where you’ll see the Railway Museum, before heading further south to Cregneash – a secluded 19th century crofting community.

Nearby is the Meayll Hill Neolithic passage grave and The Chasms which offers perfect abseiling terrain if you have a head for heights. Follow the coastline on foot to the most southerly point The Sound – the footpaths here make up part of the 100-mile Raad ny Foillan.

Extra time? See more of the Island’s capital, Douglas, by taking a whistle-stop tour aboard the open-top sightseeing tour bus. Follow this with a spot of retail therapy or a hike to the Great Union Camera Obscura on Douglas Head, which provides panoramic views across the bay. When night falls be sure to pay a visit to the Gaiety Theatre, which was designed by famed architect Frank Matcham, or the Villa Marina for a year-round programme of entertainment.

Afterwards head to St Johns to the Tynwald Arboretum - made up of trees from the 17 parishes, it’s a perfect picnic spot. Don’t miss the Tynwald Mills retail outlet for a boutique shopping experience as well as Tynwald Hill, which is where the Manx parliament sits in the open once a year.

Respite over, it’s time to head west for some more adrenaline fuelled adventure – the coastline around Peel Castle is perfect for watersports. Take a chartered boat trip or sample coasteering or kayaking – try a sunset paddle or overnight expedition where you can sleep under the stars.

Day 3Journey to the north of the Island in the 100-year-old Manx Electric Railway tramcars to Ramsey along a 17-mile stretch of beautiful countryside.

Visit the Grove Museum of Victorian Life or Mooragh Park, which has its own boating lake, before venturing to Milntown – an impressive historic house set in 15.5 acres of beautifully maintained gardens and a perfect spot for afternoon tea.

Board the tram back to Laxey, in the east, where you’ll fi nd the world’s largest working waterwheel Lady Isabella, as well as the Laxey Woollen Mills where Manx tartan is made. Nearby in Maughold you’ll fi nd the largest Neolithic tomb in the British Isles at Cashtal yn Ard.

There are numerous Dark Sky Discovery Sites across the Island – one of the most popular spots is at the top of the Island’s only mountain. Take the Snaefell Mountain Railway to the summit, as night falls, for supper and stargazing.

Extra time? Start your day with a round of golf at one of nine impressive courses – wherever you choose you’ll be well placed, when fi nished, to take in one of the Island’s stunning national glens. With 18 to choose from you’ll fi nd most usually lead to the sea – Groudle Glen, near Onchan, has its own two-foot gauge railway, which runs to the remains of a zoo complex. If you want to take things at a leisurely speed try a quad biking experience

through the valleys or a gentle hack through the countryside on horseback.

Extra days...The Point of Ayre, at the northern tip of the Island, is home to the Ayres Visitor Centre, which lies in low-lying sand dunes and is home to a wide array of wildlife. Nearby you’ll fi nd the Jurby Transport Museum, housed in a Second World War hangar, and Curraghs Wildlife Park, which is home to around 100 animal species many of which are endangered in the wild.

the Island, including repatriation to their home country.

Castletown (Balla Cashtal)

Castle Rushen - a magnificently preserved medieval fortress t

hat was once home to the Kings

and Lords of Mann, dominates the Island’s ancient capital. It overlooks an idyllic harbour to one

side and the town square to the other. In addition to the Castle, the compact and picturesque

town is full of fascinating attractions that include the old House of Keys, The Nautical Museum

and the Old Grammar School. Castletown is also located approximately half way along the Isle

of Man Steam Railway line that runs from Douglas to Port Erin.

A building of huge historical significance, Castle Rushen is one of the best-preserved medieval cas

tles

in Europe. Its origins can be found in the Norse period though successive rulers between the 13th and

16th centuries further developed the castle. Interactive

displays throughout the castle include the skillfully

replicated sights, sounds and smells of the past.

In the shadow of Castle Rushen is the Old Grammar School, thought to be the oldest roofed building

on the Island and once the church of the late-medieval settlement that grew up around the castle.

Home of George Quayle’s 18th Century armed yacht ‘The Peggy’, the Nautical Museum preserves

Quayle’s mysterious architectural designs, and houses a replica sail maker’s loft. Further displays of nautical

equipment, models and photographs reflect the importance of the Manx fishing industry.

The Old House of Keys - the former home to the Manx Parliament - has been fully restored to its

1866 appearance. Inside the debating chamber, visitors vote on many crucial iss

ues that once faced the

Manx Parliament – and even some issues they are yet to face! It provides a fasc

inating insight into the

workings of the Island’s famously old democracy that stre

tches back to Viking times.

Peel (Purt ny Hinshey)

The Manx fishing port and west coast town of Peel won’t disappoint. Quaint, narrow streets

, a

deep working harbour and modern marina lined with fishing boats and pleasure craft and the

magnificent ruins of Peel Castle all combine to create a unique atmosphere. History is giv

en a

modern interactive twist in the nearby House of Manannan, whilst Pee

l is also home to one of

the best sandy beaches, the famous kipper curers and the Island’s only cathedral.

Peel Castle, one of the Isle of Man’s principal historic monuments, occupies the important site of St

Patrick’s Isle at Peel. The Curtain Wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are testimony to the

site’s religious and secular importance in Manx history. The Isle was established as an important centre

of Christianity in the 6th century and later became the ruling seat of the Norse Kingdom of Man and the

Isles. The Castle’s most famous “resident” is the so called Moddey Dhoo or Black Dog ghost.

Using state of the art display techniques, the House of Manannan, sitting at the head of Peel Harbour,

explores the Island’s Celtic, Viking and Maritime traditions. The sea god Manannan Mac Lir guides your

way through the displays of this hugely popular award-winning museum.

Moore’s Traditional Curers is a family business and working factory that enables visitors to

experience the entire kipper making process. Take a tour of the factory and leave with some of the

famous produce. Tour times vary.

The Manx Transport Museum is an Aladdin’s Cave of transport memorabilia. Housed within a

restored building in Peel are many models, photographs and unique exhibits which catalogue the many

different, and sometimes obscure, means of transport adopted by Manx residents over the decades.

The Southwest

The coastline that lies between the two towns of Port Erin and Port St Mary is a treasure trove

of fascinating attractions and wildlife hot spots.

Port Erin (Purt ny Chiarn) sits within a beautiful bay dominated by the towering Bradda Head. Its beach

is one of the finest, offering soft golden sands and the area is a walker’s paradise with a spectacular glen and

coastal pathways. It i

s the southern outpost of the Steam Railway and within the surrounds of the station

is the excellent Railway Museum. Boat trips to the Calf of Man depart from Port Erin harbour.

A turbulent stretch of fast moving water separates the Calf of Man, a bird observatory encircled by

precipitous cliffs, from the southern tip of the Isle of Man – an area known as The Sound.

The Sound Visitor Centre, with its striking glass

walls, offers visitors an uninterrupted 180 degree view

of the surrounding scenery and features information displays explaining the history and ecology of the

local landscape and seascape. Visit the café, sit back and enjoy the view.

The National Folk Museum at Cregneash is a living museum showing what life was like in a 19th

century Manx crafting community. Cregneash houses, a collection of thatched white-washed cottages

and a working farm where, at certain times, there are demonstrations of horse drawn farming techniques,

blacksmithing, joinery, spinning, weaving and more. Situated at the heart of the village is the tea rooms that

offer afternoon teas, scones and even Manx bonnag, a tr

aditional Manx cake!

St John’s (Balley Keeill Eoin)

The quiet rural village of St John’s takes centre stage on Manx National Day (Tynwald Day) in

early July, when the annual open air Tynwald ceremony is held. Tynwald members (The Manx

Parliament) gather on the tiered hill - a custom that dates back to Viking times. Nearby is the

Arboretum, the Tynwald National Park, where the grounds are planted with trees from all 17

Manx Parishes. Situated in the valley behind is Tynwald Mills shopping complex which includes

two cafes and a Wildflower Garden.

Historic Castle Rushen

Ballasalla & Rushen Abbey

Situated near Ballasalla – a village with a station on the steam railway line – is Rushen Abbey.

Here are the ruins of a church built by monks along with a modern interactive museum, all set

within large gardens and wild flower areas. The museum comprises many audio and visual

exhibits that tell the story of the Abbey and much of the museum is designed for children,

allowing them to be a monk, build an arch, dig for artefacts and more. Nearby is the Monk’s

Bridge – a very rare example indeed. A short walk from the Abbey is Silverdale Glen with a cafe,

miniature boating lake, children’s playground and craft centre.

Ramsey (Rhumsaa)

The Island’s second largest town earned the title ‘Royal Ramsey’ after an unscheduled visit

in 1847 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Ramsey sits at the northern end of the Manx

Electric Railway beneath the glare of impressive

North Barrule and the Albert Tower - built in

commemoration of the Prince’s visit. Across the swing bridge over

the working harbour is the

town’s jewel – the 40 acre Mooragh Park.

Located in the heart of Ramsey, Mooragh Park is one of the finest outdoor leisure facilities on the

Island. Set within spacious manicured gardens and walkways, the park offers a large boating lake, children’s

play areas, tennis courts, bowling greens, crazy

golf and two cafes.

The Grove Museum of Victorian Life on the outskirts of Ramsey was once a summer retreat of

the 19th century Liverpool shipping magnate Duncan Gibb. It has been preserved to provide an insight into

the domestic life in the Victorian era. The house is filled with original furniture, fixings and fittings along

with numerous items and curios of the time, whilst the out buildings house agricultural equipment. Relax

in the gardens or enjoy a lunch or afternoon tea in the Grove Conservatory Restaurant.

Douglas (Doolish)

Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man, is a unique blend of holiday resort, finance centre

and working harbour, offering the visitor a wealth of things to do. It is h

ome to many unique

attractions from the horse drawn trams to the Frank Matcham designed Gaiety Theatre.

The Gaiety Theatre is one of the finest examples in the British Isles of the work of Victorian theatre

architect Frank Matcham. It is located next to the Villa Marina on Douglas Promenade and together

the complex presents a year-round programme of film, art, m

usic, comedy and theatre. First opened in

1900, the Gaiety is reputedly haunted by several ghosts! Listings and tickets are availab

le from the theatre

box office or from the Isle of Man Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal.

The award-winning Story of Mann is introduced at the Manx Museum – the ‘Island’s Treasure House’.

The National Art Gallery is one of several galleries that also

cover the Island’s Viking, Celtic and Medieval

heritage. With more exhibits covering the social history and natural history of the Isle of Man, the museum

is as extensive as it is fascinating! Refreshments are availab

le at the museum’s Bayroom Restaurant.

The Great Union Camera Obscura located on Douglas Head was opened in the 1890’s and is

one of only a few in the British Isles. The camera was a popular novelty in its day and used primarily to

spy on other tourists cuddling on the headland! Now fully restored, it’s proving equally popular with

today’s visitors.

The Douglas Horse Trams are the world’s oldest surviving horse trams, dating from 1876. The

tramway runs the length of Douglas Promenade and links the Electric Railway terminus at the north

end to the Sea Terminal at the south end. On retirement the horses spend the rest of their lives at The

Home of Rest for Old Horses on the outskirts of Douglas – another popular attraction with visitors

and locals alike.

For some of the finest views of the east coast take a trip on the Manx Electric Railway. The unique

vintage railway runs over 17 miles of track from the Terminus on Douglas promenade, through the village

of Laxey to the town of Ramsey in the north of the Island.

Dating from 1874 the Isle of Man Steam Railway is the Island’s oldest Victorian rail system. The

narrow gauge trains pass through many important and historical sites in the south of the Island. Douglas

Station can be found at the far west end of the quayside.

Laxey (Laksaa)

Laxey is set in a beautiful deep valley and forms two distinct areas – the main village and Old

Laxey that nestles around the quaint tidal harbour and popular beach. The magnificent Laxey

Wheel - the largest working water wheel in the world, dominates the Snaefell valley and is

testimony to the history of mining in the village.

Arguably the Island’s best known landmark, the Great Laxey Wheel or ‘Lady Isabella’ was built in

1854 to pump water from Laxey’s lead and zinc mines. Visitors can climb the steep spiral staircase to the

viewing platform that overlooks the 72ft diameter wheel and the village beyond.

The Great Laxey Mine Railway was built to replace the tramway wagons that were originally pulled

by ponies. The steam locomotives ‘Ant’ and ‘Bee’ dating from 1877 were used to transport ore from the

mines to the washing floors. Visitors can ride these miniature locomotives over the restored section of

track under the main road and onwards to the Great Laxey Wheel.

For a spectacular view, on a clear day, you can see seven kingdoms – Mann, Scotland, England, Wales,

Ireland, Heaven and the Sea – take a ride on the only electric mountain railway in the British Isles. The

Snaefell Mountain Railway runs over four miles and takes passengers from Laxey Station up to

the Island’s highest point, the summit of Snaefell at 2036 feet. Alight at the Bungalow Station if you fancy

walking the second half of the ascent!

Page 68: Isle of Man Visitor Guide 2015

With 26 dark sky discovery sites the Isle of Man has become the best place to
