1.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

R1- Committee members are asked to scrutinise the information included in the core data sets for Local Authorities

2.0 REASONS.

2.1 Welsh Government has established an arrangement for publishing core data sets

which provide information about educational performance against the main indicators and which allow comparison of performance between authorities in Wales.

The final version of the core data sets for the 2012-2013 academic year were published during the spring term, 2014.

The core data sets include the type of information that members of the Committee have received in the Annual Education Report. In addition information is also included for aspects such as comparing the performance of boys and girls, and also the performance of pupils in receipt of free school meals compared with other pupils.

The charts included in the appendix show:

Information about the general performance across the main indicators;

An example of a chart used to compare the performance of local authorities;

Charts showing the performance of pupils in receipt of free school meals in comparison with other pupils;

Charts comparing the performance of boys and girls.

It is noted that the gap in performance between pupils in receipt of FSM compared with other pupils is generally a smaller gap for the Isle of Anglesey than for Wales, in respect of the main indicators (CSI and L2+) at key stage 2, key stage 3 and key stage 4, but not in the Foundation Phase. In the Foundation Phase the pupils in receipt of FSM in Anglesey attain a higher score than the equivalent pupils across Wales, but the other pupils’ attainment is even higher in comparison with the equivalent pupils across Wales. This means that the gap between the two groups is wider for the Isle of Anglesey than for Wales. There are individual subjects and areas of learning where the gap is narrower in Anglesey and others where the gap is wider. For the performance of boys and girls, the gap between them is narrower for the Isle of Anglesey for the main indicators in key stage 3 and key stage 4, but not so for the Foundation Phase nor key stage 2. Again it seems that one of the reasons for this is that the performance of both boys and girls is high for the Isle of Anglesey, but that the gap in performance is wider than the gap for Wales.
