BY EMILY WAGNER
he Wells Gallery at Te SanctuaryResort is featuring new worksby artist Junko Ono Rothwell
in August and September. Rothwellreceived her art degree from OkayamaUniversity in Japan; soon after she cameto the United States to attend art classes atCornell University. Rothwell, original lya pastel artist, is a native of Japan, andnow lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.Rothwell routinely vacations on Kiawahand Folly Beach, and her most recent
trip to the Lowcountry has provided themuse for her showing at the Wells Gal lery.Tese landscape paintings still reect theartists cultural heritage most notablyin her use of space and shape whichechoes Eastern art, yet her color palette isstrongly inuenced by her American artexperience. She uses bold bright colors incontrast to the more delicate tones oftenassociated with Asian art. She is a masterat capturing changing color and light asshe paints en plein air.
When I was an art student in Japan,I used darker colors. But after I moved tothe U.S., I often went to museums whereI learned to use brighter colors,Rothwell
said. Rothwell uses color to bring outthe mood, movement, and energy of herworks. Rothwell said, I do not block eachcolor, but try to ow colors over the entirepaper to create the feeling of movement.Color brings each painting to life. I amalways impressed at how the sun lightsup the marsh and changes its colors andmoods at dierent times of day and duringdierent seasons of the year. Weatherpatterns also dramatically change the lookof a marsh. In summer, I always love topaint big white clouds oating over thedistant marsh. And in November, themarsh glows with a lovely yellow-orangecast. It is for a marsh scene that Rothwell
is best known on Kiawah a large colorfulmarsh owned by the Sanctuary Resortbrightens their east wing and draws inlocals and visitors alike.
Rothwells work has appeared in Bestof Pastel (Rockport Publishers, 1996),Portrait Inspirations (Rockport Publishers,1997), Te Best of Sketching and Drawing(Quarry Books, 1999) and Pure Color(Northlight Books, 2006). She was one offour artists featured in the UnforgettableLandscapes: Dierent Approaches toLight and exture article in Te Pastel Journal (May/June, 2000). Rothwell alsoillustrated a childrens book in Japanese:
M. McLaughlin, Minna no koe ga kikoeru
( B u n g e i s h a ,2002).
Rothwell is arenowned pleinair landscapepainter; asM a d l y n - A n nC. Woolwichof the PastelJournal said, shecarefully makesstrokes in private

According to Safe Kids, USA, motor vehicle crashes isthe leading cause of death to children between theages of 3 14. Astonishingly, for every fatality, 18
children require hospitalization and more than 400 receivesome type of medical treatment.
Whether it is a child seat, a booster seat, or the use ofseat belts, all 50 states have some type of motor vehiclechild restraint law. It does not matter how good the restraintsystem is or the laws, the restra int system must be used properlyto be eective. Properly installed/used child restraint systemsreduce fatal injures by 72% for infants, 54% for toddlers, andolder children are 28% less likely to receive a fatal injury while using a proper restraintsystem than using seat belts alone. It has been estimated that 73% of the child restraintsystems installed have at least one critical installation component installed improperly, such as a loose safety belt, or loose harness straps (baby seats). Te rear seat of thevehicle is the best location for any child safety seat.
Te St. Johns Fire District, along with other area re departments, and in conjunctionwith Safe Kids rident Area is hosting a Seat echnician Certication course in Augustand September. Tis certication course is only available to the area re servicepersonnel, but each course cumulates with a safety seat check station that is open to thepublic. blatantly bright and sometimes explosive landscape colors. Tere is no attempt totone down the color, for that is the way she perceives the scene, and want to present itin all its radiance. Te boldness of her vision helps her create vibrant, visual scenes ofnature.
Another artist featuring new works is Rick Reinert, a Charleston artist, is once againpartnering with the Wells Gallery at Te Sanctuary Resort, on a new show of works.Tis dual show featuring works by Reinert and Atlanta based ar tist Junko Ono Rothwell, focuses on representations of the Lowcountry one of Reinerts favorite inspirations.Rick Reinerts formal art training took place at Western Kentucky University in the
1970s which gave way to independent study resulting in various one-man shows in the1980s including those in Germany and oronto, Canada which featured his large, boldexpressionistic work.
Rick renewed his commitment to painting a number of years ago and since, his work has reected both his passion for expressing light and shadow in nature andsurroundings while striving for purity in color and brushstroke. Reinert has achieveda unique and distinctive painting style because of constant self-teaching and study.Recently, his painting Ships of the Heartland was a top 100 winner in the 2008Paint American competition and he has been chosen as a featured artist in the GadsdenMuseum of Art Southeastern Plein Air Festival in Gadsden, Alabama. His work hasbeen included in Oil Painters of America 2008 National Exhibition, of which heis also an associate member along with the American Impressionist Society. Reinerthas been featured twice in American Art collector Magazine and the February 2009edition of Sunshine Artist featured him as their cover story. He has won Best ofShow and numerous place awards for his artwork which hangs in private and corporatecollections in the most U.S. States, Europe, Canada, South America and Asia.
Nature and sunlight have provided me with the ultimate reference library. I believethat it is possible to study painting for a lifetime and never have to venture more thanone square mile for constant challenges and a wealth of subject matter. Every day oersunique and exciting opportunities for the artist who follows the light, says Reinert.
Reinerts work is bold and his contemporary impressionistic style has made forinteresting and unique images of Kiawah and the Lowcountry.
Admission to the art show is free. for more information call 576-1290. Te OpeningShow is August 19 from 5-8:00pm. Rothwell and Reinert will both be in attendance.

You really should you know! Whenyou get that email that did not getcaught in the spam folder that says
you WON $20 million, you are the longlost descendant of pick a name, etc. youdo NO need to look further. Regardlessof the content its not true, no one is g ivingyou a million, billion or even $20,000,PERIOD! Its all fake, they know after 20years all the buttons to push and will usethem. Really you should know better andtake it from Rent A Bob its all fake.
I say this because it seems the scamsseem to rise in volume in direct proportionto everyones need for money. Rememberthe old adage that if it sounds too goodto be true it is even if its written. Tescammers (spammers) have all kinds ofstatements, all of which have gone aroundat least a thousand times (or it seems) andyou would think everyone has seen themall yet people still fall for them. Pleasedont let this happen to you. Emails area great tool, make you close to friendsand family, businesses, but with the goodcomes the bad - spammers, viruses, badpeople.
Another email that you should NEVERrespond to is anything from you bank,401k, savings & loan, anything that asksfor you username, password or accountnumber. If a bank needs to speak withyou the email will never have you clickon something or ask for info they shouldalready have. A valid email might state
that you need to contact them at somenumber, login to your account to reviewsomething, etc. but not give information. If you are ever in doubt look up thenumber of your bank, etc. and call thatnumber. Inform them of what you havereceived and ask if it is valid.
So remember that a gift of money isalways a fake and do not trust an emailfrom a business asking for info they alreadyhave. I know I have had several columns
on emails but the dangers are real. So asyou have always heard You should knowbetter!
I look orward to any comments orquestions so please give me a call or emailanytime. I am happy to give advice or fxwhatever you computer problems may be.I you have any problems, questions, etc.about your particular needs do not hesitateto contact me at 843.822.7794 or email [email protected].
