ADAM AND The Ants nave become the first CBS UK artists to reach theNumber One position in the BMRB/Music & Video Week album charts. Lastweek the band were presented with gold albums for Kings Of The WildFrontier, gold singles for Antmusic and silver singles for Dog Eat Dog.Pictured (1 to r) qt the presentation are: Allen Davis (president, CBS RecordsInternational); Terry Lee Miall (Ants drummer); Dick Asher (deputy presidentand chief operating officer, CBS Records Group); Adam, Kevin Mooney (Antsdrummer and producer), David Betteridge (MD CBS UK), Maurice Oberstein(chairman CBS UK) and Marco Pirroni (Ants guitarist).
ISLAND AND BASFDELIVER DOUBLEHOME -TAPE BLOWTHE ANTI -home taping lobbyreceived two body blows lastweek: Island Records announcedthat all its future cassettereleases would feature thealbum on one side and blanktape on the other - one of theerasure prevention lugs beingretained to allow it to be usedfor recording by the purchaser; Leading manufacturer BASFstated its intention to spend£500,000 on promoting a newhigh quality blank tape.
Island's new controversial casseteconcept, called One Plus One," islaunched this week with SteveWinwood's Arc Of A Diver. Thisrelease, like all future releases, isrecorded on chrome tape to give abetter sound quality.
With a list price of £3.99 anddealer price of £2.43, Island has cjtits prices considerably, the previouscassette series prices being £5.29 and£3.07 respectively.
"We are marketing a pre-recordedcassette, not a blank tape," statedIsland chairman Martin Davis, "Inpure value for money terms OnePlus One represents a very good dealfor the consumer. One Plus One hasbetter sound quality and is cheaperthan other pre-recorded cassettes.
"The blank tape is intended as abonus. Nowhere in our marketing orpublicity are we advocating anyparticular use for the blank tape -that must be for the consumer todecide.
"We also believe One Plus Onewill increase the market for pre-recorded cassettes. If we take salesaway from anywhere, it must befrom the blank tape market - andthat can only benefit the industry asa whole."
By JIM EVANSThe BPI is currently awaiting
publication of the Government'sGreen Paper on home -taping and itsdirector general John Deaconcommented last week: "Until I havehad a chance to investigate Island'snew marketing concept and itsvarious implications, I do not feel ina position to comment further. Ifnecessary we will take the matter upwith Island."
Island is to follow the Winwoodrelease with three further One PlusOne cassettes by mid -February -Shades by JJ Cale, Healing by ToddRundgren and Bunny Wailer SingsThe Wailers. In March there will bea further nine releases. Island's backcatalogue will be transferred to OnePlus One "as soon as possible".
Organisers to trimnext year's MidemRESPONDING TO a trend to fewer participants spending less time at Midem, next year's event will be trimmed down to six days, one day shorter than usual.
According to official figures, this year's Midem attracted only slightly lesspeople than last year - and they came from a record number of 53 countries- but many stayed for only threé or four days.
Assessing the amount of business achieved is always difficult and at best canonly be sampled on a straw -poll basis, but the general impression was that onceagain the smaller labels and publishing companies benefitted most, whilemajor record companies found little potential hit material being offered.
There seemed to be plenty of catalogues and songs available for publisherswilling to spend their time listening and there were fewer lawyers asking"telephone number" advances.
Musically, no innovative trend emerged and one A & R director summed upwhat he had heard as: "A lot of pseudo new wave, still some disco, and the sortof good quality American rock which is successful in the US but has no marketin the UK at the moment". More Midem news and pictures on pages 2, 6 and 35.
Island's campaign for the newseries includes extensive advertisingin the music/rock press, counterdisplays and point of sale material, together with posters explaining theOne Plus One concept. Thecampaign also includes acompetition run in conjunction withBASF whose tape Island is using. The company's C90 special packs, inMarch, will advertise One Plus Oneand carry details of an Islandcompetition, the first prize of whichis a holiday for two in Nassau. Therewill be 5,000 runner-up prizes ofspecial One Plus One compilationtapes featuring various Island artists- plus one side of blank tape.
Meanwhile, a massive budget hasbeen earmarked to promote a newBASF blank tape. This sum is to payfor TV advertising alone (to show"BASF's most spectacularcommercial") for the newChromdioxid II. The ads will benetworked nationally from February23 for four weeks, and are expectedto be seen by 85 per cent of thepopulation at least seven times.BASF has further plans for anothergiant promotion campaign nextautumn.
NeedletimeTHE LONG -RUNNING disputebetween the Association ofIndependent Radio Contractorsand Phonographic PerformanceLtd over the correct level ofroyalties for playing records onILR stations this week reachesthe High Court.
The level of payments was setby the Performing RightTribunal in June last year butAIRC is challenging the tribunalto give a more detailedexplanation of the reasons for itsdecision in a statement of case.
AIRC has lodged an appealagainst the tribunal decision, butcounsel for the associationasserted that the tribunal had notstated a case on which an appealcould be based. Counsel assertedthat AIRC's contentions on theimportance of airplay andcomparisons with royalties fromthe BBC and to the PerformingRight Society were disregardedand that this needed somejustification.

GRRD expands toembrace video
NAILING ITS colours firmly tothe mast of new technology, theGRRD announced last week thatit had opened its membership tovideo retailers, and renameditself RAVRO - Record andVideo Retailers Organisation.
At a press conference tolaunch the new association, chairman Harry Tipple outlinedits twin aims of encouragingrecord retailers "not to lose thegreat potential of the videosoftware market" and ofexpanding and strengtheningmembership by including video -only dealers.
Significant points whichemerged were: an expected great increase inmembership, and correspondingincrease in strength when talkingto record and/or videomanufacturers; formulation of standardisedbasic documentation to helpdealers; possible amalgamation withother infant video retailassociations; a tough line with videosoftware manufacturers who cutout the retailer; liaison with the PRS on
licensing in-store video andrecord play; caution urged on "adultentertainment" soft porn videosales;
Tipple stressed that, whileremaining a division of the MTA,RAVRO is a totally autonomousbody. Planning for the future ofthe trade had inevitably led to theinclusion of video.
"The thinking behind ourinvolvement is to amine theterms and condition of tradingand assure ourselve4 that theretailer is going to i ceive thesatisfactory remuneration for hisinvestment," Tipple said.
To create the "climate forsuccessful trading in this newpotential market" RAVRO willlook into setting up videoretailers' conference; setting uptraining sessions; working out itsown conditions of trading, andproducing agreed basicdocumentation.
Tipple said that RAVRO wasexpecting before long to have asmany members selling video as ithas members who sell records. Many record dealers are expected

BPI cassettesingles talkscontinueA REPORT on new criteria forrecords entering the BMRB chart(MW January 31) appears to havebeen premature and the BPI saysthat the proposed rules are stillunder discussion. The pointsreported may or may not beincorporated and marketingcompanies will be given sufficientnotice before the rules areimplemented, adds the BPI.
The revisions are prompted by theneed to give guidelines to includecassette singles and the BPI says thatthere is to be no insistence that all ofthe music must be on one side of thetape, only, as reported.
GRRD videoexpansionFROM PAGE 1to move into stocking videosoftware as well "but thatdepends on the financial climate, and they will he encouraged to gointo it if they see there is
profitability there".When questioned about the
video disc specifically Tippleopined: "I'm not too sure a greatmany retailers will sell it."
A GRRD survey has produceda list of 135 video -only dealers. All these and any otherapplicants would, Tipple said, beeligible for membership ofRAVRO "so long as they aredoing the job properly".
MTA secretary ArthurSpencer-Bolland emphasised, however: "New RAVROmembers will have to providetrade references, and these willhe taken up."
On the question of RAVRO'srelationship with other similarassociations such as the recentlyannounced Video RetailersAssociation Tipple said: "Wewill be contacting other videoretailers' associations to see whatbenefits can be gained by gettingtogether. It would be pointlesshaving more than oneassociation covering the samearea of trade."
When asked about the alreadynoticeable tendency for videomanufacturers to sell by directmail order, or operate a rentalrather than retail system, Tippleasserted: "Bypassing the retailtrade - for records or video - issomething this organisation istotally against."

Folk forecastcomes true forJSU in1981SALES OF folk albums were
tipped for a healthy rise in1980 by Jazz ServicesUnlimited (JSU) distributors- and at this early point in1981 they are happy toannounce they wereabsolutely right.
The folk boom is unlikely to sendechoes reverberating aroundthe big money, pop side ofthe industry, but JSU regardit as "a pretty bright spot inan otherwise gloomy year"and they report that anumber of their dealers, whohave not previously stockedfolk, "have found itrewarding to utilise themassed expertise of the JSUdistribution colossus".Roughly translated thatindicates that everyone didquite well out of it.
Growth in sales was mainly inthe instrumental folk area asa result of growing interest inIrish and Scottish music.Dealers willing to specialisecan look to JSU for help, and can inquire about theirSPEED-UP scheme.
An addition to the distributor'sfolk catalogue is the Avadalabel. Also new is theAppaloosa label, which islargely blues product.
The jazz side of the catalogue hasbeen augmented by thebargain price label JazzVault, and the 16 LPsavailable on it so far carry a£2.49 RRP.
Not-so-simple questionsfrom a trade newcomerVERY NEW to record retailing,Mr N Evans of Bryngwram,Anglesey, Gwynedd, writes inwith some apparently simplequestions which, as thoseexperienced in the trade wouldagree, are anything but simpleto answer.
His four main points are: "Howmany record companies do we haveto deal with to obtain all the chartsingles, new releases, LPs etc (inother words all record labels)?
"Is it possible to obtain all labelsthrough one record wholesaler?
"How many deliveries would weneed each week to keep up with newreleases?
"What is the minimum number ofrecords you would recommend us toorder per chart hit, for a fairly largetown with no other record store?"
It may come as a shock to MrEvans, and a surprise even toexperienced retailers, to learn that -apart from 500 and more labelslisted in the MW Yearbook, most ofwhich are licensed to, or distributedby, one of the five major manu-facturers - there are about 1,000independent labels.
These use independent wholesalersor one stops, or quite simplydistribute themselves. They vary insize from one-man or one -bandoperations which press up modestnumbers of their own discs andhawk them around their ownlocality, to larger, well -establishedoperations aiming for national
distribution and figuring in poppress indie charts.
The output from many issporadic, but overall the number ofsingles and albums released by allknown labels in any given month ishuge. If any dealer seriously wantedthem all he would need to contactevery major, and everyone else downthe line that he could find.
However, contact by telephone orthrough a sales rep with all themajors and the biggest of thewholesalers should satisfy all but themost specialist needs for stock.
The answer to the second pointcould be distilled from the first;strictly speaking it is not possible toobtain product on all labels fromany one wholesale or one -stopoutlet. But for all normal purposesthe catalogue of any one of the bigcompanies serving the whole country(Lugtons, Wynd-Up, Terry Blood,H R Taylor or Lightning, or Relaywhich specialises in TV -marketedLPs) will offer what an indie dealerin a reasonably sited town wouldwant.
For answers to the last two pointsWynd-Up's John Champion wasapproached. He recommended thatMr Evans should follow the nowvery common policy of ordering (orat least making stock enquiries) ofhis suppliers every day or every otherday.
The telephone order services andthe 24 -hour delivery routines of themajor manufacturers andwholesalers have in recent years
changed dealers' buying habits.Ordering of particular amounts ofparticular releases must, eventually,be based on local demand andbehind -the -counter experience, butnow dealers can let someone elsetake much of the initial risk.
"Dealers tend to order daily, andlive off our shelves instead of theirown stockrooms. Their stockcommitment has been reduceddramatically," says Champion."The days of ordering a box or twoat a time of a really popular single orLP are gone."
Of course, all the names andaddresses that Mr Evans wants are inthe MW Yearbook - one copy ofwhich goes free to every subscriberbut which can be obtained from theMusic & Video Week Subscriptions,30 Calderwood St., London SEI8.Tel: (01) 855 7777.
Shopfittingis Samm'slatest ventureALREADY KNOWN as a supplierof price labelling machines, wireware and display equipment, SammEquipment is now branching outinto shopfitting.
They are not specialising in thekind of browser and dumper fittingswhich specialist record shops needmost, but offer a modular shelf andgondola system. It is offering acomplete service to retailers, and canhandle major refits or individualinfill installations. Withinlimitations the company can custombuild, but all final constructions willbe based on the same metalupright/clip bracket/shelf andwiring system.

And he said that Ravro willincorporate specialist stores as wellas record dealers who have gone intovideo. He added that good tradingterms need to be sorted out now, rather than accepting lower mark-ups as the record retail trade didwith audio cassettes and eight -trackcartridges.
Plans are already afoot to hold avideo conference for retailers whileRavro will be advising its memberson the rights and wrongs of trading. Its other main aim is to introducestandard documentation betweenvideo companies and the retailers.
"We believe that we have to createthe climate for successful trading in

Japanese
imports risingBRITAIN'S VIDEO cassette playerimports went up by 90 per cent in thefirst nine months of 1980 over theprevious year according to industrysources in Japan - where all VHSand Betamax players come from.
As a result the VCR industry thereis to invest £200 million to expandoutput from last year's 4.4 millionunits to between 6.5 and sevenmillion this year. Total VCRproduction looks likely to reach amillion sets a month by the end ofthis year while the JapaneseElectronic Industries Associationhas forecast that VCR exports willsoon overtake those of televisions.
The news will please manysoftware companies, who have beennoticing a correlation betweenhardware trends and their own sales. Not only have sales increased withthe hardware market, but whenSony's Betamax system increased itsshare of the market producers foundit reflected in their software sales.

Hyperion takesauthenticity a
stage furtherTHE LATEST development inauthentic performance has comefrom one of the youngest but mostenterprising English classical labels- Ted Perry's Hyperion - and itcould have a dramatic effect onfuture recordings of similarmaterial.
The record is English Ayres andDuets performed by the Camerata ofLondon, with singers GlendaSimpson and Paul Hillier.
And for the first time on recordthe singers perform Elizabethansongs using authentic Elizabethanpronunciation - having beenadvised by the world's leadingauthority in the field.
Simpson and lutenist BarryMason, who together founded theCamerata of London in 1974, insistthat their study of Elizabethanspeech was not merely an academicdiversion.
"The words of the lute songs areas important as the music,"Simpson says. "And if you are notmaking the sounds of those days, thewhole sound of the song is notright."
The Camerata has a series ofrecordings behind it for Saga, CRDand Meridian, all of which have paidincreasing attention to matters of"authentic" detail. But the moreSimpson sang the Tudor songs ofDowland, Danyel, Campion andothers, the more she felt that therewas something lacking.
Sometimes it was simply aquestion of rhymes not working, butthere were other, more indefinablepoints on which she feltuncomfortable.
Last year she went to the leadingauthority in Elizabethanpronunciation, professor E JDobson of Oxford University, who
agreed to coach her over a period ofmonths, in the language of the courtof Queen Elizabeth I.
There were many problems toovercome. Simpson had to acceptthat there would be occasions whenthe modern audience wouldmisunderstand the sense unless thewords were printed.
It was not, however, just a
question of different dipthongs andsounding a bit like West Country. The lilts and the stresses of sentenceswere also distinctive, and as shebegan to apply them to Tudorpoetry, it seemed to make moresense of the metres used.
"Altogether it has resulted in aslightly rougher, but brighter soundand it does change the sound of thesong," she said.
For this first record (A66003).Mason and Simpson have selected anumber of well-known ayres,Dowland's In darkness let me dwell, and Fine knacks for ladies, as well asDanyel's Eyes, look no more.
It was decided to share the songsbetween Simpson, the finest English"authentic" mezzo-soprano, andbaritone Paul Hillier, a singer withmuch experience in the early musicworld. Most of the songs areaccompanied not just by BarryMason on lute, but also RosemaryThorndycraft on bass viol.
The release of the disc will nodoubt raise eyebrows in the earlymusic world. After all, Decca'sFlorilegium series has just come tothe end of its 21 -record setincorporating all the works ofDowland, all of which use modernpronunciation.
But it is widely felt that, followingthe Camerata's lead, most groupswill begin to use this pronunciationin the same way.
THE CAMERA TA OF LONDON: (left to right) Paul Hillier, RosemanThorndycraft, Barry Mason and Glenda Simpson.
Schwarzkopf returns torecording-on DeccaELISABETH SCHWARZKOPF decided to quit the recording studioin 1975 after a long and distinguished career, but in 1979 she waspersuaded back to make one last recording by Decca's Ray Minshull.
After careful consideration with her husband, Walter Legge, whohad so painstakingly guided her career, she decided on a selection ofsongs by Loewe, Grieg, Brahms and Wolf's Morike Lieder, accompanied by Geoffrey Parsons.
The result was Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: To My Friends (SXL 6943£3.19 KSXC 6943 £3.35) her first record for Decca. Produced by herhusband Legge, who died last year, she described the release as "alabour of love" and a number of critics have been surprised at thequality of singing despite her age.
It will be a record in demand from many song collectors, and as partof Decca's January release, it is now available. Decca hopes too thatboth the digital recording of Janacek's Sinfonietta and Mozart: TheSymphonies Salzburg 1775-1783 will be available by the middle ofFebruary.

ILR makeslittle headwayon revenuesLITTLE ADVANCE on 1979revenue levels was made during1980 by the ILR network withlast year's total, at £44,853,342,only 0.6 per cent higher than theprevious year. This was reachedwith a December contribution of£4,124,632. While this reflectsthe slump in ad revenue -particularly on a national basis- the ILR companies point outthat 1979 revenue was inflated bythe ITV blackout and that thefinal 1980 figure can be moreaccurately reflected as a 50.3 percent gain on 1978.

PERHAPS THE mostsignificant trend in 1980 was theintroduction and/or expansionof the independent importdistributors, with three names inparticular leading the field -Unicorn, Conifer and Parnote.
In fact, this area of operation hasgrown so rapidly that a certainamount of confusion has inevitablyarisen from the dealer's point ofview. So here we provide a briefguide to these relatively newcompanies, listing not only the labelshandled, but the nature of the labelsand some of the major new releasesdue over the next few months.
Whereas Conifer, Parnote andT.O.L. were all set up specifically asimport and domestic distributors,Unicorn was, and remains, arespected domestic label in its ownright. But last year saw thesignificant expansion of John

Allreleases are made using theSoundstream system, retail at£8.80 and are pressed by Teldec.
Unicorn also looks after threeWest Coast audiophile labels. Deloshas a smaller repertoire than Telarcwith just seven titles all retailing at£8.80 covering smaller -scalerepertoire recorded by theSoundstream system and pressed byJVC in Japan. The best-seller to datehas been the World of the Harpplayed by Susan Mcdonald.
Best sellers
Varese Sarabande similarly usesboth the Soundstream system andJVC for pressing, and its main best-seller has been the Digital Space withthe LSO under Morton Gouldplaying John Williams' Star WarsSuite and other film scores. Theimportant new release expected inMarch is a recital of virtuoso violinmusic called The Devil's Trill playedby the Czech virtuoso Hudicek. Theretail price is £7.97.
Chalfont also combinesSoundstream, JVC and a price tagof £7.97, and has done well with avariety of titles, including Spanishorchestral showpieces.
Unicorn is the main distributorfor the Japanese digital catalogueDenon (f7.50) and the direct -cutlabels Sheffield Lab and CrystalClear retailing at £10.43.
It must not be forgotten, ofcourse, that Unicorn has its ownlabel, with mid -price and full pricesections. 1981 will see about 40Unicorn releases - a backlog hasbuilt up while the company hasdeveloped the audiophile side -some of which will be fromUnicorn's own digital equipment.
It is also worth mentioning thatUnicorn looks after Finlandia with20 odd titles.
After less than a year ofoperation, Alan Goulden's Parnotehas done extraordinarily well andcontinues to expand, with some 30labels now in its portfolib.
On one side it looks after thedistribution of the Harmonia Munchoperation - HM France, Deutsche,Astree, Tudor, Acanta andCalliope - though HM has its ownoffice run by CatherineWinckelmuller. But it is alsoresponsible for a strong collection oflarge and small labels, domestic andforeign, and 1981 looks like being anactive year for many.
First, the domestic labels.Parnote now looks after OUP;
The Folio Society with its earlymusic discs featuring ChristopherHogwood, and Cameo Classics withthe Havergal Brian records.
There is also Nimbus, known forits piano, quartet and vocal releaseswith high quality direct -cut sound;and Abbey, the established UK labelspecialising in church music, organand choral music.
Original Records is a historicallabel, but the main UK historicallabel in Parnote's portfolio is Pearl, which is issuing a set of five recordsof Paderewski performances inMarch, adding one new disc to the
four already issued. The fifth recordwill be available separately. Pearlalso issues new records, featuringUK artists - in March comes anAnthology of Instrumental Musicand songs by Frank®ridge.
Parnote has an interesting rangeof foreign companies. A number ofthem specialise in historical issues:Rubini, Preiser, an Austrian labelconcentrating on vocal releases, andRCA Italy, where Parnote looksafter historical material, from filmscores (mid -price) to Toscaninirecords not otherwise available here.
Among the new additions to theParnote fold is Hungaroton whichwill be quite important in 1981 -the Bartok centenary year - and itwill be releasing a number of discs, both new records and historicalrecords. Hungaroton also launches anew mid -price series (SX) in Marchretailing at £3.25.
The three other maindevelopments on the Parnote frontare the introduction of the newFrench label Discoreale (retailing at£5.49) with two Regine Crespinrecords including Faure's Penelope, the first recording of Offenbach'sFavard and the re -introduction ofthe Vanguard catalogue in the UK(after an absence of over 12 months)including some Alfred Dellermaterial at £2.99.
Unusual stock
John Deacon's Conifer Recordshas perhaps the largest unusualimport catalogue based, of course,on the EMI lists from Australia,Austria, Denmark, France,Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy,Spain, Sweden and the US.
The breadth of repertoire in stockin the UK is very wide, but two ofthe releases which are to bepromoted are: the premiererecording of Offenbach's three -actoperetta Les Brigands, and the
100th anniversary album of musicfrom operettas, waltzes andmusical shows by Robert Stolz sungby Gedda, Frick, Tauber and others.
The other large catalogue handledby Conifer is Erato which isgradually beginning to make theimpact it deserves on the UK marketfollowing realistic handling byConifer.
Erato's extensive list contains over300 first recordings, includingHandél's II Moderato which, coupled with L'Allegro and IIPenseroso, has sold extremely wellin the performance by John EliotGardiner.
Rameau's Dardanus, withFrederica von Stade, Jose van Damand others directed by Leppard, isexpected to do equally well when it isreleased in March.
Conifer also looks after smallercompanies: the French family firmArlon, with young artistsperforming mainly obscure Frenchmusic; Jacklin, the Swiss classicallabel with many first and rarerecordings including one by Lipatti;Caprice, the Swedish label with, notably music by Stenhammer;Barclay, CBS France and folk labelsCellier, Sonodisc and Playasound.
Very important on the domesticside is the UK music catalogue ofLyrita.
The Other Labels Distribution Ltdhandles five classical labels amid itsextensive music range and is doingan increased business each month.
Bis is a Swedish label -with 160titles retailing at £4.95. It has a widerange from flute music by Doppler, piano music by Greig and theComplete Music for StringOrchestra by Grieg played by theNorwegian Chamber Orchestra.
There are the three labels from theBarenreiter group, Cantata, SDGand Musicaphon. Cantata (£3.25-£4.95) is noted for its Schutz releases(John and Matthew Passions)among its 50 releases. SDG (£3.25)concentrates mainly on organ musicranging from Bach and Handel toReger (Chorale Fantasias played byHans Klotz and Richard Voge).Musicaphon not only has a wide-ranging catalogue of Baroque musicbut also contemporary music, fromFerneyhough to Stravinsky. It is alsothe label with the much respectedUnesco folk music series.
Finally, there is Le Chant duMonde from Paris, a label with 150titles (mainly £5.25) covering a widerange of music with mainly Frenchmusicians.

RCA scores record income .
Video's One Night Stand . .
Time -Life thinks againNEW YORK: RCA has reported record income of $315 million(£131,799,150) on all-time high revenues of $8.01 billion for 1980.
Although the company does not separate records divisionperformance from its consumer electronics division, RCA Recordswas singled out for its "strong performance" in the official fourth-quarter and year-end tally.
Despite the positive year-end results cited in the report, newredundancies have taken place at the record company on both the Eastand West Coasts. Sources inside RCA also suggest that the improvedrecords performance was due primarily to streamlining the domesticoperations, and that the international sector proved disappointing forthe year.
The earnings report preceded by a few days the surprise Saturdaynight announcement of chairman and chief executive officer EdgarGriffiths' early retirement. Griffiths had been under fire from outsidedirectors for his failure to find a successor for himself, and for hishandling of several major dismissals in the corporation.
He will retain his $450,000 (£188,284) annual salary for five years, and will serve the company as adviser to the finance committee duringthat time.
Griffiths will be succeeded by Thornton Bradshaw, a nine-yearveteran of the RCA board, current president of the Atlantic RichfieldCorporation (he was ArCo executive most involved in dealing with theproblems at the ArCo-owned London Observer), and an executivenoted for unconventional yet effective long-term strategic planning -something that Wall Street analysts have long found lacking at theRCA Corporation and which is a failure of management techniquethat might well be said to have filtered down to the record company.
CBS RECORDS, CBS Video Enterprises and Bravo Cable Networkcombined forces to present a record and video tape One Night Stand:An Evening Of All -Stars, a pair of concerts featuring more than half adozen jazz keyboard artists and a variety of accompanists.
The programme was presented once in Los Angeles and once inNew York. Both were recorded for a double LP scheduled for Aprilrelease, as well as for simultaneous release to pay cable TV and as avideo cassette. A video disc release will also follow.
Initially conceived as a promotion for the jazz and fusion roster byColumbia artist development director Sandra Trim-Dacosta, theconcerts featured performances by keyboard players Herbie Hancock,George Duke, Charles Earland, Rodney Franklin, Bob James, KennyBarron, Ramsey Lewis, Sir Roland Hanna, and octogenarian EubieBlake.
By IRA MAYERThe shows concluded with six of the pianists on stage, each at his
own Steinway Grand, performing a piece composed specially for theoccasion.
The concerts also constituted one of the first such live situationsdesigned specifically with home video in mind. CBS anticipatedrecouping the high video taping costs (partially attributable to theCarnegie Hall setting) through the co-operation of Bravo, an all -culture cable network, and through foreign market resales. Thecompany expects to do another four or five similar programmes thisyear.
IN RELATED video music news, RCA divisional VP of programmeand business affairs Seth Willenson predicts that 10-15 per cent ofRCA's SelectaVision video disc catalogue will eventually consist ofvideo music. According to Willenson, RCA is currently developingapproximately 30 video music titles, higher than was previouslybelieved to be the case.
RCA now expects to have 15,000 video disc players in the market -a minimum of three for every dealer - as of the March debut, witheach account receiving 40 titles from the catalogue.
CBS Video Enterprises estimates that it will release at least a dozenrock concert titles this year in various formats, including the firstproductions via the CBS deal with Don Kirshner. Motown and CBSshows, taken from Kirshner's rock concert TV series, are slated forsummer and autumn release in the RCA SelectaVision configuration, while other concert fare will be made available on cassette.
THE RETAIL trade association which monitors VCR sales here
reports final 1980 sales of 804,663 units, up 69.3 per cent over 1979.
According to the same organisation, however, gross margins on VCRsfell to a low of 13.4 per cent.
MAGNETIC VIDEO president Andre Bley has confirmed hiscompany's intentions to release video cassettes of feature films within10 weeks to 90 days of theatre release, a concept first proposed by
parent company 20th Century Fox chief Alan Hirschfield more than a
year ago.First releases slated for such quick home video marketing are 9 To 5
and The Stunt Man. The National Association of Theatre Owners(NATO), however, is promising to fight Magnetic on this issue, claiming that such fast release violates the terms of its agreement with
20th Century regarding exclusivity.
TIME -LIFE Video, which has been active in both the retail and mailorder sectors, is apparently reconsidering its involvement in the latterarea, according to programming director Dave Bannon.
Citing over -optimistic market expectations, Bannon admits that thecompany has put its retail operation on hold, and is "studyingalternatives to retail for getting product on the market".

Magnet names Teldecas 'licensee of the year'TELDEC RECORDS ofGermany received Magnet'saward for licensee of the year1980 during the Magnet productpresentation at Midem.
In making the award, Magnetchief Michael Levy paid tributeto the efforts of Teldec throughoutlast year, which had resulted inMagnet product being in theGerman LP chart and singles chartevery week during 1980.
The presentation was a mixture ofthe label's established acts and threenew signings. Among the former,Matchbox had a particularly goodyear, with an international hitRockabilly Rebel, total sales of twomillion singles and 500,000 albums, two gold singles, two gold LPs, anda German Phono award. The band iscurrently in the studios recordingmore Steve Bloomfield songs, andthere will be a new single in Marchand another album later in thespring.
Darts are completing plans for are-emergence in the marketfollowing two changes in line-up,
MICHAEL LEVY: praised Ieldec'seffortsand in March will make their firsttour of the US and have theirMagnet product launched in Japan.Former Darts vocalist Bob Fish hasnow gone solo but is still withMagnet.
Bad Manners scored their firstTop Three hit with Special Brew, and continue gaining popularitywith the considerable help of theirinimitable lead singer, BusterBloodvessel. Singer -songwriter
Chris Rea is currently finishing hisnext self named album.
Among the new signings are theGB Band, Doll By Doll and ModernJazz. The GB Band are produced byPhil Coulter and fronted by theattractive Irish songstress Geraldine. There is a single scheduled forFebruary 13 release entitled One Is ALonely Number, written by Coulter.
Meanwhile, Doll By Doll arepreparing for their first album forMagnet and have already beenseasoned in terms of liveappearances by several Europeantours. Modern Jazz are alsorecording their first LP, and have asingle set for release early nextmonth called In My Sleep I ShootSheep.
Michael Levy concluded thepresentation by remarking that 1980had been a tough year, but Magnethad held its own in the UK and therest of the world. "There is a bigfuture in music and our industry andMagnet's commitment to it hasnever been greater," he said. "Let'smake sure that 1981 is a great yearfor us all."
Australian TV album companyplans diversification in 1981OMEGA RECORDS has been inexistence in Australia for 18 months, and, in the words of its MD TedStandfield is "basically a TVcompilation product companyspecialising in Australia artists."
But Standfield explained to MWat Midem that he is internationallyminded too. Omega has released twoacts full -price in Australia:Arabesque from Germany andHolland's Carlsberg rock band, andwill shortly issue product fromItalian sax player Fausto Papetti.
Standfield was in the Australianrecord business for seven yearsbefore setting up Omega. Thecompany's headquarters are inSydney, with branch offices inBrisbane and Melbourne, and a totalstaff of 14. It handles its owndistribution and acts as a
0. -Tips findMidem tripworthwhileIT WAS a case of have talent willtravel as far as The Q -Tips wereconcerned at Midem this year.
The band and their manager,Ged Doherty, travelled toCannes in the midst of a heavytouring schedule to face perhapsthe toughest audience in theworld - music industryexecutives, with their cynicismand seen/heard-it-all-beforeattitude.
The journey proved notablyworthwhile in the event, with awarm reception following theirmidnight gig at the CannesStudio Circus. They were wise toinsist that the French publicshould be admitted as well asMidem delegates, and wereroundly applauded by bothelements. The triumph was allthe more satisfying in view of theeffort which they and theirrecord company, Chrysalis, made in stark contrast to the restof the UK recording business.
Dateline:MIDEM
distributing agent for other labels inSouth and West Australia.
"We've sold over 500,000 unitsduring our 18 months life on TVproducts," Standfield disclosed."The most successful album so farhas been Comedy Capers, acompilation of gimmick songs byAustralian artists over the years. I
had hoped it would do well, but Iwasn't expecting the surefire winnerit turned out to be."
Standfield pointed out the risk
element in TV compilation work, with the commitment of a majorfinancial outlay and very seldom anyguaranteed prospects of completesuccess. Acquiring material for TVcompilation albums is also now avery competitive business inAustralia, and Omega is obviouslyplanning to branch out into otherareas as well. Its series of children'srecords by Australian TVpersonality Patsy Briscoe is anexample of its broadening horizonsand consistently high selling.
Standfield is optimistic about1981, with certain provisos. "Peoplemust be more selective with theirproduct, and work harder at it. Wemust create public awareness of ourrepertoire by all means possible.Things will be healthy and OK if yourun a tight ship with good product."
Bush + Bowie triumph infirst Video Clip AwardsKATE BUSH scored a double triumph in the first Musical Video Clip Awardswhich was presented at Midem. Her Babooshka video, directed by KeithMacMillan, was named best international production and Bush also waschosen as the best international performing artist.
David Bowie took the Grand Prix prize for the best video clip, Ashes toAshes, which he directed himself. The video won sustained applause when itwas screened to the presentation audience at the Cannes Studio Circus.
The Musical Video Clip Awards were the idea of Claude Brunet of Europe 1,and their purpose is to reward the best artist promotion video tapes. This year'sjury comprised audio visual industry experts and journalists specialising invideo.
Starrider aiming to sellCanadian talent abroadWAYNE BAGULEY of the Starrider Group of Companies in Canada wasattending Midem to introduce the group's roster of artists and look for "realdeals" for them in international terms.
The Toronto -based organisation has on its books Erect, Scamp, AvrilChown and Sand Harbour among others, and Baguley believes they all havegreat potential for the world market.
Formerly a musician and band manager, Baguley has been connected withthe Keach-Baguley publishing division of Starrider for two and a half years, and this was his first visit to Midem.
He is optimistic about the prospects of Canadian talent in other countries."Canada's developing and maturing with its talent and we're booking our
acts abroad now as well as right through the homeland."
©LETALTHOUGH MIDEM was generally accepted as being morebusinesslike, and therefore a little staid, this year compared toprevious years, there were still a few good jokes around - notleast the US lawyer hawking the catalogue of a certainsinger/songwriter for an amount of money which induced mirthin most of the publishers he approached ... Prices beingcharged at the Studio Circus disco when Q -Tips appeared (£7 fora Coke) also a joke ... One of the UK's giant inflatable Dollopsretired hurt after being bitten by a local canine resident ... Andin the Martinez Bar (where else?) David Durell of Broad OakVintners (who with Don Morris provided such excellent serviceon Music & Video Week's Midem flights) took his impersonationof a dog too far when he bit an onlooker in the leg ... One of thebest "galas" was the unofficial Royalty Bar jam session withBillboard's Mike Hennessey on piano (with Alan Keen depping),Billboard/Midem News man Nick Robertshaw on guitar andSpotlight Publications' MD Jack Hutton on a mean cornet .. .
Alan Keen told the best Midem shaggy dog story about "zefamous French flying ace", - but you'll have to ask him fordetails ... Midem quote by Cathie Olofsson on her eight -yearcourtship with Jan: "If you stick with a product long enough, you can break it" ... The Video boys at Midem were well -pleased, with Keefco's Keith MacMillan reporting "greatbusiness" and VCL's Steve Webber declaring: "For us it's beenmore exciting than Vidcom - we have been amazed at theinterest and we've achieved far more than we set out to".
MEANWHILE, BACK in London Ivan Chandler of JobeteMusic is looking to place material from a three -LP set byHolland -Dozier -Holland, containing 15 new songs, and invitesenquiries ... Bellaphon casualties Ron Gale and John Holmancan be contacted on 409 2336 and 439 7731 respectively ...Participants in the Music & Video Week/Bronze Squash Ladderurged to get more challenges in soon as new ladder is imminent
. Trevor Lyttleton chuffed at his song I Love A Film Cliche, from the musical A Night In Hollywood etc, being nominated fora Grammy ... Phil Symes poised to exit Chrysalis press office tojoin PR company Denis Davidson Associates ... New BBC TVseries by Grace Kennedy should help to finally establish her asone of the UK's best female singers - and she opened this weekat Talk Of The Town replacing indisposed Madeleine Bell ..With the demise of Maunkberries nightspot, The Embassy Clubobviously hopeful of taking over with regular Tuesday andWednesday evening rock and pop gigs ... With the opening ofthe circle at The Venue it is now the largest rock club in Londonand Capital is to broadcast weekly concerts from there ... Topsoul star Millie Jackson to play her first UK dates in two years inMarch ... Former NME proprietor Maurice Kinn and wifeBerenice celebrate 30th wedding anniversary on February 1 ..Any bets on how long it will be before Gary Numan makes hiscomeback concerts after his. "farewell concerts" in April? .. .
Former RCA president Ken Glancy, holidaying at his Cagne-sur-Mer home during Midem, close to announcing his own specialistmusic label.
