Commitment: The Heart of Successful Endeavors

ENLIGH SUGGESTIONS:

• Listen to Co the Rhino . Record your thoughts and impressions.

• Read through the rhino facts . After reading the animal facts and listening to the

song, how could you liken the rhino to commitment?

• Find examples of committed individuals in your core books, family history, and personal

life.

- What evidences in their lives show they were committed? How did they utilize

their time?

- What were they committed to?

- What personal sacrifices did they have to make to follow through with their

commitment?

- How did their accomplishments affect themselves and those around them,

including yourself?

HOW TO USE CO RESULTS FROM APPLYING CO

know I don’t mean it. Be bold enough

to be assertive and say, “NO.”

• Align the promises I make with my

actions, and move forward in the

power of passion and accountability.

• Commitment in its purest form drives us to

achieve, regardless of circumstances.

• True commitment maintains motivation.

• True commitment inspires others.

READ THE TALE OF HOPE: Read together the Co section in The Tale of Hope: Island of

Commitment. If you have younger students, consider retelling the story in your own words. If

you have older students, you could invite them to read the story on their own.

LISTEN TO THE SONG: Listen to Co the Rhino. Write and share your thoughts and

impressions.

EXPLORE THE RHINO:

1. Female rhinos are some of the most dedicated animal mothers. They may live with their

young for up to five years, a long time in the animal world.

2. Rhinos have two inches of thick protective skin.

3. The rhino has a good relationship with tick birds. In Swahili, the tick bird is named

“askari wa kifaru,” meaning, “the rhino’s guard.” The bird eats the ticks it finds on the

rhino and noisily warns of danger.

4. A 7700 lb. rhino can charge at an amazing speed of 30-40 miles per hour! Even at high

speeds they are able to change directions.

5. Rhinos are aggressive and protective; this is partially due to their poor eyesight. To

compensate for their limited vision, they have incredible olfactory (smell) senses; in fact,

the largest part of the rhino’s brain is dedicated to the olfactory senses. When they hear or

smell danger, they charge. Rhinos do not easily back down once they have committed to

charging.

6. The survival of rhinos is important to the ecosystem. They are herbivores and keep

grasses short; thus, providing smaller animals a path to necessary food.

7. What else can you learn about the rhino?

PONDER:

1. Help your students understand commitment by sharing personal experiences of what you

are committed to and how you show it. Then ask them: How do you see the rhino can be

likened to commitment?

2. The rhino is committed to raising and protecting their young. They will often charge at

anything they deem as a threat. Ask: What actions do you see your family take that shows

they are committed to you? What is one thing you try to do, or could do, to show you are

committed to your family?

3. Two inches of protective skin covers the rhino. What harm do you think rhinos

experience when they are charging? What obstacles and possible harm can come to

individuals when they charge toward their goals? What will protect you as you charge

toward those things you are committed to?

Co Stories

The Boy Who Kept Out Wellington

An English farmer was one day at work in his fields, when he saw a party of huntsmen

riding about his farm. He had one field that he was especially anxious that they should not ride

over, as the crop was in condition to be badly injured by the tramp of horses.

So he dispatched one of his workmen to the field, telling him to shut the gate, and then

keep watch over it, and on no account to suffer it to be opened. The boy went as he was bidden,

but was scarcely at his post before the hunters came up, peremptorily ordering the gate to be

opened.

This the boy declined to do so, stating the orders he had received, and his determination

not to disobey them. Threats and bribes were offered alike in vain. One after another came

forward as spokesman, but all with the same result. The boy remained immovable in the

determination not to open the gate.

After a while, one of the noble presence advanced, and said in commanding tones: “My

boy, do you know me? I am the Duke of Wellington1; one not accustomed to being disobeyed;

and I command you to open that gate, that I and my friends may pass through.”

The boy lifted his hat and stood uncovered before the man whom all England delighted to

honor, answered firmly, “I am sure the Duke of Wellington would not wish me to disobey

orders. I must keep this gate shut, nor suffer anyone to pass but by my master’s express

permission.”

Greatly pleased, the sturdy old warrior lifted his own hat and said, “I honor the man or

boy who can be neither bribed or frightened into doing wrong. With an army of such soldiers, I

could conquer not only the French, but the world.”

From Moral Stories for Little Folks, Salt Lake City: Juvenile Instructor Office, 1891, pp. 112–

1The Duke of Wellington is a military hero in Great Britain. In 1815, he commanded the army

that defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

Arnold Winkelried

By James Baldwin

A great army was marching into Switzerland. If it should go much farther, there would be

no driving it out again. The soldiers would burn the towns, they would rob the farmers of their

grain and sheep, they would make slaves of the people.

The men of Switzerland knew all this. They knew that they must fight for their homes and

their lives. And so they came from the mountains and valleys to try what they could do to save

their land. Some came with bows and arrows, some with scythes and pitch-forks, and some with

only sticks and clubs.

But their foes kept in line as they marched along the road. Every soldier was fully armed.

As they moved and kept close together, nothing could be seen of them but their spears and shields

and shining armor. What could the poor country people do against such foes as these?

“We must break their lines,” cried their leader; “for we cannot harm them while they keep

together.”

The bowmen shot their arrows, but they glanced off from the soldiers’ shields. Others tried

clubs and stones, but with no better luck. The lines were still unbroken. The soldiers moved

steadily onward; their shields lapped over one another; their thousand spears looked like so many

long bristles in the sunlight. What cared they for sticks and stones and huntsmen’s arrows?

“If we cannot break their ranks,” said the Swiss, “we have no chance for fight, and our

country will be lost!”

Then a poor man, whose name was Arnold Winkelried, stepped out.

“On the side of yonder mountain,” said he, “I have a happy home. There my wife and

children wait for my return. But they will not see me again, for this day I will give my life for my

country. And do you, my friends, do your duty, and Switzerland shall be free.”

With these words he ran forward. “Follow me!” he cried to his friends. “I will break the

lines, and then let every man fight as bravely as he can.”

7

He had nothing in his hands, neither club nor stone nor other weapon. But he ran straight

onward to the place where the spears were thickest.

“Make way for liberty!” he cried, as he dashed right into the lines.

A hundred spears were turned to catch him upon their points. The soldiers forgot to stay in

their places. The lines were broken. Arnold’s friends rushed bravely after him. They fought with

whatever they had in hand. They snatched spears and shields from their foes. They had no thought

of fear. They only thought of their homes and their dear native land. And they won at last.

Such a battle no one ever knew before. But Switzerland was saved, and Arnold Winkelried

did not die in vain.

Co Lesson Ideas

Discussion Questions

1. What is one fact you remember about the rhino and how does it remind you of who you

really are?

2. Have you read or seen any examples of commitment?

3. Are you committed to things that will help you stay balanced? Do you need to say “no”

to anything so you can follow through with commitments that are most important in your

life? What do think is important to commit to? Study your core books and identify things

that are important to commit to.

Song Extensions

• COLOR: Color Co the Rhino while listening to the song.

• WORD PUZZLES: Do the word search or crossword puzzle while you listen to songs

you have already learned.

• ACTIVITY: Give your students some play dough and invite them to sculpt animals they

have learned about as they listen to the songs.

• PROJECT: Invite your older students to create their own crossword puzzle, using the

information from the animal facts and words from the songs.

Additional Activities

• ATTENTION ACTIVITY TO INTRODUCE CO: What makes an animal tough or

strong? Name or draw an animal that you think is really strong. Let your class share their

drawings and why they think they are strong. Tell them that they will be learning about

Co the Rhino. He is a very strong animal; and when he charges, there is not much you

can do to stop him. He teaches us about commitment. Share an example of commitment.

• SNACK: If possible, give each member of your class a banana and ask: What part of the

rhino does this banana look like? What purpose does the skin of the banana provide?

How can having a protective skin assist you in staying committed to being who you

really are? Let your students eat the banana while you share and discuss a story about an

individual who was committed to a good cause.

10

• OBJECT LESSON - WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING TOWARD? Athletes often

demonstrate tremendous commitment on the field or court to make a shot, score a goal, or

complete a run. Football is an excellent example of athletes charging toward a goal. Find

a video of a football player breaking tackles as they “charge” forward.

1. What similarities do you see between this video and the rhino? (i.e. protective

layer, charging forward, not giving up, knowing where he was going.)

2. Do you know what you are charging toward?

3. What obstacles can pull you down before you reach your goal? What can you

do to avoid, prepare, or overcome these foreseeable obstacles?

• GUEST SPEAKER: Do you know someone who is dedicated to a good cause? Invite

him to share how he stays committed to his goals and vision. How does he overcome

obstacles including time wasters? (see the Object Lesson and Discussion – Wasting

Time.)

• ACTIVITY - RED ROVER: Play a game of Red Rover. Divide your class into two

teams, and stand on opposite sides of a field. Each team holds hands while they take turns

calling, “Red rover, red rover, send (say a name of a person on the opposite team) right

over.” The designated person charges (safely please) forward toward the linked hands on

the opposite team. If she breaks the chain, she takes a member of that team over to her

original side. If she is unable to break the link, she stays, becoming a new member of the

team.

- How would the game be different if the person running was not committed to

following through once she started running? What if she decided to go and pick a

flower along the way?

- What are you committed to doing in life? How can you increase your

commitment level?

• QUOTE: Pick a quote to discuss and memorize. Create a poster to illustrate the quote

and display it in your home.

• GOAL: Look at the “How to Use” under the Enligh section and write a goal on a goal

card to help you apply Co.

• LESSON AND DISCUSSION -WASTING TIME: Wasting time can hinder our progress

toward reaching goals and distract us from those things we are committed to. Have each

person in your class choose a task that he/she needs to accomplish (e.g. practice a musical

instrument, finish a chore or school assignment, etc.) Invite each student to look through

the Top Ten Time Wasters and How to Overcome Them listed below and identify a

possible time waster for their chosen task. Divide the class into groups and have them

11

role-play a scenario together; first demonstrating wasting time, and then demonstrating

how to overcome it while completing his/her task. Invite the class to accomplish their

chosen task at home and then share what they learned.

• DISCOVER: Below are common ways time is wasted and how to overcome them.

Choose one or a few of them and think of examples in your core books or of people you

know who are good at overcoming these time wasters. Write these examples down in

your journal and share them when you feel inspired to do so.

Top Ten Time Wasters and How to Overcome Them

1. Smart Phones and Mobile Devices

• Determine when it is appropriate to use your phone!

• Learn good phone etiquette.

• Learn to be present in each moment and situation.

• Learn to let your phone wait when involved with other priorities.

2. Shifting Priorities

• Make a list of important tasks to accomplish each day.

• Rate them in order of priority.

• Estimate the time required for each task (be realistic and include a buffer

period).

• Carry forward any items not completed.

• Use a daily planner.

3. Lack of Priorities/Objectives

• Apply the WIRA principle, Wywow, to help clarify your vision of what

needs to be accomplished.

• Set long term goals, short term goals, and then immediate goals.

• Set clear, realistic dates for accomplishing your goals.

4. Attempting Too Much

• Set a specific amount of time for your activities so you don’t spend too much

time on one task and neglect another.

• Learn to say, “No.”

• Apply the 5 D’s Principle (Decide, Do, Delegate, Defer, or Dump)

• Log tasks and activities into your daily planner.

• Give yourself a break and some rewards along the way as an encouragement.

5. Television & Other Entertainment

• Determine how much time you can allocate to entertainment.

• Engage in television and other entertainment only when it doesn’t conflict

with other priorities.

Island of Commitment Co

Page 12: ISLAND 3 Co...Searching for Bobby Fischer Paramount Pictures 1993. This movie is based on a true story about Josh Waitzkin, a gifted chess player who, with the help of his committed

12

6. Ineffective Delegation

• The concept of leverage is an important one. Work out how much your time

is worth per hour. If possible, delegate tasks that don’t give you the highest

leverage of your time.

• Make a list of tasks you should do, those you can delegate—and to whom—

and stick to your plan.

7. Cluttered Environment/Losing Things

• Set up a cleaning system (or have someone set it up for you).

• Put a check mark on the top of each document you handle. If you come

across it more than three times and it can still wait, apply the 5 D’s strictly!

8. Lack of Self-Discipline/Procrastination

• Have a chart or visual display of an important project placed where you can

see it to maintain focus.

• Get support from a loved one or close friend to help you. If you are working

on a project with other people, partner with one of them for mutual support

– it makes the job easier.

• Be creative. Make things fun to do so you want to do them.

• If it’s too big, break up the task into smaller units and reward yourself along

the way.

9. Inability to Say No

• Ask for time to consider before you agree to do anything. It’s easier to say

no after a realistic look at your schedule.

• Be honest. Explain your situation to others and ask if you can work out

alternatives.

10. Meetings

• Be clear about the reason for meeting and the desired output.

• Set a specific amount of time for meetings and make sure you honor your

time frame.

• Send the agenda and associated material beforehand so each participant can

prepare more effectively.
