ISLAMIC COMMUNITY CENTER OF PHOENIX

• The Mosque is oriented to the direction of the Qiblah, N30°E

• Minaret, Main Dome, and Mihrab are all aligned to emphasize the direction of the Qiblah

• Building is designed to provide convenience to both male and female worshippers

• Interior of the Prayer areas for both male and female are well-lit and share a common central dome flared out to four half domes, unifying both prayer areas

• Elevator with two doors is provided and accessible from both the male main and female entrance areas

• Two handicapped ramps are provided for accessibility to the main floor area and entrances

• Access to Library, Shop, and Imam's Office

• Elevator provides access for the handicapped to the female prayer area above and to the basement below

• Separate stairways are provided for access to the basement

• Major approaches (South and Southwest corner) are provided with a covered area for the purpose of:

– Extension of prayer area on special occasions

– Comfortable transition area– Shaded area for gatherings after

prayer– Area for removable stalls and kiosks

after prayer and special events toprovide a market “Suq” like atmosphere

Mosque elevations are designed to meet the following criteria:

Functional to the climate:• Windows are less, smaller or none on the South and West facing elevations• Covered area provides shade from the hot and sunny summer

Identity:• Elements are chosen to allow Mosque to express “traditional” commonly

accepted shapes and features.•.Including the Dome, half domes, Minaret and arched windows

Massing:• Northeast elevation is staggered to maximize the build able area• Overall massing creates:• Identification of various spaces• Interest and variations• Solemn yet inviting

Color:• Selected to make the Mosque look simple, warm, inviting, and interesting• A “Southwest” color palette is used to blend with the neighborhood colors

•Proposed Mosque is to be located on Lot 91 for the consideration of:–Easy access from the existing Mosque and future school–Visibility from I-17 and the Access Road–Maximum parking utilization–Easy access to the parking area from both streets–Other functional reasons

MASTER PLANNING:•Proposed ICCP is located on lots 90, 91, 93, and 94 between Orangewoodand State Streets•Lot 91 is adjacent to N. Black Canyon Highway•Existing Mosque is located on Lots 65 and 66 across Orangewood Street from the proposed new facilities

MAIN FLOOR

• Mihrab is centrally located for the Imam to lead the prayer

• Minbar is located adjacent to the Mihrab and three (3) ft. above the Prayer area for the ease of the Imam addressing the congregation and visually accessible from the prayer areas

• Male prayer area:– Allows a congregation of +/- 700

people– Three (3) entrances are provided

for the ease of access and egress, before and after, especially Juma’ah Prayer

– All entrances are provided with shoe racks and benches for the convenience of the elderly in removing and putting on shoes

– All entrances are preceded with a exterior covered area

– Male ablution (Wudu’) area, restrooms and lavatory is located at the Southeast corner of the building, for the purpose of separating the wet area from the main building

• Handicapped accessible to all areas including Wudu’

• All these areas are naturally lit and ventilated

• Wash Room (Maghsal) is located adjacent to the restroom area for functional and privacy purposes

UPPER FLOOR

• Upper floor is dedicated to the female worshippers in its entirety

• Accessible from entrance lobby on ground level via stairway and/or elevator

• Lobby of the upper floor is partially open to ground floor entrance lobby for communication

• Shoe racks are provided at the foyer leading into the prayer area

– Seating/benches for the elderly to remove and put on shoes

– Area is lit by translucent glazing from seven (7) ft. above finish floor to bottom of ceiling

• Prayer area accommodates +/- 300 worshippers– Open to the main space of male prayer

area and under common domes and roof– Partition along balcony allows female

worshippers to see Minbar, but not visible from the male prayer area

• Cry room is provided via female foyer for accommodating worshippers with infants or baby sitting purposes

• Ablution (Wudu’) area, restrooms and lavatories are separated,; but located at the SE corner of the floor.

– All these areas are provided with natural light and will be well ventilated mechanically

– Baby station/diaper change platform is provided in the lavatory area

• All areas are accessible to handicapped including Ablution area

• Fire exits are provided for the female prayer area

BASEMENT FLOOR

• Multipurpose area has been enlarged to accommodate future activities

• Accessible from entrance lobby on ground level via stairway and/or elevator for the female; and from an exterior stairway and elevator for the male

• Basement area includes:– General/multi-purpose room which is

almost as large as the male prayer area with a folding partition to separate the male/female areas when necessary

– Large storage room provided at the North end to store tables, chairs, and accessories. Accessible from both male and female sections

• Basement area includes (continued):• Kitchen with separate serving windows provided

to the male/female areas has access from either side

• Separate restrooms are provided for male & female

• Janitor, washer/dryer room is provided in the male foyer

• General storage for the facility is provided at the entry of the exterior stairway

• Elevator machine room

North East Interior View-Qiblah

NORTH-EAST VIEW:•All worshippers (both male and female) facing this direction as oneenters from the main entrances will see the generous feel of the spaceand the sense of common direction in prayer

•Windows at each side of the Mihrab provide North East light into thespace

•All lower sections of the wall are to be finished with either a wood panel wainscot, to protect the finishes or book cases for the Holy Qur’an

•Details of finishes and interior design is still in progress•East and West Male entries are shown in relationship to the Prayer Hall

GENERAL:•The interior of the Mosque is designed with the concept of providing:

•Openness•Naturally well-lit interior in the day time and carefully located lightingfixtures providing comfortable lighting in the evenings

•Main entrances to the male and female Prayer Halls are directed toward Qiblah direction facing the Mihrab and Minbar

•Dome is set to the center of this space to provide a sense of unityand dignity

South-East Interior View

SOUTH-EAST VIEW:•This view, perpendicular to Qiblah direction, shows the view as oneenters from the Northwest male entrance

•It is designed to allow the female Prayer Hall to have visual access tothe main floor and to the Imam

•Curved Mihrab relationship is illustrated•One of the half domes attached to the main dome is over the female prayer area, allowing the gradual appreciation of the dome feature, which is shared by both male and female prayer areas. It also relieves the female section from having a monotonous flat ceiling throughout

•Basement is shown with its relationship to the multi-purpose area

GENERAL:•The interior of the Mosque is designed with the concept of providing:

•Openness•Naturally well-lit interior in the day time and carefully located lighting fixtures providing comfortable lighting in the evenings

•Main entrances to the male and female Prayer Halls are directed toward Qiblah direction facing the Mihrab and Minbar
