This Indian Standard (Part A02) which is identical with ISO 105-AO2 :1993 ‘Textiles — Tests for colourfastness — Part A02: Grey scale for assessing change in colour’ issued by the International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of theChemical Methods of Test Sectional Committee and approval of the Textile Division Council.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attentionis particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they shouldbe read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
With the publication of this standard, 1S768:1982 ‘Methods for evaluating change in colour (tirstrevision)’
stands withdrawn,
The composition of Technical Committee responsible for the preparation of this standard is given inNational Annex A.
In reporting the results of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final valueobserved or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2:1960 ‘Rules forrounding off numerical values (revised)’.

TEXTILES — TESTS FOR COLOUR FASTNESSPART A02 GREY SCALE FOR ASSESSING CHANGE IN COLOUR
1 Scope
This part of ISO 105 describes the grey scale for de-termining changes in colour of textiles in COIOW fast-ness tests, and ‘its use. A precise calorimetricspecification of the scale is given as a permanentrecord against which newly prepared working stan-dards and standards that may have changed can becompared.
2 Principle
2.1 The essential, or 5-step, scale consists of fivepairs of non-glossy grey colour chips (or swatches ofgrey cloth), which illustrate the perceived colour dif-ferences corresponding to fastness ratings 5, 4, 3, 2and 1. This essential scale may be augmented by theprovision of similar chips or swatches illustrating theperceived colour differences corresponding to thehalf-step fastness ratings 4-5, 3-4, 2-3 and 1-2, suchscales being termed %tep scales. The first memberof each pair is neutral grey in colour and the secondmember of the pair illustrating fastness rating 5 isidentical with the first member. The second membersof the remaining pairs are increasingly lighter in colourso that each pair illustrates increasing contrasts orperceived colour differences which are definedcalorimetrically. The full calorimetric specification isgiven below.
2.2 The chips or swatches shall be neutral grey incolour and shall be measured with a spectro-photometer with the specular component included.The calorimetric data shall be calculated usingClE 1964 supplementary standard calorimetric sys-tem (10° observer data) for illuminant D~~.
2.3 The Y tristimulus value of the first member ofeach pair shall be 12 + 1.
2.4 The second member of each pair shall be suchthat the colour difference between it and the adjacentfirst member is as follows:

2.5 Use of the scale. Place a piece of the originaltextile and the tested specimen of it side by side inthe same plane and oriented in the same direction.Place the grey scale nearby in the same plane. Thesurrounding field should be neutral grey colour ap-proximately midway between that illustrating grade 1and that illustrating grade 2 of the grey scale for as-sessing change in colour (this is approximatelyMunsell N5). If necessary to avoid effects of thebacking on the appearance of the textiles, use two ormore layers of the original textile under both originaland tested specimens. Illuminate the surfaces withnorth sky light in the Northern hemisphere, south skylight in the Southern hemisphere, or an equivalentsource with an illumination of 600 lx or more. Thelight should be incident upon the surfaces at approxi-mately 45°, and the direction of viewing approximatelyperpendicular to the plane of the surfaces. Comparethe visual difference between original and tested ma-terial with the differences represented by the greyscale.

If the 5-step scale is used, the fastness rating of thespecimen is that number of the grey scale which hasa perceived colour difference equal in magnitude tothe perceived colour difference between the originaland the treated specimens; if the latter is judged tobe nearer the imagina~ contrast lying midway be-tween two adjacent pairs than it is to either, thetested specimen is given an intermediate assess-ment, for example 4-5 or 2-3. A rating of 5 is givenonly when there is no perceived difference betweenthe tested specimen and the original material.
If the 9-step scale is used, the fastness rating of thespecimen is that number of the grey scale which hasa perceived colour difference nearest in magnitude tothe perceived colour difference between the originalpiece and the tested specimen. A rating of 5 is givenonly when there is no perceived difference betweenthe tested specimen and the original material.
When a number of assessments have been made, itis very useful to compare all the pairs of original andtested specimens which have been given the samenumerical rating. This gives a good indication of theconsistency of the assessments, since any errors be-come prominent. Pairs which do not appear to havethe same degree of contrast as the remainder of theirgroups should be re-checked against the grey scaleand, if necessary, the rating should be changed.
3 Describing colour changes in fastnesstests
3,1 In using the grey scale, as outlined in 2.5, thecharacter of the change in colour, whether in hue,depth, brightness or any combination of these, is notrated: the overall difference or contrast, betweenoriginal and tested specimens, is the basis for theassessment.
3.2 If, as in rating dyes on textiles for example, it isdesired to record the character of the change in colourof the textile in the test, appropriate qualitative termsmay be added to the numerical rating, as illustratedby the examples shown in table 1.

3.3 When changes’ in colgur occur in two or threedirections, it is considered ~ neither feasible nornecessary to indicate the relative magnitude of eachchange.
3.4 When the s~ace available for recording quali-tative terms is restricted, as on pattern cards,-the ab-breviations shown in table 2 may be used.
