This issue of Isha L'Isha is dedicated to Spirituality. But what does it mean to be spiritual? According to Webster's Dictionary, to be spiritual is “to be of the spirit or the soul; to be sacred; or consisting of spirit.” That being said, how do we increase spiritu- ality in our own lives so that it will be reflected in our sister- hoods? Often I have heard women say that spiritual growth is too much to tackle, espe- cially in our sisterhoods. But is it?? In Deuteronomy 30: 11-14, as Moses is instruct- ing the Israelites, we read: “Surely, this instruction which I enjoin upon you this day is not too baffling for you, nor is it beyond reach. It is not in the heavens, that you should say, ' Who among us can go up to the heavens and get it for us and impart it to us, that we may observe it?' Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say,' Who among us can cross to the other side of the sea and get it for us and impart it to us, that we may observe it?' No, the thing is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to observe it.” Each of us has it in our power to increase our own spirituality and, in turn, that of our sisterhoods. We can begin by opening and closing each sisterhood meeting or ac- tivity with a prayer. Better yet, have someone do a short D'Var Torah. Many sister- hoods are using The Torah: A Women's Commentary and the new study guides to de- velop Torah Study Groups. The study guides are available to sisterhood presidents on the WRJ website, www.womenofreformjudaism.org . Some sisterhoods hold women's seders; some have begun Rosh Chodesh Groups; and some hold Sisterhood Shabbat Services annually. Each of our sisterhoods should be offering activities that awaken our spirituality and our Jewishness. It is my hope that each sisterhood in the Central District will begin one new activ- ity that will help everyone in their sisterhoods further their sense of identity with their womanhood, their Jewishness, and their G-d. An Area Day Filled with Spirituality By Marilyn Goldfein

The Northern Ohio and East Areas of Central District had a wonderful Area Day on July 31. There were many memorable moments, but the best part for most of us was the participation we had from our women in our Shabbat service: Joyce Braun, Temple Emanu El, Elaine Fray-man, Temple Tifereth, Marilyn Goldfein, Temple Emanu El, Bernice Goldman, Anshe Che-sed Fairmount Temple, Clarice Goldstein, Temple Emanu El, Eleanor Kushnick, Temple Emanu El, Ona Lowe, Temple Emanu El, Trina Miller, Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, Susan Saltzman, Temple Emanu El, Ethel Schultz, Temple Emanu

El, Lisa Singer, Temple Beth Sholom, Susie Strom. Temple Tifereth Israel and Helen Weisler, Temple Emanu El. The parsha that was read that morning was similar to the V'a-havta. There were portions that most of us recognized and it was heart-warming to have Bernice Goldman, Immediate Past Presi-dent at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple lead that prayer. Clarice Goldstein and Marilyn Goldfein, Area Directors thank Rabbi Steven Denker and Cantor Laurel Barr for organizing this service for Area Day service and we thank the women who partici-

pated in the service. Since there were five sister-hoods participating in this Area Day, it brought us all together. Many of the participants are ei-ther chairing or volunteering at the Central District Convention and we look forward to seeing all of you in the Cleveland area for services in two different temples and a dinner in another temple.

Temple Kol Ami West Bloomfield, Michigan Temple Kol Ami Sisterhood Shabbat, March 14, 2008 was an experience that was spiritual and heartfelt to the deepest core of sisterhood. Our theme was “With All Your Heart” (B’chol l’vavcha). We began our Shabbat with dinner that was well attended by sister-hood members, guests and families of our two very special TKA sisterhood members who were honored that evening. The family of Shirley Rosenberg, our beloved past president was there in large numbers, traveling from Texas, Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota and from Detroit, to honor the memory of their mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Shirley passed away in September ‘07, and in her honor sisterhood was presenting the first annual “With All Your Heart” award. Shirley always believed that everything you do should be done with all your heart and soul. She out herself into every endeavor without holding back ~ and she expected you to do the same. She was short if stature but towered over all of us in spirit and heart.

Our Shabbat service was a beautiful tribute to women and their roles in Jewish life. Miriam’s song is a part of our service, as is a poignant poem by Merle Feld entitled

“We all Stood Together.” Shirley loved reading that poem and now whoever reads it usually by the end of it. Shirley didn’t cry when she read it, but it will always be Shirley’s poem. This year we added a prayer from WRJ’s Covenant of the Heart thanking God for the blessing of sharing Shabbat with our sisterhood. At the conclusion of our service, Debbie Lecours, VP of Sisterhood & volunteer librarian, presented the temple with the Torah, A Women’s Commentary for the temple library. We also honored Debbie Lecours with the Shirley Rosenberg award. Debbie’s

heart is open, strong and loving. She truly exemplifies the meaning of “With all your heart” in everything she does for sisterhood, temple and her family. The award, decided by sisterhood past presidents, was a unanimous choice, and Debbie’s heartfelt gratitude was shared with all of us that evening. Following the service and Oneg, we viewed an inspirational and spiritual video, “Sister Rose’s Passion,” the story of Sister Rose Therling, the Dominican nun who softened the heart if the Catholic Church toward the Jews. Sister Rose’s work was brought to the attention of the Pope and the Church hierarchy, the rampant and vicious nature of Catholic anti-Semitism. Her efforts over many years, resulted in the passage of the Pope’s encyclical, instructing Catholics to no longer teach the false story that the Jews killed Christ. Our Sisterhood Shabbat was overflowing with emotion, spirituality and love. This was an amazing experience. Shirley’s spirit was with us that evening and we could feel her beaming!

Temple Sisterhood of IHC Indianapolis, Indiana

With this program we had hoped to bring back Sisterhood mem-bers and bring in new ones. We definitely did that! This was an informal get together at a member’s home. One of our members is a Marriage and Family Therapist and she created a discussion with questions guiding us to revisit our childhood dreams and plans. Have we done what we had hoped we would accomplish and where would we go from here? Thirty women from age 30 through late 60’s had a lively discussion that could have gone on for hours. It turned into a type of group therapy with 100% lively participation!

WRJ and District Leaders Set Sail Aboard the USS MemberShip

On Wednesday, May 12, 2010, WRJ and District Leaders set sail on the U.S.S. Member-Ship. We docked at Port Kutz in Warwick, New York around 5:00pm. The cruise was di-rected by Admiral Lynn Magid Lazar, Captain Shelly Lindauer, First Mate Blair Marks, and Commanders Sharon Benoff and Rachel Jurisz. Filling out the crew were the Lieutenants or District Presidents and the Midshipmen or District First Vice Presidents. After stowing our gear, the crew reported for dinner and orientation for our cruise. On Thursday, following breakfast, some of the work-shops included Ship to Shore Communications (Using Technology) and Floating Alliances (Working with the new URJ Districts). After lunch, we visited several Ports of Call. Among

them were our Common District Calendars, Convention Agendas, Connection Calls and District Calls, District Reports and Training New Crew members. And what do you do for Late Night Entertainment? There were games, prizes, and, of course, there was an ice cream bar! On our last day aboard ship, we discussed transitions and future changes for WRJ. We then loaded up our gear and headed out for Manhattan and the Annual WRJ Board Meeting. I think I can honestly say that our cruise on the U. S. S. MemberShip was fun and each crew member came away with new ideas to bring back to our districts.

SHOW OFF YOUR SISTERHOOD!!! District Convention Fall 2012

Do you want to have fun?!

Do you want all of Central District to know what a great Sisterhood you are?! You can show off YOUR SISTERHOOD and YOUR CITY by entering a bid to

host the 2012 CENTRAL DISTRICT CONVENTION!!

The Presidents of all of our Sisterhoods have received a letter of explanation and an application form to bid for the honor of hosting the 2012 Central District Convention. All applications will be considered, and the decision as to the selection of the Host Sisterhood will be made at the meeting of the Executive Committee that takes place just prior to our 2010 District Convention on Thursday evening, November 11, 2010. The decision will be based on information submitted by each Sisterhood. The criteria includes: location, feasi-bility of transportation, hotel accommodations, the Sisterhood’s reason for desiring to hold the convention, their enthusiasm, and their ability to assume the responsibility for all local arrangements. If your Sisterhood is selected, you will have the opportunity to select a weekend in the Fall of 2012. You will work closely with the District 1st Vice President and the Convention Facilitator. You will have notebooks from past District conventions to provide guidance. You can include Sisterhoods nearby to work with you bringing Reform Jewish women to-gether sharing goals and skills. The winning application for the honor of hosting the 2012 WRJ Central District Con-vention will be announced at the Closing Plenary of the Central District 2010 Convention in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday morning, November 14, 2010. If your Sisterhood is selected, you will have the opportunity at that time to invite all of Central District to visit you city with a flyer, fun souvenir, or skit. Applications must be submitted as directed in the letters by October 1st to the Time

and Place Chair. If you have any questions, please contact Bette Jo:

Opening from the Sisterhood Donor Havdalah and Installation Service at Congregation Shaarey Zedek 2009 East Lansing, Michigan What is Havdalah? For many of us it is our favorite service, a time when we feel the most spiri-tually connected to God. But the word Havdalah literally means to separate, to differentiate, to distinguish. Havdalah is the separation between one week to the next, the closing of Shabbat and the ending of a week to the start of something new. As we look at its true meaning we can also compare the origins of Havdalah to us, as Jewish women, and how each one of us is different and distinguishable, but how together we are strong. Just as the joy from the wine, the sweetness from the spice and the fire of the flame combine together to ignite our senses in an immeasurable experience at the closing of Shabbat, each one of us brings a small, yet importantly strong piece to sisterhood. Each of us has our strong suits, not all of us are good at everything we may attempt, but to-gether we can collaborate our efforts in order to create the best possible outcome. Look around this room, each one of us has something unique to contribute to our organization. This is sister-hood, and we truly are lucky to be a part of it. For it is through this wonderful, different, distinguished and dynamic group of women that we, together, have begun our journey to become who we want to be. It has allowed us to nurture our talents for good, and to encourage us to speak our minds. For myself, I am a fourth generation of

proof that we truly are stronger together. So as we embark on a new era of sisterhood, continuing our faithful traditions of L’dor v’dor we should turn to each other and say, “Thank You Sisters.” Thank you for all you have done for me, for each other, for our congregation and for our community. Sisterhood is what separates us from the norm, just as Havdalah separates tonight from the past week. It’s what makes us unique.

The annual WRJ Board of Directors Meeting was May 15-17, 2010 in New York City. Before the meeting convened, Shabbat Services were held for the first time at our 3rd Avenue offices. President Lynn Magid Lazar introduced Marla J. Bobowick, the consultant who conducted a Leadership Training of the best practices in the field of nonprofit gov-

ernance so the board can ap-ply these ideas to WRJ. Amy Asin, the Strategic Planning Consultant who was hired to help us plan for the future, spoke about delivering value to sisterhoods and finding ways to increase membership. Ex-ecutive Director Shelley Lin-dauer let us know that there has been a 15% loss in mem-bership in the past five years, and less than 8% of the women in URJ-affiliated congregations belong to sisterhoods. There are reduced contributions to the YES Fund and YES Fund sales are declining. We are addressing these challenges. Lindauer stressed the recent accomplishments of supporting the 100 sisterhoods using the Lilith program, introducing Social Action Rings and Israel Twinning, forming sixteen sis-terhoods in Israel, and having Sisterhoods from Israel, North America and South Africa par-ticipate in twinning. The new

balanced budget was discussed and approved. Planning for the 48th Assembly in the Washington, D.C. area began with brain-storming sessions. WRJ’s Cen-tennial Celebration Chair, Rosanne Selfon, reported that the committee will create a cal-endar of centennial events, pro-grams and publications running from January 2013 to December 2013. The American Jewish Ar-chives will help plan and carryout many events. In paying tribute to Betty Benjamin who passed away in February, Nancy Apfel said, “Her blessing will serve as an inspira-tion to all of us.” Benjamin was a past president of NFTY, founder of Circle of Service and National Director of Planned Giving for UHC. The four department Vice Presidents reported on past ac-complishments and future goals. Motions discussed and passed include:

WRJ Sisterhoods participate in a planned URC/RAC sponsored “Drug Policy Webinar.” In support of the enhanced relationship between the South African Union of Temple Sisterhood and WRJ that there be a 15 rand ($2.00 US) per member annual dues to WRJ. Monica Solomon, attending from South Africa, paid dues for the thirty members of her

sisterhood. The board approved the amended statement on Volun-tary Extension of Foster Care. The ability to build on one level of Lifeline to achieve the next should be re-instated with conditions that current donors in the process be “grand mothered in,” and when the next level is achieved, the lower level pin be turned in. The Centennial Pin is excluded from building. The WRJ Art Calendar be renamed, “WRJ Art Calendar and Reference Guide.”

Guest speaker, Rabbi Eric Yoffie talked about the conversion bill being proposed in Israel. He said these are difficult times for syna-gogues, and how important the work we do is, “and that if we do it right, we will succeed.” Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of Religious Action Center, mentioned that with only 24% of sitting judges be-ing women, Elena Kagan’s nomina-tion to the Supreme Court is cause for optimism. Royalyn Vert, Hilda Glazer, Bette Jo Stempel, Nancy Apfel, Sandy Adland and Andy Ludwig from Central District were among the ninety-three women at the board meeting. We all came away from the productive meeting with a sense of cooperation and joy and renewed spirit for building toward the vital future of WRJ, Stronger Together.

  • To honor the memory of a beautiful, kind and loving young woman, I am ask-ing that we take our leftover yarn and make hats in all sizes, colors and fabrics. Scarves too! Annie loved to knit and loved the variety of fabrics that we knit with. After she died, a group of sisterhood women came together and made hats and scarves out of Annie’s wool just as we had made hats for her during her illness. It was important to Annie to help others and we can be part of her legacy by making hats for those touched by cancer. Annie is part of my life and I am asking you to honor her memory with me. We will collect the hats at convention and take them to the Gathering Place: A caring community for those touched by cancer. “The mission of The Gathering Place is to support, educate and empower individuals and families touched by cancer through programs and services provided free of charge.” Annie and her family sup-port and comfort there. If you are unable to come to convention, please still take part in this project and send your hats with someone who is coming or send them to me at: Hilda R. Glazer 2180 Bryden Road Bexley, OH 43209 Need a pattern? They can be found on the following websites: www.headhuggers.org www.chemocaps.com Thank you for your support,
